2013 TERM DATES
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents
What a busy term for the School! Apart from the all-important academic programme, we have
enjoyed key events such as Founders' Day, Parent - Teacher evenings, House Days, Book Week,
the Drama Production, the PYP Exhibition, the Art Exhibition, the ASC Piano Competition, Learning
Journeys, Primary Discos, Year 11 Dinner Dance, Cross-Country and Athletics Carnivals. Thank
you for your support, it means a lot to your children and the staff. Much has been accomplished
this term.
THANK YOU TO THE P&F
Our P&F Committee led by President Mrs Del Nash continues to make a strong contribution to our
school community. Funds collected from the P&F Levy this year have now been allocated. The
Committee is always mindful of allocating funds to items requested by staff that benefit the
broad range of students across the ELC, Primary and Secondary years. A special pastoral
initiative funded this term was the speaker Amy Coombe who addressed female students, all
staff and interested parents on a range of issues concerning teenage girls. Speaking from her
personal experience, Ms Coombe was well-received. The students, in particular, found her
informative and reassuring.
Thank you to all parents who have paid their P&F Levy. It is an important resource directed to
areas of need in the School and is much appreciated.
STAFF MATTERS
We thank Mrs Lisa Bissell (Food and Textiles) who completes her contract this term and wish Mrs
Betty Devenish (Education Assistant) a well-deserved and relaxing period of Long Service Leave
for Term 4. Our good wishes are also extended to Mrs Heidi Crawford (Primary Japanese) and
Mrs Amanda Whiteford (Year 5) who commence 12 months Maternity Leave at the end of term.
STUDENT MATTERS
As our Leavers near the end of their time at John Wollaston, we wish them every success in the
final phase of their schooling. To those writing their Mock Examinations in the next few days it is a
stressful time. As always, our good wishes go to all involved. I look forward to leading the School's
celebrations for the Year 12s early next term.
Our 2013 Prefects have completed their duties and were duly acknowledged at the Secondary
assembly this week. The incoming Prefects were announced to the School (refer Mrs Twining’s
article). We wish them well in their new roles.
STUDENT WITHDRAWALS DECEMBER 2013
To assist the School’s planning for 2014, please contact the Registrar should you be considering
withdrawing your child at the end of the year. We understand that confirmation of withdrawal is
often affected by different timelines in other educational institutions or the workplace. In some
cases applicants aren’t notified until the Christmas holidays if they are successful. Final
confirmation of withdrawal can come to the School at that stage. In the interim, early contact
with us would be greatly appreciated. It will also prevent you from incurring a fee penalty for not
giving the required term’s notice of withdrawal of a child from the School.
With best wishes for an enjoyable holiday break.

PRINCIPAL
PRIMARY
The events held in the Primary School over the past few weeks are
an indication of the depth and variety of programmes we offer
here at John Wollaston. The Year 6 Exhibition, held on Thursday
September 5, is a shining example of this. As the culmination of
the Primary Years Programme, this was a clear demonstration of
the International Baccalaureate emphasis on lifelong learning.
The collective self-motivation and determination displayed
through the inquiry process is indicative of a student cohort who
are becoming principled and caring global citizens.
The Exhibition essentially showcases an in-depth, collaborative
inquiry that is characterised by student independence and
responsibility for their own learning. The Central Idea for the
Exhibition was ‘Passions and Interests Can Inspire People To Take
Action’ and the application of the research around this idea led
to the actions undertaken by all students involved.
The Year 6 teachers, Mrs Louise Bristow and Mr Glynn Crawcour,
provided the support and expert assistance required to facilitate
the Exhibition. Many members of staff from the whole school
mentored the Year 6 students throughout this process; supporting,
challenging and guiding them on their journey. This engagement
across the School adds value to a sense of staff cohesion and
harmony.
The Year 6 Exhibition assembly, prior to the display of work,
enabled students to explain the focus of their inquiries. The level
of confidence displayed by the cohort was most pleasing and
indicative of sound preparation and thorough content
knowledge.
Mrs Fiona Currey, our PYP Coordinator and Assistant Deputy Head
of Primary, provided sound direction and leadership for the
Exhibition and should be commended for her efforts.
Our recent Inter-House Athletics Carnival was an excellent
example of resilience and perseverance on display from staff
and students, due to the challenging weather conditions and the
damp state of the ovals. This was a most successful event, a
credit to all staff and a determined student population. Thank
you to Ms Mel Fowler for organising the event and a particular
thank you to the parents who provided such valuable support on
the day.
The opening of the Art Exhibition last Wednesday provided the
opportunity to showcase the vibrant and creative art works
produced by students across the School. The Primary Art
Specialist, Mrs Jeanette Lyons, is very proud of the quality of work
on display. We are for tunate to have such
passionate and dedicated art specialists in our school.
Last Monday, Ms Kate Howell and the Debating Club hosted
students from Presbyterian Ladies’ College for a second round of
debating. As this was only the second time we have competed,
the collective performance of our team was most pleasing. The
improvement from the first debate was significant and many of
our students received awards. Thank you to Ms Howell for
organising this new initiative in our school.
As the term draws to a close, my personal thanks to all students,
staff and parents for making me feel so welcome in my new role
at John Wollaston. We have many great things to build on and I
am grateful for your support and understanding. I hope you all
have a wonderful holiday and I look forward to my second
school term.
WAYNE REVITT
HEAD OF PRIMARY
CLUBS
Clubs have come to an end for another year and we can reflect
on what has been a very popular and successful co-curricular
programme. Some of the highlights have been the entries into
the Film Festival from our budding directors, the skill and self
control shown during Martial Arts, the debating team that has
grown from strength to strength, the dancers who were keen to
show off their new routine and the students that worked hard to
make items to send off to children in Manila. It just shows what a
wide variety of activities the children can participate in and
provides them with the opportunity to further develop their
interests and passions.
UNIFORM
Term 4 will hopefully bring a sunny change as we move into our
summer uniform. I’m sure the students are excited about not
having an itchy, scratchy tie around their neck or having to do
up the dreaded top button! The School hat is also part of the
uniform. In Terms 1 and 4 students need to wear their hat to and
from school each day. Could I please ask for your assistance in
reminding your child to put their hat on in the morning when
walking in to School. Thank you.
Wishing you all a safe, happy and relaxing holiday and I look
forward to seeing everyone back ready for the excitement of
Term 4.
FIONA SHAND
DEPUTY HEAD OF PRIMARY
FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPALS
As I write this article our Year 12 students are preparing to depart for their Valedictory rehearsal at Christ Church Grammar School, a
very real reminder of how close we are to the end of another academic year for our Year 12 students.
Some of these students will be completing their WACE practical examinations during the first week of the holidays before returning to
sit the examinations in the second week of the holidays. Please spare a thought for these students during this stressful time.
Congratulations go to these Year 12 students who have been selected by staff for the following school nominated university awards:

THE LATEST INTERNET SITES TO BE WARY OF ACCORDING TO ‘YOUR KIDS ONLINE’
Omegal.com – This is a video chat site where one can randomly chat with a stranger via video. This site is of concern
because if gone unmonitored, teens are exposed to all sorts of people and strange requests. The site has a screen capture
function which can take images to be easily used for all sorts of purposes.
Chatroulette.com – similar to Omegal.com.
Ask.fm – this has been around a while but teens are still being caught out.

CUSTOM-MADE
Some people would say that there is nothing quite like having something custom-made. There are a
number of television programmes that are currently running where the theme is precisely that – items
being custom made, repaired or restored in such a way that they are one of a kind. They are
designed to be exactly what the owner would like them to be. In other cases, the scope of the
project is left up to the designer or creator. In these cases, the product often turns out better than the
owner could have imagined in their wildest dreams. If I were to get an item of clothing custom
made, it would be fitted to my uniqueness, crafted solely for me.
Now reflect on this; the Bible suggests that each of us has been custom-made by God. In other
words, YOU have been custom-made by God, and your days were ordained before time into
being. Psalm 139 tells us that:
13 … it was you (God) who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works;that I know very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all the days that were formed for me,when none of them as
yet existed. (NRSV)
God has placed all the parts of our lives in order. He's got our whole life in His hands. This means that we can stop trying to be
somebody else and be satisfied with the unique person God made us to be.
You are custom-made! When we live in that realisation, we can be relaxed and content in what and who we are. When we walk in
God's purpose for our life, it can be the greatest adventure of our life because it could end up being beyond our wildest dreams!
May God bless you in that adventure.
