First introduced by Sir Robert Macintosh and Sir Ivan Magill in the early 1940’s, the Laryngoscope has evolved since its inception.

Following the creation of Endotracheal Tubes, Laryngoscopes permit access to push the tongue back and provide light to allow visualization of the vocal cords for accurate placement of the airway.

Due to the recent issues involving CJD (prions), where decontamination of the blades could not be ensured, there remains a risk of cross infection. As a measure to combat the potential risk of cross-contamination, there has been a move towards Single-Use Blades. Recent studies have also shown that laryngoscope handles are a major source of cross-contamination, with few being sterilized as often as needed.1

The Classification of Laryngoscopes Laryngoscopes can be primarily classified into two categories, defined by their light source:

1. Standard Laryngoscopes Standard Laryngoscopes, also referred to as Conventional Laryngoscopes, have a light bulb incorporated into the blade, approximately 1/3 of the distance from the tip. The light bulb screws into position and is powered via an integral line that transfers the power from the source. The power source is located within the handle in the form of conventional batteries.

2. Fiber Optic LaryngoscopesThe major difference between Standard Laryngoscopes & Fiber Optic Laryngoscopes is the location of the bulb. In the Fiber Optic System, the bulb is housed within the handle with the light transmitted via an optic bundle.

The main advantage that this system presents is that it transmits light without transferring heat and thus eliminates the risk of burns within the patient’s oral cavity. There is also the added advantage of one-piece autoclaving.

BriteBlade Pro is Flexicare’s range of Single-Use Fiber Optic Blades designed for single patient use, which eliminates the risk of cross-contamination. They have a unique hinge design that prevents the folded blade from touching the handle. It has been demonstrated that single patient use blades are cost effective when compared to reusable blades.

Flexicare also provides Laryngoscopes for difficult intubations. The flexible blade system clears the tongue further than is possible with the conventional designed laryngoscopes to allow positive identification of the airway.

Fiber Optic Miller Blades The straight design with a shallow curve of the Miller Blade tip provides greater control in patients whose epiglottis is larger, as in pediatrics. The infant and neonatal miller blades are also available with a delivery port to provide supplementary oxygen during laryngoscopy.

Fiber Optic Macintosh Blades The curved design of the Macintosh Blade allows the tip to be guided to the epiglottic vallecula for direct visualization of the glottis while maintaining the tongue to the side for intubation.

The length of the nasal airway can be estimated by the distance from the patient’s nostril to the earlobe, or the angle of the jaw.

The nasal airway is best inserted when the patient is in the supine position. The airway should be lubricated with a water soluble lubricant prior to insertion.

Insert with the curve facing the opposing direction and follow the nasal passage while turning the nasopharyngeal airway through 180˚.

End-Tidal CO2 Monitoring & O2 Delivery CannulaThe Dual Nasal Cannula is designed to provide oxygen to both nostrils and also sample CO2 at the same time.

The patient’s expiratory flow will divert fresh gas away from the sampling nares.

Capnography and CO2 MonitoringMonitoring the patient’s breathing in emergency situations is of paramount importance. Delivering oxygen ensures the level of oxygen saturation in the blood is maintained, which is sometimes monitored and measured by a pulse oximeter. However, the pulse oximeter does not provide breath-by-breath patient ventilator status.

Capnography is the vital sign of ventilation. By tracking the patient’s expired CO2 clinicians can evaluate the ventilation condition of the patient during critical emergency situations and make the judgment to assess and treat the patient.

The Challenge Many patients become significantly hypoxic during gastrointestinal endoscopic

procedures.1 Following induced sedation during endoscopy, oxygen saturation

falls moderately in most patients and quite profoundly in some to dangerously

Dual Nasal Hoods

The unique Dual Nasal Hood with LuerSafe provides optional CO2 monitoring during dental procedures that utilize nitrous oxide or other forms of sedation.

Capnography and CO2 Monitoring Monitoring a patient’s breathing is of paramount importance. Capnography is the vital sign of ventilation. By tracking the patient’s expired CO2, clinicians can evaluate the ventilation condition of the patient during sedation and make the judgment to assess and treat the patient.

The Dual Nasal Hood is designed to provide desired gas to both nostrils and also sample CO2 at the same time. Quality CO2 waveforms are achieved as the patient’s expiratory flow will divert fresh gas away from the inhalation channel.

Unique LuerSafe PortDual Nasal Hoods feature Flexicare’s unique cap-less self-sealing LuerSafe port, which will only accept the correct corresponding color-coded LuerSafe monitoring line to be fitted to open the valve and provide uninterrupted flow to sample CO2 levels.

LuerSafe eliminates erroneous mis-connections to standard luer connections, ensuring a fail-safe connection to the monitoring port only.

Variable Concentration

All masks are supplied with knitted latex free straps. The knitted strap maintains its width when stretched, reducing the pressure on the patient’s skin and can protect the patient from pressure sores.

Nasal CannulasNasal Cannulas are used for their simplicity and patient convenience. There is entrainment of ambient air through the nostrils. The FiO2 achieved is proportional to: the flow rate of oxygen (1-6 l/mni); the patient’s tidal volume; inspiratory flow rate; and the volume of the nasal pharynx.

Non-Rebreathing MaskThe Non-Rebreathing Mask provides a high concentration of oxygen, while the reservoir bag allows for adequate oxygen to be available in order to meet unpredictable patient breathing patterns and tidal volumes.
