I cant believe that we are coming to the end of our fourth week of this term. Time is flying by with the first exams starting two weeks Monday. There is a lovely atmosphere (if a bit tense) in lessons with students busy revising. Today sees the end of the practical exams for Art students and orals for the linguists. It is lovely to share some good news: at the Isle of Wight final of the Young Enterprise competition held at Quay Arts on Wednesday 27th April, our company team, Wight Gift Co, won Company of the Year along with the 6th May 2016 Issue 58 Special points of interest: Young Enterprise Success A right royal day out with DofE IAG News best Company Report Award. Company of the Year qualified them for the next round at the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Final on Wednesday 4th May in Southampton. They then went on to be the Company of the Year winner, as well as securing Best Company Report again. I am so proud of what they have achieved so far and I am looking forward to the next phase: the Regional Final on 14th June at Reading University. Student voice will be interviewing potential candidates to replace the team over the next two weeks. They have also managed to invite Iain McKie from UKIP and Vix Lowthion representing the Green Party in next Tuesday, to give both opinions on whether it is better to stay in or leave the EU. This will hopefully enable our students who are 18, to make an informed decision when voting. Year 13 will now have made their minds up on which University they have selected as their firm choice and which one as their insurance. Now they need to concentrate on doing all they can to get the grades that they require. Make sure you are all looking after yourselves, eating and sleeping well and are able to be well prepared for your exams. Have a lovely weekend - we are promised some lovely weather!

Wednesday 27th April was the final of the 2016 Young Enterprise Programme at the Quay Arts.

The following VI Form students took part and represented our school with their company,

Island Innovators:

Leah Edwards

Daniel Lewis-Shaw

Alicia French

Beki Yardley

Phoebe Harverson

Edward Webb

Mark Evans

Frederica Lloyd

I am pleased to say that they did incredibly well. Out of 5 awards our team won the following:

Company Report Award – 1st Prize.

Dragons Den Event – Joint winners

Trade stand Award – 2nd Prize

This was success enough.

However we then learned that our team had also won the main prize of the evening:

The Isle of Wight Company of the Year Award.

The team went on to represent the Isle of Wight in the County finals of the competition which was held in Southampton on Wednesday 4th May.

I am incredibly proud of these students, who have shown a diverse range of skills and hard work in the last few months. They thoroughly deserve their success.

Please congratulate them when you see them.

Geographers at Ventnor Haven

Following their success on the Island, our amazingly talented VI Form Young Enterprise team

attended the County finals in Southampton. The team came up against 7 other schools, who had also won in their areas.

I am again incredibly proud to tell you that our team won the following awards:

Best Company Report

And……..

Company of the Year 2016

Hampshire and the

Isle of Wight

This really is an incredible achievement for a group of students who have exams coming up in the next few weeks.

They will now go on to represent Hampshire in June at the regional finals to be held at Reading University.

In order to raise awareness of their amazing product, and also to continue with their success we will be holding a pop-up shop event. More details to follow.

I hope you will all support our incredible team.

We were invited to send a team from Carisbrooke, Medina and VI Form to participate in the DofE Diamond Anniversary celebration in the presence of a Royal VIP at Ryde Arena on the 29th April.

The Earl of Wessex was visiting the Island to see the new hovercraft and meet students who were involved or about to enrol on to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. We were lucky enough to get 4 brilliant skaters to volunteer to showcase their talents for the morning and compete in a kind of knockout relay on ice.

They had to race around some artificial penguins complete a slalom and then negotiate a low obstacle which meant sliding on your belly over the ice. Not a pleasant experience when you have spent all your time learning to be upright on skates!

Our team made it through to the final and finished a credible 3rd place. Immediately afterwards Serena had to rush off and then participate in the Wight Jewells synchronised skating team. They gave an amazing performance and the whole team were introduced to Prince Edward at the finale.

Mr Bridle

The DofE – shaping your future

The team were:

James Wright , Emily Godsell, Jamie Southwell, Serena Copping congratulations to all of them.

Prince Edward, watching Jamie about to dive under the penguin obstacle with the rest of the team looking on.
