Letters to the Editor…Dear Editor,I have just received my Rates Notice for the 2016-2017 year. Not only has there been a 4% increase in the General Rates but we are also being slugged an Allora Water Access 20mm Connection (Annual Charge) of $534.20 (this being due to Allora finally getting decent water using the new pipeline, having put up with terrible quality bore water for decades), meaning that our total Rates Bill has increased by over 50%. As Aged Pensioners (and there are many of us living in Allora) this is not sustainable particularly as our Aged Pension has not increased at all, nor likely to in the foreseeable future under our current government (pensioners are a drain on society we are told!!).Seeing as we have more than paid our way over our full working lives and not taken anything back, this is another burden on pensioners. Where will it end, I ask myself? When we all die of cold and starvation?? Roll on the revolution brother!!!David Ffinch

Allora Sports Museum ReportIt's a big week for Allora's current Australian sports representatives. Wallaby and Queensland Reds legend Greg Holmes was farewelled on Saturday night at Suncorp Stadium playing his final game for the Reds following a long and distinguished career. Holmsey will now take up a 2 year deal with the Exeter Chiefs in England. Good luck Holmsey and best wishes. On Monday night Firebirds captain Laura Geitz guided her talented team to an 11 point victory over the NSW Swifts to win the Australian Conference Championship. Congratulations Laura! Again! This Saturday afternoon a function has been organised at the Allora Sports Club to congratulate and wish Matt Denny (Allora's first Olympian) all the best in his competition in Rio.Allora Sports Museum "Hall of Fame-er" Thelma Holmes was selected to play vigoro for Queensland in 1933. She was presented with a hand made Golden Horse Shoe, signed on the reverse by members of the Wheat Belt Vigoro Association. Thelma teasured this and always travelled with it, bringing her luck from Allora. This is permanently on display in the museum. The museum would like to present Matt with a Horse Shoe Ring from the people of Allora to bring him luck at the Olympics. For $10 an individual or family, you can be part of this presentation and sign his congratulations card. Any money over the cost will be handed to Matt to help with his expenses. To pre sign or see the ring, drop in to Lyn-D-Jo Boutique. To further donate to Matt's trip, The Warwick Daily News and Warwick Credit Union have set up a fund with 100% going to Matt - BSB 817 001, Acc. Allora QCWA International Day Country of Study: GreenlandThe transition from Traditional to Modern Greenland - The year 1721 marked the beginning of the new colonial style whereby wooden houses were sent from Scandinavia as timber kits. The tradition of the characteristic, brightly painted houses began then, with colours indicating the function of the building. Hospitals were yellow, police stations were black, churches and schools were red, and the telephone companies and fish factories were blue, making buildings more easily discernable in the winter landscape.Following World War 2, with Greenland almost entirely administered from Denmark, standard houses and blocks of flats were constructed in the urban areas due to the need to provide houses for a lot of people in limited space available. For example, Blok B, constructed in the 1960’s, was a low rent, 320 units residential building in the capital Nuuk. It was part of the Danish government’s programme to modernize and urbanize Greenland by moving people away from the coastal settlements which were considered by authorities as uneconomical, unhealthy and old- fashioned. Unfortunately its design was entirely unsuitable for the Inuit lifestyle. Narrow doorways mean that it was very difficult to leave or enter flats while wearing the essential cold weather clothing. There was nowhere to store fishing gear so balconies were used for this purpose. Drains became clogged with coagulated blood because fishermen carved up their catches in the only “suitable” place: the bathtub. Blok B was demolished in 2012.The establishment of Home Rule in 1979 saw a return to the colourful, wooden, gabled roof Colonial style homes, but with improvements. More spacious, light buildings standing 2-3 storeys high were constructed. The range of colours was expanded to include shades of purple, pink and orange.Today Greenland is the least densely populated country on Earth yet has a chronic lack of housing, mostly due to a lack of investment and the high cost of the imported materials. There are waiting lists for housing of up to 17 years. On a positive note, the new architecture is more in harmony with the landscape than previously. With the use of larger glass windows, residents enjoy generous views of the beautiful country that is Greenland.

CWA Notes JulyIt was spring weather for the meeting with 11 members wondering where winter went. The main business was to make arrangements for the

annual general meeting on 29th July. Allora and Clifton branches have a long-time arrangement to share the AGMS so this year Clifton will be host and prepare lunch. This will be Margaret Ryan's last meeting as secretary and we will miss her experience and efficiency but CWA has limits on the time a member can hold a position. This month branch members helped with catering for the cycling in Warwick on election day and will help with the CWA stall at Jumpers & Jazz on 31 July. There was discussion about catering for the Bony Mountain festival in September and it was agreed to serve cakes, slices, scones and tea and coffee. Unfortunately

the labour needed to transport tents, tables and supplies out and then to dismantle and return is getting hard to find as husbands and members age. There will be no handcraft this month as the teachers are involved with Jumpers & Jazz but we will resume on the 4th Thursday in September. Killarney branch will hold a Beginners' Day later in the year for Floral Art.We had no International report as Alison Payne is out west where she will visit our sister branch in Boulia taking handcraft supplies and hopefully some rain. Boulia have been busy catering for the Camel Races. The meeting ended with assorted puzzles. Everyone had a different one but they quickly were spread around as we tried such things as shifting lines to make squares, finding how long it would take for a worm to climb from a hole or finding words.

Dig Out Your Ugliest Winter Gear!!Next Monday, 27th July (not December) at 7.00pm, it’s time again for Allora’s annual Chaplaincy Dinner and this year we’re celebrating!! It’s our own “Christ-mas in July” and we are going to do it in style! As always there will be great home cooked food, table service by our catering students, and music provided by our dedicated school orchestra. We’ll also hear from Chaplain Brooke about her work and we’ll raise some financial support for her continued efforts. This year though, we’re looking for more audience participation! with unique prizes to boot… Can your team win the trivia quiz?… or perhaps the ugliest Christmas outfit competition?… Maybe your team has enough talent to sing the best Christmas carol? It will be cold (hopefully) with a ‘real’ Christmas tree, and ‘real’ snowflakes made by our intrepid Grade 4’s.If you can get a few friends together, eight to a table, give Estelle a call on 4666 6167. R.S.V.P. this Friday (TOMORROW) to help with catering. Let’s put some Christ-mas cheer into July in Allora. The more the merrier!

Tasteful or tacky? Will your ugliest Christmas outfit outdo this effort?

Allora and District Historical Society

Calling all Financial Members: your small committee continues to work for the upkeep of your museum and for the ongoing preservation of gifts and acquisitions. We were pleased to recently receive a gift of some very historic blacksmith’s bellows from Lyn Patterson and also several items from Ted Cowley including brands and record books. What may seem like “farm junk” to some people are real treasures for historians. Talking of history and preservation, at the June meeting of the Society, a decision was made to white-ant proof the museum buildings, a necessary but fairly costly process. The Annual General Meeting of the Society will be held on Wednesday, 17th July at 8 p.m. and it would be good to have a good roll-up of members. Subscriptions fall due them, $2.00 per annum.Come along and visit the museum and relive your local history.

Red Cross DayThe members of the Red Cross Society celebrated Red Cross Day by holding a “Ye Olde Mill Fayre” in one of the large sheds of the old flour mill, there being an exceptionally large attendance. Mrs. E. C. Dean, secretary, introduced Mr. F. Grayson M.L.A. who, after congratulating the Red Cross Societies throughout Australia for the splendid work they had achieved during the war, declared the “Olde Mill Fayre” officially open. The most amusing item of the afternoon was the mock court which was conducted by Messrs T. J. O’Carroll, judge; H. G.

Deacon, Crown Prosecutor; G. Moulday, E. Cowley and R. Harvey, policemen, the proceeds of this bringing in £10. The total proceeds of the various stalls amounted to £150. The success of the occasion is largely due to the work of the secretary and her co-workers. In the evening the newly formed minstrel troupe made their first appearance in the Protestant Hall when they were greeted by the largest audience that had ever assembled in the hall, people being disappointed in not being able to get admission. The attendance was a record for Allora.Allora’s Past 125 years ago July 1891

Allora CoursingThe third meeting of the Darling Downs Coursing Club took place yesterday at Headington Hill, when the largest gathering was present that was ever seen on a similar occasion in Queensland. Mr. Fisher hospitably entertained the whole company at an excellent luncheon. The hares were very numerous. The following are the results:- The Puppy Stakes – W. A. Deacon’s Butterfly, 1; E. L. Thornton’s Fan, 2; Washbourne’s Quihi, 3. The All-Ages Stakes – Deacon’s Baronga, 1; C. Cooke’s Skip, 2; A. Gwynne’s Sydney, 3.

TRL Round 17 SummaryPittsworth 32 d. Wattles 18 - In freezing conditions. Pittsworth took care of an improved Wattles at Pittsworth on Saturday night. Wattles held the Danes at 14-12 at half time after leading 14-0 until the competition leaders sealed the game with an impressive second half display. Cameron Miller had his best game of the season for the Danes. Michael Carpenter

also played well for Pittsworth. Whilst Captain Dale Perkins and Nick Morris were Wattles best.Pittsworth 32 (Liam Jocumsen 2, James Dempsey 2, Jeff Weber, Cameron Miller tries Jake Johnston 4 goals) defeated Wattles 18 (Tyrone Jowett, Michael Duggan, Joe Morris tries Nick Morris 3 goals)Reserve Grade: Pittsworth 56 d. Wattles 0 Under 18 Pittsworth 18 d. Wattles 6Souths v Gatton Saturday 6.30pm Clive Berghofer Stadium, Toowoomba - Clive Berghofer Stadium officials called all games between these two clubs. A Toowoomba Rugby League board meeting on Monday night will discuss the playing of the

Second Division President Cup at a later date. It is expected each side will receive one point each on the ladder.Brothers 72 d. Oakey 0 - Brothers were much too good at home for the Oakey Bears as they piled on 68 unanswered points. Oakey were able to stick with the Leprechauns for the first fifteen minutes of the contest but once the scoring began the floodgates opened and Brothers piled on the points. Oakey’s lack of fitness and at times lack of commitment to the tackle meant they were no match for Brothers speed and strength. Oakey were also guilty of poor ball control and they turned position over too often and Brothers took advantage of the glut of possession and territorial superiority. Brothers ran in 12 tries with winger Josh Davies recording a hat-trick alongside doubles from fullback Marcus Cochrane and backrower Jake Head. The points tally has allowed Brothers to grab third spot on points difference from Souths whose weekend game was washed out.Brothers continued Oakey’s forgetful season by trashing the Bears at Terry Mickleborough oval on the weekend. Ricky Davies, Michael Cochrane and Marcus Cochrane were the chief destroyers for the Brethren.Brothers 72 (Josh Davies 3, Marcus Cochrane 2, Jake Head 2, Aiden Watterson, Mitch Revell, Ricky Davies, Sam Betros tries Michael Witt 7, Mitchel Tuite 2, Mitch Revell goals) defeated Oakey 0

Wattles JRL newsTenterfield Tigers were Saturday's fixture games for Wattles Juniors this week. Our Allora Pharmacy u7, Clancy Smith Water Services u7, Hopper Haul u13 teams all went without games this weekend. The weather was a typical winters day in Tenterfield, cold and blustery with misty

rain, the towns folk whilst always friendly were a touch bullish after their origin victory, one had to keep reminding them they won one game, not the series. Our teams had a great day out in Tenterfield, all players hit the ground running. The Steele Rudds Service Station u8 team were strong, with good performances across the park. Our Cook Haul u9 players were strong, a few players had recently played in the Zone 5 carnival recently and they were eager to test their skills against the Tigers team that also contained McIntyre rep players. Our ball movement was good and the defensive structure the team was showing kept the Tigers on the back foot. The Eastwell and Sons u10 team were full of energy even in the freezing cold of Tenterfield and took the field ready to play. From the opening kick Wattles were able to put together a perfect set of six scoring on the last play. They continued to dominate with solid defence and great attacking football with plenty of ball movement .Wattles scored 10 tries and only conceded 2 , once again it was a great team effort. This weeks best on field went to Corey Deehan and Marty Worboys .Every week we improve and grow as a team , Well done Wattles under 10'sOur Clifton Auto Ag u11 side played against the completion front runners today and were in the match for a long way with the lead changing often in the first half. Our defensive line held together but eventually the Tigers started busting through us easy. The boys eventually went down in the game but will take

away a lot of knowledge from the defeat. The Ryanie for Tyres u12 were clinical in their game. Plenty of hard running from the forwards and good tactical play from our halves throughout the duration of the game gave our outside backs plenty of room to move with a few long range tries occurring. This result will help the team in their march towards the finals .The Clifton Real Estate u14 were very good.. Jack Bashford was instrumental in the result with some hard running proving difficult to stop, the team as a unit jumped the gun early on the Tigers when Travis scored 2 quick tries in the first 10 minutes to have the warriors up 12-0 before the tigers were able to catch their breath. Some great hard running by forwards Owen, Jayden, Jack B., and Logan kept the Warriors in the contest when the Tigers started to make a comeback in the first half. Joe and Travis had a fantastic kicking game this week with the ball finding it's mark on every occasion. The team showed great determination when they moved up the field as a unit with their good attacking game making up for some occasional lapses in defence. A couple of good intercepts and dummy-half scoots helped our scoreline with tries to Darby, Rylan, Jack B thanks to the U13 boys who played well for us this week. Wattles 22 - Tigers 16Our u16 Hamblin Builders managed to string together 2 wins in a row in Saturday and have some hope of making the finals. Good commitment from all the lads in both attack and defence was good to see. Nick Blakemore was named players player for a strong all round game, Darcy ran the ball strongly and was very good in defence. Paden, Dalton, Cahill, Mathew, Hayden and Kaleb were others to impress. We wish Regan a speedy recovery from a broken collarbone suffered just before the end of the game.

netball participation in their remote community in the Pilbara region. The Association has been able to purchase new uniforms using the Australia Post Load&Go card prize and since winning the Award, the team has expanded and has taken a group of players to the Under 12s North West Netball Championships for the first time in more than five years.“Winning the Award has meant a lot to Paraburdoo Netball Association.
