COLLEGE NEWS
CollegePrincipal’sReport
I would like to acknowledge staff who are retiring or
leaving at the end of this year for their wonderful
contributions to Great Lakes College, Forster High
School and NSW Public Education over many years.
To Nick Campbell, Leanne Wilson Col Stewart
(Forster Campus), Helen Ackland, Sue Goodison,
Jenny Saad, Tim Meagher, Rob Freijs, Dee Hardinge
(Senior Campus), Jan Duggan, Rob Ruff and Diana
Holme and Steve Colditz (Tuncurry Campus) on
behalf of the staff and community, thank you and
enjoy your new endeavours.
Judy Hall Principal of Forster Campus since the
college opened in 2003 is also retiring after an
outstanding career in public education in many
schools across NSW. It was wonderful to join many
staff and friends to celebrate Judy’s farewell on
Friday November 14 at Tiona Conference centre.
Judy’s passion for ongoing learning for staff and
students, her dedication to ongoing improvement
in student outcomes and relentless commitment for
equity in Aboriginal education will be her legacy.
Her leadership at Forster Campus has forged a great
reputation for that campus, while never losing sight
of the larger vision of Great Lakes College. To you
Judy, from all members in the Great Lakes Learning
Community thank you and enjoy your future
travelling and spending time with your family.
To the many parents/carers and community
members who have supported the college this year,
may I thank you.
To the students, teaching and non‐teaching staff,
congratulations on another outstanding year
academically, culturally and on the sporting field.
Your combined efforts have again added to the
excellent reputation not only of Great Lakes College
but the Great Lakes Learning Community and NSW
Public Education.
Merry Christmas to all.

CarolsbyCandlelight
In addition to MADD (Music, Art, Dance & Drama)
Concert preparations, some singers from the
College Vocal Ensemble are getting into the
Christmas spirit already! They have been busy
rehearsing two items for the Tuncurry‐Forster
Rotary Club’s 40th annual Carols by Candlelight.
Great Lakes College is one of four local schools
providing individual items throughout the program.
Held on Monday, December 15, the evening
features traditional carol singing accompanied by
the community’s own Great Lakes Band. Carols by
Candlelight commences at 6.30pm in John Wright
Park, and families are invited to bring something
comfy to sit on as well as their best singing voices!
People are encouraged to buy a candle/glow stick
to help create a festive setting. Food and drinks are
also available for purchase, and please bring a little
extra for the bucket collection in support of the
Great Lakes Band. This ensemble provides fantastic
and valuable opportunities for our young musicians
to learn and grow as instrumentalists.
Students who would like to join in and represent
the College are asked to see Mrs Richardson at
Tuncurry Campus or Mr Jensen at Forster Campus
for the music and rehearsal details. Parents can visit

The Great Lakes College student team and staff
team won their respective events at the local
dragon boat regatta at Forster Keys on November
23.
The Junior Team defeated four Naval Cadet teams
and one representative team from the north coast.
The team consisted of a combination of students,
from all three campuses, that have attended
Dragon Boating for sport over the last few years.
These students included:
Senior Campus
Elizabeth Maybury
Sarah Whitehouse
Tuncurry Campus
Alistar Sheehan
Joshua Dilger
Cian Pearce
Taylor Sutton
James Newman
Mitchell Brooks
Sam Butler

The team worked together like they had been
paddling for years. They were disciplined, strong
and determined to win. They also had a lot of fun.
What a great day. Many parents were there,
making it a real family affair. Dragon Boat NSW was
so thrilled to see so many junior and school teams
at the regatta. They gave our juniors DBNSW pins
for being so keen (as well as the trophy for
winning). Naval cadets were bused in from all over
NSW. The Great Lakes College students won despite
paddling against a representative junior team from
Manning, which also included junior paddlers from
Newcastle, Nambucca Heads and Coffs Harbour.
Not bad for a school team!
Our staff team also took out first place against the
Gathan Warriors (Gloria Rowsell, Kurt Lewis) and
RDA and Welsey Mission (in the final).

KarlVonBusseDesignExcursion
During Week 10 of Term 3 a group of talented
students form Forster Campus and Tuncurry
Campus attended work experience at Karl Von
Busse in Sydney.
While on work experience, the students observed
the Karl Von Busse teachers and students in their
classrooms. All their teachers are working designers
who can give students insight into what it is like to
work in the design industry. They were each given a
design project to complete and were able to put
together a creative portfolio. Students gained good
insights into careers in graphic, interior and fashion
design. At the end of the week they were also put
through a rigorous interview process where they
presented their design portfolio to Karl Von Busse.
All students agreed it was a very worthwhile
experience. They were great ambassadors for our
college.
We plan to return again next year. Interested
design students should see their careers adviser
and put in an expression of interest for 2015.

HearttoHeartVolunteering
On Saturday the 8th November, a number of
students and staff volunteered for the Elite
Challenge Triathlon at Forster Keys. It was an early
start, much to the delight of staff members Annette
Whiting, Jacinta Bowen, Jenny Saad and Trish
Jarman and community members Nick Bown and
John Whiting. They were eager to begin work at the
registration table and setting up the aid station, and
they did a marvellous job!
It was a lovely, warm day under the shade of the
trees by the water at the Keys and it was all in
support of not only the community, but also for the
Heart to Heart girls. Forster Campus students Kieara
White, Tully Church, Chelsea Gilbert, Ocea
Witherow, Tenneal McMahon, Danni Wood and
Chloe Malzard all gave up their Saturday to hand
out water to the thirsty athletes. The girls enjoyed
the water fight instigated by the director of the
station and were commended on their “sense of
fun”.
We look forward to the next fundraising event.
Thank you to all the staff who volunteered to help
support the Heart to Heart experience.

P & C NEWS
This is the final P & C report for 2014. We have had
a successful year both with increased member
numbers, and consistent attendances at our
monthly meetings. Our guest speakers have
included executive staff from all the main
educational disciplines who have presented an
excellent summary of their particular subjects, and
on what our children will be taught. The P & C has
been able to make a donation to the College from
profits obtained through the College canteens, and
we hope that this will continue.
At our last meeting, we had a very interesting and
insightful talk given by two members of the local
Police Command. One of their roles is police
liaison between the College and students (and their
families) when the police have to become involved
in some aspect of the student’s life. It is certainly a
concern that some students are making poor
choices in their lives, and it was certainly helpful to
see how the police can help minimise the effect of
these choices, and hopefully help steer the students
down a better path.
I was present at the recent Tuncurry Campus Parent
Information evening which was mainly for parents
and carers of Year 7 students entering the campus
in 2015. There was a good attendance, and a brief
run down was given on the role of the P & C at the
College. All parents and carers were encouraged to
consider becoming involved with the P&C, and I
fielded a couple of enquiries re same after the
event.
Issue 8 – Term 4 – Week 8 Page 7
Our last meeting will be a Christmas wind up
gathering scheduled for 7pm Dec 3, at the Forster
Campus library. We intend to continue meeting at
a similar time /date next year.
Warm wishes for the upcoming festive and holiday
season and a special thanks to all who have helped
running the canteens and the P & C throughout the
year.

FORSTER CAMPUS
Principal’sReport
Finally, my last Principal’s report for the Dolphin.
I would like to extend to all parents, staff, students
and community members my sincere thanks for
your outstanding support of me as principal of
Forster Campus since its inception in2003.
The years have simply flown by and I am very proud
of what has been achieved here.
We have had outstanding success in the academic
arena with many of our students graduating with
high ATARs thus securing them well‐deserved
places in the universities of their choice. Their fields
of study have been many and varied, and I am
especially proud of those students who have taken
on studies in education to become teachers. It gives
me special joy knowing that an ex‐captain from our
campus is now a teacher within the College.
So many of our students have gone on to take up
apprenticeships with local industries and businesses
and have even competed on the world stage with
their skills. Others have succeeded in their TAFE
studies and are now working within the community
and abroad.
I really have enjoyed working with our student
leaders and Student Representative Council. Over
the years these students, so ably supported by the
community and wider student body, have raised
countless thousands of dollars for local and
international charities. Such generosity humbles
me.
So many parents have assisted our school in all
manner of ways – with environmental working
bees, assisting with literacy, mentoring,
transporting students to sporting carnivals and
competitions, being guest presenters in classrooms,
working with students in the arts, helping out at the
canteen and our Chill Out Breakfast program – it
really is amazing.
Most of all, though, I am so blessed to have been
principal of a dynamic, dedicated and professional
teaching and administrative support team. Our
teaching and support staff are simply amazing in
their great capacity for work and compassion.
As I move on to the next stage of my life, I wish only
the best for Great Lakes College – and Forster
Campus in particular.
Blessings to you all

Year8Interclassdebating
Year 8 students at Forster Campus have been
studying a unit titled “Argue the Point” which looks
at famous speeches, protest songs and debating.
For the first time in years, we are holding an ‘inter
class’ debate in Week 9. Weeks 5, 6 and 7 have
consisted of three rounds of debates within each
class. Every student is improving with each attempt,
and their confidence is growing! It is wonderful to
watch the students work in small groups and
confidently present their controversial arguments
to the class. They are learning how to research,
work cooperatively with others, articulate their
ideas and speak confidently in front of others.
Next week, teachers will select a team of star
debaters to go up against another class in Week 9.
The topic will be given to them beforehand so the
students will have plenty of time to prepare
persuasive and convincing speeches. Year 8 are
looking forward to the challenge and the friendly
competition.

Year6TransitionDay
Thursday the November 20 saw over 170 students
from all local partner schools take part in the
annual transition day at Forster Campus. The day
was designed to give next year’s students a ‘crash
course’ in high school life and also a great
opportunity to develop new relationships with both
their peers and the teaching staff for next year.
Students undertook a variety of activities
throughout the day stemming from ‘getting to
know’ people activities, mini taster lessons from a
variety of KLAs and also a presentation of some of
our current students’ drama and musical items.
These were designed to demonstrate what is to be
expected during the new year whilst also
highlighting some of the excellent opportunities
students have available to them at GLC.
There were over 20 staff and 30 peer leaders that
took part on the day to make it a fluent and positive
experience, and they are to be commended for
their professionalism and effort during the day.
We hope that all students both enjoyed and learnt
as much as possible during the experience, and we
hope to see you all early next year.

TUNCURRY CAMPUS
Principal’sReport
As I outlined in our last edition, we have had a
number of staff changes at Tuncurry campus for
2015. Jessica Warren was successful at merit
selection for the teacher position in HSIE and we
congratulate her on this fine achievement. We have
Issue 8 – Term 4 – Week 8 Page 9
also been fortunate to have a new graduate,
Gabriella King, appointed to the English/History
faculty. In addition we have advertisements for
three new teacher positions in Mathematics, HSIE
and English.
Currently, our Deputy Principal, Nigel Wells, is on
paternity leave following the birth of his daughter
Edie. Adriene Muscat is relieving in this position
until the end of November. Head Teacher, Tom
Kosteliz is also on leave supporting his daughter
who has undergone surgery.
As a school we have been very busy working on our
new strategic plan for 2015‐7. At the recent Year 9
and Year 7 2015 parent meetings, we conducted a
survey on parent needs in terms of supporting
student learning at home. In addition, we are
having a stall at the Tuncurry markets where we are
hoping to both promote the current work of the
school and consult with the community about our
future directions. I have been impressed by staff
and student support for this event and look forward
to chatting to market goers about our wonderful
school.
At our last week Celebration assembly we invested
the new SRC into their new positions and heard
from the school public speaking champions. The
demonstration of student achievement and talent
was most impressive.
Our environment team has been working hard this
year to improve the gardens and grounds. Over the
last holiday, we had an area of the playground
cleared of lamandra grass and turfed. It has made a
very big impact on the beauty of the playground
and provided a very comfortable sitting space for
students. During the holidays there will be a new
glass panel door and viewing panel installed in the
support unit to improve the quality of support for
students during time out.
Whilst students have completed their Semester 2
examinations, students are continuing to do
assessable work which supports information for
class placements in 2015. In addition, there have
been a range of end of year reward activities
organised by Year Advisers and regular attendance
is a prerequisite for students wishing to participate.
I look forward to seeing many of you at our end of
year Presentation and Merit assemblies where we
will be celebrating our many achievements as a
school. As always, it is a privilege to work for the
betterment of the school community and I greatly
value the partnership we have with parents in
educating our students. As this is the last edition of
the Dolphin for 2014, I take this opportunity to wish
you all the best for the festive season and look
forward with great enthusiasm to another excellent
year in 2015.

DeputyPrincipal’sReport
It is amazing to think that we are almost at the end
of 2014. We have seen achievements in all facets of
education including the academic, sporting and
cultural arenas. Our students have represented us
with pride in everything from academic
competitions to community events such as the
recent Tuncurry market display.
As it draws closer to the end of 2014, and we busily
plan for 2015, there are a few reminders from the
Deputy Principal’s desk.
Firstly, it is expected that students attend school
each day to access the full range of learning
opportunities available. There will be variations to
routine on specific dates, such as the Year 7 and
Year 8 Rewards Excursions, and these are seen as
normal school days. If your child is not attending
these excursions they are still expected to attend
school on that day. Any absences will require
explanation in writing from parents/caregivers.
While students are on site and representing the
school on excursions, I would like to remind
parents/caregivers of the importance of school
uniform. This does provide us with a campus
identity, keeps our students safe and helps us to
identify our students both on and off site. We ask
that our students wear the correct school uniform,
including footwear each day. If your family is
experiencing financial difficulty in addressing this
need, please contact the school, as financial
assistance may be available. This may be helpful in
your planning for 2015.
Some key dates for parents at this important time
of year include the release of school reports and
the final day of school. Attendance for students is
mandatory until Wednesday 17th of December.
Student reports will be issued on either Monday the
15th of December or Tuesday the 16th of December.
We ask that parents /caregivers sit down with their
child and discuss the levels of achievement
indicated and the individual comment that our class
room teachers have written. Our students have
indicated that verbal feedback is very important to
their learning and your part in this process is much
appreciated.
To all of our hardworking staff, students,
parents/caregivers and volunteers I wish you a
happy and safe Christmas, and I thank you for your
outstanding contribution to education in the Great
Lakes community.

AboriginalMathsNumeracyDay
Our team of 14 Aboriginal students from Year 9 and
10 were the victors in the recent Aboriginal Maths
Numeracy Day competition, which was hosted by
the Senior Campus. The day was a huge success and
many schools from the area came to participate.
The MC of the day was local Biripi man, Jaycent
Davis, who made the day extra fun with his sense of
humour and impressive knowledge of our culture.
Wade Miranda of Year 10 took out the overall
individual player of the day and his team won the
team event as well as the Tuncurry Campus, taking
the overall School Champion Award.
We would like to thank the sponsors, Bunnings,
McDonalds and Stockland Forster. Also a big thank
you to the Senior Campus staff, Don Robertson,
Dave Lewers, Ian Robertson and all of the staff
helpers who made this great day possible.

On Wednesday November 12, Margie Donnelly
from Homebase, Deb Cougle and Karyn Pol took our
girls for the afternoon out to Redhead. We met
Mandy Davis there, and she took us for a walk
down to beach. She showed us a tree that has
special, unique and cultural significance for our
local Aboriginal people. It is known as the “Crying
Tree,” and is located on the shore and has been
there for many, many years. Mandy told us the
Dreamtime story of Gulambarra, a clever man with
spiritual powers and who was loved and respected
by his people, and she explained how the “Crying
Tree” came to be. This story can be found in the
Worimi History and Culture kit and can be accessed
in our campus.
We then relaxed on the sand and Mandy yarned to
us about connecting to Country, totems and how
important our culture is. We all had a memorable
afternoon, sharing stories and eating ice cream. We
would like to thank Margie for organising such a
great afternoon and Mandy for sharing such a
beautiful story of our area.

between 11 and 18 year old. Wallis Lake first grade and reserve grade coaches, Herb Klemperer and Tony Russ who
will be assisted by a number of Wallis Lake players, will run these clinics.
Herb has played at Rapid Vienna the top Austrian side and played and coached in different countries in Africa as well
as a lot of clubs in the ACT and NSW. Being at the helm of the Great Lakes Premier League Side Wallis Lake, Herb
has in addition to developing his attractive style of play, has also guided the side to two Minor Premierships and a
Grand Final win this year in the prestigious Mid North Coast Premier League Competitions
These sessions are free of charge and we would to recommend any player in the area in these age groups to come
along, There will be plenty of instructors available and all attendees will have a good time and learn some important
skills. These clinics are also for the players trying out for Premier League.
Details are Sundays 7th, 14th and 21st of December at Boronia Park between 9am and 11am with a sausage after the
clinic. Bring your boots, sun screen and a water bottle.
