IRISH INFO (continued): wooden staff, banishing all the snakes from

Ireland. Because there were no snakes in Ireland, it’s believed this was merely symbolic of Patrick driving out the evil and pagan philosophies.

• Patrick wasn’t made a saint until the early 17th century, hundreds of years after his death in the year 461. March 17 is the anniversary of his death and is his religious feast day.

• Although we think of the color green when St. Patrick is mentioned, blue was the first color to represent the hero. In 1783, The Order of St. Patrick was founded, the senior order of chivalry and fellowship of knights. The Order of the Thistle already used green for their uniforms and the Order of the Garter used dark blue, so the Order of St. Patrick used a shade of sky blue. Military uniforms were of “St. Patrick’s Blue” and during the time of King Henry VIII, and the flag of Ireland was a gold harp on a blue background. The harp remains as the country’s national emblem today.

• Between 1846 and 1900, about 2,873,000 people emigrated from Ireland to America, making it the second largest nationality group of immigrants, second only to Germany. The most predominant occupation of those newcomers was that of skilled weaver.

• In 2010, about 34.7 million U.S. residents claimed ancestors from Ireland. What were the most common Irish surnames of these folks? The last names of Murphy, Kelly, and O’Sullivan are considered the top three “most Irish.” Other common Irish surnames include Walsh, O’Brien, Byrne, Ryan, O’Connor, O’Neill, and O’Reilly.

• Ireland has had its influence on geographical locations in the U.S. Seven communities are named Shamrock, including locations in Texas, Oklahoma, and West Virginia. Sixteen other towns are named Dublin, sharing the name with Ireland’s capital. North Carolina is home to the community of Emerald Isle, population 3,655.

• St. Patrick’s Day often brings beer and taverns to mind, but that tradition didn’t start in Ireland. The Irish Parliament declared the day a religious holiday in 1903, meaning that all the pubs were closed. In 1970, that bill was overturned and the day became a national holiday rather than a religious observance.

• The tradition of a St. Patrick’s Day parade began in America, not Ireland. New York City was home to the first parade, held on March 17, 1762. Irish soldiers serving in the British army organized the celebration to honor the Catholic feast day of Ireland’s patron saint. Today, New York’s parade is the largest in the world with more than 200,000

A Conundrum, Wrapped in an Enigma, Wrapped in a Conundrum – FIP

Noxious, horrible, deadly, frustrating, heartless, nasty, not right . . . are terms used to describe this disease. Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) has a ~100% mortality rate and no treatment has proven effective to date. “The mean survival time after definitive diagnosis was 16 days.” If the affected cat is healthy and has a good immune system he will die much quicker. If the affected cat is sick or immune compromised the disease does not spread quickly and the disease lingers. The disease mimics many of the common and uncommon diseases that cats acquire. The disease is caused by a corona virus. There are 4 common corona viruses that are contagious among cats and they live in the gastrointestinal tract usually causing a self-limiting diarrhea. FIP is a deadly mutation of any of the four common corona viruses. Most cats have the common corona viruses and only a select few cause the virus to change into the killing form. The FIP virus once acquired does not spread readily amongst other cats in a group unless there is over-crowding, excessive stress or a particularly ‘hot’ strain.FIP has a chameleon nature . . . if you think it should act one way it will act another. There are two forms: a wet form that primary surfaces with fluid loss into organs and body cavities due to the destruction of the blood vessel walls and the dry form which can linger for months to years showing a variety of clinical signs – none that are definitive. Veterinary science has yet to develop a simple, reliable test for FIP. A definitive diagnosis antemortem can be extremely challenging. Having a virus that mimics so many other diseases and syndromes makes attempts at diagnosis and treatment very difficult. The diagnostic gold standard is biopsy with histopathology/Immunhistochemistry. Getting the right diagnostic samples usually requires exploratory surgery or a postmortem examination. New research by Dr. Gary Whittaker at Cornell University may lead to a reliable diagnostic test in the future. The research involves getting the genomes of the 4 non-disease forming corona viruses and comparing them with the mutated FIP virus forms. Locating the differences may help in developing a very sensitive, simple diagnostic test. If a weakness in the virus can be found then new treatments can be developed. The bottomline: FIP sucks and cats die!

Spinel

If you like a variety of colors available in a gemstone you will really like spinel. There are red, violet, pink, blue, orange, and black spinels. Finding your favorite color could take you on a tour of the world. The best red, pink and orange spinels originate from the rich gem gravels of Burma’s Mogok Stone Tract. The best blue and violet spinels are found in Sri Lanka. Gem spinel is also found in Vietnam, the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan, and in Tanzania and Madagascar in Africa. Black spinel is mined in Thailand. Throughout history, spinel has been confused with ruby because red spinel is a rich, intense red similar to that of a red traffic signal. Frequently expensive rubies are substituted for by spinel in much the same way a diamond is substituted by cubic zirconia. Not to commit a fraud or theft but to prevent one. Spinel may take the place of a ruby that would have been displayed in public by an owner who is insecure about the rubies safety. Better to lose a $100,000 dollar spinel than a $1 million dollar ruby, don’t you agree?

THIS IS A HAMMERBy Samantha Mazzotta

Shingles Are Least of Roof’s Problems

Q: My dad is pretty stubborn about doing home repairs himself. A couple days ago, however, I found out that

his roof has some serious problems. He’s been patching up leaks in the roof by just slapping a couple of shingles over problem spots as they crop up. Yesterday he called and said when he tried to spot-shingle yet another leaky

section, his hand went right through the roof. When I went into the attic to check it out, I found that the sheath-

ing is mostly rotted. What are his options? He’s on a fixed income, and this repair looks expensive. -- Rick in

Portsmouth, N.H.

A: Unfortunately, it sounds like an expensive repair. The rotted sheathing will need to be removed and replaced, and if the damage is extensive, a complete roof replace-

ment may be needed. The first step is to contact a roof inspector or roofing

contractor to view the damage and to look for additional problems in the roof structure. While you’re waiting

for the inspection, protect the interior of the house from potential water damage while you and your dad figure this out. Working from the attic for safety, affix a lightweight sheet of plywood against the hole your dad accidentally punched in the roof, using screws rather than nails to try and hold the plywood against the weakened sheathing. Keep in mind that this is not a long-term fix, but a tem-

porary solution to keep rainwater out for a few days until stronger protection measures can be put in place.

Get a written report of the extent of damage from the inspector or contractor. If the contractor wants to repair

the roof, ask for a written estimate. It’s a good idea to call in two or three contractors and get written estimates from

each before deciding whom to hire.Paying for the repair is another hurdle. Check your dad’s

home insurance -- does it cover roof replacement, and under what circumstances? Also check local and state assistance programs for the elderly to see what, if any,

financial help or discounts are available. Some federal agencies offer assistance for home repairs. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, for example, has a program that provides loans or grants to rural homeown-ers with very low incomes. The Department of Energy

offers some funds under a program to help homeowners weatherize their houses.

HOME TIP: Inspect your roof regularly for minor dam-age and tackle torn shingles and small leaks as soon as possible to prevent more extensive damage from occur-

ring over time.

WHY RENT WHEN YOU CAN OWN

A big burly man visited the home of a couple who was known for helping the community with charitable causes. "Madam" the man said in a tearful and broken voice, "I wish to draw your attention to the terrible plight of a poor family in the neighborhood. The father has died, the mother is ill and the 9 children are hungry. They are about to be turned out into the cold, empty streets unless someone can pay their rent, the amount is $500."

"How terrible" exclaimed the wife of the couple, "But may I ask you who you are?"

The sympathetic visitor applied his handkerchief to his eyes and sobbed "I am the landlord."

Want to stop renting? Call me and I can help you buy a home!

marchers along the Fifth Avenue route. Close to three million spectators observe the parade, which does not allow automobiles or floats.

• Canada’s longest-running parade is in the city of Montreal, where it first took place in 1824..

• The three-color Irish flag – orange, green, and white – was created in 1848, and is symbolic of the country’s politics. The orange stands for the Irish Protestants, green for the Catholics, and white represents the hope that peace be reached between the two.

• Have you ever heard of the trifolium dubium? That’s the name given to the shamrock by botanists. The early Celts referred to the shamrock as the seamroy, and considered this three-leafed clover a sacred plant with mystical properties. Legend has it that St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to first-century Irish pagans. During the 17th century when the English began seizing Irish land and prohibiting the use of their native language and Catholic

religion, many Irish started wearing the shamrock as a symbol of pride in their heritage.

• The Irish word lobaircin means “small-bodied fellow,” and has been modified a bit to the English word “leprechaun.” These little imps date back to the early Celtic beliefs in fairies, those tiny men and women with magical powers, who used those powers for either good or evil. Leprechauns were seen as grumpy little men, whose duties were to mend the shoes of the other fairies. We’ve all heard of the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Folklore claims that the little men have great treasures stored in crocks, and use trickery to protect it from others. If a leprechaun is captured by a human, he has the magical power to grant three wishes in exchange for his release. In 1959, Walt Disney Studios released the film Darby O’Gill and the Little People, which gave us the image of cheerful and friendly leprechauns, but in Irish folklore, they are cantankerous and mischievous.

• Indiana’s University of Notre Dame is home to the Fighting Irish, a team that played its inaugural game in November of 1887. In 1918, Knute Rockne took over as head coach and his record of the highest winning percentage (.881) in football history, either college or professional, still stands. Notre Dame has produced the second largest number of players drafted into the NFL, the greatest number of Heisman Trophy winners, and ten former Irish have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Every home game has been sold out since 1966, with the exception of one Thanksgiving Day contest against the Air Force in 1973, when the students had gone home for the holiday.

Ask the Dentist

Q: Does Gum Disease Cause Heart Attacks?A: Yes…….and strokes, low birth weight babies. Recent research proves a definite link between gum disease, heart disease, stroke, and pre-term low birth weight babies.

Good oral health is more than just having an attractive smile; it can have a definite relationship to your overall health, lifestyle, and longevity. The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) reports that more than 90 percent of all systemic diseases can be manifest in abnormal oral health.

Q: How do I know if I have Gum Disease?A: Warning signs of gum disease include:

• Stinky breath• Puffy, red, sore gums that may bleed

when brushing or flossing• Loose teeth• Changes in the way the bite fits or

feels• Receding gums exposing the root

surfaces

Q: Is gum disease contagious?A: Yes! The bad bugs (“bacteria”) that cause gum disease are readily passed from one person to another. (Be sure to “think before you kiss”!)

Gum disease (Periodontal Disease) is an infection in the gums and bone supporting the teeth, caused by specific bacteria. These bacteria organize into a sticky, creamy, stinky substance (paque) that sticks tenaciously around the teeth and gums. Gum disease can advance for years without detection or pain. Damage to the supporting bone is irreversible.

The best cure is prevention before it happens or stopping gum disease in its tracks before major damage and tooth loss occur, and before you pass it to your “significant other”. See your dentist and dental hygienist and be sure to ask those important questions above – or call our office for a FREE Periodontal check-up and exam. Time for Gen-Xers to Put IRAs to Work If you’re a “Gen-Xer,” born between 1965 and 1980, you’ve still got many years to go until you retire. At this stage of your life, what can you do to help build resources for

the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned?

Besides having time on your side, you’ve got another key advantage in saving for retirement — specifically, you probably haven’t reached your peak earning years. This helps you in at least two ways. First, of course, it means you should be able to increase your retirement savings in the future. And second, it might mean you’re still eligible to contribute to one of the most effective retirement accounts available — the Roth IRA.

When you invest in a Roth IRA, your earnings are distributed tax free, provided you’ve had your account at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re at least 59½. For the 2013 tax year, you can put in up to $5,500 to a

Roth IRA; when you reach 50, you’ll also be able to make “catch-up” contribu-tions. (Currently, the catch-up limit is $1,000.)

However, the ability to make Roth IRA contributions is limited by income. For 2013, you can make the full contribution to a Roth IRA if you are single and your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) is less than $112,000. Above this amount, your contribution limit will be gradually reduced, and if your MAGI reaches $127,000, you won’t be able to contribute at all. If you’re married filing jointly, the lower limit is $178,000 and the cutoff amount is $188,000.

Of course, if you have to consider these income limits, you’re making a reason-ably good living, and you may well be on a career path that will take you to even greater earnings — which is why you should think about putting in as much as possible to a Roth IRA while you’re eligible.

If your earnings are already over the limit for the Roth IRA, you can still contrib-ute to a traditional IRA. Your contributions can grow tax deferred, which means your money can accumulate faster than it would on an account on which you paid taxes every single year. Taxes are due upon withdrawal, and withdrawals prior to age 59½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.

But what if your income level is such that you could contribute to either a Roth IRA or a traditional IRA? Which one should you choose?

There’s no “right” answer for everyone. On the one hand, the Roth’s tax-free distributions may be more attractive to you than the tax-deferred growth potential of a traditional IRA if you expect your tax rate to be higher in the future. However, depending on your income level and whether you have access to a 401(k) or other retirement plan at work, your traditional IRA contributions may be fully or par-tially tax-deductible. But these types of calculations are not easy, so before making the traditional-or-Roth choice, you’ll need to consult with your tax advisor.

¥ On March 27, 1905, fingerprint evidence is used for the first time to solve a British murder case. The fingerprint on a cash box was the only clue in the murder of Thomas and Ann Farrow, shopkeep-ers in South London.

¥ On March 29, 1929, President Herbert Hoover has a phone installed at his desk in the Oval Of-fice of the White House. It took a while to get the line to Hoover’s desk working correctly, and the president complained to aides when his son was unable to get through to the Oval Office phone from an outside line.

¥ On March 25, 1933, the newly commissioned USS Sequoia becomes the official presidential yacht. Before it was commissioned as the presi-dential yacht, the Department of Commerce used the Sequoia as a decoy to catch Prohibition law-breakers.

¥ On March 28, 1941, workers start clearing hundreds of acres of land near Ypsilanti, Mich., for the construction of the Ford Motor Company’s Willow Run plant, which will use Henry Ford’s mass-production technology to build B-24 bomber planes for World War II. Willow Run eventually employed more 42,000 people, and by 1944, the plant was producing one plane every hour.

¥ On March 26, 1950, ever on a witch-hunt, Sen. Joseph McCarthy charges Johns Hopkins Univer-sity Professor Owen Lattimore with being a top spy for the Soviet Union. Lattimore’s career was ruined, even though no evidence ever surfaced to support the charges.

¥ On March 31, 1968, in a televised speech to the nation, President Lyndon B. Johnson announces a partial halt of bombing missions over North Viet-nam and proposes peace talks. At the same time, he also stated that he was sending 13,500 more troops to Vietnam -- and that he would not seek nomination for another term as president.

¥ On March 30, 1981, President Ronald Reagan is shot in the chest outside a Washington, D.C., hotel by a deranged drifter named John Hinckley Jr. In an impressive feat for a 70-year-old man with a collapsed lung, Reagan walked into George Wash-ington University Hospital under his own power.
