Thank you to all our families for your support this term. We greatly appreciate your kind words, feedback and assis-tance with transitioning from home learning to regular schooling. Thank you for your assistance with pickups and drop offs and your monitoring of adult social distancing has been greatly appreciated. New Gross Motor Equipment

We have finally replaced the old Prep shed and replaced it with a brand new one. This also included new sturdy shelving and large containers to hold brand new gross motor equipment for students in Prep, Year 1, Year 2 and KindyLinQ children to use. This substantial cost was completely funded by a successful application for a Small Schools Grant.

What are gross motor skills?

Gross motor (physical) skills are those which require whole

body movement and which involve the large (core stabilising)

muscles of the body to perform everyday functions, such as

standing and walking, running and jumping, and sitting

upright at the table. They also includes eye-hand coordination

skills such as ball skills (throwing, catching, kicking) as well

as riding a bike or a scooter and swimming.

Why are gross motor skills important?

Gross motor skills are completed by using the larger muscles in the body to roll, sit up, crawl, walk, run, jump, leap, hop, skip and more. Regular participation in these types of physical activities has been associated with improved academic performance and important school day functions, such as attention and memory. Even a baby’s ability to sit up unsupported has a profound effect on their ability to learn about objects (Woods, 2013).

One of the greatest brain gains of exercise is the ability for physical activity to improve actual brain function by helping nerve cells to multiply, creating more connections for learning (Cotman, 2002; Ferris, 2007). Research has shown that an increase in physical activity has a significant positive effect on cognition, especially for early elementary and middle school students (Sibley, 2002). As an added bonus, being physically fit as a child may make you smarter for longer as you grow old. (Deary, 2006).

Happy Holidays

Once again, thank you for all your support during a very disjointed Term 2. Have a safe and relaxing holiday. I hope that some families get the opportunity to travel and go on holidays during the break. Term 3 resumes on Monday 13 July.

Changes to 2020 Show Holiday Dates in South East Region

The Redlands City Council has decided to keep their show date as Monday 10 August 2020.

The Gold Coast and Logan City Councils have taken the opportunity to move their 2020 Show Holiday to Friday 14 August 2020, in line with the change to the Ekka Show Holiday.

Reporting and Assessment

We will be providing a report card to all parents this

semester. The report will be modified to reflect the nature of

learning that has occurred this term and last term. (Learning

at school and Learning@Home. The report will look a little

different this semester to previous reports.

All state schools are required to report on four (4) areas this

semester. Three of these will be the same in all schools and

then the fourth area will be determined by the school.

English, Mathematics and Science will be compulsory across

the state and at Russell Island; the fourth area will be

different depending on the year level of the student.

Students in year Prep to Year 2 will receive a report in

Health. Years 3 to 6 students will receive a report in HASS.

In addition, two specialist-teaching areas of the Arts (Mrs

Flynn-Clark) and PE (Mr. Weller) will be reported on for all

classes from Prep to Year 6, as well as Health (Mrs

Cormack) in years 3 and 4.

The report will have a rating for these Key learning Areas and

a statement of the learning content for each area, which is

being reported on. There will be no rating for Effort or

Behaviour for Semester 1 Report Cards. One highly

individualised student comment will be at the end of your

child’s report.

These reports will be sent out to parents and carers in the

week 3 of Term 3.

A parent teacher interview is being tentatively scheduled for

week 10 of Term 3. More information will be in our newsletter,

as we are informed of the health situation and guidelines.

This semester we will be trialing a digital delivery of report

cards. Your child will bring an email update note home today,

please complete this and return as soon as possible. If you

do not receive this note, please contact the office.

School Opinion Surveys

Every year parents, students and staff are given the oppor-

tunity to provide feedback to the Department of Education

around their schooling experiences. Parents and Caregivers

are invited to participate in this year's School Opinion Survey

and have a say about schooling during the COVID-19

lockdown. You are also given the opportunity to provide

feedback about our school more generally.

Page 3: It isn’t the amount of time you spend some- where that ... · fit as a child may make you smarter for longer as you grow old. (Deary, 2006). Happy Holidays Once again, thank you

Participation in the survey is anonymous and you are encouraged to take this opportunity to have your say. The survey form

has been designed so that it can easily be completed on a computer or smartphone. The online survey will be available until

Friday, 17 July 2020, and should take less than five minutes to complete.

To access the survey, please click on the link below or copy and paste it into your web browser:

Parent survey – https://survey.qed.qld.gov.au/form/Parents-HaveYourSay

A random selection of students Years 3-6 during school time will complete the School Opinion Survey. Staff will also have

the opportunity to provide feedback on school processes.

Please contact the school if you have any questions about the survey.

Thank you for continued support and cooperation in making Russell Island State School a great school!

Warmest regards

Jayne and Leanne
