South of Forrer Boulevard, a unique phenomenon was develop- ing. Sears kit homes were being purchased and erected in large numbers stretching from Aberdeen Avenue all the way south to Triangle Avenue which gave way to farmland further south from there at the time. Sears kit homes were popular because they were inexpensive (a typical Sears kit home cost an average of $750) and they were immediately available for two reasons. First, downtown Dayton had a Sears home factory where Hauer Music exists today on South Jefferson Street. Secondly, all Sears kit homes were shipped by rail and the train line that ran along parallel to what is Acorn Drive was a perfect supply line for Sears homes all along the way through Oakwood, Kettering, Bellbrook and beyond. Fifteen years ago, there were only two “officially identified” Sears homes located in Oakwood. Today, with the help of archi- tectural historians C. William Hager, Mark Risley and myself, over 117 homes and 32 different models have so-far been identi- fied as Sears homes in Oakwood. And that is not even close to get- ting a final tally. It is likely that Oakwood might be in the running Sears from page 8 See Sears on page 10 Sears Elsmore model home in Oakwood.
