Beginners’ golf Earlier this year, Cherwell teamed up with the Tom Jones Golf Academy and Hillside Farm Golf Range in Bloxham to offer three beginners’ golfing courses.

For a cost of just £2.50 a week to cover a bucket of balls, PGA professional Tom coached the beginners through the basics of golfing as part of the Go Active initiative to increase sporting opportunities across Cherwell.

All three sessions were fully booked, with 30 people in total taking part. At the end of the courses, 15 of the total attendees booked additional lessons with Tom at Feldon Valley Golf Club to pursue their new hobby – a 50 per cent success rate. Due to the popularity and success of the scheme, there are now plans to run additional courses in August. Full details will be announced in due course.

Sportivate CanoeOver the last two years Cherwell’s sport development officers teamed up with Cherwell Canoe Club as part of the Sportivate initiative to offer heavily discounted opportunities for eight – 25 year olds to experience canoeing for the first time.

Participants were offered a six-week course learning the basic skills from the club’s qualified instructors. The price of the course was £10 (eight – 16 year olds) and £15 (16 – 25 year olds) and if participants completed the course they received a free annual membership to the club.

The offer proved massively successful with all six courses fully subscribed giving a total of 80 young people the chance to try canoeing and pursue a membership with the club. As a result, Cherwell Canoe Club has seen a huge increase in membership and chairman Tracie Collins said: “The Sportivate programme has been great for the club as it has given young people a taster of canoeing and the opportunity for them to join the club. As a result we have seen a big rise in membership and we will continue to work with Cherwell’s sport development team on programmes to help the club continue to grow in the future.”

Across the year CDC promotes upcoming sports and activities but very rarely do people find out what happens in the days, weeks and months following those launches. Looking Back will provide an opportunity to reflect on what has happened in the past and how this is helping to shape things for the future.
