Since early period, several areas in the Nusantara became important stop-over place where at the same time Da’wah to the people were carried out.

The tumultuous political situation, especially after the fall of Baghdad, increased migration of Muslim propagators to this area, some via India.

- There were already 6 Islamic kingdoms established in “Pulau Andalas” (Sumatra), namely:

Perlak, Samudra, Lamuri, Pasai, Fansur dan Barus.

- The people follows the Islamic jurisprudence school (madzhab) of Imam As-Syafi’i.

Malay Annals “Sejarah Melayu” records confirms - - Islam was brought to Pasai by a (muballigh) missionary called Pakir Muhammad via Gujerat (South India). The king of Pasai who first embrace Islam was “Merah SiluMerah Silu” who then adopted the Muslim name “al-Malikus-Salihal-Malikus-Salih” (meaning ‘the righteous king”).

As recorded in “Izhhar al-Haq” and “Tadzkirah Thabaqat Jam’u Sultan as-Salatin” - 173H (789M) - Islam first came to the Nusantara at Perlak in 173H (789CE) via a naval ship headed by a “Nakhoda Nakhoda KhalifahKhalifah”. Muslim as propagators of Islam developed such a good relationship with the locals, that in 225H (839CE) a second generation of this settler who inter-marrried with local princess was proclaimed by them as king and established an Islamic kingdom.

As recorded in “Izhhar al-Haq” and “Tadzkirah Thabaqat Jam’u Sultan as-Salatin” - 173H (789M) - He was a “Sayid Abdul AzizSayid Abdul Aziz”, prince borne from the marriage of a “Sayid Ali” (a Quraysh descent from Hijaz) with local princess, daughter of Meurah Perlak Makhdum Tansyuri by the name of “Syahir NuwiSyahir Nuwi”.

Maulana Ibrahim As-SamarkandiMaulana Ibrahim As-SamarkandiHe was successful in spreading Islam there and even the King of Champa, impressed by is noble akhlaq, married one of his princess to him. His children were educated to become Islamic scholars and propagators to succeed him in his mission. They were instrumental to the spreading of Islam to Java, Borneao and many other islands in the Malay Archipelago (Nusantara).

According to the “Tarsila”, Karimul Makhdum was the first to bring Islam to the Sulu and north Borneo. He was a Sayid Sayid Zainal ‘Alam Barakat ibn Jamaluddin al-Zainal ‘Alam Barakat ibn Jamaluddin al-HusseiniHusseini , also known as Tuan Syarif Aulia. He was none other than the father to Maulana Malik Ibrahim (Sunan Gerisek) whom he sent to Java at Gerisek to spread teaching of Islam.

1409M – Admiral Muhammad Cheng Ho Admiral Muhammad Cheng Ho (ZhengHe)(ZhengHe) visited Melaka. There were already Muslim traders / settlers from Arabia, India dan Persia – there. When the Sultan of Melaka embraced Islam, Melaka became a centre for the teaching and spread of Islam in the region, until it fell to the Portugese invasion.
