2009 Graduation Highlights

The residency program enjoyed another successful graduation event. The 11th Annual Graduation Symposium marked the first, Dr. G. Richard Paul Distinguished Guest Lecturer in honor of BUOSA Professor Emeritus, Dr. G.R. Paul. Dr. Steven Z. Glickel was the guest speaker.

Dr. Glickel is Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons and Chief of the Hand Surgery Clinic at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City. As a thought leader in surgery of the hand and upper extremity, Dr. Glickel has garnered numerous honors and awards. He was named the Lawrence H. Schneider Lecturer by the Philadelphia Hand Foundation and is currently listed as one of the Best Doctors in New York, Best Doctors in America, America’s top Doctors, and Best Surgeons in America. He has served as President of the New York Society for Surgery of the Hand and President of the

American Society for Surgery of the Hand. He is currently Associate Editor of the Jour-nal of Hand Surgery and contributing editor to the Yearbook of Hand Surgery. Through his many scientific articles, reviews, chapters, and editorials, Dr. Glickel has greatly advanced our knowledge of hand and upper extremity surgery. It was an honor to rec-ognize Dr. Steven Z. Glickel as the 2009 Distinguished Lecturer. The day was filled with chief resident debates moderated by Dr. Andy Stein, case presentations by Dr.’s Stein, Jawa, and Soong. Dr. Glickel gave a special emphasis talk on Basal Joint Arthritis. The celebration continued into the evening with an elegant reception at The Four Season’s Hotel. Guests mingled with recent grads and colleagues while reminiscing over achievements and embarrassing moments. The event concluded with the much anticipated faculty roast. It was a truly lovely evening for all who were able to attend. A very special thank you (“holla”) to Lynnette St. Louis for organizing such a flawless day and splendid evening.

Where Are They Now?

PGY 5 Spotlight: Scott Ryan, MD

LS “Do you have a back-up career in mind?” MR “Relief pitcher for the Red Sox.” LS “Ok, favorite memory as a resident.” MR “Many great memories, but I would put the birth of my son at the end of my chief year at the top of the list.” LS “Any words of wisdom for the grads?” MR “1.) You will be very well prepared for your career as an orthopaedic surgeon. 2.) Always be a learner.”

Marc graduated from the residency program in 2006 and after completing a hand fellowship at DUKE University Medical Center, accepted a position as a faculty member. He has been working and living in Durham, NC since. He and Ali are doing well; their son Carter recently turned 3 and Ali is due in early November with a little girl. LS “So, any vacations lately?” MR “One week on Bald Head Island, NC immediately following part II of the boards.” LS “What is your favorite song in the OR?” MR “For some reason, when we are doing free fibs, the Blue Oyster Cult song “Don’t Fear the Reaper” always comes on and one of the residents will reliably quote the Saturday Night Live skit asking for more cowbells.” LS “What is the best part of being an attending?” MR “Teaching” LS “What is the most challenging part?” MR “Going live without a net!”

Mike Kain graduated in 2008 and went on to complete the Müller fellowship in March 09 and started at Lahey clinic in May. He is still living in Belmont, but happy to report that he replaced the Kia “Sportage” with a Honda. Lois is doing well and in February of this year they welcomed their first child, Emma (7 months). LS “Have you been traveling?” MK “Spent 6 months in Switzerland, Zurich and Bern for the Müller Fellowship, then returned to Europe to visit professor in Torino, Italy. During Fellowship visited hospitals with Professor Ganz in Milan, Verona, Venice, and Vienna. Vaca-tioned with Lois in Florence while 6 months prego.” LS “Do you have a favorite song in the OR?” MK “Map of Problematique--Muse” LS “Tell me the best part of being ‘the boss’” MK “Having my own lead” LS “How do you deal with the challenges of being an attending?” MK “Drinking a bottle of Maalox daily” LS “Back up career?” MK “Stay at home dad” LS “Favorite memory as a resident?” MK “Watching Erik Stark reply to a question on the OTA podium with, the words “We looked at the X-rays” LS “Words of wisdom for the recent grads?” MK “Drink coffee and eat lots of BBQ chips, learn to zip jpeg files, keep up with the latest chick music, and enjoy it no matter what.”
