Immigrant Civic Engagement Learning Tour Meet at hotel lobby bar. Destination: Southwest Workers Union Co-sponsored with Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees Explore the growing cross-sector movement to promote immigrant civic participation and community-building efforts in San Antonio and Texas. First we’ll hear the impacts that colonialism, slavery and immigration have had on civic engagement as we drive past the Alamo. Then we will tour San Antonio murals that touch on the role of storytelling in community engagement as we head to our destination: the Southwest Workers Union. This event will provide a platform for peer learning with funding colleagues and an exchange with local organizations focused on how the area’s diverse immigrant population participates in democratic practice, solves community problems and develops their leaders. You’ll hear about the Texas Civic Engagement Table's efforts to facilitate collaboration among diverse local and statewide groups in order to advance immigrant integration and civic participation; and you’ll explore the strengths, challenges and community impact of emerging models for immigrant civic participation in this region.

Welcome to Texas, one of four majority-minority states and the fastest growing state in the nation. Along with its Southwest neighbors, this region of the country is ground zero for some of the most important policy battles of our day including immigration, affirmative action, criminal justice, civil and voting rights, and the economy. Yet despite its Texas-sized influence, voter participation rates here are the lowest in the country. This panel will explore the challenges and opportunities in the Southwest and how building local power in these fast-growing communities can change the course of the country.

Welcome and Announcements Deb Ross, FCCP Executive Director Can We Fix That? Protecting and Advancing Voting Rights Moderated by Geri Mannion, Carnegie Corporation of New York

Over the last two years, 19 states passed 25 laws that curbed voting rights and disproportionately affected minority and low-income voters, the elderly, students and people with disabilities. Compounded by widespread problems in our election system, this “war on voting” has now moved to the Supreme Court which is considering two of the most important voting cases in decades. With the nation’s attention focused on voting, President Obama established a new Presidential Commission to address voter registration and access, ballot design and contingency planning. But will it be enough? And how can advocates, voters, election officials and funders work together to prepare for the next election?
