Rheem Integrated HVAC & WaterHeating System Powered by TanklessTechnology First of its Kind from a

Single ManufacturerRheem recently intro-

duced its new IntegratedHVAC & Water Heating Sys-tem Powered by TanklessTechnology, a product thatoffers home heating and hotwater from a single source. When combined with Rheem

cooling equipment, the sys-tem offers complete air andwater home comfort. TheRheem Integrated HVAC &Water Heating System is thefirst of its kind to be de-signed, built, and warrantedby a single manufacturer,

ensuring seamless productintegration that can createone of the most efficienthome comfort systems pos-sible.

"As the only manufac-turer of both HVAC and wa-ter heating solutions,Rheem is the first companyto develop a truly integratedHVAC and water heatingsystem, built by one manu-facturer, designed to pro-vide complete whole-homeair and water comfort," saidRheem CEO JR Jones."While other companiesmay produce one portion ofan integrated system offer-ing, the Rheem IntegratedHVAC & Water Heating Sys-tem is the first to use prod-ucts designed to work spe-cifically with each other.

This innovative break-through product providesmultiple benefits forhomeowners and tremen-dous selling advantages forHVAC and plumbing con-tractors."

The heart of the Inte-grated HVAC & Water Heat-ing System is Rheemtankless technology, whichin this new application notonly fulfills hot water needs, but also provides heating tothe entire home. When aRheem tankless waterheater is matched with aRheem hydronic air handler, hot water is circulatedthrough the hydronic airhandler to provide warmthand is then re-circulatedback to the tankless waterheater to ensure that nowater is wasted. This pairingof products provides a soft, comfortable heat to thehome while maintaining

comfortable humidity levelsregardless of the climate.

The Integrated HVAC &Water Heating System alsooffers a unique installationbenefit for contractors bycutting the number of gasappliances installed in ahome comfort system inhalf. Rather than runningseparate gas lines and ventsystems for both the waterheater and furnace, con-tractors only need one gasline and one vent system.

Tankless water heaters, when appropriately sized, are capable of providing ahome with continuous, effi-cient hot water, making thenew integrated comfort sys-tem a highly efficient prod-uct with low operating costs.Featuring the industry's bestminimum flow rate, Rheemtankless water heaters offernew burner technology and

and Sanitation Is a HumanRight, UN Declares By avote of 122 in favor andnone against, the UN Gen-eral Assembly adopted aresolution introduced by Bo-livia that calls on countriesand international organiza-tions to provide financial re-sources, build capacity, andtransfer technology, particu-larly to developing countries,to help provide safe, clean, accessible, and affordabledrinking water and sanitationfor all people. The

United States delegationabstained from voting due toconcerns that the text couldundermine the current workof the Human Rights Coun-cil because it described theright to water and sanitationin a way not reflected in ex-isting international law. Even Big Cities FaceWater and Sanitation Prob-lems In Jakarta, the capitaland largest city of Indonesia, less than 50 percent of thecity’s 9 million citizens havewater on tap, and only 3 per-cent of the city’s homeshave proper sewage sys-tems, according to an ar-ticle in Eco-Business.com.Most citizens must utilizecommunity wells for water, and often in poor neighbor-hoods a “water mafia” con-trols the communal tank andcharges residents two tothree times the normal costto draw water from it. Unfor-tunately, the government isnot allowing piped water sys-tems to many neighbor-hoods because residentsare living on the landillegally.

VP Technicalvendor. I guess you couldsay that’s one of the perksof being VP Technical. Ifyou’re like me, you prefer tohear presentations on topicsthat are relevant to the typeof projects that you typicallywork on. This means that itmay not be relevant tosomeone else who workson different types ofprojects. As you know, someone who works prima-rily on industrial projectsmay not have the same in-

formation needs as some-one else who works prima-rily on commercial or resi-dential type projects. Thisbrings me to the point I wantto make.

This is your chapter andyour opportunity to have in-put into the type of informa-tion you receives. As weenter into this new chapterseason, and you listen to thevarious topics presented, bethinking about what you maylike to hear as a presenta-tion topic for the 2011-2012chapter season and let meknow. That way we can

have a diversity of topicswhich would include topicsrelevant to the type ofprojects you typically workon.

With that said, I’m happyto be able to say that goinginto this chapter year, wealready have a full line up ofspeakers for the comingseason. Starting on Sep-tember 7 with Greg Wilsonwith A.O. Smith, he will bespeaking to us about Air toWater/Water to Water heatpump water heaters. Thisconcept is fairly new andhas been gaining in popular-

ity lately with all the push forhigher efficiency. I’m lookingforward to hearing aboutwhere this application couldbest be put to use as well aswhat are some of the prosand cons of this technology.I for one am curious to knowif this would be a good ap-plication for residential useor if it should it be limited tosmall commercial applica-tions. It never hurts to beable to impress a client byoffering them an option ofthe latest technology if theirbuilding would benefit by it.I invite all of you to come to

the meeting to hear whatGreg has to say and possi-bly learn about somethingyou might be able to specify,or at least offer, on a futureproject.

As an added incentive foryou to attend our meetings,I have made an effort to in-form our speakers that wewant to be able to claimCEU’s/PDH’s for these ses-sions. What that means isthat the speaking sessionmust be 50 minutes mini-mum (one contact hour isdefined as 50 minutes of in-struction) and not be of aproprietary nature. The unitsfall under the category

“Additional Educationand Professional Develop-ment Programs”. These aredefined as efforts under-taken to advance, broaden, and enhance theindiv idual ’s technicalknowledge and job skills inengineering. These activi-ties typically do not offerCEU’s or PDH’s and in-clude company or otherorganization sponsorednon-proprietary, in-housetraining sessions and engi-neering related educationand professional develop-ment programs offered atlocal, state, regional or na-tional society or associa-tion meetings and specialevents. For those of youwho need the hours tomaintain your CPD status, you can earn three-quar-ters (0.75) RecertificationUnit per contact hour. Nopartial credit is earned fora presentation lasting lessthan 50 minutes and youmay only claim a maximumof 12 units from this cat-egory in a given 2 year cer-tification period.

What that means for youis that, assuming we have 9meetings per season over a2 year period and eachmeeting has a 50 minutesession, you can potentiallyearn up to 13.5 units ofcredit.

As noted above you canonly claim 12 of those unitsunder this category. Ofcourse that’s a best casescenario and there’s alwaysthe possibility that a speakermay cancel or not haveenough material to last 50minutes, but you get thepoint. You can potentiallyearn up to a full years worthof CPD recertification unitssimply by attending ourchapter meetings. I thinkthat’s a good deal and youget a vendor paid meal to gowith it.

Hope to see all of you atour upcoming chaptermeeting.

Noritz Extends 12-Year/6,500-HourWarranty To Tankless Water Heaters in

Controlled Recirculation Systems

Rheem

Tankless water heatermanufacturer Noritz Americarecently extended its 12-year/6,500-hour warranty to residen-tial models used with controlledrecirculation systems that de-liver hot water more quickly tothe tap. The extension appliesto all Noritz residential tanklesswater heater products that fea-ture the company’s durable,commercial-grade heat ex-changer. Included are the newNR83-DVC concentric tanklesswater heater, which made its de-but this month, as well as theNR98, NRC111 and NR111.

“Twelve years typically trans-lates into roughly 1.5 hours ofwater heater combustion perday,” explains Bob Hitchner,Senior Vice President - Sales,Marketing & Business Develop-ment for Noritz. “A residentialsystem that circulates warmwater for a couple of hours inthe morning and another coupleof hours in the evening shouldmake it for the full 12 years.”

To qualify for protection un-der the new residential recircu-lation warranty, a Noritz tanklesswater heater must meet the fol-lowing key stipulations:

-The unit must have been

installed on or after September1, 2010, and equipped with acontrolled recirculation pumpsystem that has been installedin accordance with the NoritzInstallation Manual.

-Water heater operationaltime must not exceed 12 years,or 6,500 hours, whichevercomes first. (Note: Operationalhours are the hours of actualusage, as counted and storedin the water heater controller.)

-The recirculation pumpmust be controlled by anaquastat, which activates thepump when the water tempera-ture falls below a minimum setpoint and deactivates it whenthe water temperature reachesthe maximum set point.

Noritz also strongly recom-mends the usage of demand-type timers and sensors to con-fine pump activation to peakusage periods, further reducingthe load on the water heater.

“We love the luxury andwater savings that a well-de-signed recirculation systemcan deliver,” says Hitchner. “Butwe also want homeowners andcontractors to use commonsense when designing suchsystems.”

As Hitchner notes, mosthomes need hot water in thebedroom wing between six andeight o’clock in the morning andeight to eleven o’clock at night.Under these circumstances, the recirculation loop may notbe needed for the in-betweentimes; or at least the minimumset point in the loop can be low-ered.

Why extend the warranty?Noritz residential tankless mod-els used in controlled

recirculation systems werepreviously excluded from the12-year warranty because ofthe heavy demands such sys-tems impose on a water heater, particularly its heat exchanger. If hot water is in constant circu-lation – to be readily availableat the tap or shower – the wa-ter heater is operating 24/7 aswell.

“We made the decision toextend the warranty after exten-sively testing our commercial-grade heat exchangers,” saysHitchner. “We clearly demon-strated to ourselves that Noritzcommercial heat exchangerscould withstand the additionaloperational time of a recircula-tion application.”

Begun in 2008, the tests ref-erenced by Hitchner spanned18 months and involved side-by-side tests of three tanklesswater heater models: a NoritzNR98-SV and two rival makesand models. To determine theeffects of hard water on eachunit’s heat exchanger, the wa-ter heaters were supplied withuntreated city water at a hard-ness level between 13 and 15grains per gallon. The units werecycled on and off around theclock, day after day, until failureof the heat exchanger. The twocompetitive models failed after

combustion lives of approxi-mately 1,200 and 2,760 hours.The Noritz NR98-SV with itscommercial-

grade heat exchangerlasted 6,700 hours before fail-ing.

Based on these results,Noritz calculated the followinglife expectancies for the threetested water heaters:SIMULATED RESIDENTIALLIFE IN YEARSAVERAGE USAGE (1 HR PERDAY)Competitor A3.3Competitor B7.6NORITZ NR98-SV18.4HEAVY USAGE (2 HR PERDAY)Competitor A1.6Competitor B3.8NORITZ NR98-SV9.2LIFE EXPECTANCY VS.NORITZ (AVE.)Competitor AAbout 60% lessCompetitor BAbout 80% lessNORITZ NR98-SVn/a

TEST PROTOCOL: To esti-mate product lifespan (inyears), Noritz (1) set the tem-perature for both units to 140degrees Fahrenheit, (2) sup-plied both units with untreatedcity water with hardness levelsbetween 13 grains per gallon(gpg) and 15 gpg, and (3)cycled the water on/off 24 hoursa day during the test until a leakin each unit's heat exchangerwas detected. The estimatedlifespan (in years) of the heatexchanger was calculated asfollows: Hours of combustion foreach product divided by 365.(This calculation is based onaverage residential water us-age of one hour per day.)

Noritz attributes the superiorperformance of the NR98-SVtest unit to the thicker, commer-cial-grade copper used in itsheat exchanger, as well as to“subtle engineering nuancesthat improve the water flowthrough the exchanger,” saysHitchner.

“It’s not good enough to ex-tend a 12-year warranty as justanother marketing tool,” hecontinues. “We needed toknow whether our heaters aretruly meant for this kind of use.The tests validated that Noritzproducts with commercial-grade heat exchangers couldstand up to the heavy demandsof a recirculation system whilealso outperforming the compe-tition.”

Softening the water: Anothermajor determinant of life ex-pectancy for a water heater is

the relative “hardness” of thewater supply. Hard water has ahigh scale content that canleave deposits of calcium, mag-nesium and bicarbonate onpipe, valves and fittings as wellas water heating components.Difficult and costly to remove, these highly insoluble depositsalso hurt system efficiency whileboosting operating costs.

Water conditioning with asoftener can help minimizescale deposits, but a softeneris not a viable option in everylocale. Because these devicesdischarge sodium and otherchemicals into the water sup-ply, some jurisdictions have pro-hibited their use. Softeners alsorequire regular maintenance.

A recently unveiled alterna-tive is the Noritz H2FLOW™.This cartridge-based systemproduces no chemicals or salts, yet achieves a 99.6 percent ef-fectiveness rating in scale pre-vention. Cartridge replacementis required only once every twoyears.

H2FLOW technology fightsscale buildup by changing thechemical structure of the wateras it flows through the device, converting hard minerals intosoft particles that will not adhereto plumbing-system compo-nents – including the waterheater. “By preventing scalebuildup, H2FLOW offers theadded advantage of maintain-ing the energy efficiency of thewater heater over many yearsof use,” says Hitchner.

“With the H2FLOW, evenhomeowners living in hard-wa-ter areas can enjoy the conve-nience of instant hot water witha well-designed controlled recir-culation system that enablestheir tankless water heater toprovide years of reliable ser-vice,” says Hitchner. “Thatis the type of system ournew warranty extension ismeant to protect.”
