News from the Principal….

In Pursuit of Excellence

My recent attendance at the University of Melbourne Seminar again highlighted the importance of developing reading comprehension. Reading, as you will be aware, is our focus at the College with our goal being to develop the reading growth of all students. The afternoon’s learning made specific links to improving reading comprehension through the development of world knowledge and vocabulary. These are the main objectives in our reading plan and we will continue to build the knowledge of our teachers so they are implementing evidence-based strategies to develop these areas. The importance of independent reading in developing vocabulary was emphasised and we will continue to promote this in the college on a regular basis. Your support in promoting reading as an enjoyable leisure time activity, as well as an essential skill in everyday life, to your child in the home would be invaluable. This is a great area to work as a partnership to support your child in developing this essential skill.

Our Leadership Team presented our 6-monthly review to our Senior Education Improvement Leader, Mr Paul Hon, last week. The preparation for this exercise provided us with valuable reflection time as we reflected on the progress made against the goals we had set for ourselves. There was much to be proud of but we are not stopping yet! The Rushworth community, of which our college is a part of, should always demand that “In Pursuit of Excellence” is evident in every action we take, every day. The young people enrolled here deserve nothing less.

In May of this year, students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN testing. You will receive your child’s

results and a letter that helps you interpret these. These results are important indicators for us as a college and

provides feedback on our learning and teaching program, as well as information on individual classes and students.

Positive Community, Positive Outcomes

We were very fortunate to have many visitors into the college on Tuesday to witness and participate in the annual Book Week Parade. This year’s theme was ‘Escape to Everywhere’ and there were many interpretations of this evident in the costumes worn by students and staff. The Rushworth Kindergarten joined in also, and these delightful young children obviously had a lot of fun preparing for the day. Thank you to Marg, Elizabeth and the families who ensured these children could participate in the parade. I would also like to thank Kerri-Anne, other staff and all of the students who have worked for an extended period of time to make the event a success. With our focus on reading, Book Week has even greater significance in our college.

The Parent Opinion Survey closes this Sunday. We have invited all of our families (111 in total) to participate in the survey and I am asking (begging) for you to take the time to provide us with feedback on the work we are doing. Our response rate is very low at this time and to have data of any significance, you need to be involved. We are heading into a review in 2018 and therefore your thoughts will have extra significance. I understand that we can be bombarded with surveys from different organisations and they can be left at the bottom of the priority list but this one is of importance to your child’s education. Hopefully, that puts it into the ‘high priority’ zone.

With regards,

Leanne Miller
