NZMA COOKERY SCHOOL IN PANMURE On Friday 22nd February it was my turn to visit the NZMA cookery school in Panmure. Taoa, Panmure Security, and I were greeted by Campus Principal Leanda Bekker. The relaxed yet professional environment is extremely welcoming and is home to approximately 60 new students. I was pleased to see some familiar ‘local’ faces amongst the intake as well as interested to know that students were travelling from across town favouring Panmure as it was so accessible by train. I was impressed with the pride the students showed in their cooking and also the pride they showed in their very smart uniforms. I ques-tioned the students about why they had decided on their course and venue. With the younger students it was because it was just an ‘awesome course’. Another student was a trained beautician and she was ‘learning to cook for my kids’ as well as learning about the hospitality side of running a successful business A very open faced and friendly older woman ‘born and bred in Panmure’ praised the course for its ‘convenience and locality’, as well as its ‘multi cultural’ environment. She was im-pressed that the school once you graduated assisted in finding you with employment. The course also has a computer room where the students are given ‘awesome c.v. workshops’. Its seems there is a place for everyone; students straight from school and mature students wanting to ‘ do something different’. I see great things coming out of this school.

Looking back on 2012, the Board, staff and I were very happy with the
completion of our two main projects, the installation of ten additional CCTV cameras and the
success of the International Food & Moon Festival event. Unfortunately,
throughout the year we became increasingly aware of a black cloud descending on our town centre. This cloud took the form of a group of young men and women who seem to be hell bent on the destruction of
Auckland Council and our business owner’s property with no care or thought as to who was being affected.
I returned from my holiday to a large list of criminal incidents and some very unhappy business owners. Most
of these incidents had been done by the same group of young men and it took quite some time to follow up on these incidents.
Fortunately, we have a good working
relationship with our local police constables and Senior Sergeant
Graeme Porter visited our office on numerous occasions to listen to my annoyance and frustrations with these youths. The Police instigated an action called ‘Operation Open Spaces’
which targeted any youth that were hanging around our town centre and other public areas. We were regularly updated on this successful operation and were pleased that the Police received support from the newly
formed and very active Tamaki
Community Patrol. This is a group of volunteers who spend a few hours each night driving around Glen Innes, Point England and Panmure checking up on the ‘hot spots’ and we are fortunate to receive their nightly
reports via Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board member and TCP volunteer – Josephine Bartley.
Currently the core of the group of youths is now under strict bail conditions and will soon be appearing before a judge. Throughout my
discussions with the Police and community, I have consistently expressed my on-going and sustained frustration at the inability of the NZ
criminal justice system on ways to deal with this group of high level youth offenders who have clocked up thousands of dollars’ worth of damage and wasted man hours.
Work is well underway with the complete overhaul of the PBA website. ‘Old fashioned’ and ‘clunky’ are words that have been used about our existing site. In keeping with the new look website the PBA will have a better balanced and refreshed logo
that continues to reflect our relationship to the two major landmarks – the Panmure Basin and Maungarei/Mt Wellington. We will be approaching you soon to make sure your business information is correct for the vastly improved Business
Directory.
Thank you to the staff of New Zealand Management Academies for inviting me to their Open Day. What a fantastic organisation this is
and it is situated right in the heart of our town centre. I was delighted to learn that the Academy offers classes to not only overseas students but local students as well and the uptake on the course has been excellent. Each morning, I enjoy seeing all the
students on the way to their studies.
Once again the PBA supported the Panmure Libraries party that they hold at the end of the popular Summer Reading Programme.
We paid for BJ the Clown to perform a 30 minute magic show which was fun for both the kids and the adults.
I was asked to speak on behalf of the PBA Board at the opening of the Lagoon View Kindergarten. This
new business has been established in the old College of Kinesiology building at 23 Domain Rd and owner/operator, Bryan Salisbury has been busy over the past two months preparing the building for the start of the first Term.
The facility is fresh and inviting and
we wish him the best of luck with his new venue.
I was asked to an AMETI site visit to
see the progress over the past six months of the project. The Mayor Len Brown, the Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board and others were conducted on a tour of the latest structural work. I was pleased to
hear that the move from the old Ellerslie/Panmure Highway rail bridge to the new one went smoothly and the new road layout is very easy to understand.
I made a submission on the Draft
Auckland Regional Public
Transport Plan at the hearing in the Auckland Council Civic Building. The PBA, along with the proactive Panmure Community Action Group wants to make sure that in planning
the Auckland Regions new bus routes that Auckland Transport planners do not remove the buses from Queens Road.
We are lucky to have the services of Anthony install and remove the Christmas themed bunting. We will be able to get at least one or two years more of life out of the bunting and I am pleased to report that it has cost us half of what we were paying when we had the big Christmas
Wreaths decorated and installed on the across Queens Rd rigging.
I was asked to support the organization of this year’s Sk8 Competition that was started in 2012 by a small group of volunteers.
The competition attracted more entries this year and the judges were impressed by the standard of competition. The event sits nicely with the Panmure Basin Fun Day and makes a great day out for the
whole family. Once again the PBA supported the Fun Day by providing the ‘Gleneagles Ponies’ for rides and grooming.

Association staging a well-attended cultural performance in the Panmure Community Hall on Friday 15th and on Saturday 16th Panmure Library

CELEBRITY CHEF OPENS NEW NZMA COOKERY SCHOOL IN PANMURE
Celebrity chef Ross Burden officially opened New Zealand Management Academies' new cookery school in Panmure on January 17. The opening drew a large crowd, with locals from the community keen to check out the new training facilities. This is the first time NZMA has had a campus in East Auckland and the provider is excited about offering qualifications and career op-portunities to the area. NZMA has been a leader in hospitality training for a long time, however this is the organisation's first foray into cook-ery. During his speech and cutting of the ribbon, Burden - a self-taught cook, winner of BBC's Master Chef and regular face on Britain's Ready, Steady, Cook - said there was a huge shortage of chefs nationwide and NZMA's new cookery pro-grammes were much needed by the industry. As well as the benefits to the hospitality sector, there were huge advantages for the community. "NZMA offers second chance training to people in the community and they also provide great employment support, through their recruitment arm, NZMA Employment. The students who study here not only get excellent training, but they have a future to look forward to," he said. The official opening of NZMA's new campus started with a Maori blessing led by Eriata Peri and also included live cookery demonstrations from NZMA tutors Brett Adlam and Aldo Franckin. Visitors included media, Panmure Business Association representatives and the local community. They were given guided tours of the upmarket training facility and were treated to mocktails, iced coffees and a barbecue. The Edge radio station was also on hand dishing out goodies. A treasure hunt com-petition was won by Quentin Rapana, who took away a Samsung Galaxy Mini. NZMA’s Joint CEO, Tim Cullinane, welcomed everyone and said that NZMA is keen to be a strong, contributing member of the local East Auckland community.

THANKS to the New Zealand Police Force and its Eastern Area Crimes Unit for
apprehending suspects in several instances of criminal activity in our
town. It has been heart breaking to see how much damage had been
done over the Christmas period.

It appeared that criminal activity increased during the Christmas and New Year holidays. Panmure became the victim of shoplifters, illegal busking, car-break-ins, vehicle robbery, shop break-ins and numerous smashed windows. Particularly frustrating was 16 windows
broken in one spree at the Community Centre, only for another 4 to be smashed again last week by a young school boy.
Despite the outflow of these unwanted activities, with the support from the public and the Police, some of these young criminals will be finally answering to a Judge. Hopefully some deterrent wll be imposed to get these youths back on track.
To the Police and the Tamaki Community Patrol, you are the light at the end of the tunnel.
This week we have had our car parks attacked again by youths breaking in to vehicles. I must stress again that it is most important that no valuables are left in cars. If you must leave goods in your car place them in the boot where they are not visible to potential thieves. Along with the inconvenience, it is a princely sum to have a window replaced or the loss of a no claims bonus.
On a positive note, it is wonder to enjoy such a long hot summer. Time to let our hearts and bodies be warmed by natures glow.

Sadly, two highly valued members of our Board have resigned this year:
Tanya Peters and her husband are making a new life for themselves in Australia. Tanya has been a
Member of the PBA Board since 2008 and had been the Treasurer since 2010. Tanya started working for
Instant Finance, 58 Queens Rd around nine years ago and had worked her way up to the position of
Credit Controller. Tanya said ‘I appreciate the opportunity I was given to be part of such a fantastic
association, to be able to assist and take part in some of the fun Panmure events and to work alongside
great people such as yourself, Lisa, Julie, Taoa and my fellow board members. The knowledge and
experience I have gained over these years are invaluable additions to my life repertoire and will definitely
hold me in great steed for my future endeavours’. We will miss Tanya unfailing positive outlook on life
and her wonderful smile.
Shane Johnston opened Streetwise Tattoo in 2008 at 21a Queens Rd. In 2009, Shane became a Board
Member and in 2010 became the Chairperson. Shane’s first Streetwise shop was situated in Newmarket
and he expanded his business to Panmure and installed managers at both premises. During 2012, Shane
made the decision to return to ‘the needle’ which he has thoroughly enjoyed and set about consolidating
his business full-time to just the Newmarket store. Over Christmas in 2011, he penned his vision for
Panmure which helped me to easily finalise the revised PBA Strategic Plan. Throughout his role as
Chairperson, Shane has freely made time to meet with me and Julie to go over accounts or to discuss
ideas. Shane has been unfailing with his positive outlook for the future of our town and I know that he
has learnt a huge amount about the role of being a Chairperson. Shane said ‘I have thoroughly enjoyed
my time working with positive like-minded people’. We will all miss you Shane.
We are also sad to see the Panmure branch of Flight Centre, 69 Queens Rd, close as well. Staff
members are relocating to other Flight Centre branches and we wish you all the best for your future.
Farewell
The Business Association is sorry to say farewell to
Bronwen from Postie. Bronwen has seen Postie change
from a tired outlet to a sparkling success. One can’t help
thinking that the shop won't be the same without a wel-
come hello and having someone who runs a tight and
friendly team. Go well Bronwen, we will miss you.
Summer Camping Trip … “Are we there yet?” asked Gonzo from the back seat of the car for the fifty trillionth time. “Yes!” I screamed as I gave him the stare of death. We had finally arrived back in Panmure from our summer camping trip that had been eventful. The first night ended with a food fight and after it had rained over night I woke to find honey puffs sticking in places I didn’t think I had. After a wash in the sea most of the pesky little cereal had washed off but I was sad to see breakfast floating away. However my lovely Kermy had gained a few admirers who were very determined to take him home for lunch. A family of sand crabs had wandered up the beach and were admiring Kermy’s juicy green little body. “He’s mine!” I shouted at them. “Go away”. That was not the best thing to do as they began to take an excited interest in my more voluptuous figure. After a Muppet world record sprint to the sand dunes we spent the rest of the day exploring the camp site.
After parking the car we all headed off to the Bridge-It Coffee Shop in the Dove mall to have lunch. As a starter we had the chicken vegetable soup with toast which was heav-enly. Next was a cheese toasted sandwich and finally a piece of yummy light lemon cake. The new owners are so friendly and the food was excellent. As I found another honey puff I looked at kermy and thought … why would anyone eat you my lovely little frog.

A very special Christmas Lunch - A belated Thank you !
Throughout the year The Mt Wellington Foundation Ltd supports the local community through various do-nations and sponsorships. For the second year running, Mt Wellington Foundation Ltd in association with Waipuna Hotel & Conference Centre hosted a Christmas Luncheon for over 300 local Senior Citizens. This was a great opportunity to give something back to our senior citizens, many of whom are returned soldiers who often don’t get the opportunity to share in Christmas festivities, for old friends to reunite and the making of new friends. All who attended enjoyed a full Christmas buffet with all the trimmings and a small gift of mince tarts baked in the Waipuna Bakery.

Young Parent Payment (YPP) – a weekly payment for 16 to 18 year old parents who have dependent children and are in need of financial assistance

The Year of the Snake
From February 15 –22 the Panmure Community Library held numerous
events to celebrate the arrival of the Chinese New Year of the Snake. Your
Business Association showed their support by assisting with food and pho-
tography on February 16 when visitors to the Library were entertained with
traditional Chinese dancing, crafts, food and tea tasting, and an impressive
display of Ashikara Karate and self defence by the Fighting Fit Academy.
Mark Stewart heads The FIGHTING FIT ACADEMY, which offers
Ashihara karate, to all ages from 4-60, as well as kickboxing, Jiu Jitsu, cardio
kickboxing, pump, kicksport, Tai chi chuan, black belt club, personal train-
ing, women's self defence, as well as hosting many seminars' Ashihara Ka-
rate and self-defence.

Aubrey Kirkpatrick is the new Manager at the Panmure Community Library.
Of Canadian origin Aubrey comes to Panmure from the Pakuranga Library.
Aubrey is particularly fond of working with children and teens so will be a perfect
fit with the well established children orientated activities that define our popular
local library. Along with her love of books Aubrey is a keen athlete
and enjoys outdoor running.

Lagoon View Kindergarten is a private kindergarten open
from 8.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. Offering the
Ministry of Education’s ‘20 Hours Early Childhood
Education’ to three, four and five year old children. Longer
hours of attendance can be made available and a Work and
Income subsidy may be used to support this.
Lagoon View Kindergarten’s inside rooms feature a family
play area, construction area and a specific literacy area. A
large open space gym area is designed as an alternative to
the outside play area when it is either too hot or the weather

Taste Panmure Promotion & Competition

This event will be for 10 days and is designed to promote Panmure as an ‘eating out’ destination as well as a cele-
bration of the rich ethnic diversity of flavours that you can find in our town centre. All signature dishes must cost between $5.00 - $10.00 and offer customers a taste of what each restaurant/ food outlet considers their best, most unique or popular dish. Customers will be able to pick up a Taste of Panmure passport from: participating eatery, PBA website, Panmure Library, Panmure Business Association office, Panmure Community Magazine (distribution late April to 10,000 houses), East & Bays Courier and Howick & Pakuranga Times features.
The customers get their passports stamped at three different eateries when they try a restaurant/food out-let’s signature dish. When the passport has been stamped three times they can go into the draw to win prizes eg free local dining.
