1QUT WAYFINDING SIGNAGE MANUAL
ISSUE C - 15.11.2012
The QUT Wayfi nding Signage Manual provides a clear strategy for the design and
installation of wayfi nding and signage systems on all QUT campuses and offsite facilities.
The manual has been prepared by the QUT Facilities Management Department and is a
controlled document..
The aim of the Wayfi nding Signage Manual (the Manual) is to ensure all grounds and
building signage is consistent, coherent and easily understandable. The Manual has been
developed in accordance with all Building Code of Australia (BCA) regulations.
The signage manual provides information on how to design and specify the complete
range of sign types required for effective wayfi nding and identifi cation of QUT facilities.
The manual describes the principles of the wayfi nding strategy and details the range of
approved sign types, visual and graphic standards and also construction standards which
must be adhered to.
This manual must be strictly followed as part of the design process on all capital and
maintenance projects where new signage is being installed or existing signage upgraded.
Due to ongoing expansion and development of the university, this manual will be reviewed
periodically to maintain accuracy and to capture changing signage needs.
For clarifi cation of any aspects of this manual please contact QUT Facilities Management
at http://www.fmd.qut.edu.au/
The QUT Wayfi nding Signage Manual builds on the strong and readily recognised
visual identity of QUT. The implementation and ongoing maintenance of the manual is
an important part of the QUT facilities management process. I endorse its content and
approach.

Proposed Wayfi nding Model
A wayfi nding model is defi ned as the hidden logic of a site. This model assists visitors to
navigate across the site by establishing a mental map; a simple diagrammatic view of the
site that can be comprehended easily and quickly.
The most appropriate model that can be applied across the Gardens Point and Kelvin
Grove campuses uses the concept of connectors. This defi nes and names all major
pathways as streets or lanes. These streets provide orientation, connect specifi c precincts
and establish addresses for all destinations.
Wayfi nding Plans
The following pages show Wayfi nding Plans for each Campus based on the connector
model. These plans illustrate the various aspects of each Campus such as:
• Campus arrival points
• Decision points
• Pathways (vehicular, service, pedestrian,shared)
• Destinations
These key points will determine the relevant sign type for each location.
Campus arrival points will have the following sign types
- Campus identifi cation signs
- Site directory information signs at pedestrian arrival points
Decision Points will have the following sign types
- Street name identifi cation
- Directional signs (vehicular and pedestrian)
- Site directory information signs at major gathering points
Note that some sign types provide both identifi cation and directional information. This
combination of information on one sign avoids the need for multiple signs at one location.
The street names shown are indicative only. The fi nal names of the precincts/streets will
need to be established by QUT and should relate to historical, geographic or functional
aspects of the surrounding areas.

A-04QUT WAYFINDING SIGNAGE MANUAL
ISSUE C - 15.11.2012
The fundamental principles of the wayfi nding signage uses the progressive disclosure
technique of providing information. This helps to maintain the focus of a visitor’s attention
by reducing clutter and confusion, and cognitive workload. This improves the legibility of
the signs by presenting only the minimum amount of information required to get to the
next decision point.
These principles are as follows:
• identify the campus from all arrival points
• provide site directory/map at major pedestrian arrival points
• identify street/lane names at each decision point
• provide directions to blocks and major public destinations at each decision point
• provide site directory/map at major decision points and gathering points
• identify each block/building at main entry points
• provide block/building directory at main entry points
• identify all lifts and stairs
• identify all entries to faculties and schools
• identify all rooms by their numbers
• identify all other facilities such as toilets, parents rooms and fi rst aid rooms
• provide directional signs to all of the destinations identifi ed above (fi rst list room
numbers, followed by a hierarchical list based on distance, i.e. closest destination is
listed fi rst)
• show accessible paths to destinations, if different from main pathway
• maintain a hierarchical level of information for the user (i.e. do not direct to individual
rooms from the front door of the building)
• provide other signage that regulates behaviour and activities when required
• when directing to exit, provide direction to main building entrance
• use internationally recognised pictograms and English text
• all names and terms to be consistent, user friendly and easily understood
• no naming of buildings unless specifi cally approved by the Director of Facilities
Management
• continue the signage through the whole visitor experience from arrival to exit.

Design Standards
The design standards comply with the current Australian Standard AS 1428.1/ 2001
(Design for Access and Mobility) and the Building Code of Australia (BCA).
Signs are to be consistently placed at heights to suit optimal cones of vision, as shown in
AS 1428.2. sign faces must have low refl ectivity of ambient light.
Mandatory Signs
The BCA 2010 states that in every building required to be accessible, clear and legible
Braille and tactile signage must identify each sanitary facility and accessible space with a
hearing augmentation system. Where an entrance or lift is not accessible, each accessible
entrance and lift (or bank of lifts) and the path of travel from the principal public entrance to
these features and facilities, where their location is not apparent to the building occupant,
must be identifi ed.
Additional Braille and Tactile Signs
Room numbers are the best reference when searching for a room and they are a key to the
wayfi nding system. In addition to the requirement of Australian Standard AS1428.1/2001
and the Building Code of Australia, this manual specifi es the use of tactile text and Braille
for room numbers.
Accessible Zone
Accessible text zone and permissible accessible text zone are the allowed areas where
tactile text and Braille should appear on any sign, so that it can be read (sensed) by
disabled people sitting in a wheelchair without being too low for visually impaired people
who are standing by the sign.
Audio/visual Information kiosks
Electronic information panels/kiosks may be installed in key locations throughout the
campus to assist the University community including people with visual or auditory
impairment. Such systems may provide audio/visual information about the environment
and the location of University facilities and staff. These elements are not included in this
manual.

SECTION B
B-01QUT WAYFINDING SIGNAGE MANUAL
ISSUE C - 15.11.2012
This section illustrates the typical process in selecting the correct type of sign for the
required message.
Sign Type Code
All signs have been categorised based on the type of message they convey. This is
indicated by the fi rst two letters of the sign code.
DR = Directional signs
ID = Identifi cation signs
IF = Information signs
RG = Regulatory signs
Detailed drawings of sign types in Sections D are categorised by sign type.
Different sign types are used in different situations based on factors such as purpose,
physical context or signifi cance. Each sign type is identifi ed by a number following the sign
category letters (e.g. ID1 is a different identifi cation sign to ID2).
In some instances minor differences exist within a sign type and they are identifi ed by an
alphabetical suffi x (e.g. ID1a, ID1b, etc).

Identifi cation signs are used to clearly identify the campus, blocks/buildings, car parks and
all other destinations within the campus.
The scale of these signs relates to the viewing distances required for each sign. The larger
the viewing distance, the larger the sign. These range from large campus identifi cation
signs visible from the surrounding area to small internal door signs visible from a corridor.

Nomenclature
The naming of each destination on campus must follow the QUT Organisational Structure.
This list is available from the QUT web site, http://www.qut.edu.au/about/faclist.jsp
The Organisational Structure shown here was extracted from the web site in July 2011.
Please check the web site for the latest listing.
Other destinations
Major public rooms and community spaces such as function rooms and galleries are to
use their individual names.
All other destinations are to use common names across all campuses. These names are
as follows:
• Lecture Theatres
• Lecture Rooms
• Tutorial Rooms
• Meeting Rooms
• Computer Labs
Facilities such as car parks, toilets and parents rooms generally use pictograms rather
than words on the signs.
Naming of University buildings and parts of buildings
QUT Council has determined that, in naming buildings and parts of buildings, due regard
be given to persons who have been associated prominently with the University, including
major fi nancial contributors. Council intends that names only be considered as the
occasion arises or otherwise warrants.
Council has delegated authority to the Vice-Chancellor to approve the naming of
University buildings.

Directory
The hierarchy of messages on directories must also follow the QUT Organisational
Structure. Following is the order in which information is listed on the directory. These are
grouped as either Occupants (grouped fi rst) and Building Facilities (grouped second).
Occupants
1. Faculties, Schools, Portfolios & Disciplines
2. Divisions, Departments and Sections
Building Facilities
3. Major Public Rooms (eg Function Rooms)
4. Lecture Theatres
5. Lecture Rooms/Tutorial Rooms
6. Meeting Rooms/Computer Labs/Other rooms
7. Car Parks
8. Toilets
Where a building houses several sections or schools of a number of faculties, the Faculty
is the primary identifi er in the left column with associated subsections grouped accordingly
in the room listings column.
Divisional names are rarely used as the primary identifi er, rather, services and subsections
are grouped in the room listings against divisional Department names in the left column.
Where a particular School is the primary occupant of the building, the name of the school
may be used as the primary listing in the left column of the directory board with sub
sections grouped accordingly in the room lists to the right.
Further clarifi cation of directional signage policy should be referred to the Director of
Facilities Management.

P XY Directional signs
Directional signs are to use the progressive disclosure technique of providing information.
External directional signs have a single arrow for each direction and fi rstly list Block Letters,
then all relevant pictograms and then list major destinations.
Internal directional signs list all facility pictograms under each arrow, then follow the same
QUT Organisational Structure hierarchy as the directory signs.
No more than 5-6 messages should appear for each direction.
Level Numbering System
The current level naming system for the University uses the following terms:
- Level 4 (and higher, as required)
- Level 3
- Level 2
- Level 1
- Level B1
- Level B2 (and lower, as required)
Ground level is not used as some buildings have multiple entrances at different levels.
This is due to the topographic nature of the campuses. This also results in some levels not
aligning with connected buildings, as illustrated on the Existing Situation diagram. Clear
delineation of arrivals/thresholds between buildings is required in these instances.
Where possible, all linked buildings should share the same level number. This is illustrated
on the Aspirational (Long Term) diagram. This approach should be applied to future building
and refurbishment projects.
Should a building have multiple lifts, a naming system for the lifts may need to be
considered. These names could also be supported by an alphabetical/colour system. This
will require further discussion should this be considered in future projects.

ISSUE C - 15.11.2012
Room Numbering System
Room numbers are used as the primary identifi er for destinations within QUT. The Room
Numbering System allows room numbering procedures to be applied consistently and
uniformly to all University buildings, this facilitates the day-to-day operations, and the
strategic reporting and planning.
Consequently, all rooms have a unique number and they require a room number sign.
The room number is the best reference when searching for a room and the use of room
number in wayfi nding is to be encouraged in all instances.
Case
On signs, all messages should be in Title Case (each word starts with a capital letter,
with the remaining letters being in lower case), except on sentences in notices/regulation/
information signs. All uppercase letters are only to be used on street names and statutory
door signs.
Punctuation Marks
The use of commas, full stops and other punctuation marks should be avoided on signs,
with exception of the following:
- notices/conditions/regulations;
- interpretive information;
- listing of room numbers (e.g. Rooms A120–A125, A128) on directional signs and
directories.
Destinations that span a range of rooms should be indicated as shown on the left.
When indicating a span of consecutive rooms, use the En dash (–) symbol, not a hyphen (-).
No spaces are required before and after the En dash. Moderate kerning is allowed.
Message Tone
All messages should be conveyed in a clear, concise and positive tone. Messages should
be unambiguous and should not be overly authoritative.
All instructional text should not be beyond sixth grade reading level and should be stated
positively.
Languages
All signs are to be in English only.
Although there are many international students at QUT, we do not recommend including
other languages, since it is diffi cult to determine which languages to include or which to
exclude.
The introduction of other languages will also signifi cantly reduce legibility and signifi cantly
increase the size of the signs.
The recommended solution for multilingual signage is to use internationally recognised
pictograms, refer to Page C-06.

The font Helvetica Neue is to be used in all signage.
Helvetica Neue 65 Medium
This is the main variant of the font family which should be used on most signs.
Helvetica Neue 75 Bold
The bold variant is used for the Campus names, block letters and may be used to highlight
text. The required information hierarchy has been built into the design of all other signs
through use of text and background colour, font size, position and layout.
Helvetica Neue 55 Roman
The roman variant is used for the room names and may be used as support text.
Helvetica Neue 57 Condensed
The condensed variant is used for the Fire Hose Reel statutory signs only.
Text size
Text size on all signs has been determined based on ideal viewing distance and should be
adhered to wherever possible.
Cap X-height
For accuracy in layout of text on signs, the height of the capital letter X (Cap X-height)
should be used instead of the point size of the font. This measurement is always shown in
millimetres unless otherwise stated.

Arrows play a major role in wayfi nding, so they must be used consistently and effectively.
A specifi c arrow type has been chosen to complement the font Helvetica Neue. This arrow
type should be used in all directional signs.
Arrow directions
Up pointing arrow is used to direct forward.
Right and Left pointing arrows direct to destinations that require pedestrians to turn right or
left, either at the sign or immediately after the sign.
Diagonal arrows direct diagonally up or diagonally down when located next to stairs or
escalators. In other locations they direct diagonally ahead. Diagonal arrows may never be
used to direct diagonally backwards.
Down pointing arrow should only be used when the sign is above the destination.
Arrow usage
A single arrow is required for each direction, not for each destination.
Arrow bounding box
A square bounding box has been included in these arrow drawings as guides for the
correct alignment of arrows and text. Note that the tip of horizontal and vertical arrows
extends beyond the box boundaries. After setting arrows and text, when it is no longer
required, remember to remove the bounding box from the graphic layout.
Arrow priority
Messages directing ahead, diagonally ahead or diagonally up should appear at the top of
the sign.
Messages directing left, or diagonally left should appear on the left side of the sign.
Messages directing right, or diagonally right should appear on the right side of the sign.
Messages directing down or diagonally down should appear at the bottom of the sign.
An arrow should always point away from the message.

This schedule specifi es the colours to be used in all signage.
Colours have been adjusted to suit the available standard paint, anodising and vinyl
colours.
Colour Strategy
Colours have been chosen to achieve a high level of contrast and legibility as well as to
achieve continuity with the existing external signage system.
Generally all signs appear as charcoal text on silver background, with a charcoal frame
or backing. This is reversed with white text on charcoal background in some applications
such as street name signs and on door signs where contrast is required. QUT Blue is
generally used for the QUT logo only.

‘You are Here’ maps are important elements to assist wayfi nding. They provide a visual cue
and can provide more detail than directional signs.
Fixed maps on signs should be orientated to suit the direction the viewer is facing. Hand
held maps should be based on the same design as the fi xed maps to maintain consistency.
Campus Maps
Campus maps are to be included in the Information Signs at major arrivals and gathering
points. The aim is to keep the map as simple as possible by showing the site boundary,
buildings/blocks, streets/lanes, major destinations and facilities/transport options.
The Gardens Point Campus map is illustrated on this page. The map is designed to be
viewed by the fi rst time visitor, keeping in mind that they will be prepared in some way by
knowing which Block they need to fi nd. Major public destinations, such as Old Government
House and Gardens Theatre are located on the map. Facilities, transport and emergency
services are shown as pictograms.
The map shows the design intent. The fi nal map will need to be developed further and
rotated to suit the direction the viewer is facing. The map will also need to be updated
regularly to ensure the the information provided is relevant and accurate.

Application
QUT is progressively adopting Digital Signage for a variety of signage requirements.
Digital displays may be used in wayfi nding applications, general information provision and
marketing, room booking information and staff directories.
QUT has a preferred digital signage solution and consultants are encouraged to consult
with Technology Information and Learning Support (http://www.tils.qut.edu.au) prior to
implementation of any digital signage solutions.
While the specifi c requirement for digital displays will be dependent on each project, the
signage principles and graphic standards determined in this Manual must be maintained to
ensure consistency.

Preparing a Sign Program

APPLICATION
SECTION E
E-01QUT WAYFINDING SIGNAGE MANUAL
ISSUE C - 15.11.2012
A Sign Program is required when planning new signs for the campus or for future
redevelopments. This program consists of Sign Location Plans and a Sign Schedule and
should be completed by a Wayfi nding Consultant.
Sign Location Plans
The Sign Location Plans show the location of all signs. These should be based on an
accurate plan of the site. Each sign location is numbered numerically with a unique number.
Refer to Sign Selection Guide in Section B for the types of signs required at each location.
Sign Schedule
The next stage is to prepare a Sign Schedule listing all the signs shown on the Sign
Location Plan. The schedule may be generated as a database document and should code
the signs and provide the following minimum information:
• Sign type code (e.g. DR2a);
• Sign number (e.g. 1.3);
• Location reference or photograph;
• Side 1 message;
• Side 2 message (if required);
• Specifi c notes about the sign.
The message must follow the standard nomenclature established in this manual and include
pictograms wherever possible. Refer to the Wayfi nding Signage Principles in Section A, the
Graphic Standards in Section C and details of each sign type in Section D to determine the
correct message.
Once completed the Sign Program is packaged along with documentation drawings
provided in this manual and handed over to a sign maker for tender and production.

E-02QUT WAYFINDING SIGNAGE MANUAL
ISSUE C - 15.11.2012
Managing Vandalism
The design is mindful of vandalism that may occur in any public place. Vandalism may take
place in 3 possible ways:
• physical impact, causing breakage, bending or buckling of sign faces or structures
• mechanical impact, scratching of sign faces
• graffi ti, aerosol or marker pen.
While it is impossible to resist the impact of vandalism, the signs have been designed so
that repair and replacement are simple and cost effective.
Removal of Old Signs
The signage system described in this manual is intended to replace all existing wayfi nding
signs. Having different types of sign systems across each campus compromises effective
wayfi nding. It is therefore important to remove all previous signs once the new signage
system has been implemented. Signs of heritage and historical signifi cance that need to be
retained are exceptions to this rule.
