The Itron FC200 is a rugged handheld computer designed for data collection on remote sites. This document will
explain how to configure the Itron and the eSAM modem to function together reliably.
To follow this guide you will need an FC200, an eSAM modem, a SIM card and a computer with an Ethernet jack.
If you have any queries regarding the eSAM, please contact Intercel technical support at [email protected].

This guide will walk you through configuring your eSAM modem to work with the FC200.
1. Use your web browser to connect to the eSAM. By default, this can be done by connecting your computer to
the eSAM’s Ethernet port and entering the IP Address http://192.168.1.1 into your web browser. You should
be presented with the screen below
2. Log into the eSAM. The default login details are:
Username: admin
Password: admin
(You should change these details for security reasons.)
4
3. Once logged in, you must change the gateway IP address of the eSAM to match the IP Address range of the
FC200. The IP of the FC200 cannot be changed.
From 192.168.8.1
To 192.168.1.1
Open the Network > LAN screen and change the IP1 value to 192.168.1.1/24
Press Save. Now, power cycle the eSAM and wait for the changes to take effect.
4. Once the eSAM has restarted it have the IP Address 192.168.1.1. Please enter this IP Address into your web
browser and log back in.
5
5. Now we must configure the DHCP range of the eSAM. When Ethernet devices, like the FC200, connect to the
modem they will be assigned an IP address from within this range. In this case, the FC200 requires us to
enter this range manually.
Open the Network > DHCP Server screen and set the IP Pool to Custom. Enter a start address of
192.168.1.20 and an end address of 192.168.1.150
Press save once complete.
6. Next, we assign a port forwarding rule. This will direct network traffic from the eSAM to the FC200. We know
the FC200 uses port 5001, so will forward this port specifically.
Open the Forward > NAT window.
Press the ‘Add’ button to add a new rule
6
Enter the following settings for our port forwarding rule:
Protocol: All Original Address Type: interface Interface: modem Original Port: 5001 Mapping Address 192.168.1.20 Mapping Port: 5001
Press the Save button, and this rule will now appear in the forwarding table
7
7. Next, we should assign the APN information for the SIM card. These settings must match those provided by your mobile ISP, or the SIM card will not function properly.
Open the ‘Network > Modem’ Window
Select ‘Mod’ to modify your current Modem Settings
Enter the APN Provided by your mobile provider, and the Username and Password if required by your ISP.
Press ‘Save’ once complete.
8
8. Open the Status > Modem screen and confirm that the modem has connected to the internet successfully.
Please note that in areas of poor reception, or when using a VPN-enabled SIM card, it may take a minute for the modem to connect to the cellular network. If you encounter any difficulties, please contact technical support at [email protected]

This part of the guide will walk you through configuring the FC200.
1. Open the Windows OS of the FC200
2. Navigate to Start > Settings > Network/Dial-up
10
3. Select the connection PCI-SMSC111, this is the interface we will use to set the IP Address for the FC200,
Assign a static IP to the FC200. This will ensure that the IP of the FC200 will not change, and so the port
forwarding rule will remain effective.
IP Address: 192.168.1.20
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
11
4. Click OK to save the settings.
When the battery is disconnected the IP address is not retained. In this case the FC200 cannot run out of
battery or power down to a flat battery.
5. Once completed the connection between the eSAM and FC200 handheld will be reliable. We can now upload
data and test the connection.
