TIDBITS® SAYS …
GIVE IT AWAY!by Kathy Wolfe
“To whom much is given, much will be required.” These words of wisdom were taken to heart by many people who were blessed fi nancially and intellectually. Follow along as Tidbits looks at the contributions of these generous philanthropists. • Marie Curie, winner of two Nobel Prizes and famous for
her radium research, refused to take out a patent for her process of making radium, believing its benefi ts belonged to the world. She stated that scientifi c work “must be done for itself, for the beauty of science” and for the “benefi t of humanity.”
• Fellow Nobel Prize winner German physicist Wilhelm Roentgen, who discovered X-rays in 1895, also refused to patent his scientifi c breakthrough, declining any fi nancial gain from his research. Although he did collect Nobel Prize money in 1901 for his achievement, (the very fi rst Nobel Prize in Physics), Roentgen donated all of it to a German university. He died in poverty.
• Similarly, English chemist John Walker, who invented the friction match in 1827, never patented his invention, believing that such an important tool should belong to the public. Walker did make his invention known to the public, and sold books of 50 matches for one shilling each at his Stockton, England pharmacy.

PHILANTHROPISTS (continued):• The name of Rockefeller is synonymous with
wealth, dating back to the 19th century when John D. Rockefeller and his brother founded Standard Oil. John began contributing to the needs of others at age 16 and it became a lifelong habit. After graduating from a Cleveland business school, he went to work in a local shipping fi rm as a low-level clerk. He diligently saved up to start a produce business, and with the advent of the Civil War, when the demand for his goods skyrocketed, he came out with a small fortune. With the success of Standard Oil, he became America’s fi rst billionaire, retiring at age 58 with $1.5 billion. The University of Chicago was founded with Rockefeller’s $80 million endowment, and New York City’s Rockefeller University was also established with his endowment. His donations to medical research led to the eradication of hookworm and yellow fever. The Philippines and China were recipients of his money to open medical universities, and America’s Johns Hopkins University received substantial donations as well. In all, John Rockefeller bestowed close to $550 million of his fortune on churches, medical foundations, universities, and centers for the arts.
• Bill Hewlitt and Dave Packard, founders of the giant computer and electronics company, have donated more than $300 million to Stanford University. Packard funded a children’s hospital with another $40 million and the Monterey, California Aquarium with an additional $40 million. Their business got its start in 1939 with an initial investment of $538. Working from Packard’s garage, the pair came up with an audio oscillator, a device for testing and synchronizing sound equipment. One of their fi rst customers was Walt Disney, who bought eight of the devices for use in the production of his animated classic Fantasia. Today, Hewlett-Packard has gross sales of about $120 billion annually and has over 330,000 employees.
• William K. Kellogg wasn’t just about Corn Flakes! When Kellogg founded the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company in 1906, the cereal he had developed was immediately successful. Within ten years, Kellogg had created a foundation to fund charities throughout southern Michigan. He was devoted to improving education and health care, especially for children. He established hospitals in rural areas and organized public health departments, and founded a school that allowed children with disabilities to learn alongside those without disabilities. In the 1940s, he expanded his charity to Latin America. Frequently heard to say, “Dollars do not create character,” Kellogg donated more than $66 million to worthy causes during his lifetime.
• In 1637, 29-year-old John Harvard and his new bride emigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony from their native England. They settled in Charlestown, where John was an assistant pastor at a local church and described as “a godly gentleman and a lover of learning.” The following year, the young preacher was stricken with tuberculosis and died. In an oral will spoken to his wife, Harvard bequeathed half of his fortune to a nearby college founded two years earlier. Upon receiving the rather substantial money that Harvard had inherited from his father, mother, and brother, along with Harvard’s extensive 320-volume scholar’s library, the college was renamed after its fi rst major benefactor. Harvard University remains the oldest institution of higher education in the United States.

Feline Quotes & Sayings: “Age is not a disease.”-Dr. James Richards-
Companion cats and dogs commonly have dental problems. Processed foods whether canned or dry have increased levels of carbohydrates which encourage the growth of bacteria and the formation of plaque. The next step is the deposition of tartar onto the teeth and under the gums. Bacteria and tartar alter the mouth‛s pH and then combine with food to cause gingivitis and periodontal disease. Having regular dental care is the only way to prevent tooth loss, pain and you will have a healthy companion pet. The number one cause of infections in the body is from dental infections releasing bacteria into the bloodstream. Dental care is very important in all species.
Common Sense Recommendations
Daily brushing of teeth in dogs is possible and recommended. Cats rarely will tolerate brushing of teeth. Pets rarely show dental pain!
Dental diets help cats clean their teeth and dogs also benefi t from dental diets. Not all dental diets work, so choose a quality product.
Canned diets usually have lower amounts of carbohydrates so feeding them will help decrease tartar build-up. Dry diets have fl our binders to form a dry kibble which is starch. Starch is sugar and tends to form more tartar.
Genetics play a role in whether your cat or dog will have a healthy mouth. Many pets will have teeth extracted just like humans. With today‛s diets cats and dogs do very well with no teeth – they gum their food and have a healthy mouth.
Never give ‘sugarless gum‛ to cats or dogs – Xylitol is a poison to pets!
Talk with your veterinarian about the need for dental care at your next visit. Healthy teeth go along with a healthy body.
Veterinarian offer “special promotions” that help you help your companion pet have a fresher mouth during Dental Month.

The only thing ugly about a chrome diop-side gem is its name. Chrome diopside? Whoever it was who thought up that name should be sent to live in a cheap costume jewelry manufacturing plant for 5 – 7 years without the possibility of parole! This is not a car polish or a social disease, for crying out loud, it’s a gem that features a rich green color and better yet, an incredibly low price. It may well be one of the most aord-able pure rich green gems on the market today! So if your check book is low and you need to impress your loved one…think chrome diopside. Ok, so there is one small drawback: Most chrome diopside gems are small. The larger rarer sizes become so rich in green that they are almost too dark. Ok, so there is yet another small drawback: they are relatively soft, with a hardness of only 5.5. Best you wear them as earrings or as a pendant rather than a ring. But remember the good news: chrome diopside bears a rich green color and is usually available at an aordable price.

PHILANTRHOPISTS (continued):• Oprah Winfrey’s passion is education and she has
given away hundreds of millions to educational causes. Born in poverty to a single mother, Winfrey has worked her way up in the media world, becoming a billionaire in the early 2000s. She founded Oprah’s Angel Network in 1998, devoted to charitable causes, an organization that has donated more than $80 million around the world. Sixty schools in 13 countries have been established, along with women’s shelters, youth centers, and scholarships. In 2007, she created the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, a female boarding school in South Africa, a $40 million endeavor to provide education and leadership opportunities for girls in a country where only 14% of the black population graduates from high school.
• Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has joined forces with fellow billionaire Warren Buffet to form a campaign known as The Giving Pledge. Gates’ foundation that he established with wife Melinda focuses on health and world development and U.S. education. They’ve given about $28 billion to their foundation.

How to Avoid Two of the Most Common Late Spring Turfgrass DiseasesThe late spring season brings about two common turf grass diseases. Here are a few tips on how to avoid trouble on your lawn so that you can enjoy a lush, green yard this year.
As the weather transitions from those cooler spring days to more con-sistently warmer days with slightly cooler nights, we begin to see a few telltale signs of lawn disease.
One of the most common dis-eases seen in the second half of spring is leaf blight. Unfortunately, this disease is also one of the most diffi cult to manage, mainly because it happens so quickly and cre-ates large, discolored patches on the lawn that resemble chemical burn.
Oftentimes, leaf blight may impact one person’s lawn but not their immediate neighbor’s, simply due to cultural issues like a dull mower blade. Poor cultural care of a lawn can greatly infl uence the spread of leaf blight or the severity of it from one lawn to another.
Leaf blight enters the grass plants after evening mowing followed by excessive night watering. In heavily infested areas, the fungus damages the lawn in circular patches that often form large bleached areas. Closer inspection of the plant reveals individual leaves dying from the tips down.
Lawns react very similarly to a house plant when they become infected with disease. The fi rst reaction of the plant is to drop the diseased leaf before the disease can enter the main part of the plant. Turf is similar in that it will shed the leaf by thinning out the lawn. When conditions improve, it will regrow the leaf and fi ll back in. Sometimes this can take weeks or even longer depending on weather patterns.
The second disease we see at this time of year is red thread. This disease is more active with rainy spring weather and lower light levels. The most noticeable symptoms of Red Thread are thread-like strands or webby areas of a coral pink to deep red color on the tips of brown grass blades. The strands can protrude
up to ½ inch up from the blade and are easily seen, hence the name “red thread.” While red thread typically attacks fi ne fescue lawns, it can be seen in bluegrass as well. As the disease spreads, it will leave behind unsightly patches all over the lawn.
So what is the best treatment available to prevent these two diseases from developing? The most important thing is to ensure you have a sharp mower blade, as this will help the grass heal quickly before the disease has a chance to enter the leaf blade and infect the turf grass.
It is also critical to avoid overwatering the lawn at this time of year, as many homeowners with irrigation systems will have them on and watering when it may not be required. Too much water is consistently an issue that contributes to late spring diseases. Remember to avoid evening watering (morning watering is best) and do not cut the lawn at night or when the grass is wet.
Lastly, a healthy, well maintained lawn is the best defense against turf grass disease. Regular fertilization will help keep your lawn strong and thick. Although out of your control, improved weather conditions will also greatly assist in the lawn recovering from leaf disease typically. Once summer arrives, these diseases will likely disappear...only to leave others more suited for the heat, such as dollar spot, in their wake.

One Sunday morning, a mother went in to wake her son and tell him it was time to get ready for church, to which he replied, "I'm not going."
"Why not?" she asked.
I'll give you two good reasons," he said. (1), they don't like me, and (2), I don't like them."
His mother replied, "I'll give you two good reasons why you SHOULD go to church: (1) You're 59 years old, and (2) you're the pastor!"***************************************** The Picnic A Rabbi and a Catholic Priest met at the town's annual 4th of July picnic. Old friends, they began their usual banter. "This baked ham is really delicious," the priest teased the rabbi. "You really ought to try it. I know it's against your religion, but I can't understand why such a wonderful food should be forbidden! You don't know what you're missing. You just haven't lived until you've tried Mrs. Hall's prized Virginia Baked Ham. Tell me, Rabbi, when are you going to break down and try it?"
The rabbi looked at the priest with a big grin, and said, "At your wedding."*****************************************The Usher An elderly woman walked into the local country church. The friendly usher greeted her at the door and helped her up the fl ight of steps. "Where would you like to sit?" he asked politely.
"The front row, please," she answered.
"You really don't want to do that," the usher said. "The pastor is really boring."
"Do you happen to know who I am?" the woman inquired.
"No," he said.
"I'm the pastor's mother," she replied indignantly.
"Do you know who I am?" he asked.
"No," she said.
"Good," he answered.*****************************************Show and Tell A kindergarten teacher gave her class a "show and tell" assignment. Each student was instructed to bring in an ob-ject that represented their religion to share with the class.
The fi rst student got up in front of the class and said, "My name is Benjamin and I am Jewish and this is a Star of David."
The second student got up in front of the class and said, "My name is Mary. I'm a Catholic and this is a Rosary."
The third student got in up front of the class and said, "My name is Tommy. I am Methodist, and this is a casserole."***************************************** The Best Way To Pray A priest, a minister and a guru sat discussing the best positions for prayer, while a telephone repairman worked nearby. "Kneeling is defi nitely the best way to pray," the priest said.
"No," said the minister. "I get the best results standing with my hands outstretched to Heaven."
"You're both wrong," the guru said. "The most effective prayer position is lying down on the fl oor."
The repairman could contain himself no longer. "Hey, fel-las," he interrupted. "The best prayin' I ever did was when I was hangin' upside down from a telephone pole."
