Principal’s Report School Vision and Values

As part of our four year external review, it was suggested by the panel that we revisit our

current vision and values. Our current vision is We aim to develop successful, skilled and

innovative learners. This vision is closely linked with the department’s vision, however it

does not necessarily have a strong link to our school community.

As a staff we have started to analyse and discuss a clear vision for our school. When we

looked at creating a school vision we watched the following video to tune us into the task:

We established some criteria to assist us in creating the new vision:

The vision needs to be memorable.

The vision needs to be aspirational.

The vision needs to be achievable.

We are starting to narrow our options down and are close to seeking feedback and input

from parents, students and the wider school community. Below are some current

suggestions that have been made by staff. I encourage you to look at the suggestions and

have a conversation as a family. In the near future, we will send out a survey to parents

and students, so we can receive feedback on the best way forward.

After we have formalised a school vision with the School Association, we will reanalyse

our seven school values (relationships, respect, learning, achievement, resilience, equity

and creativity) and condense them down to three or four values. Currently, seven values

is too many and as a school community it is difficult for people to remember and relate to

all these values. Your thoughts and opinions are important, and we encourage you to

complete the survey when we send it out via email and Skoolbag App.

IMPORTANCE OF SCHOOL UNIFORM

We have been impressed with the efforts parents and students are making in regards to wearing full

school uniform. To make it more affordable for families we have stocked an alternative navy blue

parachute pant. It is available from our school store for $25, this being a more affordable price compared

to the $60 required to purchase the Adidas Reserve Pant. Navy blue parachute pants are also available

from Kmart for $10. I would like to highlight that black shoes are the required item for footwear and

the only tracksuit that is acceptable is a navy blue parachute pant.

PARENT AND STUDENT INFORMATION EVENING - THURSDAY 20 AUGUST

We had an excellent turn-out to our ‘Parent and Student Information Evening’. I hope it was an

informative evening for all students and parents. Our preliminary enrolment figures show that we will

have approximately ninety students next year in Grade 7. We will run three classes and class sizes should

be around the twenty-two to twenty-three mark. I would like to thank Miss Angela Sheahen, Miss Julie

Holloway and all the staff for their combined effort in making the evening enjoyable and informative.

Parents and students who were unable to make it on the night are encouraged to contact the main office

to arrange a meeting and tour of the school.

TEN MILLION DOLLAR REDEVELOPMENT

I am pleased to announce that ARTAS Architects is the successful firm that will guide us through the

master plan and schematic design. The funding will allow us to improve our building infrastructure and

provide flexible 21st century learning environments for students and staff. I have been impressed with

how Heath Clayton and his team have been working with our project team to challenge our thinking, to

make sure we will get the best possible outcomes. We have two student representatives on the project

team, so students have input into the new design of the school. I am hoping to provide a copy of the

Master Plan in our next newsletter.

It is an exciting time for Latrobe High School and its two football teams. On Friday, our Grade 9/10 girls

play in the grand final against Ulverstone High at 9am and our senior boys play in the grand final against St

Brendans Shaw College at 4pm. I am looking forward to watching the games and hope to see many LHS

parents supporting their son or daughter.

HUMANITIES

9B/E Geography – Mr Bird and Miss Johnson

We are currently studying the issue of food security in Australia and around the world. The aim of the

unit is to develop an awareness of food and water shortages around the world and the effects that they

have. Also, students will investigate a specific country and the food security issues of that country, now

and in the future.

9E English – Miss Johnson

We are studying The Outsiders by S E Winton as a class novel. We will also view the movie and focus on

a character study as our major assessment task.

9C English students are currently studying Shakespeare’s language and in particular Romeo and Juliet.

They are reading and analysing the play in terms of themes, characters, plot and figurative language. They

are also viewing several film versions based on the play. Students are also examining semiotic codes in

these films.

Students are developing skills in writing strong topic sentences and developing paragraphs.

In Geography, students are viewing episodes of ‘Escape to the Wild’ with the aim of developing, amongst

other things, awareness and understanding of sustainable living practices in remote areas.

In History, students will shortly begin a study of the Agrarian and Industrial Revolution.

In English, both classes have been

studying ‘Romeo and Juliet’. After

reading the script as a class, and taking

on different roles, we watched the latest

film of the play. Currently, students are

building Face Book pages based on

major characters, and then will be

tackling an assignment which will include

the writing of an essay.

In History we have just started looking

at the ‘Industrial Revolution’. This

follows on from a short unit covering

the ‘Age of Exploration’.

WANTED – LOOM BANDS AND LOOMS

If you have any preloved looms and loom bands, please drop them off at the school office. The looms and

bands will be taken by the Cambodian Experience 2016 travellers to Soksan (a school in Cambodia) for the

students to use there.

School Satisfaction Survey

This year, school satisfaction surveys for students, parents and staff will be conducted during August/

September. These surveys contain questions on a range of matters about our school.

This survey provides an opportunity for students, parents and staff to provide important feedback. This

feedback is valued by our school as a means of identifying what the school does well and opportunities for

the school to make improvements.

Students (from Year 5 and above), parents and staff will be invited to participate. Those students who are

selected to undertake the survey will do so during school time.

You will receive a letter in coming days if you have been selected to participate in the parent survey.

Your responses will be secure and anonymous.

We encourage you to participate and complete the survey so that the school has a clear direction when

planning for future programs and services for students.

Please contact the office if you wish to use a school computer to complete the survey.

LEADERSHIP REPORT

All of the Leadership Team had a great time last Thursday night guiding parents and Grade Six students

around the school. It was a lot of fun meeting next year’s Grade Sevens and we hope that they all had a

good night too.

We have been running the annual Homeroom Volleyball competition during lunch times this term. There

have been some great games that have been very close. We have two rounds to go next week before the

top teams from each House go into the finals.

A big reminder to any student who has a talent that they would like to share, our Red Faces assembly is

being held at the end of the term. Please get your entries in as soon as you can.

Our Grade Nine students have been asked to consider if they will stand for election to next year’s

Leadership Team. Elections will take place early next term but they will need to put their nominations in

by the end of this term. Nomination forms will be available soon. This is a wonderful opportunity for

students and we recommend that every Grade Nine should have a go.

PRODUCTION 2016

So, what is the production for 2016? This is the question on everyone’s lips. Well, we are happy to

announce that next year’s school musical is called Creepytown.

Creepytown is about a shy vegetarian vampire princess called Lucy who meets an adventurous, outgoing

human girl called Jane. Through their meeting, Lucy sees the chance to realise her dreams of escaping

her vampire world and her ‘monstrous’ controlling parents.

Meeting at the dental clinic, recently opened by Jane’s square and well-meaning parents, the two girls

make plans to escape Creepytown forever. But when her evil step father and his Hunchback discover

their plan, Jane and Lucy must act quickly to thwart the uncompromising villains and ensure their escape.

Will the girls find their route to freedom and adventure or will events ultimately unravel their plans?

There are many roles in this comical musical: Jane, Lucy, the Hunchback and his Henchmen, Queen,

Count, Jane’s parents, vampires, werewolves, zombies and witches.

Creepytown is a fun and action packed show which is sure to bring the house down!

Next week we will be holding a meeting for all students interested in being a part of the show.

GRADE 10 REPORT As we are teased into the thought that spring is approaching, with occasional fine weather, it is pleasing to see the students attending school with correct school uniform. However, it is disappointing when students choose to wear black jackets and other non-uniform items when it is colder. Term 3 has seen a concentrated crackdown to ensure that all students are wearing correct uniform. Please contact the school if you are unsure about what is included as appropriate uniform, or if you would like any assistance. As a school, we thank you for your support, as keeping ALL students in uniform is very important for both safety and equity, and can only be achieved with the assistance of parents and guardians. It is understandable that on occasions, your child is unable to wear correct uniform. However, we kindly request a note explaining the reason why and when your child will be back in uniform.

GIRLS AND BOYS FOOTBALL

Both male and female Grade 9&10 students will be representing Latrobe High, as they play in the Football Grand Final on Friday 28 August. The games will be held in Penguin, with the girls playing at 9:00am, and the boys playing at 4:00pm. Congratulations to the teams on making it this far; we hope that you return home with two premiership cups. Good luck!!

ELEVATE EDUCATION SEMINAR

The University of Tasmania Pathways to Success team is presenting an Elevate Education day on Thursday 3 September. This highly engaging program is being offered free of charge for a strictly limited time. The topics of the day include dynamic reading, note-taking, conceptual learning skills, independent learning, standing-out in assessment, pathways to success, study routine, working smart, study groups, and procrastination. To attend this event, Latrobe High School has places for 25 students. Currently, we have more students interested than places available. As a result, students are required to complete an application form and return it to the General Office by Friday 28 August.

DON COLLEGE

The transition process to Don College has commenced with a series of information sessions. These sessions were highly informative and planted the seed for our students to start thinking about their future years. I would like to thank the members of the Don Staff who gave up their time, and also would like to acknowledge the past students who were able to give another perspective into the transition process. Students have now all selected their options for Don College Taster Day, and look forward to the exciting experience. Students were given a 2016 Course Outline booklet. It is important they keep this booklet safe as students will be using these when working with their health teachers to complete their pathway plans, during the last three weeks of this term.

GRADE 7 REPORT

Grade 7 students continue to work hard into Term Three with four weeks left until holidays. This time last

year, students were starting their transition into high school. Gee that time has gone quickly!

This term in Health, students focus on the Australian Curriculum’s contexts for learning: Relationships and

Sexuality. The issues to be discussed include friendships and relationships, hygiene, puberty, conception,

pregnancy, and sexual health. If you wish to have further discussions with your child on this subject there

are free booklets available from the main office. If you have any concerns please contact your child’s

health teacher.

MUSIC REPORT I have been blown apart with surprise and excitement during the last two weeks. All music students have been busy completing their first class performances for the term, and the increase in positive encouragement which they are receiving from their peers is phenomenal. Whether they are just at the start of their instrumental studies, or whether they are quite experienced players, all students, from Gr 7 to 10, have completed class performances over the last two weeks. The range in abilities is huge, yet the response from their classmates has been always positive. I would like to congratulate every student who has gotten up in front of their peers to perform, as well as every student who has sat in the audience and given their time and attention to these class performances. As a teacher, usually class performance time stresses me out no end as there is always a percentage of students who are unwilling to perform due to nerves or fears of bullying. That percentage has dropped significantly this term. I am proud of all of you for creating a safe, friendly, supportive environment where all students (regardless of ability or popularity or any other factor) have been able to ‘do their thang’ and be applauded and feel appreciated in Music. Perhaps this is a reflection of the broader supportive culture of Latrobe High School, where bullying is increasingly untolerated by students across the board? Let’s hope so!
