What can an RD do for your team? �  Conduct nutritional

assessments to determine nutritional risk of a patient including nutrition status prior to admission

�  Includes: �  Evaluating signs and

symptoms of malnutrition

�  Prior wt loss, gain or stability

�  Wt loss during admission

�  Provide recommendations for nutrition support including enteral and parenteral

�  Monitor �  Tolerance �  Evaluate amount of

intake �  Evaluate any

medication interactions

�  Provide interventions to assist in the nutritional status of the patient

What can an RD do for your team? Cont. � Provide nutrition education, when

appropriate � Provide appropriate nutrition

supplements if needed � Assist with recommendations for GI

symptoms including diarrhea, constipation, nausea or vomiting

Main Goal of the RD in the ICU

�  Assist in providing adequate nutrition through PO intake and/or nutrition support to aid in recovery and help shorten length of stay.
