Message from the President Greetings Flutists! I hope everyone is surviving the winter weather we are experiencing this year. I am sure you are all looking forward to the spring season and the sensational events that FSSL has planned! In this issue of Key Notes, you will find information regarding upcoming events, details about featured guest artists for Flute Day and a delightful member spotlight interview with Indie-Rock flutist, Courtney King. I think you will find her journey and advice to be quite motivational. As a reminder, our 6th annual Trivia Night Fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, April 11 at the Wild Acres Banquet Hall in Overland. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. and games will start at 6:30 p.m. If you would like more information or to purchase tickets, send us an email at [email protected]. Be sure to keep Saturday, April 25 on your calendar for our yearly Flute Day. It will be an exciting event featuring world-renowned flutist Carol Wincenc. FLUTE DAY 2015 As a reminder, this season’s annual Flute Day will be on Saturday, April 25, 2015 on the campus of SIU Edwardsville. The registration table will open at 9:00 a.m. Early registration is recommended as we are expecting record numbers in attendance.
We are proud to announce that our featured guest artist will be Carol Wincenc, flute professor at the Juilliard School and Stony Brook University. Ms. Wincenc will coach a master class from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and perform a concert with collaborative pianist Patti Wolf at 4:00 p.m.
Other events on the program will include the Morning Warm-ups with Courtney King, College and High School Young Artist Competitions, Lecture on the “French Flute School” presented by Paul Thompson, Irish Flute demonstration by Lisa Gilbert, Middle and High School Master Class with Paula Bernhardt. To end 2014, the FSSL Flute Choir celebrated the holiday season through performances at Chesterfield Mall and the historic Lafayette
Square during the annual Holiday Parlor Tour.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Courtney King
-‐Why did you choose to play the flute? I chose the flute despite not having the "right" lips for the instrument. My dad however, had pointed out some classic rock tunes that had flute featured. Some of that was certainly Ian Anderson but I don't recall exactly. -When did you begin playing the flute? I started playing with my school band program in the 5th grade. -Do you have any musical highlights you would like to share and/or what is your most notable or personally satisfying accomplishment? I would have to say performing and writing for flute with a rock band is without a doubt the most personally satisfying yet. I have always loved the intensity of sound and emotion in a rock setting but never thought it actually possible for me to do that on flute. Well, we are doing it and perform all over St. Louis and the Metro East and people love it. I have learned to ditch the music stand completely and play with the other musicians by simply listening. It’s a whole new kind of artistry to master and I love the challenge. I attended DePaul University for my undergraduate work studying with Mary Stolper and have since performed in master classes for artists such as Robert Dick, Jennifer Nitchman, Viviana Guzman, Elizabeth Buck, Thomas Robertello and Donald Peck. Upon graduating, I had a studio of 50+ students to fund my auditioning and living expenses. I won an Air-Force Band audition, as did my trumpeting husband! I played all over the Midwest on flute and piccolo in concert bands, quintets and chamber groups. I even sang occasionally in the jazz band. After spending 4 years with the Air Force, I left to stay at home with my kids. My husband continues in the Air Force band and I highly recommend this avenue for performers, even if just for a four-year enlistment. As my kids got older, I began getting back into the practice routine and I sought out a few lessons nearby with Dr. Monier at SIUE. I was blown away at the high level of performers in her studio and decided it would be a great place to work on my Master’s degree. So, currently I’m in my second year of my degree and at the same time, I’m playing flute in concert venues that have never even seen a flute performed live before! It’s very exciting.

-Do you have a favorite practice routine? Can you describe it? Daily, I play long tones to warm-up. Then, I play as much Gilbert Technical Flexibility as I have time for. Next, I practice for whatever performance is on the books. Lately, I've been adding in jazz scales and licks to learn to have more available to me in improvising. -Describe any other hobbies you have. I love young people. I homeschool my three kids so I’m always looking for new ways to learn and have a good time with them. My husband and I teach a high school youth group class at our church. And, I also teach a music and movement class through the SIUE Suzuki Strings program of which my kids are a part of. I play acoustic guitar as a hobby and songwriting tool. -What is your favorite style of music to listen to? To perform? My favorite music is the kind that affects you so deeply that you have a physical reaction upon hearing it. Music that makes you want to dance around, music that makes memories flash through your mind; music that makes you smile, laugh or even cry. It's hard to put a finger on a genre and I like to keep an open mind. I do mostly prefer listening to and performing music that has been written in my lifetime. I believe as artists we have a responsibility to perform and bring to the public what modern day composers are writing. Play new music! -Do you have any advice for aspiring flutists? Go after what you are passionate about! How do you do that? Always practice fundamentals and be moldable, willing to learn. College students, you have more time to practice than you think. Make it a priority. No less than 4 hours a day. Your future family-rearing business-running self will thank you later! Follow the path your teacher has for you, learning as much as you can to help you discover what really moves you as an artist. Your final goal shouldn't just be to play the flute beautifully, though that is a part of the whole, rather, how can you most effectively express to the world your unique life experiences through you’re artistic voice… which happens to be a flute.

Carol Wincenc
Professor of Flute at the Juilliard School and Stony Brook University
An international star of the flute, Grammy nominee Carol Wincenc is the recipient of Lifetime Achievement Awards from the National Flute Association and the National Society of Arts and Letters. Highlights of the 2013-14 season include a gala concert commemorating her 25 years of teaching legacy at The Juilliard School, solo concerts in Canada, the U.S. and Europe, as well as performances with Trio Les Amies and the New York Woodwind Quintet. A muse to composers for the past 40 years, Wincenc has premiered and recorded works written for her by many of today's most prominent composers. The grand prize winner of the Walter W. Naumburg Solo Flute competition, she has appeared with the Chicago, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Detroit, St. Louis, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Houston and Seattle symphonies among many others, and the Mostly Mozart, Santa Fe, Spoleto, Caramoor, Music@Menlo, Yale/Norfolk and Marlboro music festivals. She has performed in all the major New York concert halls including Lincoln Center's "Great Performers" Series for four consecutive seasons.
Wincenc has given acclaimed performances with the London Symphony, the English and Stuttgart Chamber Orchestras and at numerous international music festivals. In great demand as a chamber musician, Ms. Wincenc has collaborated with the Guarneri, Emerson, Tokyo and Cleveland String Quartets and performed with such distinguished colleagues as Emanuel Ax, Yo-Yo Ma, Jesseye Norman, Joshua Bell, Bella Davidovich, Lukas Foss and Aaron Copland. As a champion of contemporary works, she has premiered and recorded Christopher Rouse's
Flute concerto with the Detroit Symphony and Henryk Gorecki's Concerto Cantata with the Warsaw Philharmonic.
Ms. Wincenc has recorded on the Decca, Telarc, Naxos, Nonesuch, Deutsche Grammophon, Hannsler, CRI, New World, D'Note, and Musical Heritage/Music Masters record labels, and is Professor of Flute at The Juilliard School and Stony Brook University.

Patti Wolf ~ Collaborative Pianist
Since being chosen at age nineteen as the youngest competitor of the 1985 Van Cliburn Competition, Patti Wolf has been in demand as a soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, and teacher. She has collaborated in recital with many of the world’s most distinguished musical artists, such as cellist Lynn Harrell, pianist Jon Kimura Parker, flutist Carol Wincenc, violinist Ilya Kaler, concertmasters Glenn Dicterow, Andrés Cárdenas, David Halen and Nina Bodnar, soprano Erin Wall, Chicago Symphony principal horn Dale Clevenger, and renowned German horn soloist and recording artist Hermann Baumann.
As a collaborative pianist, Ms. Wolf has been featured at International Brass Conferences in Chicago and Kansas City. She has performed or given master classes at the University of Michigan, Northwestern University, Westminster College, the Eastman School of Music, the University of Iowa, University of Houston, University of Texas-Austin, and the Juilliard School of Music. She was a regular performer on the Saint Louis Symphony’s Chamber Music Saint Louis and KFUO-FM’s long-running live radio concert series From the Garden—Live! Summer engagements have taken her to the Marrowstone Festival, the Cactus Pear Festival, Strings in the Mountains, and the Aspen Festival, where she worked as an accompanying fellow.
Ms. Wolf’s numerous awards and honors include the Kosciuzko Chopin Competition, the American Music Scholarship Association, the Artists’ Presentation Society, Music of the Americas, and the Yale Alumni Association Award. A scholarship student of Jane Allen at the Saint Louis Conservatory, she later studied with Joseph Kalichstein at the Juilliard School, where she received a Bachelor of Music in 1987. In 1989 she earned a Masters Degree from Yale University School of Music, working with Peter Frankl, Claude Frank, and Boris Berman. From 2001 to 2009 she was a collaborative staff pianist at the Shepherd School of Music, Rice University, performing a vast repertoire of over 200 recitals. Recently relocated to Saint Louis, Missouri, she maintains an active private studio and performs regularly with the Saint Louis Symphony and the Chamber Music Society of Saint Louis.
