Previously, Food Safety and Quality Assurance (FSQA) was a certificate needed by 4-Hers to exhibit their livestock at the county and state fair. Iowa has made
the switch to Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA).
Required for any 4-Her showing pigs, beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, goats, rabbits or poultry.
YQCA promotes the development of a common framework for youth livestock quality assurance programs that will enhance the educational experience of
youth, improve the care of animals, and provide a higher level of food safety to consumers.
The YQCA curriculum is broken into four levels: Junior ages 8-11, Intermediate ages 12-14, Senior ages 15-18 and Young Adult ages 19-21. Three or four levels
of content focused on food safety, animal well-being and character are outlined for each level.
The online program includes three components for each topic (food safety, animal well-being, and character development): 1) knowledge builder, 2) skills lab
and 3) quiz for each content topic, and are designed specifically for each age group. To fulfill their year of training, youth will complete three of these online
modules.
The knowledge builder allows students to learn new information in an engaging, age-appropriate and interactive format. Students can read content, watch
videos, analyze pictures, and practice skills while progressing through a series of interactive content components.
Skills labs offer realistic situational opportunities for youth to apply the new knowledge gained in the knowledge builder. These labs take students through a
comprehensive journey of the content, requiring them to apply skills and make decisions resembling those they will face in real life.
The quiz is the final piece of the online learning experience, testing student’s overall knowledge of the content. Students can receive immediate feedback or
see their results at the conclusion of the quiz. A pass rate of 80% has been established with students being able to repeat the module if needed.
More information is to come, but feel free to contact us with questions you may have. The information is very similar, but just in a new format.
Barn Quilt Club
Challenge Sponsored by Percival Hometown Pride (PHP)
This year 4-H is teaming with the Percival Hometown Pride (PHP) to
bring to you our club challenge for the summer of 2018! We
challenge each club to create one barn quilt. The barn quilts that
each of the clubs make will be auctioned off at the Fremont
County Fair. That money will go to a fund to help develop a Barn
Quilt Trail in Fremont County. This is a great way for the whole
club to get involved in a citizenship project for Fremont County.
Guidelines are as follows:
1. PHP will provide the materials (plywood and paint) needed to
make ONE 4 ft x 4 ft barn quilt
No limit on number of members helping with the
project, but only materials for one barn quilt will be
provided
If a club wants to make more than one barn quilt, the
cost for additional materials will not be covered by PHP
Individuals interested in making a barn quilt are
encouraged to make one for an individual fair project,
but once again materials will not be provided by PHP
2. PHP can provide the paint (primary and secondary colors +
black and white)
You can mix the paints to create more colors (the
primary and secondary colors are seen best from a
distance)
The club can also purchase paint if desired
3. There are many designs/patterns to choose from online or
PHP has provided a few below but MUST have the patterns
approved by PHP and Extension Staff these will be
displayed for a barn quilt trail for all of Fremont County to see!
Does not have to be a 4-H pattern!
4. Have FUN, ENJOY the COLLABORATION, and SIGN
and DATE the BACK of the barn quilts!
5. This can be entered in the fair, by the group, in
multiple project areas: Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math – woodworking, Creative
Arts – visual arts, or Personal Development-
citizenship (just don’t forget to get all members
representing the project in Fair Entry along with
your other projects!)
6. Pattern must be approved (see #3) and barn quilts
need to be completed by July 10!
