EDITORIAL TEAM

Editor-in-Chief:Hussain Rasool

Editor:Andrew Rodrigues

Creative Director:Manayel Al Ameer

I hope you’ve had a blessed month of Ramadan and a happy and relaxing Eid holiday spent with your loved ones. The time away provides an opportunity for us to reflect personally and professionally, returning with renewed energy, ready to tackle the 2nd half of 2017. We are transforming ourselves in a world that is transforming. This opportunity for reflectionandpositivechange is very rarewithinan organisation’s lifecycle. We are very fortunate to have this opportunity and are in the midst of our Vision 2020 Transformation Plan to ensure YBA Kanoo’s continued success.

You, colleagues, are the heart of the transformation. We must embed a culture of accountability, collaboration and innovation. Key Performance Indicators have been set across the Group. Our people, along with the new infrastructure which is currently being implemented, will ensure that we achieve our collective goal. Digitalisation of the business will allow greater visibility, quality and control. We cannot control customer’s decisions, butwecan influence theirbehaviour throughouractions. It is our collective responsibility to be ‘lean and mean’ and send the right messages to the market.

As we embark on this journey, we will open up a world of opportunity which we can capitalise on together if we are innovative, analytical, risk-driven and proactively anticipate opportunities and risks. During the recent ‘Quarterly Business Update’ we invited all managers to analyse and understand the current group performance, all managers must focus on their top line. We are standardising our monthly information systems which will allow greater transparency on our achievements. Revenue by country is important as each country has its own market specificity. We need to optimise ourresources as a Group. Another item covered on the Business Update was Value Added Tax (VAT). You will be hearing more about the changes required over the next few months; we should all be aware of these new regulations as they affect the way we do business moving forward.

I am pleased to report that all Vision 2020 Workstreams are progressing well; it is critical that we do not allow the momentum to slowdown. We can achieve Vision 2020 by working together across divisions; and by being committed to delivering sustainable excellence. As we make our vision a reality, we will become a ‘partner of choice’ within the market. This will be achieved by focusing on compliance as well as engaging our customers and collaborating with them to truly understand their needs and offer them innovative solutions.

In the last newsletter, I invited you all to take on the challenge and “BECOME AGENTS OF CHANGE”. I am pleased to share the views of two of our talented colleagues, Ms Firdous Sheikh and Mr Waqar Waheed; who responded and tell us more about how they are working to achieve Vision 2020.

Remember, no matter how big the challenges ahead are, trust me – the rewards are much bigger. I invite you all to take part in this positive change that we are working hard towards because, together, we can achieve much more rather than working alone.

With best regards,

Dr Patrick ChenelGroupChiefExecutiveOfficer

I first joined YBA Kanoo in June 2009 as Sea Freight Operations Executive. Prior to that, I have worked with Inchcape Logistics as Business Development Executive.

I currently handle multiple roles in Kanoo Logistics. Most prominent being Business Development and Sea Freight Exports Supervisor. I also head the Project Logistics for Kanoo Logistics Bahrain as well as help facilitate the commercial tenders.

incidents or stories and how Logistics connects the world. It is a diverse profession with a lot of opportunities for growth not just in Bahrain but worldwide. Every company uses logistics in one way or the other. I think, I was fascinated by this from early childhood, but it wasn’t until Istartedworkinginthisfieldthatmademefallinlovewiththe profession.

There is never a dull day at work. You are faced with multiplechallenges, intheofficeaswellaswhenyouareinvolved in ground operations. I guess, it was these varied opportunities and challenges that got me hooked to the profession. Let’s just say it’s not a profession for the faint-hearted.

With the introduction of “Vision 2020” strategy in the organisation, the difference I see in the company and for our division is that we have seen YBA Kanoo changing and expanding by using its powerful name and history to integrate into the market. Being one of the oldest in the region, we have extensive expertise which gives us an added advantage over others. I have personally seen the interest in divisions to work together and the active involvement of the management to meet its goal.

Previously, even in Kanoo Logistics, we have worked as separate branches, each with a different name, working to only benefit themselves. Now we are all under theumbrella of ‘One Kanoo’ and collectively known as Kanoo Logistics. We function as one division looking for opportunitiestobenefitnotjustourselvesbutthewholeof YBA Kanoo. We are slowly imprinting the YBA Kanoo emblem, if not globally but regionally together.

The benefit through my contribution is mutual. I haveseen Kanoo Logistics grow through the years and I have equally grown along with it both professionally and personally. My main contribution to Kanoo Logistics has beenmyexperience, bothonandofffield.Ihaveextensivecommercial and technical knowledge which helps me to meet the customer requirements not just by offering better services but also by providing solutions, which are financiallyandoperationallybeneficial totheclient.Thiscreates a loyal and sustaining customer base making us the Logistics leaders in the market.

With the company’s new strategy initiatives, I am looking forward to seeing YBA Kanoo emerge as the regional leader and be proud to be a contributor to that. My only suggestion would be to maintain the strategy and not to deviate from it. There will be many challenges and obstaclesbuttogether,Iamconfident, wecansucceed.

The challenges at workplace and how I overcome them? Like every organization, we have had our fair share of problems: from picking the right kind of person for the right task to not being able to function as a team. We conduct regular meetings. This helps to minimise failures as well as define SOPs and meet KPIs. We still face multiplechallenges every day, whether it’s from operational prospect, overloaded individuals or from client’s point of view. My motto has always been the same, it’s better to

I think every woman is a role model in herself, whether it’s a mother, sister, housewife or daughter. The strength of a woman can be seen in everyday life doing everyday tasks from home-making to wearing helmets at Port sites. History has proven time and again that we have always hadtofightforourplaceandrights.Butnowwedoseewomen multitasking, leaving their impressions in every field and being leaders. There is hardly anything that awoman cannot do, and the best part is, we women do it in style.

I would like to give my colleagues an inspiring message and that it’s been wonderful working with all of them. Every person makes a difference in the organisation and together we bring the change. Every job is a self-portrait of the person who does it, so do it to the best of your ability. Be an inspiration to others in your own way.

If I look ahead 10 years from now, my professional ambition would be to being the Regional Head of Project Logistics or being part of the corporate commercial team management in our organisation.

I’m a very active person outside of my work and my hobby is that I like to keep myself busy. Most of the days, it’s some sort of outdoor sports like football, badminton or swimming. I also love travelling, adventure sports, reading, playing PS4. If all else fails, it’s heading to the beach with my family and friends.

Interview:Mr. Waqar WaheedCommercial Manager of Power & Integrated Projects Co. Ltd. (PIPCO) – Jeddah

I have been working and living in the GCC since 1990 (Saudi - 23years and UAE - 3years). I began my career as a sales executive for commercial vehicles, construction & earth-moving machinery and lifting equipment. I have worked with leading dealership companies/agencies of trucks and heavy equipment.

I first joined YBA Kanoo in June 2008 as Regional Manager in Machinery-WP. In March 2014, I was transferred to PIPCO to develop new EPC and O&M contracts. I am grateful to YBA Kanoo management, the Kanoo family and the P&IP management for giving me this valuable opportunity to be featured in this newsletter.

The Company’s Vision 2020 and setting ”One Kanoo” as its core purpose to unify the group has had a positive impact on our colleagues, as we all are excited to be part of this unified group where everyone gets the opportunity to extend their working relationship beyond their department and regions.

Since 2014, my job was to win projects for PIPCO. I won quite a few deals with Nijhuis Netherlands for some contracts in Saudi. Our team did well in the execution of those projects. Thus, we won a 3-year contract with O&M. So, I’m glad it’s a win

within my team rather than division because of my actions.

I stopped spending time on activities and proposals that did not add value, as these could not be executed and extended my support further down the line. I have always been shifting my focus on customer needs and provide solutions to their problems, which in turn created better opportunities and relationship with them resulting in long term deals.

I am gradually embracing and exploring the new digital tools, gadgets and software that are made available to us. The digitalization program creates better utilisation of resources especially with the migration of emails to Office365, Windows 10, Skype for Business, OneDrive and advancements of digital technology.

After working for so many years in the Machinery business, I have gradually integrated and adjusted to the changing business landscape, such as my new role as commercial manager of PIPCO and I am focusing on customer relations with the support of team members and management. This move has positively carried our business forward in terms of improving and growing our market coverage, as I have seen improvements taking place. Understanding the implementation of ITQAN strategy along with the motivational incentive schemes for staff will enhance our market coverage and we are positive that we will grow our revenue by the end of year 2017.

We are proud to acknowledge that we have broken down a country barrier within our division. With our new project ACC7 Rabigh in association with MAN Germany, we have placed the high value order of over SR5 millions for Kanoo Engineering Dubai and have hired the services of TCC. We are also negotiating with Kanoo Security for the supply and installation of CCTV system for this project.

I see opportunities in the company’s transformation process with respect to managing and planning of Machinery business, Power Projects Construction management, Operation and Maintenance contracts, etc. I consider these as challenges and opportunities for growth to utilise and test our experience, attitude and skills. I have analysed this situation by looking at the facts and have selected the best approach by creating a plan of action and tackling the situation.

The value-adding tasks become easier when we understand the difference between “Being busy” and “Being effective”. It is easy to focus on value adding or new tasks, as I would review and determine to eliminate or delegate unimportant and low value tasks and replace them with value-added ones.

In year 2020 I would like to see YBA Kanoo celebrating the achievements of vision 2020 and announcing Vision 2030 plan. My objective for the company is to achieve “One Kanoo” goal under Vision 2020 by executing the transformation plan and make Kanoo the best choice for their partners, principals and employees.

KANOO SHIPPING DAMMAMACHIEVEMENT WITH VESSEL BROKERAGE

Kanoo Shipping Dammam successfully completed their first ever Ship Chartering and Brokerage services in the month of April, 2017. Joint effort by Sales and Liner Manager, Mr. Abid Khokhar and Operations team headed by Mr. Nasir Siddiqui (Operations Manager-Dammam) with active involvement of the top management helped Kanoo Shipping achieve this milestone.

Brokerage isn’t part of Shipping’s daily routine ops, instead its specialised activity requires keen aptitude to carefully manage every chartering aspect during negotiations. However, with firm commitment tobreak this barrier and involve Shipping with this non-conventional activity, the team worked hard to ensure that they succeeded in their endeavour.

During the routine ops, Shipping do receive a few such enquiries throwing brokerage opportunities, however, there are numerous brokers who work exclusively on such enquiries at any given point in time. One such enquiry to export 20,000 MT of Mill Scale to Far East destination, from one of old customers, motivated Shipping to work out a solution for them. Mr. Siddiqui who is heading Dammam operations took up the challenge and utilised his erstwhile experience in Ship Chartering to handle this consignment. Our endeavour, with assistance from our China representative, Mr. David Lee, helped us reach Cosco Shipping Specialised Carrier Co., Ltd., who were able to provide a suitable

vessel for this shipment. However, as always, biggest challenge remained to get all the stakeholders to mutually agree on the T&Cs. This was successfully achieved after quite a bit of effort from Shipping team members.

This success adds rich experience and enhances Shipping reputation, certainly along with earning of brokerage fee and agency appointment from Cosco Shipping. We were appointed as agents by both Charterer as well as the Owner of handy size vessel MV Le Tong at King Abdul Aziz Port, Dammam. Vessel and cargo ops completed to both owner’s and charterer’s satisfaction, with professional contribution from all members, including Dammam Port team, and vessel sailed out on 28th April’17.

LAUNCH OF NEW LINER SHIPPING SYSTEM

RESCUE OPERATIONS

AT JEDDAH

ITQAN NEWS 2017 | GROUP NEWS 25

Built on world-class IT facilities and global agency systems, Kanoo Shipping has grown into one of the largest regional shipping agencies in theMiddleEast. Handing its firstvessel in 1911, it is now assisting over 17,000 ship calls a year through a professional network that covers all ports from the Suez Canal, to Sri Lanka and East/South Africa.

In line with YBA Kanoo’s Vision 2020 digitalisation strategy, Kanoo Shipping has recently reached a significantmilestone with the launch of its new state-of-the-art Liner Shipping System. The new system replaces YBA Kanoo’s legacy system which has served our Shipping operations for over 25 years. This will have a major impact on the productivityandefficiencyofourbusinessoperations.

On 9th May 2017, one of the Regent Seven Seas Cruises ships, Seven Seas Voyager was on scheduled route to Safaga -Egypt from Salalah-Oman when a passenger complained of grave medical problem. This led the ship divert to the nearest rendezvous point outside Jeddah waters in the Red Sea.

The features of this new system (name to be announced soon) include centralised state-of-the-art web-based and comprehensive sea import and export system with ease of access and high availability. The scalable system grows with any increase in its shipping business operations in the future. It is fully automated and integrated with external third party entities including principals, terminal contractors, port and customs authorities. The system is currently used in many regions where VAT is already applicable. Mobility is a key feature in this new system which supports multiple handheld smartphones and tablets. It works as a powerful Business Intelligence and has reporting capabilities.

The YBA Kanoo management is very pleased on this milestone and appreciates the fact that it would not have been achieved without the joint efforts of the project team comprising of Shipping Operations, Shipping Divisional Finance and IT.

The doctors onboard the vessel recognised that the passenger needed urgent professional medical care when Kanoo’s professional assistance was sought after for this critical mission through our USA representative. Our team in KSA was alerted and Mr. Abdullah Al Biladi (Regional Shipping Manager –WP, Kanoo Shipping - Saudi Arabia) took charge of this mission. His actions involved swift and efficientcoordinationamongstvariousparties, includingPort authorities and Rescue Coordination Center (RCC).

Uponfinalisingthecoordinatesforairliftingthepassengerand his wife, a helicopter was dispatched by RCC at 2119 hrs and by 2230 hrs, the evacuation operation was swiftly completed.

Parallel arrangements were being readied for land transport to hospital. Soon both the passenger and his wife landed at the base and they were heading to the International Medical Center (IMC) Hospital, Jeddah.

The passenger was provided with urgent medical attention andafteraboutthreedaysofcare, doctorsconfirmedhimwell and hearty. Mr. Biladi visited the hospital regularly to ensure everything remained in order for best possible treatment and utmost care of the patient.

Having recovered completely, on 12th May 2017, the passenger was discharged from IMC. The same day he andhiswifeboardedaflight toAmman,Jordan, wherethey joined their cruise again.

UNRAVELINGTHE OIL CONUNDRUM

In its recent edition of World Economic Outlook, the IMF sharply downgraded its 2017 growth estimates for most GCC countries. The fund cited the implementation of the OPEC supply cut deal aimed at propping up oil prices as the key rationale behind the revision. The IMF has pegged the GCC region’s economic growth in 2017 at 0.9% compared with its previous estimate of 3.0%. It slashed its GDP forecast for the UAE (1.5%), Saudi Arabia (0.4%), Kuwait (-0.2%) and Oman (1.0%) in view of the probable impact of the agreed supply cuts and volatility in oil prices. The fund’s previous estimates were: UAE (2.5%), Saudi Arabia (0.4%), Kuwait (2.6%) and Oman (2.6%). IMF also raised Bahrain’s growth forecast for 2017 to 2.3%, higher than previously estimated 1.8% growth.

In May KSA, adopted the text of the GCC UnifiedAgreement on value-added tax (VAT). In 2016, GCC leaders had approved a 5% VAT on goods and services, to diversify the region’s dependence on oil & gas for the bulk of government revenue, particularly in light of the structural slump in oil prices since mid-2014. Successful implementation of the VAT framework is expected to help GCC economies reduce their oil dependence for revenue and ease fiscal deficit concerns.

Also in May, OPEC and non-OPEC nations recommended extending the reduction in oil supply by nine months. Although speculation was for deeper production cuts, the cut remained at 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd) However, a slower-than expected drop in surplus inventory failed to stabilize oil prices at a sustainable level and any increase has resulted almost instantly in higher output by fracking producers in the US. Oil prices have declined by roughly 70 percent since peaking in the middle of 2014 and the US oil rig count--a common measure of drilling activity--peaked in late 2014 and has since declined by about 60 percent. Yet U.S. production of crude oil continued rising until the middle of 2015 and has since fallen by only 6 percent from its peak.

The US Federal Reserve analyzed this conundrum and states the main driver of this greater rig efficiency isthe adoption of ‘pad drilling’ technology whereby a rig can drill multiple wells from the same spot without the need for expensive and time-consuming disassembly, relocation, and reassembly. Additionally, each well has become much larger, as the average well length has doubled from roughly 1.5 km to 3 km.

Further driving this performance is cost of production. The first typeof cost, referred to as "cash costs", includes the costs of operating a lease (such as pumping, equipment rental, servicing, and materials) as well as administrative costs and per-barrel taxes. These can be thought of as the average per-barrel cost of ongoing production at existing wells. Data suggests this average is about $14 - $18 per barrel, representing both aggressive cost-reductioneffortsbyfirmsandthegeneralindustrycostequilibriums. With transportation costs ranging from $5 - $10 (depending on region and resources), the data suggestthatformanyfirmsthecostofoperatingexistingwells is still somewhat below the current oil spot price. Therefore, at the margin, production from an existing wellisprofitablesolongaspricescancovercashcostsand transportation expenses.

The second cost measure is the long-cycle breakeven, an estimate of the oil price that would make new drilling profitable.Thelong-cyclebreakevencanbethoughtofas the cost that is most relevant to long-term production growth. As with cash costs, average costs have fallen significantly since 2014. The previous breakeven costof $60 - $80perbarrel is nowsignificantly lower, withBloomberg Intelligence providing estimates for some regions that go as low as the mid-$20 range.

In summary, the lack of a large production response to falling prices is due primarily to both rapid productivity gains and steadily falling costs of drilling and production. Additionally, aggressive reallocation efforts by firmshave provided further boosts to aggregate productivity. While some of the factors boosting production--such as reallocation and labor hoarding--are likely to be temporary, other factors represent permanent improvements in exploration and drilling methods. These productivity improvements have led to considerable declines in cash costs for operating wells, and in breakeven thresholds for new wells. These costs may yet fall further.

An industry that for decades was dominated by a handful of multinational corporations and state-owned oil companies is increasingly being disrupted by thousands of smaller companies and investors. In effect, US and eventually global, fracking producers are now effectively swing producers that can be expected to leave oil prices in a range: unfortunately, this range is projected to be below GCC governments’ requirements and the negative effect will continue to flow through local economies, absent serious diversification and growth from non-oil sectors.
