This edition of the Bulletin presents the Christmas 2016 stamp issues, our traditional religious and secular designs, as well as the seasonal fun of the illustrated Christmas Island Christmas stamps. The designs we create to mark the festive season are among the most widely enjoyed of the year, as these stamps adorn the many cards of goodwill and cheer that are sent at Christmastime.

The 2016 collections of Australian and territories stamps – each a wonderful addition to any personal library – make special Christmas gifts. These annual publications present a window onto Australian culture, history, nature and even obsessions through the art of stamp design and the stories that illuminate the issues released during the year. This year will be the first that Australia Post has included Norfolk Island in its territories collection of stamps.

On page 7 of the Bulletin, show organiser the Australian Philatelic Federation introduces

the Melbourne 2017 International Philatelic Exhibition, taking place in March next year. I urge collectors planning to attend the show to keep abreast of details and the special souvenirs by regularly visiting the Melbourne 2017 website at melbourne2017. com.au. When you plan your visit to the show, make the most of your travel by considering the many other attractions that Melbourne and the state of Victoria have to offer.

This year’s religious stamps depict three episodes from the familiar biblical story of the birth of Christ. They show Mary tenderly cradling her newborn son; a trumpeting angel announcing the glad tidings of the birth; and the three wise men sent by King Herod to investigate the birth of the Saviour.

In the biblical Christmas story, the three wise men, or Magi, arrived in Jerusalem from the east, with news that the King of the Jews, or Messiah, had been born. Alarmed, King Herod ordered the wise men to embark on a journey to find the child.

They followed a guiding star to Bethlehem, where they found the infant in a stable with Mary, his mother. The wise men were over-whelmed with reverence and awe. They knelt before the baby Jesus, offering precious gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, before returning to their own countries.

The religious stamp designs have been created using the intricate art of hand paper-cut. Two other stamps, have been designed to reflect more secular celebration, and the universal values of joy and goodwill.

This stamp issue continues a theme enjoyed by many at Christmastime each year. Santa and his Christmas Island friends deliver season’s greetings in their own unique style. The designs show Santa making his annual visit to Christmas Island in the early hours of 25 December. After the freezing temperatures of the North Pole, he’s feeling the heat on this tropical speck in the middle of the Indian Ocean. But with the assistance of Rudolph and the trusty elves

he refuses to be deterred from delivering Christmas cheer to Christmas Island’s eager inhabitants, including crabs, turtles, bosunbirds, frigatebirds and boobies. They’ve been waiting for hours, scanning the big blue sky for the first glimpse of Santa’s sleigh. As the red-clad Santa swoops across the steaming, dense forest he thinks that next year he might consider wearing something more suited to the island’s humid conditions.

Venue details Caulfield Racecourse is one of Melbourne’s most versatile indoor/outdoor venues for exhibitions with multi-purpose indoor space in a variety of room sizes spanning over three levels, two of which will be used for MELBOURNE 2017. The venue features historic architecture and panoramic views. Onsite parking is available for over 4,000 cars. The venue is also just a short stroll from public transport and only 15 minutes from the CBD. Caulfield Racecourse is popular for events because of its convenience and accessibility.
