Inah Patrizia is a popular choice for front acts of many Filipino events as well as celebrity entertainers like Jose Mari Chan, Nora Aunor, Gary Valenci-ano, Martin Nievera, Pops Fernandez, Sharon Cuneta, Arnel Pineda, Regine Velasquez, Aiai de las Alas, Lani Mis-alucha, Basil Valdez, Randy Santiago... and these are just to name a few. Just recently, she was crowned the grand champion in the Asian Canadian Talent Search competition where she compet-ed and bested equally-talented contes-tants from Asian-Canadian community.

Young as she was, her ability to capture people’s interest when she belches out a tune was never diminished. Now, as she grow into a more pronounced person-ality, her destiny becomes clear – to show the world what she’s made of on stage. Starworx Media Entertainment & Productions is a young, highly creative event and production management outfit in

the Filipino community in Toronto dedicated to producing and line producing conceptualized thematic shows and

events.

It has produced and line produced shows through Axcess Media Canada featuring various local performers. Among its

past productions includes the first major solo concert of Josie de Leon titled “First Time@25” showcasing the songs of

Vehnee Saturno, “The Journey: Music of Cecille Azarcon” and “Sine Sine Musika,” both featured various local

performers, to name a few. On event management, it managed and implemented the production of an annual event

called “Pinoy Fiesta,” a two-day interactive event showcasing the many traditions in celebrating fiesta the Filipino way

which started in 2007.

Butch Miraflor, musical director par excellence, composer, musical arranger, and events

organizer, is that familiar face you see on GMA-7ʼs Mel & Joey, Sis, Mastershowman

Presents and Bubble Gang; on ABS-CBNʼs Homeboy, Pilipinas Win Na Win and several

reality shows (PBB, PDA and SCQ); on QTVʼs Moms and Gandang Ricky Reyes; on

ABC5ʼs Willing Willie (now Wiltime Bigtime).

Having established an untarnished name to himself and with plenty of experience, he is

undoubtedly one of the most sought-after musical director for television, live concerts,

and stage musicals.

GMA-7ʼs long-running RSVP, ABC5ʼs P.O.P.S. and Sing-Galing, ABS-CBNʼs The Sharon

An advertising practitioner by profession and a production person by passion. Even

before he became an advertising practitioner, he had been involved in stage productions

doing acting. He had also written short stories in various “komiks” publication in the

Philippines. From then on, he had ventured to directing plays, concerts, fashion shows as

well as some TV productions and independent films. He also conducts acting and

production workshops.

His training in stage and TV productions had been his biggest influence in mounting and

directing any kind of shows. As much as possible, he tries to combine all these creative

experiences to be able to come up with an exciting and visually enticing show that will

satisfy his audiences.

Among the shows that he directed are Josie Sings Saturno: First Time@25, The Journey:

Music of Cecille Azarcon, Sine Sine Musika, Nora Aunor Canada Tour, to name a few. He

also conceptualized and handled events like Pinoy Fiesta and Pasko Sa Toronto.

Q: Were you born here in Canada?A: No, I was born in Angeles City, Pampanga.

Q: How old were you when you came to Canada?A: I was one year old when I came.

Q: Do you speak any other language than English?A: I do speak Kapampangan and Tagalog fluently.

Q: How do you find your hometown when you were there for a visit in 2008?A: It’s great! It’s so nice just going everywhere and all you hear is Kapampangan... I find it very, very comforting. I just feel very at home because everywhere you go, there is a Filipino.

Q: Anything in particular that you liked during your stay?A: I liked the food like fishballs and ice cream that they sell in carts inside the mall. I also like the jeep and the tricycle.

Q: When did you start singing?A: I started on stage when I was 10 but I hear my mom telling stories to people that I was 2 or 3 years old doing karaoke. I couldn’t read but was singing “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion... My very first show was with Jose Mari Chan singing the song, “Sing Me Your Song Again Daddy...” Since then, other producers who have seen me at the show contacted my mom and I got invited to perform everywhere.

Q: How did you feel when you first did the act for Jose Mari Chan?A: I was very, very nervous. Practicing with the magic mic was almost every day just to make sure that I had it right... Back then, it wasn’t the easiest song for me because it was not my kind of music.

Q: Which school do you go to?A: I go to Iona Catholic Secondary School since Grade 9. It’s a little further but I go there for their Vocal Program... Every semester, I have a vocal course. I have been training privately but I have the training of the history, theory, composition, performance and almost everything. At school, it’s more of jazz, musical theatre and classical while privately, I do pop and rock which I try to blend altogether.

Q: Have you started writing your own songs?A: Yes. There is one song that I started writing earlier this year, in February, which is in the works right now... I just have to record the vocals, mix and master it. I am going to perform it on the show.

Q: How do you feel being part of the shows of big Filipino artists?A: It’s very humbling because you see them. You know their achievements, you know how far they’ve gone and yet, they still want to talk to you... They take the time out of their busy, busy life to talk to you and get to know you a little bit more because they know how you feel starting out being the local talent. They want to know about you, your music. Their very nice and very open. It’s very nice to learn from their experiences.

Q: Who else in your family sings or inclined in Music?A: Well, of course, there’s karaoke which used to be our main thing at parties but after I started, it died down. We got sick of singing because they know that I do it everyday. In terms of singing publicly and on stage, I am the first and only one... After I started, my mom noticed that my sister has a nice distinct voice. She puts her on voice lessons with my vocal

coach. Then, my brother starts to learn how to sing as well.

Q: Who are your inspirations?A: Of course, there’s always my family. My mom, my dad, my sister, my brother because I know they all look up to me... And of course, God. I won’t be here and won’t be doing anything if He didn’t want me to do it and won’t give me this gift. I am trying my best to repay Him, in a sense, trying to give as much as I can, not just the talent in singing but also in terms of the academics, being a good sister, be responsible and try my best wherever I go. Musically, Regine... Sir Gary... Ate Yeng... Taylor Swift... Demi Lovato... So far, on the top of my head, they are the ones I can think of.

Q: What is it about Demi Lovato that you like in particular?A: Her music, her voice and mostly her story. I did experience myself being bullied and made fun of at school. I was not the most liked person... and was cyber-bullied. At school, I tried to reach out with younger girls through workshops about accepting themselves... It is a learning process and I am still learning even after years and years of crying and talking to people about it and sharing my experiences but I have gone very far in terms of accepting myself.

Q: Did you ever get nervous when you are performing?A: I did and still do. In my mind, I am really hoping that I don’t mess up. Singing on stage, there’s a lot more than what people think because of a lot of things that I have to remember and focus on. I

try to make every performance as perfect as I can and make it better than the last event. Every performance is new because I don’t choreographed my performances. There is always that new element that I can bring to with performances which is what I love.

Q: What is your favourite instrument to play?A: I have to say guitar. I really do love guitar because I taught myself how to play it... My aunt lent me her guitar. At home, I looked up chords on the internet, practiced the instrument and run the basic chords. Now, whenever I compose or write a song, it’s on the guitar and not on piano.

Q: When did you learn about your very own concert finally taking place?A: I want to say, around June... We met direct Rei at a restaurant and talk about his concept and the repertoire of ideas that he has for each part of the show. Listening to him, I found myself hearing the kind of stuff that I have always wanted to do but never really had the chance to because of the audience that we have now... With 600 tickets to sell, do I know 600 people? Do I know people that would bring people that I actually have 600 people, I really hope so.

Q: How do you feel about performing at your very own concert?A: I am very excited. The repertoire that we have is my kind of music, my genre and the different sides of my personality are coming out... I am a closet Broadway Opera freak... Also, my own personal choice. You will have me playing the guitar and my original which is the most important for me and the OPM as well which is kind of where I started. I am very excited but very nervous at the same time learning all these songs and giving them justice.

Q: If you are going to invite people to watch “It’s About Time,” what would you tell them?A: First of all, I’d tell them it’s my first solo concert. You will really have a fun time, the repertoire is great. There is something for everybody, all ages, all generations. It’s going to be a really fun night. Invite your friends and families. It is definitely a family event. You are going to see a whole new side of me... I am excited to show them that there are more to what they actually see.

Q: Any particular quote that you keep in your head?A: The quote that I said earlier, “Music is my lifestyle and not my career.” In terms of my personal side of me which deals with bullying and all of that, always take the opportunity to grow and don’t keep yourself down because if you keep yourself down, everybody else will pile on top of you... At the end of the day, I can say that I am better than those people because I didn’t make fun of other people. I didn’t let them put me down. Their doing their own stuff and I am following my dreams. “Keep your head high, keep your heels higher.”

The Guest PerformersJosie de LeonJosie de Leon became the champion of the Student Pop Music Festival 1988 and a recipient of the Fe S. Panlilio Music Scholarship Award in 1991 in Manila, Philippines. She formally trained at the Center for Pop Music Philippines and later on became a vocal coach in the school. She is an active member of the Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit or OPM. Professionally, she topbilled as a solo performer at the Calesa Bar of the Hyatt Regency Manila, Shang-rila Hotel, Manila Hotel, and more topnotch hotels. In Toronto, she has been dubbed as Toronto’s Diva as she performed with big names like Jun Polistico, Anthony Castelo, APO Hiking Society, Dingdong Avanzado, Jessa Zaragoza, and Gary Valenciano. She also had several concerts of her own like “Josie Sings Vehnee Saturno: First Time@25”, “The Journey: Music of Cecille Azarcon”, ...to name a few. She also had her own TV show on Rogers Filipino TV entitled “Celebrate with Josie on TV.” In 2010, she was named as ANCOP (Gawad Kalinga) Ambassadress, giv-ing back to poor in the Philippines. She also had the privilege of recording the official song of ANCOP, “One” which Miss Cecille Azarcon composed. At present, Josie with her husband Mark Crescini heads the Josie de Leon School of Performing Arts.

Michael MasangkayA natural-born performer. Since the tender age of 8, he has been thrust into the limelight and has performed pontifical music on world renowned stages such as Massey Hall in Toronto, Radio City Music Hall in New York, and St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City with St. Michael’s Choir Boys. By age 18, he turned his attention to jazz and big band due to his love of the Rat Pack Era with the Toronto All Star Big Band where his stage presence thrived with the energy of 30-piece orchestra backing him up. In 2000, he was sought after by Royal Caribbean & Celebrity Cruise Lines to headline the stage productions on the Voyager of the Seas, Explorer, Mercury, and the Millenium which saw him travel the entirety of the Caribbean Islands and South America.

Glenn SevilloGlenn William Sevillo was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In high school, he began to immerse himself in the music of various blues artists. His musical influences include older artists such as Eric Clapton, Ray Charles, Joe Cocker, Billy Joel, Frank Sinatra, John Hiatt and Sting, as well as newer artists such as Charlie Winston, Norah Jones, Ray Lamontagne, Corinne Bailey Rae, Gavin DeGraw, Sara Bareilles and Damien Rice. Aside from his eclectic musical taste, Glenn is also widely known for his obsessive-compulsive perfectionism, his geekiness and his quirky sense of humour. In September of 2009, Glenn moved to Toronto to subject a much larger audience to his unique sense of being. He was recently a finalist in the Asian Canadian Talent Search 2011, and it was the first time he performed as a solo artist in public after which he has performed in some local shows and has been a featured artist on 101.3FM and AM530 radio stations. He has also competed in the Global Singing Idol competition and has represented Studio 75 Productions in promoting local Filipino talent. Currently, he hopes to learn how to play the guitar, harmonica and piano and eventually compose and perform his own music on stage. Glenn insists that it’s never too late to be happy and pursue your passion and hopes to inspire others to never give up on themselves.

Lia LuzLia Luz is a 15 year old Filipino soprano, who has been studying voice at the New Conservatory of Music for the past seven years. She is a grade nine student at Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School. Lia has won multiple awards and scholarships for voice and piano. She took part in a show called Kids of Tomorrow, raising money for the Hospital for Sick Children. Lia has performed in various community events, such as the Making Waves Festival and as a member of the “Voices of the Future” during the Mabuhay Festival. She has performed in concert with great local talent such as Chyrell Samson, Rodney Ronquillo, and Emillio Zarris, just to name a few. Lia performed in a musical play last December called “Christmas in the City” which raised money for Konnect Com-munity, a charity that helps those in need in Toronto. She also had the pleasure to record an original song, entitled “Born on This Day” composed by Onofrio Virdo, and also recorded a music video of the song with Donald Torres. Lia also had the opportunity to perform for former Philippine President Fidel Ramos during his visit to Toronto promoting the Gawad Kalinga Charity, along with the Voices of the Future. Most recently, Lia has been cast by the Kindred Spirit Orchestra of Markham in a production called “Broadway Kids Live” set to go on stage next May 2012. Some of Lia’s musical aspirations is to be a performer on Broadway.

Martina Ortiz-LuisMartina Ortiz-Luis is 10 years old and is currently in level 6 of the Royal Conservatory of Music for voice and level 5 for violin. She also plays the piano and loves to dance jazz. She has been performing in theatres and big events since the age of 5. She has also participated successfully in several competitions throughout Ontario. In 2006, she won First Place in the prestigious York Region Celebration of the Arts Talent Search (age 13 and under category) at the age of 5. Her early successes in various competitions opened up invites for her to perform at various charities and social events. Martina loves to perform and entertain her audience.

Peter D’Souza

Dancing all his life, the dancer and choreographer, Peter D’Souza has accomplished an enormous amount from being in music videos for YTV The Next Star (TNS) and performing in the finale at Canada’s Wonderland for Season 4’s TNS. Trained in Hip-hop, Contemporary, Lyrical and Ballet, Peter trains frequently in Los Angeles and Toronto to become a better and more well rounded dancer.

Axel VillamilChoreographer and dancer Axel Villamil has been dancing from the age of 4 yearsold. Learning how to dance in a church basement, Axel has taken his dancing and gone a great distance making it a part of his life and really a part of himself. Some of his credits include dancing on Much Music Live for Much Music’s dance week, dancing in Shawn Desmond’s “Night Like This” music video, dancing in Cascada’s “Au Revoir” music video, competed in TFC Kat Talent Search, dancing in JJ Villar’s piece in Carnival 2010 in Los An-geles, dancing in Mihran’s piece in Carnival 2011 in Los Angeles, dancing in Mimoza Duot’s “Insane” music video, backup dancing for the winner of Season 3 The Next Star Diego Gomez and back-up dancing for the contestants of the recent Season 4 The Next Star Finale at Canada’s Wonderland. Axel trains regularly in Los Angeles and in Toronto in a means to become as much of a well rounded dancers as he can. Aside from dancing regularly, Axel sings, plays ukulele on his YouTube, TheAxelV, and studies rigorously at the Univer-sity of Toronto majoring in Computer Science. Axel owes all his success as a choreographer and dancer to his amazingly supportive parents. “If it wasn’t for my family, I wouldn’t be where I am right now.”

Dan Carlo ArdoñaCurrently studying at York University, the 21 year-old Dan Carlo Ardoña spends his spare time dancing and making choreography to share with friends and the other dancers in his community. He collaborates fre-quently to showcase his dancing skills in videos, debus and other public events. Dan’s main style is hip-hop and spends time with his friends and family living a good and happy life.

Gareh JohnsonAttending the University of Toronto, Gareh Johnson has taken a great part in being part of the dance com-munity at his university. As a veteran member of the campuses dance team, SC SWAG, Gareh choreo-graphs and dances regularly teaching his style of reggae dance and hip-hop to the members of his team, creating beautiful pieces that are shown at school events and dance university dance competitions such asOUCH.

The BandMichael Ombao, KeyboardMichael Ombao has always been a very involved musician, participating in numerous concerts, shows and events in and around the Toronto area. He has had the privilege to work with local tal-ents as well as international recording artists. His experience and versatility has allowed him to play all genres of music and he truly enjoys the art of live performance. Michael believes that music is meant to be shared, and this is what he aspires to do as a music teacher in the York Catholic Disc-trict School Board. He is also the musical director for the Youth Program at the Markham Federa-tion of Filipino Canadians and the pianist for the Youth Choir at his parish church.

Mannix Esteraz, BassMannix Esteras hails from Baguio City, Philippines. He started as a young guitarist playing in the folk houses and clubs in Baguio City. Took his music to the churches of the United Arab Emirates and to the clubs of Abu Dhabi... then finally migrated to Canada in 2000 with his guitar. He has performed with plenty of talented artists and musicians in the Toronto area, many of whom are well-known in the Filipino community. He enjoys playing all styles of music and generally loves performing whether it be at concerts, shows, communityevents, or at church.

Wayne Alphonso, GuitarWayne Alphonso is a young musician who teaches guitar, bass, and drums. He also performs at lo-cal bars and venues on the side. He enjoys bringing music to the community and hopes to share his own music with others.

Mack Alfonso, DrumsMclaren Alphonso or Mack to his family and friends was born in Mumbai, India in April, 1987. He has always had a passion for music playing piano, drums, guitar and bass. He is currently a music teacher in private schools all across York Region as well as teaching guitar in community centres in Markham and York Region. He has played and performed for numerous gigs and concerts includ-ing the Mayor of Mississauga’s Gala. He enjoys playing all styles of music and are well-versed in different genres.

Julie Nguyen, Audio TechnicianJulie Nguyen erupted onto the Toronto music scene with her signature alias JulezLIVE. JulezLIVE has mixed for events such as YouTUBE Canada launch party, The Toronto Alternative Fashion show, LG Fashion Week, Juno Awards Media Room, The Beat Down Hip Hop Dance Competition and Academy of Heroes to name a few. With crowds that range from 40 to 4000 attendees, JulezLIVE has experience working from the small and intimate events to large grand scale parties and gatherings. JulezLIVE can be found in major Toronto clubs at night mixing, recording, filming and promoting for nightclubs and special events alongside Nu-Lite Ent and many others. JulezLIVE’s audio skills are rock solid and is trusted by many reputable names in the industry.
