They were all born during the month of March! In his younger years, we knew him as Opie Taylor and Richie Cunningham, but today he’s a famous film director and producer, having brought us such memora- ble films as “Splash,” “Cocoon,” “Apollo 13,” “A Beau- tiful Mind” and “The Da Vinci Code.” Ron Howard ap- peared in his first movie at the age of 18 months, the 1956 film “Frontier Woman.” He portrayed Opie Taylor living in Mayberry from 1960 to 1968, and starred in “Happy Days” from 1974 to 1980. Howard was actu- ally a sixth cousin to his “Andy Griffith” co-star Don “Barney Fife” Knotts. Howard has been married to his high school sweetheart since 1975. March 2 seems to be a popular day for the birth of musicians. In 1950, mellow crooner and drummer Kar- en Carpenter of the popular 1970s duo The Carpenters was born in Connecticut. On the same day five years later, Jay Osmond of Osmond Brothers fame was born, and the next year, John Cowsill of the 1960s pop group The Cowsills made his appearance. Jon Bon Jovi and English musician Chris Martin of Coldplay share that March 2 birth date as well. turn the page for more! Tidbits’ Quote of the Day! MARCH BABIES (continued):• The 7-foot, 1-inch (2.16-m) tall, 325-pound (147-kg) basketball star Shaquille O’Neal turns 39 this month. O’Neal traverses the court wearing a size 23 shoe. He was drafted out of Louisiana State Univer-sity as the first overall pick in NBA’s 1992 draft by the Orlando Magic. His 18-year career has moved him from the Magic to the Los Angeles Lakers, on to the Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cava-liers and in 2010, to the Boston Celtics. He’s racked up three All-Star Game MVP awards, three Finals MVP’s, and was selected for the All-NBA team 14 times. During his hot 2000 season, he was the NBA MVP, All-Star Game MBP and Finals MVP, one of only three players to accomplish this feat in the same year. O’Neal is fifth in all-time points scored. Off the court, he has released four rap albums and starred in two of his own reality shows. • The first British royal baby to have a public chris-tening was Princess Eugenie of York, the younger daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, former Duchess. Eugenie, born in March of 1990, is sixth in the line of succession to the throne. • The Muscular Dystrophy Labor Day Telethon has been hosted every year since 1966 by comedian Jerry Lewis. Born Jerome Levitch, Lewis got his start in 1946 when he paired up with Dean Mar-tin, and the two began a series of comedy films. In the late 1960s, Lewis taught a film directing class at the University of Southern California, teaching students that included a young Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. The first MD fundraiser brought in $1,002,114, while 2010’s reached $58,919,838. Since its inception, it has raised over $2.5 billion.

• It was a wonderful day in the neighborhood from 1968 to 2001 when March baby Fred Rogers hosted the children’s program “Mister Rogers’ Neighbor-hood.” A typical episode might include a field trip to a local business, a visit with the television audi-ence, a live guest, and a time to feed his fish Fennel and Frieda. The gentle, soft-spoken Fred had a mu-sic composition degree, and in fact, composed most of the music used on the Emmy-winning program. Rogers was also an ordained Presbyterian minister. Many of his trademark cardigan sweaters were made by his mother. You can view a red cardigan worn by Rogers at the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History. Interestingly, Rogers never saw his sweater as red, since he was red-green color blind.

• Born in March of 1956, Swedish skier Ingemar Stenmark has won more races than any other skier in history. The gold medal winner in slalom and gi-ant slalom at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics began skiing at age five, winning his first national compe-tition at age eight.

• The winner of “American Idol’s” fourth season,

1 in 6 Cats Have Heart Disease!

Please call 303.663.2287 (CATS) for more information or visit www.catspecialist.com

Cats are the masters of hiding illness and they commonly have sudden onset of life threatening cardiac signs. Apparently healthy cats that undergo elective anesthetic procedures like dental cleaning, spays & neuters and then unexpectedly die, most likely have underlying heart disease as the cause. The Cat Specialist doctors have studied this problem and they wrote one of the first papers in 2005 defining how common ‘silent’ heart disease is in the cat.

The good news is that Cat Specialist has led the way in doing pre-anesthetic echocardiograms. Early diagnosis of ‘silent’ heart disease and proper treatment allow cats to live normal lives. It is very rare in our practice to see sudden death syndrome because our doctors are very aware of this deadly problem. If you have questions please call our hospital.

Feline Quotes and Sayings: “Have you ever won an argument with a cat

. . . really?” - Doc

Dangers are Everywhere – Protect Your Cat

Indoor and Outdoor plants: many common plants are toxic to cats. Eating the leaves and fruits can be deadly. Ask your greenhouse expert to run a check on the plants you have around your house. Just a few plants I saw while shopping that are deadly: foxglove, lilies, belladonna, iris to name a few.

Bees, wasps, spider, ants, centipedes, and most creepy/crawlies have stings, venom and make a poor meal. Cats are attracted to motion and the thrill of the hunt.

Environmental Contamination: oil, gasoline, grease, fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, pesticides can be deadly poisons. Clean up any spills and store dangerous chemicals in a safe area.

Mosquitoes transmit heartworm, Ticks transmit lymes disease, Bats/Skunks/Raccoons bites can transmit rabies, and Fleas from Squirrels/Mice carry bubonic plague.

A Rattlesnake’s bite can be deadly. We live in rattlesnake country!

Excess Sun on some white cats’ ears, face, and nose can cause skin cancer.

Construction/Cleaning/Painting all have trauma/toxic danger for a curious cat.

Hunting can transmit parasitic/bacterial/viral diseases to cats.

Cars/Motorcycles/Bicycles can be a deadly combination if your cat ventures outdoors. Trauma injuries are common in cats that go outdoors.

Believe it or not – cats/kittens sleeping with humans have been smothered when people roll over on their pets.

Tidbits would like to give a special Thanks to Bob Lowry

of Allstate Insurance and Timothy Brown of American Family Insurance for helping to provide new desks for the

children at Sedalia Elementary School!

Sedalia Elementary school principal, George Boser, was instrumental in securing 66 new first grade desks through a matching grant donation. George contacted local insurance agents, Tim Brown with American Family and Bob Lowry with Allstate and proposed an offer for them to match the amount of funds that he could raise to purchase new desks.

In all, a total of over $2000 was raised and the new desks were purchased! The excited students exclaimed that they would now be able to write and draw without punching holes through their papers!

If you would like to find out about other needs

at the school and how you can be help, simply email Mr. Boser at: [email protected]. or call him at 303-387-5500.

Tourmaline

Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewlers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. For more information on gemstones or jewelry of any kind call 303.841.2666

There is an old Egyptian legend that says Tourma-line has a wide variety of colors because, as it made its way up from the center of the earth, it passed over a rainbow. In so doing, it took on all the colors of the rainbow. Indeed, if you like a variety of color in your gems, you will love Tourmaline. Even the name “Tourmaline” helps to define the gem as it comes from two Singhalese words “tura mali” which loosely translated means “stone with mixed colors.” There are Tourmaline gems from red to green and from blue to yellow. They often have two or more colors in a single stone. Some Tourmaline changes color when taken outdoors and then changes again when brought into artificial light. No two Tourmaline are exactly alike so you can probably find one to meet a variety of your personal needs or moods. The wide color spectrum of Tourma-line surpasses that of all other precious stones. In ancient times magical powers were attributed to this stone. Today it is considered the gemstone of passion and friendship. Some believe that if you give your beloved a Tourmaline that your love will be miraculously enduring.

Carrie Underwood, is an “Okie from Muskogee.” Born there in March of 1983 to a sawmill worker and elementary school teacher, Underwood gradu-ated as salutatorian of her high school class. She went on to graduate magna cum laude from Okla-homa’s Northeastern State University with a de-gree in mass communications. Prior to her 2004 audition for “Idol,” Underwood had never been on an airplane. She has been on People magazine’s “100 Most Beautiful People” list four years in a row.

• Two of the actors who have portrayed James Bond were March babies. Welsh actor Timothy Dalton was the secret agent in 1987’s “The Liv-ing Daylights” and 1989’s “License to Kill.” When Dalton was just 22 years old, he was approached by Albert Broccoli to replace Sean Connery for the role. Dalton turned him down, feeling he was too young to play Bond. He was actually consid-ered four separate times before finally taking it at age 46. British actor and March baby Daniel Craig is the current Bond, the sixth actor have the part. We’ve seen him in 2006’s “Casino Royale” and 2008’s “Quantum of Solace.”

• In the midst of the JFK assassination contro-versy was the figure Jack Ruby, the killer of Lee Harvey Oswald. As deputies prepared to transfer Oswald from police headquarters to the county jail, Ruby stepped from the crowd and shot the 24 year old in the abdomen during a live television broadcast. A Dallas nightclub owner, Ruby had connections with gangsters, leading to the theory that Ruby was part of a large-scale conspiracy. He denied it, stating that his only motive was to spare Jackie Kennedy the trauma of having to ap-pear at Oswald’s trial. Less than four months after the murder, Ruby was convicted and received the death penalty. His lawyers appealed, arguing that he could not have received a fair trial in the city of Dallas. The appellate court agreed and granted a new trial in a different venue, overturning his con-viction and sentence. Two months before the new trial was to begin, Ruby entered Dallas’ Parkland Hospital (the same hospital where both Kennedy and Oswald had been declared dead), suffering from pneumonia. One day later, he was diagnosed with liver, lung and brain cancer, and three weeks later, Ruby was dead. To the very end he main-tained that he alone was responsible for Oswald’s death, saying, “There is nothing to hide. There was no one else.”

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:

ALBERT EINSTEINThe name of Albert Einstein is synonymous with the word “genius,” but it nearly didn’t turn out that way. Follow along as Tidbits examines the life of this famous physicist, philosopher and author, born in March of 1879.• Experiencing difficulties with language, Albert Einstein didn’t begin to speak until he was nearly four years old. He didn’t read until age nine and was considered slow and even borderline mentally retarded by some of his teachers. The headmaster of his school advised Einstein’s parents to send him to a trade school. There was nothing wrong with his intelligence — the real problem was dyslexia, and when he transferred to a school that stressed “cre-ative thinking and hands-on learning,” Einstein’s academic performance took a giant leap forward. • In 1896, at the age of 17, he renounced his citi-zenship in the German Kingdom of Wurttemberg to avoid conscription in the military. He enrolled in Switzerland’s Federal Institute of Technology,

where he received his diploma in 1901 and ac-quired Swiss citizenship the same year. When Ein-stein couldn’t find a teaching position after months of searching, he took a job as an examiner in the Swiss Patent Office evaluating patent applications for electromagnetic devices, a position he held for seven years. • During his employ at the Patent Office, Einstein earned his doctorate from the University of Zurich and began publishing papers on the photoelectric effect, relativity, and matter and energy. His ear-lier papers attempted to prove that atoms exist and were written at a time when physicists did not ac-cept this view. • The 20th century’s best-known equation was Ein-stein’s E = mc2, which suggests that small amounts of mass could be converted into large amounts of energy. He was finally being recognized by the

academic world and by 1908, at age 29, was con-sidered a leading scientist. A teaching position was finally his at the University of Zurich. • By 1914, Einstein was once again a German citizen and director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physics. In 1921, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. • In 1933, as the Nazis rose to power in Germany under Adolf Hitler, Jews were barred from teach-ing at universities. The Nazis began book burn-ings, and Einstein’s works were some of the first to go. His name was on a list of assassination targets. He renounced his German citizenship, emigrated to the United States and became the Professor of Theoretical Physics at Princeton University.• In 1939, as World War II was brewing, Einstein wrote a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt warn-

ing him of the possibility that the Nazis might be working on an atomic bomb. It was Einstein’s recommendation that the United States should begin research into the use of uranium, and the top secret “Manhattan Project” was put in place to develop the first nuclear weapons. Although Ein-stein himself did not work on the bomb project, he later expressed sadness that the bomb was used against civilian populations, saying, “I made one great mistake in my life — when I signed the let-ter to President Roosevelt, but there was some jus-tification — the danger that the Germans would make them.” • Einstein made one last citizenship change in his life in 1940, becoming an American citizen. Four months after his death in 1955, chemical ele-ment 99 was named Einsteinium. In 1999, he was named “Person of the Century” by Time magazine.

Need to Boost Retirement Income? Consider Variable

Annuities Here’s a sobering statistic: 46% of workers surveyed had little or no confi-dence that they will have enough mon-ey to live comfortably throughout their retirement years, according to the 2010 Retirement Confidence Survey, issued by the Employee Benefit Research In-

stitute. So you may want to explore all possible retirement sav-ings vehicles — including a variable annuity.

Generally speaking, when saving for retirement, it’s a good idea to contribute as much as possible to your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. But if you’ve fully funded those plans for the year, and you still have some money left to invest, you may want to consider a variable annuity, which offers these benefits:

Tax deferred earnings — Your variable annuity’s earnings have the opportunity to grow tax deferred, which means your invest-ment dollars can accumulate faster than if they were placed in an investment on which you paid taxes every year. When you eventually make withdrawals, your earnings will be taxed at your ordinary income tax rate. (For nonqualified annuities, you won’t have to pay additional taxes on the amount you contrib-uted.) There are no tax advantages to investing in a variable annuity with qualified money. A variety of investment options — Variable annuities allow in-dividuals to invest in several different professionally managed investments, known as “subaccounts.” You can choose the sub-accounts that best fit your risk tolerance, time horizon and long-term objectives. Keep in mind, though, that diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss. No contribution limits — Each year, you can contribute far more to a variable annuity than you can to your 401(k) and your IRA. In fact, you can contribute virtually unlimited amounts to your annuity. Payout flexibility — A variable annuity provides you with flex-ibility in gaining access to your money. You could, for instance, collect a lump sum. But you might find it more advantageous to take your payments over a specified number of years. You could even choose to receive a lifetime income stream. Guaranteed death benefit — When you die, your beneficiary is usually guaranteed the amount originally invested, minus pre-vious withdrawals. Some variable annuities offer death benefit options, which may increase the death benefit over time. Guar-antees are based on the claims-paying ability of the issuing in-surance company. While variable annuities do offer some key advantages, there are also some considerations to discuss with your financial ad-visor before investing. For one thing, variable annuities are not suitable for everyone. A variable annuity is unquestionably a long-term investment. In fact, you may be assessed a surrender charge if you pull money out of the contract within the first sev-eral years after you purchase it. However, some variable annui-ties allow you to withdraw a portion of your investment, such as 10% of your purchase payments, without incurring a surrender charge, while others allow full withdrawals. Another point to keep in mind is that if you tap into your annuity before you reach age 59½, you may be hit with a 10% early withdrawal penalty.

One final note: A variable annuity is just that — variable. The value of your annuity will go up and down, based on what’s happening in the financial markets, and there’s no guarantee that your annuity won’t lose principal. Also, variable annuities vary greatly in their terms, features and fees, so before investing, consider shopping around.

Consult with your financial advisor to determine which variable annuity may be appropriate for your needs. Ultimately, though, you may well find that a variable annuity may be the final piece to your retirement income puzzle.

Many Christians have a gold mine in their home and do not even know it. You may even be one of them. A gold mine…in my home…what in the world do you mean? I am talking about the Bible. Many people have a copy that simply sits on the shelf or is used as a decorator piece on a coffee table or hutch. It lays there month in and month out, collecting dust and looking pretty, but never having an impact on our lives. And the reason I call it a gold mine is that anything and everything you will ever need or want in this life can be found in its pages. The Bible is the living and active Word of God, the very one that created you and me. Jesus is called “The Word of Life” and for anyone who will read their Bible, that is just what you will find, LIFE! Listen to what The Message says in 1 Tim 3:16, “There’s nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us.”In these pages of the Bible you will discover that there is a wonderful relationship waiting for you. It is Jesus Christ himself, waiting with open arms to come into your life and to begin an eternal relationship with you. You see Jesus, through the death of the cross, paid the ultimate price for you and me, so that we would not have to. He took your sins, He took your sickness and disease, and now He is inviting you to come and live an abundant life with Him. But each of us has a free will; God will never make you do anything. But the Good News is He is as close as a single prayer. Again, listen to what “The Message” says in Romans 10:10, The word that saves is right here, as near as the tongue in your mouth, as close as the heart in your chest. It’s the word of faith that welcomes God to go to work and set things right for us. This is the core of our preaching. Say the welcoming word to God—”Jesus is my Master”—embracing, body and soul, God’s work of doing in us what he did in raising Jesus from the dead. That’s it. You’re not “doing” anything; you’re simply calling out to God, trusting him to do it for you. That’s salvation. With your whole being you embrace God setting things right, and then you say it, right out loud: “God has set everything right between him and me!” Let me encourage you to find a good church this weekend and find out more about this wonderful relationship with Jesus Christ. You will never be the same again!
