Ubiquitous InternetUbiquitous networks are one of the main aspects of the Future Internet since they ensure access to Internet services everywhere, even without pre-existing network infrastructures. Not only users’ devices but also objects and locations will be connected in a pervasive way to the Internet. These will become the providers of contents and services through the emerging paradigms of social networks and of the Internet of Things. There is a multitude of application fields: from smart cities to infomobility to energy efficiency and environmental protection.

Trustworthy and Secure Future Internet

The research activity has the aim of defining models, methodologies and tools regarding ICT security aspects with a focus on the Future Internet. Some of the most interesting application fields are: distributed environments, like Grid and Cloud, mobile devices such as smartphones and palmtops, social networks and e-health care.

Web Applications for the Future InternetThis research field studies the evolution of web technologies in all its forms: guidelines, recommendations, software and tools. Emphasis is on the application component of the research which aims to investigate problems, identify the best technological solutions, and design and develop user-friendly software tools. Research includes construction and visualization of Linked Data resources, applications of digital humanities, statistical analysis of social networks, extraction, manipulation and visualization of big data, e-Government services, interfaces and applications to support social integration and accessibility for everyone.

Internet GovernanceIncreasing attention is being paid to the future of Internet for the evolution and growth of end users worldwide and for the capacity of the network to support economic and social development on a global scale. On the one hand, the European Union recognizes universal access to the network. On the other hand, experts in the network ecosystem are concerned because Internet has its limits and one of these issues is represented by the current model of governance. The aims of this interdisciplinary research are to interpret and review the principles, regulations, decision-making and programmes related to the evolution and management of Internet.

IIT carries out activities of research, assessment, technological transfer and training in the field of Information and Communications Technologies and in the sector of computational sciences. The rapid growth of Internet, its services and applications, is unrelenting and opens up new and fascinating scenarios of still unexplored research and development.Internet is ever more widespread and pervasive also in new applications such as “Smart Cities and Communities”, constantly enhancing its strategic role for the social, cultural and economic growth of the whole of humanity. Within this context, IIT is naturally at the forefront and has its sights set on the Future Internet, both from a modellistic-algorithmic and from a technological-applicational point of view. In March 2013 the Organizational Support Unit (UOS) of IIT was constituted at the University of Calabria in Rende (Cosenza).

Taxonomies, Thesauri and Classification systemsThis activity designs and develops taxonomies, thesauri classification and indexing systems for digital documents. It also develops innovative methodologies for data coding. The activity is mainly carried out by the Organizational Support Unit (UOS) of IIT at the University of Calabria. The UOS acts as Italian representative of LOINC® the international standard for laboratory prescriptions and reports encoding.

Planning, development and monitoring of telematic networksIn addition to managing the network infrastructure and some services of the CNR Research Area in Pisa, the group is also involved in promoting new network technologies and services, such as IPv6, IP multicast, VoIP based on ENUM and on distributed authentication infrastructures. These activities are mainly at the service of the scientific community and public administration. The group also deals with the audiovisual documentation of research activities and public events.

Internet services and technological development

The group plans and develops innovative telematic applications for the Institute and, more in general, for CNR users, public administration and the private sector.Among its aims and tasks there is also technology transfer and training for CNR staff, Internet Service Providers and for Internet users in general. Furthermore, it carries out applied research projects in the field of ICT.
