Dear Parents,

Our Remembrance Service today was led by the Reverend Simon Leigh, Governor and former pupil of the College. Another guest was Ted Lott who was a student at Shebbear in the Second World War. Our multi-cultural student body contained representatives from pretty much every nation that fought in the Great War - it was fitting that they stood together to remember the fallen.

I know that I am getting old because not everyone has heard of Jonny Wilkinson, but on Sunday our First XV won his cup. This was the trophy at stake in the annual rugby competition held by Rendcomb College in Gloucestershire. The boys played exceptionally well to win all of their group games and then defeat the hosts in the semi-final. Having travelled 160 miles it was a little odd to be playing our old rivals Mount Kelly in the final. Two early tries effectively sealed victory in the 15 minute final and the boys enjoyed the trip back to Devon with a celebratory takeaway. We think Jonny should visit us if he wants his cup back.

There is a good deal of important Careers work going on at school at the moment - all organised by Mrs Aliberti. Next week representatives from Futurewise will be in to give one-to-one advice to our Year 11s - the Sixth Form Open Evening is next Thursday.

Tomorrow we have a large block of fixtures against Mount Kelly. There will be a further act of Remembrance before each of these. I am travelling to Mount Kelly, but for those at home there should be bacon sandwiches and a feast of rugby.

Show Jumping Success for HarryHarry had a very successful afternoon on Sunday at the BSPS (British Show Pony Society) Area 13b (Devon and Somerset) Points Awards 2017.

Harry won 5 classes and then went on to be Supreme of 3 Section, and overall rider with the most points. The classes Harry completes in are age 9 and under and age 12 and under. Many congratulations Harry.

Science Talk to Pre-PrepPre-prep were very excited this week when Mrs McEwan kindly brought her tortoise and bearded dragon into school. We learnt about the types of food they ate each day and how they needed to be looked after. It was a very interesting end to our science topic about pets and we would like to thank Mrs McEwan for sharing her knowledge with us.

Prep SchoolSome of our Year 6 children gave their Spoken English competition talks in assembly on Monday morning. Rosie spoke about the perils of smoking, Savanah spoke with great conviction about how personality should be far more important than looks, and Sebastian gave a very informative talk on the world of hamsters. Many congratulations to them, and to all of Year 6 for their talks last week.A very busy sporting week has seen the first High 5 match of the season against Holsworthy, under 9 netball and rugby against St. Joseph’s and a very successful under 9 rugby tournament at Mount Kelly yesterday afternoon. Year 5 had their final swimming session on Wednesday and it is the turn of Years 3 and 4 from next week.

Remembrance has been the theme for much of this week and many of the children have produced some stunning pieces of writing. This morning, Year 6 joined with the Senior School for a Remembrance Service in the chapel and Years 1-5 gathered for a Remembrance assembly in the Prep.

Congratulations to Carter, Lizzie, Sonny-Beau, Jonathon-Michael, Elsie, Ben, Ella and Maddie for winning last week’s Golden Stickers. Our BAFTA (Behaviour Award For Thoughtful Actions) was awarded to Willow, with the Manners Medals going to Tom N. Bella is our Musician of the Week for her super piano playing in Monday morning’s assembly. Jemima was also awarded a Bronze Certificate for her excellent work and we heard from Millie and Rosie about their medals awarded to them at Bideford Nippers Surf Lifesaving Club.

The Prep School got together again at lunchtime today, for our Chapel Run.

I hope you have a good weekend.Matthew Foale

Gliddon and Squire Cross-CountryThe latest round of the league was held

High 5 Netball vs HolsworthyThe first High 5 netball match of the season took place on Monday afternoon at Holsworthy Leisure Centre, against Holsworthy. This was a very fast moving game; passing was sharp and effective from both sides, although we were able to use our possession more effectively. Freyja, Millie and Alfie covered a lot of ground and kept the pace of the game high, and Freyja’s shooting was excellent. Demelza, Savanah were often able to win the ball back from interceptions and Maddie and Will linked passes extremely well throughout the match. A very encouraging 5-1 win was the final score and the next match is against Langtree on Monday 20th.

Under 9 rugby vs St. Joseph’sOn Wednesday afternoon, the Under 9 boys travelled to St Joseph’s to play rugby. It was a fantastic afternoon and Shebbear and St Joseph’s showcased some great skills. There was some brilliant attacking running from Harvey, Axel and Jethro but a special mention must go to Jonathon-Michael, who tackled superbly all afternoon and was named player of the match.

Under 9 Netball vs St. Petroc’sShebbear Prep Under 9 netball team faced a challenging opponent, when the St. Petroc’s girls came to play us at home. We knew we would have to really pull out all the stops in order to contain them and so we had been working hard on our marking and dodging skills. The St. Petroc’s team were fast and agile and were really adept at finding space on the court. Unfortunately we

weren’t quite as nippy and as a result they secured possession of the ball and managed to score a number of goals against us. It was a steep learning curve for us and the Shebbear girls acquitted themselves well and enjoyed the match even though we lost. I must commend our players on really tight footwork and accurate passing on the day. Lots of positives to take forward to our next fixture. Player of the match was Jemima for audacious interceptions.

Under 9 Netball vs St. Joseph’sOn Wednesday the 8th of November, the Under 9 netball squad travelled to St. Joseph’s for an away match. We had the fantastic opportunity of playing on their lovely all-weather surface and the team enjoyed every moment! The girls have improved enormously over the course of the season and our marking was really tremendous. Stand out players were Elsie Turner, for sticking to her counterpart like glue and Lydia Andrews for some gutsy interceptions. Lila-Mai scored a wonderful goal and the results was a 1 – 1 draw. Player of the match was Scarlett Hawkins for her agility and focus.

Opportunity for Year 12 Students Interested in Studying Law at UniversityThe Cambridge Sixth Form Law Conference is an access program for students in Year 12 which is held at Cambridge University. Each year, 250 Year 12 students spend four days in the city, living in the colleges and attending a series of mini-lectures and social events. The aim of the Conference is to give those who attend a flavour of what life as a Law undergraduate is like. We have social events in the Union and even a Mock Trail which is often the highlight of the delegates’ week! We also have talks from law firms, a solicitor, a barrister and a High Court judge to show where a degree in Law could lead you! The aim is for the week to be both informative and fun!

If you’re not convinced that you want to study Law, or that you want to apply to Cambridge, please do consider applying anyway! The Conference doesn’t try to hard-sell Law or the University but can play a vital role in dismantling some of the stereotypes surround what is is to be a ‘Cambridge student’.

A past delegate said of the Conference ‘I have very little family history of University association, and attended a state school in Nottinghamshire with a virtually inexistent history of sending

students to Oxbridge. I believed the stereotypes of Cambridge being for the rich and the elite, but attending the Conference and spending a number of days around current Cambridge students and academics was crucial to breaking down the stereotypes surrounding the University. Cambridge may have its history and traditions but - much to my surprise at the time - its students are normal people, from normal backgrounds, who enjoy doing normal things.’

We are delighted to announce that we have 55 fully-funded places on the Conference this year, after the success of our funding scheme last year. This funding can be applied for via the ordinary application process which can be accessed via the website. This funding covers the cost of the Conference, including accommodation, social events, and all meals. Cambridge Admissions Office will determine who, of the applicants who have applied for funding, are most in need of financial support and will guide us in allocating the places.

If you have any questions please email Emma Kemsley-Pein at [email protected] or Ben King at [email protected]

A Message from KPMG Student RecruitmentKPMG Apprenticeship Schemes are a great place for your students to start their career.

Why does a firm like KPMG recruit apprentices?Quite simply, because they are our future. Research shows that in classrooms across the UK more talented students, like yours, are considering starting a career straight after their A-Levels or Scottish Highers, rather than following the traditional university

route. We think that your students have just as much potential to succeed at KPMG as our graduate trainees - our entry-routes reflect this belief.

KPMG’s Apprenticeship Programmes offer plenty of support for your students at every step of the application process too – from making that initial decision to knowing what to bring along on the first day. As well as your students having their tuition paid for, they’ll also earn while they learn.

Which areas can your students work in as a KPMG Apprentice? There are several KPMG Apprenticeship Programmes available to your students which cover different areas of the business, all offering a refreshing alternative to the traditional university experience. There’s loads of support available for your students at every step of the application process too - from making that initial decision to knowing what to bring along on the first day. As well as your students having their tuition paid for, they’ll also earn while they learn.

KPMG Discovery is for Year 12 students looking to gain work experience. This two, three or five-day (depending on office location) programme will give them useful industry knowledge, career opportunities and the chance to develop the skills they’ll need to apply for a role with us.

KPMG360° gives students the chance to join KPMG and work with some of the best and brightest in the business world. Importantly, it includes a foundation year that’s specifically designed so they can experience all areas of the business before they go on to choose an area of specialisation and gain a professional qualification.

KPMG360° Digital is a new four-year apprenticeship programme that combines academic study with practical work experience. At the same time, they’ll also study for a BSc degree in Digital and Technology Solutions with our training provider, BPP University.KPMG360° Business Services is a two-year apprenticeship programme. As a new apprentice, your student will be fully supported throughout the programme with guidance from KPMG teams and gain a professional qualification. If you’ve got any ambitious, bright students who might be interested in a KPMG Apprenticeship programme, then you or your students, can find out more and apply here by visiting our careers website.

See Mrs Aliberti if you need any further information.

as they are expensive to replace (approximately £43 each) and you will only receive a Statement of Results. The school cannot obtain replacements for you.

It is your responsibility to collect your certificates. We are only allowed to retain certificates for a period of 12 months after which they will be destroyed securely. You would then have to pay to obtain a statement of results directly from the exam board.

You will be required to present original certificates at interviews throughout your working life.

Once the certificates have been issued, Shebbear College cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage to your certificates.Liz Garnett

A Word from the LibraryWe are very grateful to the Friends of Shebbear College for their support this term. Not only did they sponsor the inspiring visit by the author Joffre White but they also sponsored Book Buzz for pupils in Form 1. Book Buzz, originally a government initiative called Booked Up, is now administered by Book Trust; the scheme promotes reading for pleasure by giving young people the opportunity to choose - and then keep for themselves - a book from a wide range of titles. Our Form 1 made their selections early in the term and then waited expectantly for the books to arrive. Last Friday was the exciting day when books were distributed to eager recipients. You can see from their smiling faces how much they had been looking forward to this.

Rugby ReportsJonny Wilkinson Cup WinnersThe 1st XV return after their weekend away in Gloucestershire as holders of the Jonny Wilkinson Cup, having beaten local rivals,

Mount Kelly, 17-0 in the final. Along the way they beat Ewell Castle (8-0), Milton Abbey (12-0), St David’s (19-0) and in the semi final they beat hosts Rendcomb 12-0. The boys defence was excellent throughout having kept a clean sheet all the while scoring a total of 68 points, a tough ask in 10 minute games. Captain and player of the tournament, Siaosi Taufa, was very proud of the team and the performances throughout the day and looks forward to the rest of the season. Congratulations to all the boys.

Jamie Sanders

U14 v St Joseph’sThe U14s travelled to play St Joseph’s this week and played some scintillating rugby in the 60-0 victory. There was some excellent team work displayed throughout the match with great support play from all the players. Harrison Mitchell scored four tries and Luke Maxa kicked six conversions in what was an excellent all round performance.

Netball ReportU14 North Devon Netball Tournament On Monday 6th November the U14 netball team played in a tournament at Bideford College against lots of other schools in North Devon. In our division we had Park, Braunton, Pilton and Ilfracombe. We played Ilfracombe first and beat them 12-0, which was an amazing start to the afternoon. Next we played Pilton and we also won that, 9-4. The last two matches in our group were against Braunton and Park. Unfortunately we lost both of these 3-4 against Braunton and 10-5 against Park. Although we were disappointed at just missing out on 2nd place in our group to go through to the semi’s, the teams we lost too went on to get 1st and 2nd place in the whole tournament. Everybody played extremely well and we were all proud of the overall result.
