Scope DefinitionDWG Agreement Forms Basis for Sharing

• 2004 DWG Sharing Agreement is basis for defining US diagnostic share at 16%

– Features ‘port-based’ repackaging - different arrangement of diagnostics from 2001

– Also places responsibility for integration of diagnostics with plug providers

– Revision underway to accommodate India -- Not yet fully endorsed

• When compared with 2001 Basis for determining ITER ‘credit’, some scope ambiguity exists, e.g.

– DWG added scope for MSE (2 vs 1 view) and for plug integration relative to 2001 Design

– US scope/credit may change to accommodate India

• New procurement arrangements, incorporating ‘port-based packaging’ need to be negotiated to remove ambiguity.

• USIPO will not be able to place large design contracts until ambiguities are better resolved.

Diagnostic Front-End Integration

• Design constraints– Intermingling of numerous

labyrinths, many with precision optics

– Provide access while limiting neutron streaming

– Provide attachments and cooling to blanket shield modules

• Plug E3 is a US responsibility (DWG Sharing Agreement)– Many other diagnostics need to be integrated into plug E3

> 2 visible/IR camera views (EU) 2 edge CXRS views (RF) 2 H arrays (RF) X-ray crystal views (possible) (??)

• The division of integration design responsibility between the IT and the parties has not been fully negotiated.

Development of Radial Diagnostic Cassettes

• Radial cassettes may make integration and testing easier.

• May also make maintenance easier.

Central Tube Development for Upper Ports

• Metal seal, removable back plate gives access to central tubes.

• Back plate has only windows. “Hard” feedthrus on side panels

Developing Neutronics Capability with ATILLA

• ATILLA, a discrete-ordinates, radiation transport code produced by Transpire, Inc., is being benchmarked for use on ITER.

• In the US, this work is a joint PPPL/UCLA effort well connected to IO and EU efforts. (See Talk by R. Feder later today)

• Potentially essential tool for qualifying diagnostic labyrinth designs.

Assessment Studies

• For the US instrument development, near-term priorities were presented to the community and widely distributed last Spring.

• Priorities stressed better definition of instrument front-end configurations, performance assessments, consideration of alternate approaches and tool development.

• ~ 40 discussions with experts concerning these priority issues and relevant capabilities were documented.

• Awards for a total of 14 studies (including 2 cost studies) were made in summer and fall.

• Results will be presented at this meeting.

• All studies are completed or nearing completion 75% of reports have been submitted.

• Final reports will be placed on ITER IDM system.

Next Round of Studies

• Large procurements to design and fabricate US ITER diagnostics will begin in FY08.

• To advance front-end design and integration, there will be a second round of studies, beginning this Summer.

• Plan discussions over the next month regarding new design tasks and potential R&D areas.

– These will be documented as before in ‘Records of Discussion’.

• As designs become better defined, also plan to fund costing studies to improve confidence as Project Cost Baseline is established.

Schedule/Milestones

• A prerequisite for major diagnostic design effort is the renegotiation of new procurement arrangements to resolve existing scope ambiguities and clarify stakeholder roles.

• Definition of mutually agreeable integration of front-end components within the plugs will facilitate many parallel detailed design efforts.

• FY2014 delivery of qualified port plugs is consistent with top level IO schedule

– Detailed plan will likely feature plug delivery phased over a multi-year period.
