May • June Theme: Diversity

A few years back I used to make frequent trips to Detroit to The Church of Today. Marianne Williamson, who is well known as an author and A Course in Miracles lecturer, was the minister there at the time. I always enjoyed listening to Marianne share her wisdom and beliefs.

Being a student of A Course in Miracles, it was al-ways a great way to learn and deepen my studies.

One Sunday, Marianne talked about making the commitment to new ways of thinking and let-ting go of past thought processes. She likened it to walking over a bridge. On one side is what we know and our ability to grow comfortable in our discomfort. The other side is enveloped by a fog and we have no idea what it hides. She assured us there are others on the far side of the bridge who have made the walk themselves; they are there to welcome us and help us find our way to new ways of thinking and living. All it takes is to trust and the desire to change.

That talk has stayed with me as I have trudged over several bridges in the days since the morning of that particular lecture. Walking a bridge and not knowing what is on the other side can be an intimidating thing. But if we look back and see that what we are walking away from has lost value in our minds and our hearts, it makes sense to let go of that which no longer serves and step toward the unknown.

May we all cross the bridges of our lives to greater fulfillment and joy.

“There is no difficulty that enough love will not conquer;

no disease that enough love will not heal;

no door that enough love will not open;

no gulf that enough love will not bridge;

no wall that enough love will not throw down;

no sin that enough love will not redeem...

It makes no difference how deeply seated may be the trouble;

how hopeless the outlook; how muddled the tangle; how great the mistake.

A sufficient realization of love will dissolve it all.

If only you could love enough you would be the happiest and most powerful being in the world” ~ Emmet Fox

“Education & Prevention.” Those two words sum it up when it comes to wellness, according to Michelle Martin, Ed.S and founder/director of Insight Learning & Wellness Center in Warrensville Heights.

A school psychologist for 26 years, Michelle followed her passion for helping children by opening Insight Michelle Martin

Center 12 years ago. She developed her private holistic psychology practice that included Tae Kwon Do Fun Fu-sion, the therapeutic martial arts program for children and adults.

Through the years Michelle maintained a strategic vision for growing the center based on her clients’ interest in wellness without pills. Insight Center is now home to a carefully-selected team of credentialed Associates whose high integrity work focuses on achieving and maintaining optimal health through the holistic treatment of ADHD, anxiety, depression, addictions, pain, and other afflic-tions. Insight Learning & Wellness Center hosts classes for mindfulness/meditation; life coaching, reiki, EFT, yoga, parenting, cooking & nutrition. Private appointments are available for ADHD management, educational/psychologi-cal testing, acupuncture, spiritual counseling, & addiction recovery, as well as reiki, reflexology, and yoga.

“Why seek holistic care and prevention in your quest for wellness?” To Michelle, the answer is clear. “In our society we are encouraged to spend billions of dollars on pills and other drugs that often cause many side effects. It is critical for our long-term health and happiness that we use time-proven natural practices and treatments that are effective in preventing pain, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and other diagnoses.” To learn more, contact Michelle at 216-765-4470 or visit the Insight Center’s website www.insight-wellness.com.

• Bridge designs depend on their intended function, financial resources and also the type of terrain where they are con-structed. While an arch bridge might be suited in one situa-tion, a suspension bridge might be suited in another.• The Zhaozhou Bridge is the oldest standing bridge in China and the world’s oldest stone segmental arch bridge. Built in 605 AD, it is still standing strong today, over 1400 years later.• The Inca civilization in South America made use of rope bridges in the Andes Mountains before the Europeans colo-nized in the 1500’s. These rope bridges spanned canyons and gorges, allowing easy access to otherwise difficult to reach areas. While they were strong and reliable, repairing the bridges was a dangerous job that often ended in death.• During the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century wrought iron was introduced into the design of large bridges. Wrought iron was later replaced by steel because it has a higher ten-sile strength.• The first welded road bridge was designed by Polish engi-neer Stefan Bryla in 1927.• The Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia can rise or fall up to 18 cm (7.1 inches) depending on the temperature due to the steel expanding or contracting. It also features 6 million rivets and weighs 39006 tons.• The Brooklyn Bridge in New York, USA joins Manhattan and Brooklyn over the East River. When completed in 1883, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world (remaining so until 1903). It features average daily traffic of around 145000 vehicles.• The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, USA is a well known suspension bridge that was completed in 1937. It has a total length of 8981 feet (2737 metres) and features 80000 miles (129000 kilometres) of wire in its two main cables.• The longest suspension bridge in the world (as of 2010) is the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Kobe, Japan. It opened in 1998 and spans an incredible 1991 metres (6529 feet).

“Life is a bridge over the sea of changes. Do not build a house on it.” ~ Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Burning bridges is a phrase that advises to have an optimistic approach to life by forgetting the past worries, guilt, errors and mistakes committed by the self and others. It is common that we cross the bridge only when it comes and try not to think about it, unless we come across a bridge. But once we cross it, we must make sure that we don’t lament of the past and focus only on the future or the present. But burning the bridge also has another perspective. One anony-mous quote says, “Careful not to burn bridges, you might just need to cross back”. We should also have a clear demarcation in deciding which bridge to burn and which one to build. If this is clear, then there won’t be any guilt, or worries in life. ~ Unknown

“Meditation is nothing but a bridge between you and light. Then darkness is just a river, it goes flowing underneath the bridge; you can move to the world of light. And the es-sential core of meditation is very simple: it is to be a wit-ness of your mind process, not to be identified with the mind processes -- thoughts, desires, imaginations, projec-tions, dreams, memories and so on and so forth -- not to be identified with anything that passes in the mind but to re-main aloof, watching, seeing it, knowing, tacitly knowing ‘I am separate, I am not it. I am just a mirror reflecting it all but I don’t become the reflection.”

ridges to new levels of insight and awareness come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes they appear as a gentle nudge or a clear inner message, and at other times they come crashing into our lives as a severe and radical wake-up call.

BRIDGES TO CHANGE

By Julie Hoyle

BI was gifted with three nudges and a message before finally receiving a

radical wake up call in January 2003. At the time my husband, Tony, and I were living in the Ukraine. Four months earlier, we had eagerly headed to Kiev to take teaching positions in an international school after having been living at an ashram in India.

Within an hour of arriving at work we were quiet-ly informed that the Ukrainian Director was such a tyrant that every member of the department had quit in frustration more than a year before we got there. While we were anticipating adventure in a city that had ballet, opera, great

architecture and history to offer, we were not expecting a working environ-ment choked by a tight, controlling, iron hand. Within an hour of arriving at work we were quietly informed that the Ukrainian Director was such a tyrant that every member of the department Tony had been hired to manage had quit in frustration more than a year before we got there.

Brutal temperatures also challenged us as winter began taking hold. Inside the under-heated school we shivered so much, I took to wearing my coat, hat and gloves. Outside, at -18f, ice and snow blanketed the entire city, inviting me to reminisce how 20 years of living in the Bahamas and then India had

graced me with the good fortune of never having had to pull on thermal underwear.

The first nudge arrived softly. Four difficult months after being at the school, in contrast to the freezing temperatures outside, I had deco-rated my classroom with huge palm trees. I initially assumed it was as a means of bringing some warmth and cheer to the environment. On another level, I pondered, “Does this impulse contain a message of some kind?”

With perfect synchronicity a day or two later, I began dreaming about the Bahamas. The dreams were always the same. I would wake to lucidity and find myself flying above the turquoise, crystalline waters of the islands as if they were calling me to them.

Early one Sunday morning, I shared the experiences with Tony, saying, “I think this means some-thing…” Later that day, we swathed ourselves in as many layers as pos-sible and headed downtown. Enter-ing the open plaza, I looked up and let out a gasp. A huge screen at least 20 feet across was vibrantly featuring a promotional video of the Bahamas. The footage had viewers flying over the islands, swimming with dolphins and finally breaking surface to delight in the architecture and amenities of the Atlantis Hotel on Paradise Island.

It was a stunning sight. In six to eight inches of snow, I was witnessing the warmth and beauty of my dreams made manifest, larger than life and in

full public view. For a few seconds, I felt light-headed, disoriented and more than a little weird, yet there was an accompanying feeling of exhilaration.

A few days later, for three consecutive mornings, I woke just before the alarm, hearing an inner voice stating, “When a person gives his or her life to a place, a country and its people, it must come looking to pay them back in return.” Stated with power and conviction, I absolutely knew that change was in the air, but was not clear how to act.

To get to work, our morning commute consisted of a nose-to-nose jam-packed ride on the subway, followed by a more pleasant stroll through a park. Winding down a path through a promenade of trees, we would finally cross a railway track and venture down two small slopes before climbing steps to an elevated neighborhood.

On the morning my more radical bridge appeared, the cold was particularly bone numbing – so cold we could barely draw a breath. After making our way across the railway track, Tony and I stared at one another in silent dismay, noting that layers of snow had densely com-pacted on the lower slope, producing a black, glossy, frozen surface. With a steep bank of spiky trees on each side there was no way around it.

Navigating the path was the only option. Tony made his way first as I followed, placing one tentative foot in front of the other. Despite having iron cleats on the bot-tom of my boots, I slid across the ice, somersaulted and landed back-to-front on all fours.

Straddling the slippery surface and rigid with shock, I knew I was in trouble. Severe pain was thumping out of my right wrist and up into the arm, accompanied by an odd sound slicing the air, cutting through sticky trees and echoing in the far distance. After a few seconds, I realized I was hearing my own howling.

The dreams were always the same. I would wake to lucidity and find myself flying above the turquoise, crystalline waters of the islands as if they were calling me to them.

Everything began happening in slow motion with the shock of the event lifting my awareness to a level where I was viewing everything from outside my physical body. With this elevated and expanded perspective I became aware of a number of things simultaneously. First, I intui-tively knew I had broken my wrist in two places. Second, I was filled with the certainty that:

“This is happening because I am cut off from my spiritual and creative essence.”

Third, staring down at the ice I heard an inner voice saying,

“This work situation can not continue. It has to change!”

I knew it was over. Although Tony and I had gone to

the Ukraine with the intention of staying for two years, I realized it was finished. These insights were confirmed three days later. While recuperating, with my hand, wrist and arm locked in plaster, Tony arrived home announcing that the Ukrainian Director was becoming jittery. Political change was in the air, which meant hav-ing to pay taxes she had, to date, been avoiding. As a consequence, she was cutting out her more expensive foreign staff.

Hearing this, Tony and I began a new job search and within days had secured work opportunities on Grand Bahama Island.

Though disappointed not to be able to continue ex-ploring the richly diverse aspects of the country, Tony and I appreciated our time spent in the Ukraine. I also made a promise to myself that I would pay closer atten-tion to the gentler bridges leading to new insights – rather than waiting for the radical, bone-breaking kind.

As we apprehensively peer over the edge of the precipice, perilously looking down at the rapids slicing into the floodwaters, we might find ourselves fearful, hoping against all odds that we don’t lose our footing. We pray that we won’t fall into the abyss of the turbulence below.

As the pressure surges, the waves begin lapping up against us and steadily rise higher and higher, grabbing at us, threatening to engulf us. If we can’t escape their clutches, the waves will surely carry us away in the fierce fury, dragging us into the deep darkness of the frigid un-dercurrent.

It would be nice if we could avoid such turmoil – and the suf-fering and fear generated by it. But sorrow, sadness, disease and loss are all part of life as we know it in the material world. None of us is immune. The challenge is to find the way to navigate through these

Nineteen people lost their lives in those few minutes, including a young family of four whose car had been swept away like a flimsy particle of dust into the roaring, wild wall of water.

I was perched on the peak of a stone bridge that arched over the creek, a passive witness to this awesome expression of Mother Nature’s unleashed power. I watched as large trees were easily uprooted, tossed downstream like matchsticks. I was intrigued at how we tend to underestimate the power of such natural forces.

The raging river engulfed everything in its wake. Nineteen people lost their lives in those few minutes, including a young family of four whose car had been swept away like a flimsy particle of dust into the roaring, wild wall of water.

Many times since, I have found myself reflecting on that frightening and deadly rampage. I have often contemplated the important metaphor it of-fered.

A bridge over troubled waters: This is what is offered to us. We consider ourselves fortunate as we lollygag along savoring life, accru-

ing pleasurable experiences here and there. There is no question that smooth sailing can be a marvelous experience. Its enjoyment should be appreciated

seemingly difficult experiences. The question becomes how to bridge the divide over such troubled waters.

How does one learn from these apparent negative ex-periences? And are they really negative experiences?

When faced with adversity, it is how we respond to the difficulty that determines who we are. Our life ex-periences will become calamitous only if we make the conscious decision to make tragedies out of them. We might just as easily choose to view them as opportunities for personal growth.

As the pressure surges, the waves begin lapping up against us and steadily rise higher and higher, grabbing at us, threatening to engulf us.

The search for discovering the way across the deep canyons of our journey with all of its inherent difficulties and dangers can become the driving force of change. The more daunting the challenge and the greater the apparent obstacle, the more potential there is for en-lightenment.

Rather than lamenting the troubled waters we en-counter, we can choose to be grateful for them, as these obstacles in life can be the source of strength that em-powers us to rise above the very adversity that appears

to obstruct our way. We can embrace these tumultuous times and challenges, accepting them as gifts from the Divine. By being grateful for the raging river that blocks our way, we can use the experience to bridge the gap from turmoil, disappointment and suffering to a place of understanding, wisdom and insight.

Bridges: To Cross Them or Burn Them?

W hen I was around the age of six my family moved to a 50-acre farm in a little rural town called Huntsburg, in Geauga County, Ohio. As a child, I had numerous reoccur-ring dreams in which I was traveling by car crossing a bridge over water. The car went

off the bridge and I drowned. This was a past life dream and for most of my life I was terrified of crossing bridges over water.

There weren’t many choices as to which roads you took to get into town. There was one particu-lar route that my mother used to travel when she went into Middle-field that crossed over the East Branch Reservoir. I used to beg her to take another route. When you’re the mom and your 6-year-old tells you to take another route the 6-year-old never wins.

I would close my eyes, clench my fists and hold my breath until we reached the other side.

This wasn’t the only bridge over water I had to cross as a young child. There were a few out in the sticks that were frightening – such as the dilapidated covered wooden bridges.

This wasn’t the only bridge over water I had to cross as a young child. There were a few out in the sticks that were frighten-ing – such as the dilapidated covered wooden bridges. But the trip across wasn’t nearly as long, therefore shortening the anxiety.

On a family vacation to Florida when I was a few weeks shy of 18, we crossed a mammoth bridge from Georgia to Florida (over water). I had never been so petri-fied in my life; it seemed to go on forever.

It’s been 56 years since my earliest memories of being

afraid of bridges, and I’ve overcome the worry enough to maintain a life of normalcy.

But in my dreaming world, for more than a few de-cades, I would continue to have reoccurring dreams about crossing bridges. In one, the draw bridge would open up right as my car was going to cross; in another the bridge

would seem to go straight up and my car would feel like it was going to slide backwards. Over time, thank God, my bridge nightmares have ceased to pop up like dandelions in my sleep – re-placed with shad-ows of a different color.

Bridges are a metaphor for cross ing over, bridging the gap, making a connec-tion, and moving from one state of consciousness to

another. They signify change – leaving what’s behind and moving toward what’s ahead. We could go on forever about the significance of bridges. What they mean to each of you is individual to self, just like in the dream world, you are the final interpreter.

As for the ex-pression “don’t burn your bridges” there are mixed reviews on this. In the restaurant industry, where I

spent more than 30 years, it is common knowledge that one never burns one’s bridges. The restaurant industry is transient and, inevitably, you will run into that employer or co-worker again someday.

Plus, I’ve always felt it shows good ethics and profes-sionalism not to burn your bridges.

This phrase of burning the bridges comes from an old military strategy that is also connected to the “burning of

the boats.” In 1519, Conquistador Hernando Cortes came to Mexico and conquered the Aztec Empire. Cor-tes was so committed to winning, that he convinced his soldiers to destroy their own ships so they could not retreat, fall back or escape. It was a case of suc-ceed or die. This strategy created total commitment and real motivation for his soldiers; it worked.

In the restaurant industry, where I spent more than 30 years, it is common knowledge that one never burns one’s bridges. The restaurant industry is transient and, inevitably, you will run into that employer or co-worker again someday.

There are mixed emotions whether certain bridges in our lives should be burned or just left in the dust, like a faded memory.

Whether it was Cortes or another military leader, Napoleon Hill wrote about this in his well-known book, Think and Grow Rich:

“A long while ago, a great warrior faced a situation which made it necessary for him to make a decision which insured his success on the battlefield. He was about to send his armies against a powerful foe, whose men outnumbered his own. He loaded his soldiers into boats, sailed to the enemy’s country, unloaded soldiers and equipment, then gave the order to burn the ships that had carried them. Addressing his men before the first battle, he said, “You see the boats go-ing up in smoke. That means we cannot leave these shores alive unless we win! We now have no choice – we win – or we perish!”

There are mixed emotions whether certain bridges in our lives should be burned or just left in the dust like a faded memory. Obviously, in extreme situations of abuse and other forms of harmful human behavior there seems to be a necessity to burn bridges for survival. I’ll let you be the judge of that.

It all comes down to recognizing that we are cross-ing bridges, metaphorically, every day of our lives in the decisions we make.

“Should I stay or go?” is the proverbial question asked today in a plethora of career situations. Some people are taking jobs just for the sake of having a job in today’s economy; we’ve all been there. In retrospect, again, there is no right or wrong answer; it’s all part of the journey.

If the job is just a bridge, transporting you to the next step on your path, then it has served its purpose well. If

you have learned a lesson, whether the experience was one of total bliss or horrific terror, again its purpose was fulfilled.

Throughout history bridges have been sung about, written about, joked about (“If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you”), and no doubt been a major con-tributor to the evolution of what this planet is trying to tell us, which is that we are all connected. We don’t need a bridge to connect; we just need love, like in the lyrics of The Judd’s hit single, “Love can build a bridge, between your heart and mine.”

I am building a bridge right now. With my words from this piece of paper, you and I have just con-nected. You have been given free will to make the choice, “Do I build a wall, or build a bridge?”

the same experiences that leave you feeling unsettled andstressed?

Faith is taking one step at a time – believing what wecan’t always see. We have no idea where life will lead us,but let’s spend the time we do have becoming who we trulywant to be.

As much as we need to put effort into ourselves, I don’tthink works alone can turn someone into the best personwe might envision for ourselves. We need something else tolean on, to fully trust in to help guide us along the way.Having a strong spiritual connection has been the true icingon the cake.

Staying connected to God has taken my life to a wholenew level of peace and balance. We cannot rely just on ourown willpower and works to change, so I encourage every-one to lean on the transforming love of God to supply whatwe don’t always get through the day.

Believe in your ability to change. You and God are theonly ones who know how to take care of you. Let us all livea life full of purpose and passion and most of all peace. Ibelieve that if each of us developed into the person Godgifted us to be, the world would be a different place to live.

A BRIDGE INTO THE UNKNOWN

What the caterpillar callsthe end of the world, the Master calls the butterfly.

By Deb Bradt

Mthem to crack open I was thinking about how important it is to let life take its course. I so wanted the butterflies to come as soon as we got there and waited with camera in hand to capture the moment.

This reminded me a little bit of my recent journey…one that has forever changed the course of my life. It began a few years ago, after the birth of my little boy, Henry. Although millions of women give birth every day, as soon as I had the C-section, something went awry deep inside me. I felt completely off center, as if I were a snow globe someone shook up with flakes flying in every direction.

For three years, the flakes kept floating. I could not find solid ground and felt as if I may never come back to my “old self” again.

I tried doctors and healers of all kinds, as well as a

variety of treatments, but I always ended up feeling shaken up, deeply depressed and intensely hopeless.

Anxiety crippled me to the point that I could not function in daily life. My yoga practice, which was normally a source of great joy, ceased to exist.Anxiety crippled me to the point that I could not func-

tion in daily life. My yoga practice, which was normally a source of great joy, ceased to exist. It has been a little over a year since I climbed out of that deep well of turmoil. Through an amazing support system, unwavering faith and the courage to take another step, I navigated my way back to center. I see this period of my life not only as an awakening and a sort of spiritual initiation but also as the beginning of the discovery of my True Self.

When I finally found my way back to the mat, after a transformational yoga therapy session with Swami At-

marupa Saraswati, I began to slowly put the pieces of my physical and emotional health back together. Through dedication to a daily practice of postures, meditation and yoga nidra, swimming, walks in nature, a solid support system and unwavering faith, I traversed the hump of the most challenging bridge of my life thus far.

what will happen along the way, and then often land in a sweet place of unconditional love and deep inner peace. The task of the yogi is to remain present, keenly aware and honest about one’s potential and one’s limitations. It is this daily process on the mat and in life that keeps my system balanced and grounded and allows for a life filled with boundless joy and unlimited potential.

In yoga, there is a word satya. It is translated as “truth-fulness” and has been and continues to be my anchor in all aspects of life. What I realized was that, for me, the real bridge is not necessarily even from one point to another or

even from an obstacle into a clearing but from the small self into that of the True Self – the Self that surpasses all understanding.

The Course in Miracles states, “When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you.” For the True Self, there is nothing lacking and nothing that cannot be overcome.

I find now that every moment of my life is a mini-miracle and that this recent experience was simply, as my dad used to say, “A bump in the road.” I am now armed with a sense of empowerment, profound gratitude and a strong belief that the human spirit is truly, as Marianne Williamson wrote in her book A Return to Love, “powerful beyond measure.”

Ultimately, every solitary second of life is an opportu-nity to transcend and then transform, just as the chrysalis releases its butterfly at just the right moment. One experi-

ence takes us gently into the next…even those we wish would have been different.

Not knowing who I was and how I was going to make it to the other side actually created the perfect platform for a pivotal reawakening. I will continue to enjoy watching the

metamorphosis of butterflies, rising to the pinnacle of a bridge and gliding down the other side.

Daily I am reminded how fragile life is and how all is ex-actly as it is meant to be. When I look back to that summer’s day, I remember the most important part of the butterfly’s lesson. It was when Henry effortlessly caught the monarch in his hand. She remained there for a while, slowly open-ing and closing her wings in a soft rhythm, waiting for just the right moment to ascend. To us, it seemed like it took forever, but then, without hesitation, she launched herself into the open blue sky.

The beauty of life resides in this dance of moving from one stage into the next, like the bridge of the caterpillar transitioning into the cocoon and, finally, the butterfly. With each obstacle, each little bump, the power of the human spirit strengthens.

As I look back on those challenging years, I clearly see how each situation was actually an opportunity for growth.

The journey of life cannot be planned. It can only be experienced, appreciated and savored. As I reach the end of this bridge and anticipate the next, now, for the first time, I know I am ready to travel the road that lies ahead.

Einstein and theSpeed of Light

March • april 2012

=mc2. Matter cannot be creat-ed nor destroyed. There is no new energy in the Universe. E

Everything is either in existence or be-ing transformed into something new.

Einstein’s formula calculates what physical matter would be equivalent to, if it were all suddenly converted

dentally, is about a billion feet per second – pretty fast). If you take the speed of light and multiply it by itself, you will have the higher energy you need to transform your life and all its physical manifestations.

What exactly are the practices that can bring a complete, instantaneous change? What practices access healing energy that can move at the speed of light? I say this: You tell me… because you know.

Your prayer cast into the Universe can attract the perfect thing to help you move into light. It might be a Unity service, a chiropractic session, a healing herb or involvement in a soup kitchen… you know. It will come, and you will know this is the thing that can carry you at the speed of light to a new attitude and a new existence.

Something or someone will come into your life to help you loosen your grip on the old conclusions, judg-ments and patterns you knew so well and have held for so long…and it will move at the speed of light.

Higher energies are your bridge. Do you trust the Universe to carry you at the speed of light?

A lyric from my new CD, Loops N Grooves, says:Between what you want and you is a sacred trust.

Yo u k n o w, y o u c a n ’ t h o l d i t t o o t i g h t l y. You might suffocate the essence of your heart. Hold with (your) light and lightly hold that which you wish to create.

Sometimes things can’t move at the speed of light because you are holding them too tightly. Or they are too

The Energetic Bridge between where you are and where you want to be is all about higher energy.

into energy. According to his formula, matter would be changed into energy by multiplying its mass by the square of the speed of light.

Does anyone else notice that the key part of this equation is light? M is Mass – physical density. E is Energy – the propelling force of nature. C is the speed of light. If you multiply the mass (your body, life, solid matter) by the square of the speed of light you release its inherent energy. If you want to transmute something, you should multiply it by the speed of light.

So the bridge between where you are and where you want to be is all about light.

It really doesn’t matter what side you are looking at – matter (the way things are, the current condition) or energy (the potential). Matter can be turned into energy and energy can be turned into matter.

Matter is the physical representation of the mass – your weight, the physical make-up of your bones, tis-sues, the condition of the world around you. Energy is the force that propels you through the Universe – the power for personal change, physical workouts, injuries, new experiences and paradigms. Either one can be your doorway to new ways of being.

You cannot go from being the Old You with previous paradigms, belief systems and daily habits to being the New You all in one day. You need a bridge to get there; small steps taken in the same direction; a homeostasis of love that can hold you on the path even when your current results are not encouraging.

How can you create that energetic bridge? Find prac-tices that access light and higher energy. Multiply your relationships by the speed of light squared (which, inci-

deeply embedded in your system, buried under many layers of emotions, and therefore difficult to access. Your neuroses, fears, unfinished business and emotional wounds have to be brought into existence through con-versations, interactions and experiences so they can be seen, felt and then recreated.

The bridge is the path of light that leads you to new awareness. I think it is the hardest work in anyone’s life.

The teachings are so easy to say. People expound on them, write books and give lectures. It doesn’t make it any easier to do. When your inner, deepest emotional weaknesses are being pulled forward from you, to be worked on and healed, it can be the most painful experi-ence of your life. It might manifest as physical injury, to bring your attention to the matter. Or it might manifest as a conversation with a family member.

Particles change to waves, waves change to particles, the atoms dance, they move. As your attitude changes, your experiences change, opportunities open up. Be free.Whatever it is, your job is to encourage it to come

forward so you can multiply the light by itself and trans-mute it. It will heal.

It isn’t that we don’t know this stuff. It’s just that it’s too painful to practice. Or it feels like there’s no end to the spiritual work.

Do you ever get to a place where you feel, “I’ve done the spiritual work, now I should be getting respect, or material wealth, or status?” As if a lifetime of spiritual work warranted some reward? As if one person is more privileged than another who might be doing less spiritual practice or personal work? Arrogance is another way of holding tightly. If you loosen your grip, hold with love and allow the light to work through you, you will transmute the matter again and again. You will learn this lesson many times in one lifetime.

The answer is not in changing what you are doing (matter), or how you are doing it (energy). The answer lies in changing your deepest belief, and with awareness, going into its innate nature to release its rigidity.

Things that get used in the same way over a long period of time get rigid. Dense matter moves slowly. Light moves quickly. Light moves through space. Un-like radio waves and cell phone radiation, light does not travel through solid matter, except for windows and other transparent objects.

Create more space in your body through proper alignment and healing work; create more space in your mind through experimentation, new attitudes, cleaning house, clearing your heart. Things that move at the speed of light are not always in a predictable form.

Particles change to waves, waves change to particles, the atoms dance, they move. As your attitude changes,

your experiences change, opportunities open up. Be free.

We need you to work at the speed of light. To work in light and with light. We need you to be flexible. To try. To love. To reach into the unknown. To be a bridge for others who can’t make that jump.

This is the deep work of the spirit. It is the blessing of being on a spiritual path at this point in time and history. I pray for you … that you continue finding and feeding prac-tices of light and love – yoga, chanting, meditation, healing, health seminars, food, farming, community, family.

May you apply light to all aspects of your life. Espe-cially the parts of your life that irritate you, the situations that don’t hold infinite vibration, the friendships and family relations that don’t practice clean and loving communica-tion. Take all the dense parts of your life and add light. Not to help them, but to clean up your vibration and free you of the burden of carrying that belief.

We want you to jump to the new. It’s an intention-based Universe. Change can be instantaneous or in real time. Whatever the timeline, make it a practice to unveil old judgments and karmas and sing to them, pray to them, heal them. And then call me up and tell me mat-ter really does convert to energy, because you will have so much energy you will easily heal yourself and those around you with some to spare.

Soul FoodSoul Food is dedicated to all my readers as an offer-

ing to share my metaphysical musings and the lessons that I have encountered throughout my journey here in this classroom we call Planet Earth. I encourage your questions and quandaries as we grow together toward solution and enlightenment.

Dear Eva: I am a veterinarian who has dedicated my life to

compassion, healing and medical advancement for ani-mals. Often, I become exhausted trying to “bend over backwards” for my patients’ owners to accommodate their needs. The veterinary business is one of customer service and emotional exhaustion. Despite my very best efforts, there are times I cannot please every single pet owner. My staff and I often have to deal with rudeness and personal attacks from angry clients. Although 9 out 10 times, these outbursts are for reasons beyond our control, I cannot stop blaming myself for not keeping everyone 100 percent happy. I often look inward and find fault in these situations, whether or not it is there. Do you have any advice for washing away the day’s toxic comments and emotions from an angry client so I can come home and be present for my children and family? Venting Vet in Cleveland

Dear Venting Vet: I commend you for your profession; any profession

dealing with the public, which provides a service, is a challenging one to say the least. Having been in the restaurant industry for 30-plus years I understand only too well.

One thing that it helps to remember is that you are No. 1, even before the animals. Your health and your san-ity are crucial to your being able to care for your clients with the utmost professionalism and compassion you can muster. The only way one achieves this is to nurture thyself. When flying on an airplane, notice what the flight attendant says as she is going through the motions of the safety drill. She states, “Put the oxygen mask on yourself first, your children second.” There is a reason for this, just like anything in life: If you can’t breathe you are no good at helping others, be it your child or an animal. So please take heed to the airlines’ advice.

Next, what works for me is to remember the title of Teri-Cole Whitaker’s book, What You Think of Me is None of My Business! Yes, I realize easier said then done, but if you could just make that your mantra, getting through your day with rude, thoughtless, angry clients will become a lot easier.

Something else that works when a crazed person is shouting obscenities at you is to simply smile and say, “Thank you for sharing.” That usually shuts them up.

Mentally bless the people you are having problems with…You don’t have to let anyone know you’re doing this; just bless them in your morning meditation and wish for them all the things you would wish for yourself.

I also tell my clients to mentally bless the people they are having problems with. I know that this sounds crazy, but I can’t tell you how many people have come back to tell me, “You’re never going to believe this but...” That one little trick in itself is a lifesaver. You don’t have to let anyone know you’re doing this; just bless them in your morning meditation and wish for them all the things that you would wish for yourself.

Last but certainly not least, surround yourself with a shield of white light each morning before you walk into work. Just uttering the words “white light” has saved people’s lives. I use this simple ritual myself quite a bit.

You may want to check out your local gem store and get yourself a “snowflake obsidian” pendant. They’re great at protecting you from negative energies. Then when all is said and done at the end of your day, run a bath with warm water and sea salts, lay in the tub with your heart chakra covered, light a candle, sip a glass of Cabernet and sink into the abyss of serenity.

Dear Eva:I consider myself a positive person and I say affirma-

tions and read positive books but I just don’t feel my life is going the way I want it to. What thoughts do you have on The Secret and the whole “positive” movement?Wanting More in Manchester, PA

Dear Wanting:The mind thinks no less than 60,000 thoughts a day.

That’s quite a bit of thinking going on in the hollows of March • april 2012

our brains. You may think you think positive thoughts, but in reality how many of those 60,000 thoughts are actually positive?

We don’t say as many positive things throughout our days as we think we do. When I was teaching the Louise Hay groups in Cleveland, I had my students listen to their self-talk for a week. They were amazed at all the negative things that not only came out of their mouths but also the mouths of people around them.

You may wake up in the morning and say, “I am pros-perous.” But when it comes time to pay for your gas at the pump, or tip a server, you may complain about the prices or the service. If you complain about the government, or anything else that comes across through the media, that’s still putting your energy in a negative space.

We need to be extremely watchful of not only our words but our thoughts as well. The Universe is like a giant computer, and you are the computer programmer; what goes in comes out. If you really want to know how positive you are just take a look at your life and the evidence is as clear as the nose on your face.

As for The Secret, it seems to be related to our first question. My take is that there are some good principles in The Secret, but I feel that people may take away from it that

We don’t say as many positive things throughout our days as we think we do.

you merely have to wish and your magic genie will appear. Here’s a point that I don’t believe is clearly addressed in The Secret: First, we need to rid the garden of the weeds that have been growing for quite some time, then till, plant and fertilize. Action seems to be the missing ingredient for most. It’s not a mystery that the only thing that separates the two percent of millionaires in the world from the other 98 percent is action. Take a look at what you’re saying, and then look at what you’re doing. Namaste.

InnerViewsBy Kimmie Rose Zapf

March • april 2012

Aries March — Yes, you’re busy, but don’t forget to breathe.

Remember that your time is lucrative. Make the best of it. Don’t keep secrets. And take the edge off that honesty. Being tactful doesn’t rob your comments of their value.

April — Happiness can only come when you behave in an honorable manner with yourself. There’s no shame in setting boundaries, but that isn’t enough. You have to actually operate within those boundaries in order to reap the emotional benefits of living honorably.

TaurusMarch — Your family ties will be strengthened as

you become better at communicating with each other. In the beginning, this communication may be difficult, but don’t give up. Take small steps and watch the improve-ment begin.

April — Worrying isn’t good for your mental or physi-cal health. Stop. Don’t wait for outside forces to solve problems or make you happy. Make yourself happy by finding constructive ways to balance your life with posi-tive thoughts and actions.

GeminiMarch — Relationship issues speed ahead when you

find yourself in complete awe of a new person. But don’t move so quickly that you fail to enjoy each moment. New bliss is euphoric. Always enjoy the journey and the good emotions that come with it.

April — Financial problems can be overwhelming, but not for you. Spend wisely to prevent adding new problems. Don’t become discouraged. Give things time to settle and remember that a new start is often very refreshing and calming.

CancerMarch — Spring may be off to a hectic start, so make

time for yourself. Explore a relaxing hobby. In your re-lationships, allow yourself to forgive. Truly forgiving can be courageous and powerful. You’ll feel better and all of your relationships will improve greatly.

April — Embracing new beginnings in your own life will help you resist the urge to be judgmental of others. Release judgment. Making time for yourself during this period will allow you to attract abundance.

LeoMarch — Have fun when possible, but be aware

of your mischievous nature. Also, be cautious of bad spending choices. Traveling is great, but remember, when you’re far away from home, you tend to do things you wouldn’t do otherwise. Make careful choices in all of your actions.

April — You’re experiencing anger and resentment with relationships. These emotions are OK — in very small quantities. Don’t let yourself become obsessed with them. The pain they cause will only hold you back. Let things go so you can move forward.

Virgo March — New relationships arise. You’ll be able to

have fun and not worry about how things will turn out. Your positive emotions will produce a wonderful, freeing sensation. Enjoy this time.

April — A new love in your life will bring a great depth in intimacy. Open your heart and mind to this new romance and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Pay attention and you’ll learn a few things about yourself.

LibraMarch — Communicating clearly will help you avoid

misunderstandings in relationships. Being careful in your speech will prevent down-the-road regret. Speak with clarity and empathy.

April — Yes, you’re related to them, but be careful. Family members have feelings, too. Be kind and empa-thetic and your relationships may improve, not worsen. And there’s no harm in doing a few family favors but set limits. Remember, you don’t have to get angry to turn down a request.

Scorpio March — Feeling tired may make you want to detach

from the world, remember that you’re not alone. If you pull away too abruptly, those around you may misunderstand and think you’re detaching from them. Just explain that you need time to yourself.

April — Yes, it’s true. Letting go is hard, but dealing with your emotions constructively while allowing yourself to grow is even harder. Give change a try and be under-standing of others on the same journey.

SagittariusMarch — This is a good time to think about investing,

but advance carefully. Keep in mind that money can be very difficult. Protect yourself by doing ample homework before investing your time and your hard earned money in any new endeavor.

April — When your ego gets fired up inside you calm it down! Yes, you’re known for your ego, but if you set it aside you’ll find good things manifest more easily for you.

CapricornMarch — Watching your words will help you avoid

relationship issues. This is a good time to travel, be sure to be nice to the new people you encounter. They may turn up in unexpected places later.

April — Now is the time for forward movement. You’ll find good options with finances and investments, so keep your eyes open to all opportunities. As always, invest your time and energy wisely.

Aquarius March — This is a favorable time for you, but you’ll

have to keep your eyes open to unexpected things to see all the good opportunities coming your way. Look for edu-cational opportunities and workplace advancement.

April — New love is in the air just like the change of seasons. Keep that warm, energizing feeling by com-municating clearly and openly with family members. Yes, it’s OK to love them, too.

Pisces March — The past is in the past. Allow yourself to

move forward by learning to appreciate the lessons you’ve learned and expressing happiness instead of regret. With your new, improved, attitude things really will get better.

April — Be empathetic and don’t make superficial assumptions about people or situations. Open your mind and heart to others rather than jumping to conclusions. You may find things are different than they initially ap-peared.

On Spiritual PracticeIn this age of technology and materialism, when many wonder what tomorrow will bring, the resurgence of spirituality is a normal phenomenon. I

For centuries, people have turned to religions or other belief systems for support and understanding. Yet it never resulted in a better world on a global level – an improved personal life perhaps, but not a better planet.

So one can wonder why, after centuries of religious or spiritual teachings on love, forgiveness, presence or service, the world situation has not improved spiritually; why acts of sharing and forgiveness are the exception, not the norm. We can guess that the majority of people weren’t ready for these teachings, that the failure to bring peace, love or the end of suffering on earth is the failure of humanity. After all, the spiritual realm did its job, didn’t it? So why aren’t people listening?

The answer lies in each of us. Our perception of the world is a very personal thing; it involves our mind and the infinite interpretations it can make about our experi-ences.

This is how most of us lead our lives: We base our actions on what our minds are telling us. Yet many spiri-tual teachings tell us to go the other way: love, meditate, watch your mind, forgive, practice compassion, open your heart.

Faith doesn’t abide by rules. Unlike belief, it has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with following one’s heart.

The discrepancy between the teachings and what we do with them is as wide as the gap between faith and belief. Faith is the mysterious spiritual touch that brings a sacred dimension to our life. Faith doesn’t abide by rules. Unlike belief, it has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with following one’s heart. Faith is our personal affair with our spiritual Self. Are we in a relation-ship with our soul or are we cut off from it?

We can tell by the quality of our life: A person who has faith acts from a place of trust and inner knowledge. A person who doesn’t have faith acts from the mind. This person doesn’t trust life and often second-guesses him-self. Faith is this indescribable feeling of knowing what’s right for oneself and acting on it. That’s what soul work is about: the inner knowledge of what one has to learn and do in this lifetime.

Every soul has its purpose, every heart its calling. The work required to discover it is a spiritual journey some feel drawn to take. As you embark on this path, the real adventure begins, a new perspective slowly arises, old attachments vanish to leave room for new experi-ences. Your outlook on life shifts to incorporate spiritual realities and your inner transformation is mirrored in the outer world.

A spiritual practice is the very simple act of getting in touch with your Self. Not with your mind, your feelings or your body, but with this sense of presence or being behind them.

Every spiritual journey leads to a better understand-ing of your place in the world. Spiritual practice helps you connect with your Self, which is a drop in the sea of consciousness. As you connect with consciousness, you slowly learn that there is an intelligent design underlying your life, and that the spiritual realm contains all you need to know. So why not pick up a spiritual practice?

How do we define spiritual practice? A spiritual prac-tice is the very simple act of getting in touch with your Self. Not with your mind, your feelings or your body, but with this sense of presence or being behind them.

How to go about it is a matter of personal preference. A few things should guide your choice: Religion and/or tradition do not matter, except to your heart, so it is very important to follow your intuition and not your mind (or another’s).

Practice will make all the difference: Spirituality is an experience, not an intellectual pastime. Discouragement is common and the best way to deal with it is not to ex-pect anything from your practice. Flowers only bloom in the right season, provided they were well cared for. Your spiritual practice also will bloom in the right season.
