Foreword

Please briefly take

us through your

journey in UBEL

I joined UBEL in 1986.

My first achievement

was completion of 3

O&M jobs at Obra,

Faridabad and Neiveli.

My real journey started

at Sarani site of MPEB

in Madhya Pradesh.

With the team work and exemplary execution we reduced the

shut down period.

During those days there was a huge gap in supply and demand.

There was a stiff competition from small time contractors. With

the efforts at Sarani our business prospects spread to all the

power stations of MPEB and other state power plants. The Sarani

turnover which was Rs. 22 Lacs in the year 1986, reached Rs. 3

Crores in the year 1993.

My journey spread overseas, with a job opportunity for

executing 8X300 MW power plant at Azoor at Kuwait. This was

the first job directly awarded by Ministry of Electricity and Water.

We doubled the profits over the estimation. MEW invited us to

participate in tenders in three power plants and we successfully

bagged 2 assignments and completed them. This international

exposure changed my career and boosted my confidence.

After completing the overseas assignments, I resumed at

projects division at Jamnagar. In 2001 we were executing our

first ever EPC job at Neyveli. There was a delay in execution and I

was chosen as the task force leader and posted at Neyveli. We

turned around the project and completed the job ahead of

schedule.

The year 2001 brought with it financial crisis. The company had

very few projects in hand. The morale of the people was very low

and the organisation was struggling for survival. With great

difficulty we managed to get a job worth Rs.3 cores for 4000 mt

fabrication and erection of the tallest building structure in the

region (104 M height). With team effort we completed the job

within the stipulated time frame. This led us to get many more

profitable jobs at RIL. This followed with assignments from

ESSAR, Vizag, Balisella and Jamnagar.

Projects is a very important strategy for UBEL, how do you

perceive the role of your team in this?

The critical factors my team will concentrate on are Quality,

Safety, timely completion and Customer satisfaction.

The Projects that we handle are diverse and situated in the

remotest parts of the country. What is your strategy in

successful handling of these?

Selection of right site execution team with members who are self

driven and having relevant expertise, is vital. We must provide

them with positive work culture, comfortable living conditions

and recreation facilities. Frequent visits of senior officials to site

will help boost morale, monitor work progress and get superior

results to achieve the organizational goals.

How do you keep your teams motivated?

We make special emphasis on delegation of responsibility,

improving quality by sharing knowledge, in-house training,

recognizing growth potential and rewarding them accordingly.

What are the latest achievement for the division?

Our remarkable accomplishments are:

We earned 'On time completion incentive twice' – Warora

Site, we have synchronized 4 Units in one calendar year.

Best Contractor Award' – Hazira Site

COREX Job - It was dismantled at Korea and transported to

Hazira for refurbishment, erection, and pre commissioning. This

job consists of 2 Towers of 108 M height, 55000 tons of

Structure and Equipment, 12,00,000 inch meter of piping.

Two consecutive years bagged Best Safety awards at

Jamnagar Site.

370 MW combined cycle power plant consists of 250 MW

Gas turbine, 120 MW Steam Turbine with switch yard, Electrical

and C&I. Successfully completed in 15 months at Utran for

Alstom.

Any interesting learnings you would like to share with our

readers...

Working with Chinese was an exceptional experience. Their

work culture, discipline, optimum design, production accuracy,

adopting modern construction methods were very educative for

us.

Time flies…Facebook is one year

old…Kudos!!!

In its present format, an attempt par

excellence to start with. The pace of

evolution is equally commendable.

However, to give it a balanced flavor,

the topics on Health, Safety and

Environment (HSE) need to be

judiciously covered in each issue thus

dosing a sense of responsibility in each

reader on this universally emphasized

issue.

Not forgetting the majority of better

halves as also to make it equally

participative and more appealing to this

important section as well at least one

recipe each covering Vegetarian / Non

vegetarian dish /Snacks must be invited

from them for sharing.

I am sure with rising readership, every

quarter, more such suggestions will

pour in to enhance its collectors value.

My best wishes to the entire team

Feedback

Dear friends,

“Nobody can do everything, but everyone

can do something.”

“We make a living by what we get, but we

make a life by what we give. -Winston

Churchill”,

Corporate social responsibility is represented by the contributions

undertaken by companies to society through its business activities

and its social investment. A step towards CSR, and on the occasion of

Independence Day, UBEL organized a BLOOD DONATION CAMP on

August 11, 2011 in the office premises where all our colleagues participated whole

heartedly and made that day special. 65 donors came forward and donated blood

and contributed towards a noble cause. We congratulate and pay our respect to all

the Donors. If you are already doing it, cheers ! If you haven't please do it today and

make a difference. An unknown life awaits your Love.

The 40th Annual General Meeting was held at Pune. It was grand and was chaired

by our beloved chairman and other Board of Directors were present. Our chairman

and MD answered questions shot by the members ably. Almost all the shareholders

who were present were happy while parting, since the achievements, current

progress and expansion plans were put forth before them elaborately. The entire

HO staff was also present.

The sincere efforts by our BD team is paying dividends. Many projects have come

into our kitty now. MONNET-BHEL, GAIL, PATA – EPC, GAIL, VIJAYAPUR-EPC,

ESSAR, HAZIRA, BHEL- NABINAGAR, BOKARO STEEL – EPC, BHEL – AMRAVATI to

name a few.

There is a MAD rush at Tulsibagh and Lakshmi Road. Every shop is full to the brim.

Could see ladies making a bee line towards cosmetic Shops…oh Diwali – the

festival of lights is fast approaching.. women wont discriminate between the

shops….she would shop at the roadside vendor and at a big Mall with the same

vigour. MEN! Tighten your belt…your better half would have made her budget for

this Diwali. Kids must have planned to burn your purse with Crackers…Kids! be

safe..…Please buy lots of DIYAS…let's make the earth bright instead of smoking it.

May this festival of lights… bring blessings of happiness to your home and heart.

Happy Diwali…

Here, we would like to mention that we are receiving overwhelming contributions

from all the readers, but due to space constraint, we could not give justice to every

article. But be sure, the same will be published in future.

With the initial hiccups and combating the tough situations during

the period of our coming into existence at Borai, we have now

reached the road to speedy completion of the Fabrication Unit.

Having commenced the civil construction in mid July last year, we

have now come to the stage of starting the above gantry level of

the shed construction. With the ordering of sophisticated

machinery, which is scheduled to arrive at our site in October –

November and the erection work likely to be completed by

November, the Unit is all set to commence production in January

2012.

We commit to release the first excise gate pass on 01.01.2012

We have endured all the pains of labor. Nevertheless, the past is over and it is the

future that beckons to us now. We are going the extra mile, to be successful. Thanks

to the timely support and guidance received from Mr. Zubair Chaudhary. He has

created an atmosphere of support and safety around us.

Above all, the togetherness and the sense of belonging among the employees have

paved way for achieving this goal.

and enjoy as we all are under constant stress, be it project

monitoring, deadlines, follow ups with clients, follow ups by

suppliers and sub-contractors. This was an initiative to help our

team members to find some time together where all of us can sit

back and relax.

All the top executives welcomed this decision and showed interest

in the detailing of the trip which created a sense of belonging .

In the beginning Projects, Business Development, Purchase &

Systems departments were identified for this excursion.

The lunch on reaching the hotel proved to be a catalyst for the

development of interpersonal relations of the personnel involved.

After lunch we went to Old Mahabaleshwar and visited the temple.

Next day started with Meditation with all actively participating.

Basic relaxation techniques and breathing exercises were taught by

Mr. A.V.Vartak for 30 minutes. This will, if practiced regularly, help

us to start every day at a fresh note.

After breakfast we all headed towards Pratapgarh, the natural

beauty was awesome, one really feels rejuvenated when one is in

the surroundings of nature in its purest form. After visiting

Pratapgarh we stopped at a water fall where everybody enjoyed the

rains and the feeling of being with nature to the fullest, these are

some memories that will permanently remain fresh in everybody's

minds

The outcome of the trip is visible and you can see the interpersonal

relations between persons from various departments has improved

and that gives us immense satisfaction that we could at least start a

gesture which will help us and our company to achieve great

heights.

Mind Mapping is one of the most talked about management tools today. Giving here a brief outline of what the tools is about.

Mind Mapping is a brainstorming tool and learning technique of visually arranging ideas and their interconnections. It can be used to graphically arrange the linkages of some central concept with other concepts into memorable treelike diagrams. It allows you to create, capture, organize, and communicate readily understood and highly interactive visual representations of complex ideas, information, and data.

Radial drawings have already been used for centuries to analyze all

kinds of problems.

²Note-taking and reporting.

²Brainstorm. Improve creativity.

²Capture ideas.

²Compare: Cause and Effect Diagram

²Clarifying of thoughts.

²Summarizing.

²Gain an overview. See topics in their context.

²Analyze and solve complex problems.

²Team building

To make notes on a subject using a Mind Map, draw it in the

following way:

² Write the title of the subject you are exploring in the center of the

page, and draw a circle around it.

² As you come across major subdivisions or subheadings of the topic

(or important facts that relate to the subject) draw lines out from

this circle. Label these lines with these subdivisions or

subheadings.

² As you "burrow" into the subject and uncover another level of

information (further subheadings, or individual facts) belonging

to the subheadings above, draw these as lines linked to the

subheading lines.

² Finally, for individual facts or ideas, draw lines out from the

appropriate heading line and label them.

² As you come across new information, link it in to the Mind Map

appropriately.

You can develop your own conventions to make your Mind Maps

more effective.

Use single words or simple phrases for information: Excess words

just clutter the Mind Map.

Print words: Joined up or indistinct writing can be more difficult to

read.

Use color to separate different ideas.

Use symbols and images: Pictures can help you to remember

information more effectively than words.

Using cross-linkages: You can draw in lines to show the cross-

linkages between related information.

Add a little humour or exaggeration wherever you can

Software for Mind Mapping

Benefits of using Mind Mapping software

You can draw mind maps by hand, during a lecture or meeting,

but the process can also be supported by specialized Mind

Mapping software. Mind Mapping software can be used on

several levels:

! Individual use. To increase personal effectiveness

! Use in teams. To increase creativity and team work

(brainstorming, staff meetings, project meetings, project

management, knowledge management).

! Use at events. To increase interaction and stakeholder

communication, visualize discussions and enable easy

reporting mechanisms in the follow-up of the events such as

conferences, workshops and seminars.

! Corporate use. To create an open and collaborative culture

and to standardize and support work processes

! A mind map can be collapsed or expanded to quickly increase

or decrease the level of detail.

! A mind map can be filtered (priorities, key words, colors) to

produce customized versions of the 'mother' Mind Map.

! Mind maps can be enriched by: texts, graphics, spreadsheet

info, links to files, websites and RSS-feeds.

! Mind maps can be linked to produce multi-maps.

! Mind Maps can be converted to almost all traditional forms of

communication

! Flexible idea capturing and filtering mechanisms.

! Various modes of presentation - Mind Map, website,

PowerPoint

! Reporting (Mind Map, Word, Outlook, Visio, etc).

! Implementation – project management

! Software can connect people in a direct and effective way to

information.

! Knowledge and Information processes are better integrated in

work of people.

! Information is better managed and needless duplication of

information is avoided as the information of the Mind Map

can be transformed and synchronized very easily.
