It’s estimated that more than two billion people – nearly one-third of the world’s population – have heard various actors utter those words as the fictional spy introduced himself in 23 different films. This week, Tidbits focuses on one of our favorite characters, his creator, and those who have played him. London-born Ian Fleming published his first James Bond novel Casino Royale in 1953. Fleming wrote the book in two months at his Jamaican vacation home. It was met with positive reviews and sold out its first and second month. Fleming himself had worked for British Naval Intelligence during World War II and was well- acquainted with the world of espionage, an experience he used to shape his novels. He based the character of Bond’s boss “M” after his own superior in the Navy, Admiral Sir John Godfrey. Fleming named his spy James Bond after a noted ornithologist, Dr. James Bond, who had written a book on birdwatching that Fleming had on hand. Fleming said, “I wanted the simplest, dullest, plainest-sounding name I could think of. James Bond seemed perfect.” The number 007 was the bus route Fleming frequently used between London and Canterbury. turn the page for more! Bond. James Bond. JAMES BOND (continued):• The fi ctional Bond’s parents were a Scots gentleman Andrew Bond, employed by a weapons company, and a Swiss woman named Monique Delacroix. When his parents died when James was 11, he was sent to live with an aunt, was enrolled at Eton, and was recruited into the Royal Navy. (Fleming also attended Eton and was involved in naval intelligence). • Fleming wrote a Bond novel every year until his death in 1964, a total of 12. Since then, seven other authors have continued the series, including John Gardner who penned GoldenEye, which became the 17th Bond fi lm. Fleming gave the name GoldenEye to his Jamaican vacation retreat which overlooked the Caribbean, after a World War II military mission he had developed in the event the Nazis invaded Spain. After Fleming’s death, the estate was sold to Bob Marley. • The 1958 novel Dr. No came to the big screen in 1962, the fi rst of 23 Eon Productions “offi cial” James Bond fi lms. A casting contest was held to fi nd the perfect James Bond, seeking a man age 28 to 35, about 6 feet tall (1.8 m), with dark hair, and a British accent. Sean Connery landed the role, edging out Cary Grant and Richard Burton. Dr. No was the only offi cial Bond fi lm seen by Ian Fleming before his death in 1964. • Between 1962 and 1967, Sean Connery starred as James Bond four more times in From Russia with Love, Goldfi nger, Thunderball, and You Only Live Twice before retiring from the role. Timothy Dalton was strongly considered as his replacement, but declined, saying that age 25, he was too young for the role. Adam West (Batman) was offered the part, but said no, believing that Bond should be a British actor. • In 1969, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was released, starring a 30-year-old Australian former used car salesman, George Lazenby. Lazenby’s acting experience was almost non-existent, having most recently appeared in a TV commercial for chocolate bars. For his screen test, he purchased a custom-made suit ordered by Connery, who had failed to pick it up at the tailor’s. He added a Rolex watch and went to Connery’s barber to add to his look. It was Lazenby’s only Bond fi lm.

• The studio was advised to bring back Sean Connery, no matter what the cost, and in 1971, Connery returned in Diamonds Are Forever, for a $1.25 million salary and 12.5% of the profi ts. He donated the entire base salary to a Scottish education charity. This would be the last Bond fi lm Connery made for Eon Productions, although he starred in a non-Eon move, Never Say Never Again in 1983.

• Connery wore a toupee in all of his Bond fi lms. During the fi lming of a fi ght scene in Diamonds Are Forever, Connery’s opponent accidentally pulled off the toupee.

• In 1973, Roger Moore stepped into the role for Live and Let Die, a Bond with a more comical air about him. Moore is the current record holder for the most Bond fi lms with seven, including The Man with the Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me, and For Your Eyes Only. His fi nal Bond fi lm was 1985’s A View To Kill, when he was 58 years old, making him also the oldest James Bond actor. With all the fi rearms used on the movie set, Moore had to overcome his hoplophobia, the fear of weapons, the result of a childhood accident when he was shot in the leg by his brother with an air rifl e.

Doctor Google Knows Everything!

The internet is an amazing source of information and can either solve problems or make things worse. Whenever you do a medical search try to fi nd medical peer re viewed sites that are updated constantly. The answer usually can be found on the internet . . . but which answer is right?

There is a lot of junk and pseudo-science that seems plausible but is ‘dead’ wrong. Be sure to review many sites to get a general consensus before making a decision. The doctors at Cat Specialist use searches on specifi c medical sites to fi nd new treatments, validate current treatment plans or consult with colleagues on your cat’s medical condition.

The educational value of the internet is amazing if it is used right. Many courses, case consultations, research topics, new procedures and almost any area of curiosity can be searched on the internet.

Currently the doctors at Cat Specialist are looking into a novel treatment to resolve the secondary signs in diabetes. A multi-species search of materials has provided an amazing amount of materials and many new ideas.

So, as a doctor, I encourage my client to use the internet wisely. Many of the articles they search are valid but some are not. Don’t be afraid to ask our medical staff questions because we want the very best health care for your cat.

Remember, Dr. Google knows everything but it cannot tell right from wrong!

Coral

Coral gemstones come from some of the most beautiful miracles of Nature – the reefs, banks and atolls found in a variety of places around the world. Specially trained divers go into the ocean depths between three and 300 meters to carefully harvest coral. Once brought up the branches are cleaned, sorted and processed using saws, knives, les or drills. It is very seldom cut or ground on a wheel. In its raw form coral has a matt nish, but once it is polished it has a beautiful shine that looks marvelous in a variety of jewelry settings. The fewer the cracks, blotches, striations and holes, the higher the quality and the higher the price. Like pearls, corals are organic and are closely related chemically; both consist of more than 90 percent calcium carbonate. Corals come in a variety of colors: red, white, blue, brown and black. The most popular are the red hues of pale pink and salmon. Corals have a hardness of only 3.5 which makes them softer than any other gemstone material. If you wear a coral be careful with cosmetics, hot water or bright light. Keep your coral pieces clean with a soft, damp towel being careful not to scratch the surface.

Extend your outdoor living season

Nice weather this week has been a reminder that fall can be glorious in Colorado. There are many great days ahead to enjoy outdoor living even when there's a chill in the air.

The key to extending outdoor enjoyment beyond the balmy days of summer is as simple as using the ele-ments of fi re and light.

Start a fi re!Staying warm on a chilling fall afternoon is as easy as striking a match in a wood-burning fi re pit. A cozy fi re brings people together, prolongs a good conversation and adds ambiance to a glass of wine or a bottle of beer. For kids and teens, it's one more campfi re and round of s'mores to enjoy.

Plus, the old-fashioned fi re pit is a good way to test drive whether you want a more permanent fi xture with less maintenance and no smoke. Out-of-the-box propane models can be embellished to look like custom work that matches other outdoor features in your yard. Or you can create a permanent feature encircled in stone or even a standing fi replace complete with a hearth and chimney. However you make it happen, taking the chill off the air makes the outdoors livable well into the fall.

Turn on the lightsThe sun is setting earlier and it will soon be time to turn the clocks back. Since no one likes moving around or sitting in the dark, the darkness alone chases us indoors. On the other hand, lighting up pathways and outdoor living areas keeps the outdoors inviting.

There are several benefi ts to outdoor lighting, especially LED lighting:It is relatively easy to install any time of yearIt uses minimal power andIt is low maintenance because bulb replacements are few and far between. Outdoor lighting also ups the safety factor around your home.

Adding warmth and light are both strategic outdoor projects to tackle in the off-season. If you decide more fi re and light are in order, these can be fast-track fall upgrades that won't interfere with your landscape during the growing season.

This weekend, get outside to kick through the leaves, light a fi re and keep enjoying the outdoor season as long as you can.

Back to School Mouthguards ??

Q. What is a Mouthguard?A. A mouthguard is a fl exible appliance worn in athletic and recreational activities to protect teeth from injuryQ. Why should I wear a mouthguard? A. Why NOT? According to the Academy of General Dentistry, “A mouthguard can prevent serious injuries such as broken teeth, jaw fractures, cerebral hemorrhage and neck injuries by helping to avoid situations where the lower jaw gets jammed into the upper jaw. Mouthguards are eff ective in moving soft tissue in the oral cavity away from the teeth, preventing laceration and bruising of the lips and cheeks, especially for those who wear orthodontic appliances. They may also reduce the severity and incidence of concussions”. A mouthguard can protect and conserve “what’s in your wallet” too.

Q. Are “Back to School Mouthguards” important? Really important?A. Yes! Kids will be heading back to school very soon, and many will end up in various

contact sports. According to the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation (NYSSF), every year there are 15 million dental injuries and 5 million teeth are lost to injuries. According to the American Dental Association, mouthguards help prevent over 200,000 high-school and college athletes from getting these injuries.

Statistics from the NYSSF indicate that losing a single tooth can cost $10,000 to $20,000 over one’s lifetime to replace and restore that tooth!

Q. Why don’t more students wear a mouthguard? A. Students may decide not to wear a mouthguard for a number of reasons: Not all schools

Require wearing a mouthguard while participating in contact sports. Some that don’t fi t properly, or are too big, can impair breathing (or feel like it). Cost may be a

factor. Some kids just may “forget” to put their mouthguard in.

Athletes that wear properly fi tted mouthguards typically fi nd them to be comfortable, resistant to tearing, and durable. One study showed that a custom-made “double layered” mouthguard “off ers double defenses; the extra layers did not reduce comfort or wearability. These double layered materials are what the pros wear. Even the least expensive mouthguard is better than none. It’s true that some protect better than others, but most types help prevent injuries to the teeth, lips, cheek, and tongue.
