Let’s celebrate together in style! B ernie Sanders is the first Jew to win a presidential primary. Hillary Clinton has a Jewish son-in-law. Donald Trump has a Jewish daughter, a Jewish son-in-law, and a Jewish grandchild! Marco Rubio’s main backer is Jewish. Ted Cruz has many Jewish supporters and had a strong Hanukkah message. John Kasich defeated a Jewish congressman, Bob Shamansky when he was first elected to the House. Jeb Bush has a “Jewish leadership team,” and has been to a number of Passover Seders. Mike Bloomberg is considering a run and is quite Jewish. All of the above support Israel in varying degrees, having visited there many times. One even lived on a kibbutz. And so it goes. Like analyzing the lists of Nobel prizewinners, or Oscar nominees, or whatever other prestigious category of human achievement that exists, we are always trying to figure out the Jewish connection. American politics is no exception. This past year alone saw the publication of a minor bestseller entitled, “Lincoln and the Jews,” which listed a fascinating series of connections that the greatest American president had with American Jews. It’s amazing to see how extensive they were. In fact, some would go so far as to say that Lincoln himself was Jewish! Figuring out who is Jewish and what their Jewish connections are, is one of our favorite pastimes as Jews. But, as far as presidential candidates are concerned, should it matter? Should we care more about a future president's gender, ethnicity, identity or religion than we do about his or her policies? My hunch is that perhaps a generation or two ago, Jews thought about this more. Less so, now. Back then they were deeply fearful of an anti-Semitic backlash if such a figure had been deemed a failure or worse, corrupt. The fact that we could see two Jewish candidates for President (Sanders and Bloomberg, if he runs) without even a shrug of concern in the Jewish community speaks volumes of how far Jews have come in America in the last several decades. Even when Joe Lieberman ran as Al Gore’s running mate back in 2000, Lieberman’s Jewishness was an issue. This time around, the Jewish connection of any of the candidates barely ranks as a topic of conversation. And that’s a good thing. Because in the end, ethnicity and identity, while significant on some level, should not be determining factors in choosing a president. I could think of lots of other things that would be more important to consider. Take vision and leadership, for example. Intelligence and judgment. Empathy and understanding. Character and capacity. Skill and policies. I would add the ability to craft a good sentence with just a sprinkling of soul. The ability to inspire. Don’t get me wrong, I am very proud of the Jewish connections in all of the candidates. They are fascinating to point to out and sometimes even amusing. But the most significant thing about the candidates is not their Jewish connections; it’s how ultimately insignificant those Jewish connections have become. PASSOVER SHOPPING Listed on Page 4

Legacy Giving

In December, Mark Zuckerberg pledgedthat he and his wife would give 99% of hisFacebook shares to the Chan ZuckerbergInitiative. Previously, he donated $100 million toNewark Public Schools, and 18 million Facebookshares to the Silicon Valley CommunityFoundation as well as other major gifts.

Mark Zuckerberg, Warren Buffet and BillGates signed the Giving Pledge in which theypromised to donate to charity at least half of theirwealth over the course of time, and invited othersamong the wealthy to donate 50% or more oftheir wealth to charity.

These are examples of people who havebeen very successful in business and want to givea majority of their wealth to philanthropy eitherover their lives or upon their death. Not only that, through the Giving Pledge they are alsoencouraging the wealthy people of the world todo the same.

One, however, does not have to be wealthynor elderly to plan a legacy gift. A legacy gift tothe Temple, which may be a bequest or otherplanned gift, can help ensure that our children, grandchildren and generations to come will havethe same firm commitment to Judaism as ourancestors before us.

This past December, the Temple wasinvited to participate in the Life & LegacyProgram offered by the Jewish Federation in theHeart of New Jersey in conjunction with theHarold Grinspoon Foundation. This is a 4-yearprogram designed to educate, train, motivate andempower the Temple to engage members inconversations to establish legacy gifts, to increaseour community awareness of the power ofbequests and other legacy vehicles, and tointegrate legacy giving into the philanthropicculture of our Jewish community.

Since December, a committee consistingof David Brotman, Stuart Feinblatt, ZoltanKemeny, Marlene Herman, Rabbi Malomet,Stuart Mitnick, Mitchel Rosen, Roy Tanzman,Linda Tondow, Jerry Trub, and myself hasparticipated in one Federation training sessionand has been working on our plan in preparationfor our next training session in the beginning ofMarch. Following this session, we will begin toroll out our program. You will see literature, signs

and articles in the Kiruv. We will begin to haveconversations with members. This will be a longprocess, one which can’t be totally completed bythe small committee. I invite you, ourcommunity, to engage any member of thecommittee in a personal discussion of yourinterest in establishing a legacy gift.

March and April Happenings:

On March 12, we will recognize all of ourvolunteers with Volunteer Shabbat. Whether it isserving on a committee, baking deserts for specialevents, reading Torah on Shabbat and holidays, stuffing envelopes for a mailing or one of themany other ways that you help out, without yourefforts we would not have the programming andactivities that we all enjoy. Volunteers really makea difference. Thank you.

Due to the variances of the Jewishcalendar, this year the holidays will be close to thelatest they have ever been. Purim, which beginson Wednesday evening, March 23 will becelebrated here at the Temple. Bring the entirefamily for fun and to hear the Meghillah reading.Contact Carey Glass if you would like to read aportion of the Meghillah.

The second year of our Studio J youththeater group will culminate with theirperformance of Fools on Sunday, April 3. Last yearthe group’s performance of Only in America wasterrific and I know that this year will be nodifferent. Get your tickets early because I expectthat it will be a sell-out as it was last year.

Our annual Dinner Dance Gala will be onSunday, April 10. This year the Gala will be a funevening with a Latin theme and will be acelebration of the longevity of both the HighlandPark Conservative Temple and CongregationAnshe Emeth. As this is our major fundraiser ofthe year, I hope that everyone will participate byselling advertisements in our journal, attendingthe Gala, and bidding on the items in the silentauction. The food and music will be outstanding. But instead of attending by yourself, why notinvite your friends and put together a table.

Following the Gala you will have plenty oftime to start preparing for Pesach, which beginson Friday night, April 22 and goes through theend of the month concluding a busy two monthperiod. I look forward to greeting you at Yom Tovservices.

We wrote letters to soldiers andtalked about how much they really mean.Another notable event was our ice skatingextravaganza at Roosevelt Park! Holocaust Wall of Remembrance – In Memory of those who Perished in the Shoah

“TO EVERY PERSON THERE IS A NAME”Many of you may remember Congregation Anshe Emeth’s and Highland Park Conservative Temple & Center’s Holocaust

Remembrance Walls, prior to our merger and fire. For the last number of years we have been working on an appropriate and respectfulway to recreate such a Wall in our new building. We will be mounting a new memorial on the wall next to the Schwartzman Libraryand opposite the Legacy Room.

WE Baum, who designed all the other dedications in the building, has designed a memorial that will accomplish several goals: itwill serve as a lasting memorial to Shoah victims, provide opportunity to “add the person to the name,” and enhance Holocausteducation. The Memorial Wall will display the names of all the victims of the Shoah that were on the two shul's previous walls andwe will be able to add additional memorials. It will also contain a display screen where biographies and photos of the victims may beuploaded. A second phase of the project will give us the ability to provide historic information about the Holocaust.

In the coming months you will be receiving a brochure about this memorial and you will have the opportunity to list victims ofthe Shoah that were not included on the original walls. There will also be instructions on how to include bios and a photo. If youhad names listed on the previous walls, you will also be able to provide additional information.

We are very eager to finally be able to memorialize family members and other victims of the Shoah in this very fitting manner.

The HPCT-CAE Community is Happy to Welcome it’s Newest Members:

Jay and Karen Reinhard reside in Edison. They have a young daughter, Amanda and twin sons, Max and Sam. Karen is a social worker and Christopher is in real estatedevelopment.

Welcome New Members

Our Edison/Highland Park Jewish communityis coming together again to bring a unit ofdischarged IDF combat soldiers to ourcommunity in November 2016. They will takepart in the Peace of Mind program which helpsIDF combat veterans transition to civilian life.

Peace of Mind is an intervention programthat, as one soldier put it, “changes lives. It helps soldiers cope with the rest of their lives.Nearly two-thirds of participants have shown significant post-traumatic growth followingtheir participation in the program. IDF units of 15 soldiers from a high-risk combat unitwork with two therapists to process their emotions and begin healing.

The core of the program is being hosted by a Jewish community overseas during the mostintensive therapeutic work. The warmth from a Diaspora Jewish community gives soldiersa sense of love, support and purpose in defending the State of Israel on behalf ofinternational Jewry. Since the program’s inception, nearly 40 groups have been hosted inHolland, Italy, England, France, Canada and the United States.

The cost of the entire program is $60,000. The Edison/Highland Park Community ishalfway to goal. We need your help!

Tax deductible donations should be written to American Friends of Herzog Hospital and sentc/o Koenigson, 221 Washington Ave, Edison, NJ 08817. Donations can also be made online atwww.traumaweb.org. Look for the Peace of Mind tab and notate it should go to theEdison/Highland Park effort. Every dollar helps and we appreciate your support.

Above and Beyond is truly fortunate to have theexpertise and talent of so many of the Temple’smembers who selflessly volunteer their efforts toenhance our program. Todah Rabah to GittelFooterman, Marlene Herman, Yosefa Lebeau, andMark Wang for their recent and ongoingvolunteerism.

Our preschoolers celebrated Tu B'Shvat withgreat enthusiasm, with food (of course!), projects,

stories, songs, and a special Tu B'Shvat assemblywith Mrs. Herman. The children learned aboutall the good that we get from trees – wood andpaper, shade, fruit, animal habitats and oxygen.Mrs. Herman shared her amazing collection ofitems that come from trees, including realwooden clogs from Amsterdam, a beadednecklace made from olive pits, and a jacket madefrom paper! They learned about the differentparts of a tree, the importance of taking care oftrees and of planting new trees too.

We take great pride in our center's wellqualified and highly trained staff. All of our fulltime teachers are CPR and First Aid certified, andour entire staff receives regular ongoing trainingto be sure that the care at Above & Beyond is,well, ABOVE AND BEYOND all expectations!Special thanks to Mark Wang for lending his timeover and over again to train our staff in CPR andFirst Aid.

Our teachers recently attended two outstandingIn-Service sessions at the Center. The topic of

Speech and Language Development wasexplored with all of the head teachers by SpeechPathologist, Gittel Footerman, MS-CCC-SLP.We look forward to repeating this valuableworkshop for the remainder of the staff to attendas well, so that we can continue to encourageand support healthy language development forthe children at A&B. The infant and toddlerteachers benefitted from a very informativeworkshop with lactation consultant, YosefaLebeau, MD, IBCLC (and A&B parent too!).She reviewed a myriad of topics including:health benefits relating to breast feeding, safehandling of mother's milk, techniques for bottlefeeding nursing babies, weaning, and otherissues relevant to supporting nursing babies andtheir families in a child care environment.

At press time, we are eagerly anticipating our3rd Annual Rosh Chodesh Adar Family event toget us in the mood for Purim, with a costumeparty and dinner for all Above & Beyondfamilies on March 9th. Even in the middle ofwinter, A&B is the place to be!

Safety and Security CornerFrom time to time the Safety and Security Committee will post their suggestions in a Friday e-letter column as well

as in the Kiruv. The first bit of advice: Know all the exits in the Temple - there are many! Did you know there is an exitdoor in the stairwell across from the library? Also be sure to know the location of the Temple’s many fire alarms.

“I’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT YOU....”How often we say those words. Well I’m suggesting thatwhile thinking about someone is lovely, acting on thosethoughts can really make a big difference in someone’sday. So instead of just thinking, try making a call, sendingan email, or, best of all, send a card. When someone isrecuperating or homebound, getting something otherthan junk mail or a bill brings genuine cheer.

Often when we hear someone is ill or going

through a difficult time, we hesitate to call. We’re afraid

we might be bothering them. However, if you do call and

it’s not convenient for them or they’re not up to it, they’ll

tell you or they might not even pick up the phone. At least

they will know you were thinking of them ... that you

cared. – Nannette Cohen

Wednesday Evening, 23rd at 7:30p.m.—Traditional Reading of theMegillah for the whole family—bringnoisemakers, groggers, musicalinstruments; come dressed in

costumes of your own creation; enjoy the spiritof Purim through the Service, and celebrate withus this most engaging and joyous Yom Tov.Refreshments following.

Thursday, March 24th at 6:45 a.m. -Traditional Reading of the Megillah.

PURIM

The Jews ordained and took uponthemselves, and upon their generations, thatthese days of Purim should not cease fromamong the Jews, nor the memory of them perishfrom among their descendants—to observe thedays of Purim at their appropriate time. (Esther9:27-31)

This verse in Megillat Esther is the source ofthe festival of Purim, celebrating our redemptionfrom the hands of the wicked Haman. In a largersense, Purim is the festival of “joy and light,”celebrating not only the single event in the daysof Mordechai and Esther, but rather thecontinuous miracle of the Jewish body and soul.

THE OBSERVANCEOF PURIM,

THE FAST OF ESTHERThe 13th of Adar, Wednesday, March 23, is aFast Day to commemorate the fast proclaimedby Queen Esther, when advised by Mordechai ofHaman’s plans. Fasting was, and is, part of Jewishtradition in preparation of any serious problemor challenge. Fast begins at 5:33 a.m. Fast ends at6:44 p.m.

CELEBRATING PURIM—THE FOUR MITZVOT

1. Reading Megillat Esther. On theevening of Purim and on the next morning, theMegillah is read from a parchment scroll, chantedaccording to a special cantillation (melody) usedonly in the reading of the Book of Esther.

2. The Seuda of Purim. On the day ofPurim (so long as you begin anytime beforenightfall), we celebrate with a festive meal.

3. Shalach Manot. We also express our joyand gladness of the miracle of Purim by ShalachManot (sending portions) consisting of two typesof food to our friends. We remember, as wecelebrate our victory over the cruel Haman, that

we must depend on others if we are to survive insociety.

4. Matanot La’evyonim (Gifts to theNeedy). This is a mitzvah which requires us togive to at least two poor people, food or money, with which to celebrate the Mitzvot of Purim.

Purim is indeed a beautiful holiday—joyful, religious, yet full of humor, and responsibleirreverence. Make this Purim a special one withyour family in synagogue and at home.

CAN WE EVER FORGET THOSE WHOHAVE NO FRIENDS, RECEIVE NO GIFTS,AND HAVE LITTLE OF THEIR OWN—THE POOR IN OUR MIDST ARE TO BEREMEMBERED!

On Purim, as we celebrate our safety and victory,we must forever be cognizant of those lessfortunate whose celebration and joy isdiminished through the anguish of poverty andneed. Therefore, Purim invites us to celebrate, not only with family and friends, but also toextend our hand to the poor. We are commandedto give gifts to them, as well as to our friends.Any fund for the poor offers you the opportunityto fulfill this mitzvah.
