Now that Lent is over, what do we do to follow up on our Christian living? Maybe our activities as Knights can be the answer. We can help with fund-raising for the Knights charities. We can do our part in the unity of the parish by helping at coffee and doughnuts, and at our pancake breakfast. We can join the fraternity of brothers at our monthly meetings and at our Roundtable discussion group.
This will be our last pancake breakfast and Roundtable for this fiscal year. Come and make both a closing success.
This month’s meeting will have nominations for next year's officers and another budget reading. Both of these are important to you as members, so come and be informed about the year ahead.
Our soup and bread was a financial and parish success. This is an important Lenten activity, and adds much to our parish unity. Thanks to all who helped with this.
Have you recruited a new Knight this year? There is still time to do this and add to our ranks. Please consider asking some good, Catholic men to join us.

Pancake Breakfast ~ Our final pancake breakfast (before summer break) will take place on May 7th to coincide with the children’s Mass. Breakfast is only served after the 7:30 & 9 AM Masses.
Lenten Soup & Bread ~ Congratulations to PGK Vinnie Baiocchetti for organizing this effort, and to our volunteer chefs (Chris Hann, John & Carol Habra, Bob Guth, Jim and Frances Corrigan, Jim & Linda McKearney, and Vinnie) who donated their time & expenses, and to our volunteer hall waiters, who set up the tables, cleaned trays, carried food when necessary, and cleaned up afterwards: Curtis Wifall, Dan Davis, Bob Guth, Jim & Michelle Hackett, Tom Monteodorisio, Bob Gonzalez, Pete Staples, Bob Guth, Lou Attinasi, Tom Metzger, Mark Gasper, Pat Donohue, Pat & Sherry McMahon, & Allan Reith. Special thanks to David Orr who helped our Master Chef, donated water for our guests, and cashiered, EVERY Friday night. A total of $1202 was collected (best in 6 years) with all proceeds benefiting the Dominican Sisters on the U of A Campus. Well done Brother Knights!
K of C State Raffle ~ Please turn in or send in your K of C State raffle tickets. All cash, checks, charge slips along with the ticket stubs must be turned in NLT May 12, 2017. Unsold books do not need to be turned in. This annual fundraiser benefits most all our State and Council charities. If every Knight in our Council sells just $60.00 (3 books of tickets), we will meet and exceed our goal of $10,000. The chairman for this event is Tony Sanchez at 571-329-0571 or [email protected]. He can’t do it alone.
Mothers’ Day ~ This reminder may save your life. Mother’s Day is May 14th this year. We will be passing out carnations to all the mothers of St. Thomas after Mass once again. Please make yourself available to help out. Our coordinator for this event is Marty Ronstadt (577-1037).
Blood Drive ~ Our next scheduled Blood Drive is May21st in the St. Thomas Parish Hall from 7:30 AM until noon.
Arizona State Convention ~ The Knights of Columbus Arizona State Convention will take place April 21 -22nd at the Scottsdale Plaza Hotel in Phoenix. All Knights are invited to come. Go to the State website azknightsofcolumbus.org for details. Hotel reservations must be made by the individual.
Degree Information ~ Upcoming advancement degrees in our order include a 2nd/3rd degree in Chandler on May 7th, and June 24th in Vail. A 4th degree exemplification will take place June 9-10, 2017 at the Sheraton Crescent Hotel in Phoenix. KNIGHTS ROUNDTABLE ---Our last discussion meeting for this fraternal year will be in the library on Saturday, May 6th at 8:30 AM after the 8:00 AM Chapel Mass. Fr. Chris and Fr. Paul have selected the following lesson on Faith: BELIEF IN THE WORLD OF TODAY --- 1. Doubt and Belief --- Man's Situation Before the Question of God. We will have pastries and coffee after Mass and since Lent is behind us, come prepared to "enjoy" the hospitality. We will be off all summer for a much-needed rest period and will resume after Labor Day on Saturday, September 1st. Many thanks and appreciation to Fr’s. Chris and Paul for what they do for us. My personal thanks to Fr. Chris for putting up with my questioning and wondering combined, with not "hearing"! We must remind ourselves that both of our Jesuit Astronomers have full plates of their own to deal with. We will adjourn at 9:55 A. Spouses and guests are always most welcome. PANCAKE BREAKFAST---Chairman Lloyd LaComb reported that the April breakfast served 108 patrons and grossed $493 which was the biggest, so far, for this year. He transferred $320 to the Council. Our next breakfast will be Sunday, May the 7th. The following Knights worked the April breakfast: Ray Bruns, Charlie Farnsworth, Bob Gonzalez, Randy Hannon, Jeff Kennedy, Bob Kopas, Lloyd LaComb, Patrick Larson, James and Linda McKearny, Tom Metzger, Larry Rylance, Jeff Vrabel and Alex Wright.
BLOOD DRIVE---Our next bimonthly Blood Drive will be Sunday, May 21st from 7:30 AM to Noon. Sign-up sheets will be in the Narthex of the Church two weeks before the donor Sunday. Please sign-up at your choice of times and support this most worthy cause. The Knight of Columbus strongly supports this vital lifesaving program. Come and support our Tucson Community and possibly assist at the registration desk, or at the Knights canteen after donating. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS PAMPHLETS---Last month we talked about one of the organizations we support financially each year. It was the Chapel Foundation at the Villa Maria Nursing Home on Grant and Columbus. Another little-known Council project we support is the pamphlet racks which are in the Parish Hall. When we became aware of the Catholic Information Service, which is part of the Knights of Columbus Supreme in New Haven, CT, we approached (then) Fr. Todd about setting up a rack in the hall. He approved of the idea, but wanted the pamphlets to be free. The Council then paid $300 (approx.) for the rack. There are two series of pamphlets; one is the Veritas Series which is Catholic or Catholic related subject matter, and the 2nd is the Luke Hart Series which is the Catholic Catechism. There are 30 pamphlets in the Luke Hart Series, and more than 30 in the Veritas series. When Fr. John arrived as Pastor, he approved of a second rack as each rack has only about 30 pockets. The parish paid for this rack, and now each pamphlet has its own pocket. We have kept copies of all our orders from Supreme, which now total 52. A quick check indicates we have ordered over 7000 pamphlets in the 15 years for an estimated cost of $2450. Each one costs us 35 cents, even though Supreme charges others $1.00 per copy. Supreme is so pleased with our support of the Catholic Information Service they have not raised the price to us. In fact, one year the Columbia magazine featured St. Thomas Parish and our Council 10441, because of our support of CIS. All we ask is you take what you what, read it, keep it, pass it on, or return it to the rack. We feel this is an important contribution to our parishioners and others who enter our parish hall. This paragraph is an effort to update new members about our Council's sometime little known activities.

Lloyd and Erin LaComb are the Council #10441 Family of the Month for May 2017. Lloyd and Erin do so much for the Knights and our St. Thomas community. They are the logistics team behind the Mass and Dinner with the Bishop, held every January. This event has helped raise over $633,000 for the Diocese Priests Retirement Fund and vocations. Lloyd is Chairman of the Pancake Breakfast and assists with Blood Drives. Both he and Erin coordinate the St. Thomas Thanksgiving food drive, and their spirit runs through Christmas as well, coordinating the Angel Tree gift drive. Congrats, Erin and Lloyd. Your contributions are noted and much appreciated!

A Founding Notion: Protecting the Breadwinner’s Income
While jobs may be safer in 2017, accidents, injuries, and illnesses that can impact your ability to work still happen. Most, in fact, do not happen on the jobsite or place of employment. Did you know that a 2011 study revealed that more than 95 percent of the long-term disability claims on file were not work related?
The Knights have always sought to protect members’ families from the “loss” of a breadwinner. I’m sure you know all about Father McGivney’s vision for our insurance program. But you may not know that Father McGivney also wanted to find a way to help members who couldn’t work because of an illness. After all, the “loss” of the breadwinner does not have to mean that person’s death; it can also mean the loss of the breadwinner’s income.
Consider that loss for a moment. How would your family fare if a source of income suddenly stopped? Could a dual-income family manage on one income? What about young families with a working father and a mother who cares for the children? What if his income halted due to an accident or illness?
I’ve heard some people say they have coverage at work, but too many aren’t sure what this coverage entails, how much income it would provide or for how long. Having this protection counts for something, certainly, but it isn’t “yours”; it’s provided by the company for which you work at their discretion. It could be eliminated tomorrow.
That’s where a personally-owned disability income insurance product, like Income Armor, comes into play. It can offer valuable income replacement in the event of an injury or illness. If you have a job, you must know about this coverage.

“That Christians in Africa, in imitation of the Merciful Jesus, may give prophetic witness to reconciliation, justice, and peace,” is Pope Francis’ prayer intention for May.
Pope Francis primarily has in mind the Christian-Muslim divisions in the African countries he visited last November. With the number of Christians and Muslims in Africa expanding rapidly at the same rates, there is no easy solution, but there will be no solution at all without our earnest prayers. Those prayers are needed to fill people on each side of the division(s) with the spirit of the Merciful Jesus.
While we shall celebrate Ascension on Sunday the 28th, the feast’s proper date is Thursday, May 25th, which coincides this year with the feast of two Knights of Columbus who were martyred in Mexico. Father Luis Bátis Sáinz (Council 2367) and three laymen were executed on August 15, 1926, and Father Miguel de la Mora de la Mora (Council 2140) was shot in front of his brother on August 7, 1927.
These heroic martyrs of a hundred years or so ago were in a similar situation as Christians in Africa – or elsewhere today. When religion is used to emphasize conflict situations, the matter concerns political control, not faith. That is why a new mindset – and “heart-set” – is needed for true reconciliation, justice, and finally peace.
May Easter peace start with you, and among those you love, and spread outwards to everyone.

Knight of the Month Vinnie Baiocchetti is the Knight of the Month for May 2017. Besides being an usher at St. Thomas, the council is blessed to have Vinnie as our Council Warden. He has been the Chairman of the Soup & Bread committee during Lent for six years. He's also our Brother Knight who orders our Father's Day pens as a give-away.
