RIVERSIDE PRIMARY SCHOOL
ISSUE NO 28
17 SEPTEMBER 2020
Our students are so lucky to have had the LSSSA cross country this year. It looked
like it would not be possible as it was difficult finding a venue that had the capacity
for such an event and restricted community access. It was our school that came
up with a solution that provided an opportunity for all students in Launceston to
represent their school. Thank you to Riverside High for their amazing support.
The cooperation and access of facilities between our schools is wonderful for
public education in our community.
Our students were fantastic – wonderful team spirit, great running. Riverside was
successful in A Division with some super individual efforts and strong team wins
– Grade 3 girls, Grade 3 boys, Grade 4 girls, Grade 5 boys, Grade 6 girls.
Unfortunately, we do feel disappointed with some parent interactions, across a
number of grades, as a result of our involvement in the LSSSA cross country. As
a school we remain committed to the students in our school promoting respect,
sportsmanship, kindness and aspiration. So congratulations to all those students
that shone with those values in representing the school – whether you were place
getters or not. We are proud of you.
A special acknowledgment to Miss Batty and Mr Langmaid for their support with
the carnival organisation and the extra contribution made by the administration
team to support schools arriving on our site to follow the Covid safety
requirements.

A reminder
Did you know that some schools are not open to parents for pick
up or drop off?
Did you know that some schools didn’t run their cross country?
Did you know that some schools are not having assemblies with
any parents?
Did you know in some schools parents are not allowed in
classrooms?
We are doing our very best to make things as normal as possible
for our students, to engage parents whenever possible but to
follow the guidelines mandated by Public Health.
We are still in this together.
It has not been an easy term but we should be reminded how lucky
we are in Tassie. Let’s end our term showing gratitude for each
other.

Congratulations to our team who achieved Honours in the Arts

BOOK WEEK TUESDAY 22 SEPTEMBER
(Please note change of date)
Book Week at Riverside Primary School is in week 10 of term 3 this year. On Tuesday 22nd of September, children are welcome
to dress up as a book character if they wish and bring a picnic lunch. Unfortunately parents are unable to attend this year due to the
current restrictions but we are so pleased to be able to foster a love of literature through our Book Week celebrations.
Bring along a picnic lunch.
21-25 September 2020
*Unfortunately, due to current restrictions, parents and grandparents
are not able to come to the picnic this year
You are welcome to dress as a character from a book you enjoy — perhaps a curious creature or someone with a wild mind!
Together we raised $2331.68
We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone in our school community who helped to make our Father’s
Day stall a success. We were so excited that we could go ahead with the stall and provide the opportunity for
the students to shop for their Dads. We really hope that all the Dads and Pops enjoyed their gifts and had a
wonderful day celebrating Father’s Day.
In a season that made us reluctant to ask for donations we were very blessed to still receive enough donations
from our school community as well as local business to enable the stall to continue as a fundraiser. So we want to
say a huge thank you to everyone who donated and are truly grateful to the following businesses for their amazing
donations:
Exeter Capital Chemist
Pearts Variety Store
Woolworths Riverside
The Celtic Barber
BWS Riverside
Riverside Hair and Beauty Salon
We would also like to say a massive thank you to the amazing volunteers who helped out on the stall and to
those who helped with wrapping and organizing donations. You were all such a pleasure to work with and
made the stall a wonderful experience for all involved.
Congratulations to Seb, George and Toby for winning raffle prizes. We hope your families enjoy your prize.
THANK YOU
ICT UPDATE
At the moment in our Grade 1-6 classes, we are trialling a new distribution model for our ICT devices around
our school. These classes now have small laptop devices that allow for more flexible and portable learning
spaces around their rooms.
Previously classes have been able to book and borrow three computer trolleys to enhance their computer
numbers in their rooms. In response to teacher feedback, we have now directly increased the allocation of
devices to each grade team. Some grades have selected to distribute these evenly amongst classrooms and
some grades have chosen to keep the extra devices in one pod to use amongst their classes. In theory, this
now means that any two Grade 4, 5 or 6 classes will have a class set of devices to share between them. The
Grade 2 and 3 classes have decided to put their extra devices into shared pods. These devices are being used
every day by more students for a whole range of learning possibilities. The use of ICT around our school
is becoming more embedded and creative. Chat with your child to get more of an idea about what they are
using ICT for this year.

We are creative and talented writers in 1MD
Using the wordless picture book Flotsam by David
Wiesner as their seed, 1MD writers imagined they
found this underwater camera. They “developed” an
extraordinary image and wrote an accompanying de-
scription, including onomatopoeia and adjectives.
Shelf dioramas in our class-
room display our writers
produced ideas.
