By LANGDON JANOS

Dear wise Coyote,

I’ve been in a split class for 2 years now, and each year I’ve been with the same students that are now in fifth grade. I’ve really gotten to know them, and now some of them are my best friends! I’m really going to miss them when they graduate. I want to stay friends with them, but I’m worried that it will be too hard because we’ll be going to different schools. Please help me.

– fearful, friendly fourth grader

Dear fearful, friendly fourth grader,

I understand your worries. I have some friends in fifth grade too. If you really want to stay friends with them you have to stay in touch. You can call, email, text, or FaceTime. You should also get together and hang out sometimes. But just to warn you, your friend will make a bunch of new friends in middle school. Don’t be alarmed. It happens. If you follow my advice, you and your fifth grade friend will be besties forever.

– wise Coyote

Interview with Mr. EarlBy SOFIA DAILINGER and SKYE TORRES

what do you like most about teaching 5th Grade?I like teaching Language Arts and Social Studies and I love going to Yosemite.I enjoy seeing how much my students grow both academically and mentally as individuals.

what do you like about Graduation Day?It is wonderful to see my students graduate because I am so proud of them and all that they have accomplished.

How does it feel to leave your 5th Graders? It is bitter sweet. Especially because my students graduate and leave Wonderland. I don’t get to see them next year like the lower grade teachers. I am sad to see them leave but excited to meet my new class each year.

How long have you taught at wonderland?I have taught at Wonderland for 15 years. I taught 1st Grade in Room 9 my first year. I then taught 3rd Grade Language Arts in Room 16 for 10 years. This is the end of my 4th year teaching 5th Grade, which is my favorite.

what advice do you have for our graduating class going into Middle School?Life can be tough, so you have got to be tougher. It’s okay to struggle, but never to quit. Always keep your eyes open and notice the small things in life. Remember Robert Frost’s advice to take the road less traveled by. And, don’t forget to come back and visit.

thank you to wonderland’s 2013-14 Green team for all their efforts on behalf of the school and our planet:

Sebastian Bartlett, Zoe Busenberg, Tessa Crockett, Mia Frank, Kieran Gregori, Eden Gruskoff, Langdon Janos, Kevin Kim, Mirelle Lindquist, Maya Melnick, Joshua Nathan, Sura Sohi, Cori Wilson

Here are some green tips to keep in mind over the summer:

• Even on very hot days you can often cool your house just by opening windows and/or screen doors which can create a nice breeze. If you use an air conditioner, make sure your doors and windows are closed and turn it off when you leave the house.

• If going on a picnic, try to bring washable, reusable cloth napkins and tablecloths, instead of paper ones that just get thrown away.

• If camping, hiking, or even going on a picnic, make sure to stick with the bug repellents and sunscreens made with the fewest amount of chemicals.

• Hang up your bathing suits and towels to dry and use again rather than washing them after each use.

• Tell your parents to do any watering early in the morning or late at night when temperatures are at the lowest.

• If you don’t already do this, help your parents start recycling and/or composting at your house.

Have a great summer and stay green!

Yosemite FallsBy NICKY KOUCHNEROV

I wash downmy wide streams,

splashing the rocksthat shimmer and gleam.

I fall off the topand gain speed as I get nearerto the crashing waters below

and where the rocks of granite become clearer.

Half of me continues downstream, while the other half turns to mist,

and then into rain some other placeby the sun’s fiery fist.

The Yosemite ExperienceBy ETHAN LACHMAN

I closed my eyes and saw the complex patterns glowing in my mind. I opened them and found myself staring at the giant rock, El Capitan. I interpreted that I was seeing peculiar shapes and tried to piece them together like a face, a teardrop, and a bowl. Every rock in Yosemite had its own touch. I picked each soft blade of grass from the ground, studied it, and let it back to the ground. I see an insect right around me, I get scared and squash it. I am once again in Yosemite, in the grass. Life is thriving all around me. I know insects are on me, I don’t stop them. It is not as frightening as before. I am peaceful in nature.Yosemite seems to take the worry out of me and put it in storage I never knew I had. It takes good thoughts and brings them out.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog DaysBy DOMENIC SMITH

This is a movie that made me laugh out loud. If there was a rating for funniest movie I would give it five stars. But there are a few rough edges. In one part you an see the Microphone and boom rig in the corner of the shot. The characters were great. An honest mama’s boy, a teenage punk rocker, a perfect rich blond girl, and a middle schooler who is going through the awkward stages. His plan for the summer is to stay one step ahead of his parents, just to play video games while also keeping away from his bully brother Roderick. Also trying to hang with his best friend Rawly and with his crush Holly Hills. The reason I chose this story is because it shows what it is like to be a middle schooler which many of us Wonderland students will be next year.

Facts and History about Ballroom DanceBy DANIELLE GOREN

Dance is broadly conceived as physical movement organized into patterns in time and space. Writings on dance grounded in European intellectual tradition have tended to distinguish dance from other systems of organized movement (such as sport, military drills, synchronized labor, festival processions, and sometimes ritual) by identifying a dimension of conscious craft or artistry. The discipline of anthropology has shown that this distinction is not universal by investigating how organized human movement functions in different cultures, as well as how it relates to music, theater, pantomime, storytelling, and other kinds of performative behavior.

In the whole dancing production you need to know all of the dances. There are two types of dances, Latin and Standard. In the Latin dances the types of dances are the Cha ChaCha, the Samba, the Rumba, the Paso Doble, and the Jive. In Standard the dances are the Waltz, the Tango, the Fox Trot, the Lidi Hop, the Quickstep, the last but not least the Viennese Waltz. These are all types of dances and the practical versions of dance.

Here are four facts about Ballroom Dance:1. In earlier times, ballroom dancing was considered the social dances of the

privileged and wealthy.

2. During the Victorian era, the Waltz was met with opposition because the close hold was considered improper.

3. Even though Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers’ performances were highly choreographed, many people associate Ballroom Dancing with the duo. Their onscreen dancing in the 1930s influenced all types of dance.

4. Ballroom Dancing is good for cardiovascular health, it builds muscle tone and is great for your joints and spinal column. It also builds confidence and can help reduce stress.
