upon the lives of those who are touched by our alumni.I can think of nothing more valuable than the work we do to

prepare students to lead and serve in the church and world. Th e articles about alumni Scott Schmieding and Ron Royuk in this edition of the Broadcaster are inspiring stories of persons whose lives have been changed by catastrophic circumstances. Yet the circumstances have given them incredible opportunities to live, witness and proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ.

As we continue to provide our students the best Lutheran, Christian education possible, please join us in thanking God for all He is doing to provide a life-changing education for our students. Please support us with prayers, gifts and words of encouragement as together we work to make a life-changing education available to the current generation of Andrew Smiths.

Sincerely,

in 1963 andrew smith graduated from concordia. In 2005 Andy began his service to Concordia as a regent of the university. Between 1963 and 2005, God used Andy in many ways: teacher in Lutheran and public schools, corporate executive, husband, father, son, brother, grandfather and Christian layperson.

Andy has traveled the world, met with national and international leaders, bought and sold companies, led a Fortune 500 company, forgotten more about Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War than most will ever know, inspired employees and enjoyed life and family.

Recently, Andy shared with me the value of his Concordia education. He said, “When I think of my sons and the higher education they received, I realize they received an outstanding academic education. However, when I compare the education they received to the education I received at Concordia there is a tremendous diff erence. I received a life-changing education. I wish they had too.”

With so much discussion of the cost of education, it’s wonderful to hear a lesson of its incredible, sometimes inestimable value. With Andy, I believe the greatest value of a Concordia education is the life-changing impact it has on the lives of our students and

After the Storm

Rev. Scott Schmieding ‘87 stands inside the barren sanctuary of Lutheran Church of the Pines in Waveland, Miss. Everything inside the church was destroyed by six foot fl ood waters.

Ron Royuk HS ‘59 CO ’63, principal at Lutheran High School in Metairie, La., was able to assess damage to the school early in September 2006.

Destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina in Slidell, La. The path of destruction is over 150 miles wide. Thirty-eight LCMS Southern District congregations and 13 Lutheran schools experienced damage or destruction from Katrina.

Rev. Scott Schmieding ‘87 and Vicar Eric Hiner ‘02 of Trinity Lutheran Church in Baton Rouge stand next to the pile of carpet and pews that they helped remove from the fl ooded sanctuary of Lutheran Church of the Pines in Waveland, Miss. The church had more than six feet of water in it.

on sunday, aug. 28, rev. scott schmieding ´87 was putting things away in his storage shed, clearing his yard of anything that might be blown away by Hurricane Katrina. He was not frightened, just being prudent. As senior pastor at Trinity Lutheran in Baton Rouge, La., he had led his congregation in worship that morning as usual. Th e threat of big storms, even hurricanes, is a part of life when you live near the Gulf Coast. News reports had Hurricane Katrina on the way, but it was not a time to panic.

Ron Royuk HS ‘59 CO ‘63, principal at Lutheran High School in Metairie, La., a suburb of New Orleans, also made what seemed to be routine preparations for a hurricane. “In this area we are used to seeing tropical storms develop,” said Royuk. “You keep an eye on them and you sort of learn to take it in stride.”

Hurricane Ivan had made a similar threat to the region just the year before and, thanks to a turn in the storm before landfall, New Orleans and Baton Rouge received only light damage. Seeing the approach of the storm and wanting to be cautious, Royuk called off two days of classes in advance. Rev. Schmieding welcomed children and staff from the New Orleans-based Bethlehem Children’s Center to stay in the gymnasium, just as they had last year when Ivan threatened.

Unlike Ivan, however, Hurricane Katrina delivered.

made its Louisiana landfall. Estimates put the damage costs over $100 billion and the number of dead in the hundreds. With the breach of several New Orleans levees, the storm leveraged its damage even further, fl ooding much of the city and turning hundreds of thousands of her citizens into refugees.

Some of the 70 new students who enrolled at Baton Rouge Lutheran School after Hurricane Katrina. Gordon Schamber ‘73 is principal.

LHS’s two-day break from classes turned into 24 lost school days. Th e school did not re-open until Oct. 3. Hurricane winds severely damaged the school’s roof and pushed in exterior walls, exposing classrooms. Th e LHS building also suff ered water damage—not from fl ooding like one might expect but because of rain that blew into the building horizontally during the storm.

Royuk relocated to an offi ce and housing provided by friends at Concordia Lutheran High School in Tomball, Texas, and started the process of gathering information and contacting his scattered students and staff . Cell phones turned out to be the key technology that still linked together the dislocated students and staff . “Some students were so gregarious that they had had cell phone numbers of up to half of the student body in their phones,” said Royuk. “Well, what a blessing that turned out to be!”

Schmieding, in the meantime, had been able to weather the storm at home with his family. Some 60 miles west of New Orleans, Baton Rouge had come through it all relatively well. About half of the city had temporarily lost power, but, unlike New Orleans, it was functioning. Th e city’s population swelled by nearly 50 percent as refugees arrived. Schmieding and Trinity Lutheran Church and School faced a surge of a diff erent kind since they were in an obvious position to help.

Trinity Baton Rouge attended to evacuees and those displaced, off ering free schooling and meals for any displaced Lutheran students from New Orleans. Also the LCMS Southern District Offi ce moved to Baton Rouge, to a house on property that Trinity planned to use for expansion. “Chainsaw brigades” were sent out to the churches and others in need of assistance. Displaced

families found refuge through the church, in some cases literally taking sanctuary in the sanctuary. As LCMS volunteers streamed in from the rest of the United States, Associate Pastor Dave Buss helped guide them to where they were needed.

Schmieding found lessons of faith in the experience. “Our enrollment had been down a bit this year and we had been disappointed by that. We had been praying, ‘God, please send us new students.’ We had no idea our prayer would be answered in this way.” Th e school’s off er of free tuition and meals brought in 70 displaced students.

“We organized, but we did not have a plan,” said Schmieding. “We worked as a team and simply went forward taking steps of faith, making it up as we went, playing it by ear, and sharing the hope of Jesus in both tangible and spiritual ways.”

Schmieding describes being on the front lines of the relief eff orts as overwhelming—both because of the unbelievable scale of the destruction and because of the incredible national response and opportunity for ministry. “Personally, I think I did more ministry in two weeks after Katrina than I do on average for fi ve years of ministry,” he explained.

Royuk, whose own home was fl ooded, sees the blessing amidst the destruction as well. Much has already been done to help, but in reality the school and its students and staff are on a long-term road to recovery. “I keep telling everyone that God promised us that if we love Him, all things work together for good. Sometimes that’s hard to hang on to, but I keep encouraging people—God can do it!”

several members of concordia´s class of 2000 were featured in a Broadcaster article shortly before their graduation. At that time, they said they were “on a mission” to share their strong commitment to our Lord and make a diff erence in the lives of others. More than fi ve years later, their dedication to this ideal continues to shine brightly.

In recent interviews, the graduates said that their time at Concordia was an extremely valuable experience because of the high-quality, personalized education that prepared them for their calling, the moral and ethical values that were reinforced, the extra-curricular activities that were readily available, and the Christian relationships they developed.

Lisa (Zielke) HubbardLisa (Zielke) Hubbard

said a parental nudge led her to a Concordia visit. “My mom actually ‘made’ me visit Concordia during my senior year of high school. I had a few friends from our church

attending and they showed me around, introduced me to people...and the rest is history.”

Attending a Christian college was extremely important for Hubbard, and in her professional life she has been “fl exible, knowing that I would run with whatever the Lord brought my way.” So far the Lord has led her to serve as a missionary and teacher in Hungary, a teacher and master’s degree student at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, and a teacher in Wisconsin.

“While my education and experience in Seward served as a springboard for my career and life, what I value most about my time at Concordia are the relationships I developed with faculty, staff and students. Some of my best friends and most prized mentors come from my time in Seward.”

Lisa and her husband Brad live in Schofi eld, Wis., where Brad serves as associate pastor at Mount Olive Lutheran Church. Th e couple is anxiously awaiting the

birth of their fi rst child, due in December.Marty and Christin (Maxson) Senechal

By the time they graduated from Concordia in 2000, Marty and Christin had been married for more than two years. Th e couple got reacquainted at a kindergarten reunion in Colorado Springs and found they were both attending Concordia, and then fell in love.

Marty and Christin both came to Concordia because of its respected teaching program, the Christ-centered education it off ered and because each of their parents attended Concordia and spoke highly of their experiences. Th ey now serve as teachers in Omaha, Marty teaching high school social studies at Concordia Lutheran Junior/Senior High School, and Christin teaching fourth grade at Bread of Life Lutheran School.

Christin said she tries to emulate a number of her Concordia professors, especially Associate Professors of Education Dr. Janell Uff elman and Dr. Rebecca Fisher, and Emeritus Professor of Music, Dr. David Held. “Th ey treated all of their students so well and also had a contagious enthusiasm that I try to refl ect to my students.”

Both Marty and Christin were involved in Concordia Singers. Christin was also editor of the Tower and Marty ran on the track team, an experience that he says “has proven extremely valuable during my high school coaching career.” Marty is a basketball and track coach at Concordia in Omaha, while Christin is his assistant coach on the basketball team.

Recently the Senechals started work toward their master’s degrees at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Th ey are proud parents of one, a black and white miniature dachshund, Snoopy.

David BattagliaDavid Battaglia graduated

from Concordia in 2000 with a double major in math and chemistry. He then spent the next four years on fellowships at the

University of Arkansas, from which he earned a doctorate in physical chemistry in December 2004. Battaglia now works at Nanomaterial and Nanofabrication Laboratories (NN-Labs), a corporation that manufactures and produces semiconductor metal and magnetic nanoparticles. He has had seven works published and earned two patents.

Battaglia says the four years he spent at Concordia “better equipped me morally to be a better scientist and person.” He says there is a pervasive feeling inside the scientifi c community that scientists are too smart to have faith in God. Battaglia continues to embrace his faith and has now become the youngest elder in the history of his congregation, St. John Lutheran in Fayetteville, Ark.

Battaglia’s time on Concordia’s campus was “dominated” by extra-curricular activities, including seasons on the baseball diamond. He credits activities outside the chemistry lab as being a very important part of his education.

Battaglia followed the path blazed by his parents, sisters and cousins, all of whom attended Concordia. David and his wife, Tara, were married in the summer of 2004.

Spirited TeachingOmaha teachers Marty and Christin (Maxson) Senechal are using Concordia education in their classrooms. They credit their Concordia professors for their contagious enthusiasm for teaching.

“When children see an author or illustrator, the entire book comes alive for them,” said Dr. Janell Uff elman, associate professor of education at Concordia and director of the Plum Creek Children’s Literacy Festival. “Children see themselves as readers and writers as a result.”

Concordia’s Plum Creek Children’s Literacy Festival provides a lively corrective to such thoughts. Th e festival, bursting with activity and enjoyment, gives thousands of children a chance each year to see some of America’s fi nest children’s books authors and to participate in activities inspired by reading. A literacy conference for adults is the capstone for the festival, off ering K-12 teachers and administrators from Nebraska and around the nation a chance to learn from a fi eld of literacy experts and children’s books authors.

Th is year marked the tenth year of the festival. When it started it was a one-day, one-author event serving about 200 people; it has since grown to three days and welcomes about 5,500 participants from 60 schools. Th e reputation of the event is also spreading among authors and illustrators, and the festival is booking its presenters several years in advance.

Dozens of current and former Concordia professors take part in planning and staffi ng the event. Concordia students are also directly involved, including members of Uff elman’s Foundations of Literacy course who lead activities for children.

Dr. Robert D. Fiala, emeritus profes-sor of history, has four photographs (of Vietnam and Hong Kong) on exhibit at the Chinese Culture Centre in Singapore and one (of Japan) on exhibit at the Bada Shoe Museum in Toronto. Fiala has added a number of new essays and photographs (on China and Laos) to his Web site, Asian Historical Architecture www.orientalarchitecture.com. Th e site has more than 9,000 images, and many of Fiala’s Asian photographs are circulating (with and without permission) on other Web sites.

President Brian Friedrich successfully defended his dissertation titled “Th e Role

Emly Hartmann, a sophomore studying elementary education, assists at the Festival. No other Concordia event brings as many people to campus as the Plum Creek Children’s Literacy Festival. Nearly 40 percent of attendees this year were also fi rst-time visitors to the Concordia campus.

Master’s literacy programs available in online and on-campus format

Th e literacy festival and undergraduate off erings at Concordia are complemented by a fl ourishing master’s program. Concordia’s literacy master’s will

appeal to those vitally interested in literacy education, such as regular classroom teachers and reading specialists.

Students in the graduate literacy program enroll in courses taught through a combination of off -campus and intensive on-campus learning experiences. Students in the approximately 18 month program spend 13 days on campus each summer to earn up to nine hours of credit. Online courses are taught during the regular academic year. Dr. Joseph Herl’s book, “Worship Wars in Early Lutheranism: Choir, Congregation, and Th ree Centuries of Confl ict,” was awarded the 2005 Roland Bainton Prize of the Sixteenth-Century Society and Conference (SCSC) for outstanding book in the fi eld of art history and music. Th e SCSC is an international scholarly society dedicated to studies in the early modern era.

Shirley Liesener, director of development operations and annual gifts, retired in October

after 15 years of full-time service.

Professors William Wolfram and James Bockelman exhibited works on paper at the Haydon Art Center in Lincoln in October. Th e exhibit, titled “Reductive Measures: Works on Paper by Bockelman, Fontana, and Wolfram,” featured images generated by means of overdrawing, erasing, puncturing, or sanding the paper surface.

Th e University Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. William Kuhn, associate professor of music and chair of the music department, released its fi rst CD, “In the Spring,” in October.

Uff elman, who has been festival leader since the event began, credits a very dedicated committee, the addition this year of Festival Coordinator Vikki Gremel, and a group of faithful volunteers for the festival’s continued success. “It’s a team eff ort,” said Uff elman. “Most importantly, it is God blessing this festival. Th e growth of this thing cannot logically be explained.”

In the winner’s circleit was a joyous bus ride back to the hotel on the night that the University A Cappella Choir took third place in the folk song portion of the International Competition for Choirs in Spittal an der Drau, Austria. Th e choir would eventually earn third place overall in the competition as well.

Th e July 2005 competition took place at the end of a 24-day tour that took the choir to Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria and Italy.

the bulldogs have been to the national championship meet so regularly that the date for the national meet seems more like an appointment in their schedule than the hard-earned destination that it is.

On this trip to the big race, the women’s squad fi nished in sixth place overall, and the men took 11th. Two Concordia run-ners, Luka Th or and Andrew Walquist, also earned All-Amer-ica honors.

“Th e performances at nation-als were great,” said Dr. Kregg Einspahr, head coach. “Overall I thought the men and women had wonderful seasons.”

Running in his fi rst NAIA National Championship meet, Th or crossed the fi nish line in sixth place overall, with a time of 24:49.05. Th or’s fi nish tied the best by a Bulldog runner at the NAIA Championship meet in school history. In addition, he is the fi rst male freshman to earn cross country All-America honors for Concordia.

“Luka ran a tremendous race,” Einspahr said. “He and Andrew have typically run together throughout races and they did the same this week-end. Andrew is a leader and he really helped Luka throughout

Bulldogs return to nationals

the year. Th ey are two amazing competitors and just all around good guys.”

Walquist placed 12th overall crossing tape in 25:02.25. Th is marks the third time that Walquist has been an NAIA All-American. He is only the second male Concordia runner to earn the honor three times.

For the women, who were one point shy of taking fi fth place, Jacquelyn Dibbern led the way fi nishing in 41st place overall. Freshman Renae Fowler fi nished in 44th and Micah Dubbs 52nd.

“To lose the runners that we did last year and turn around and place sixth at nationals is great,” Einspahr added. “Th e women did a good job of get-ting out early and that is a key at this meet.”

Th is marked the 12th con-secutive year that the women’s team has competed at the NAIA Championships. During that span they have fi nished no lower than 18th as a team, and in the six previous years the Bulldogs have had four national runner-up fi nishes.

For the men it was the sixth year in a row, and eight out of the last ten, that they participated at the NAIA Championships.

Andrew Walquist and Luka Thor compete at the Griak Invite. Both earned All-America status at the national meet.

the concordia athletic department welcomed two new faces to the staff this fall. Rachel Miller stepped in as the head volleyball coach while Rob Giesbrecht took the reigns of the women’s soccer program.

“It was exciting to add Rachel and Rob to our athletic staff ,” Athletic Director Grant Schmidt said. “Rachel is second to no one in her work ethic, preparation and dedication. Rob comes with a proven record of developing successful soccer programs.”

Under the guidance of Gies-brecht, the women’s soccer team fi nished the 2005 campaign with the most GPAC wins in school history (7) and hosted a GPAC postseason soccer game for the fi rst time at Concordia. Overall, the Bulldogs fi nished 9-8-2 with a record of 7-3-1 in the GPAC.

“I am proud of each of the girls on our team—they played their hearts out,” said Gies-brecht. “Hopefully we learn from this experience (GPAC playoff s) and move on. I am already looking forward to next season.”

Giesbrecht, a native of Abbotsford, British Columbia, came to Concordia with an impressive coaching resume that included serving as an assistant coach for the women’s

soccer program at Trinity West-ern from 1999-2005. In 2004, Trinity Western claimed the Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) National Championship. Th e CIS is the highest level of university athletics in Canada. He also served as head coach of the Fraser Valley Action Foot-ball Club, a women’s Pacifi c Coast Soccer League team.

Miller also found success in her fi rst year at the helm as the volleyball team opened the season a school-best 18-0. During that span the Bull-dogs were champions at three tournaments. At season’s end the Bulldogs were 24-11 overall (9-7 GPAC).

“Th e team has accomplished many of the goals we set at the beginning of the season,” said Miller. “I know I have much to learn about coaching but I am blessed to be able to share my passion for volleyball, along with my faith with the young women who come to Concordia.”

Miller is no stranger to Bulldog volleyball as she was a four-year letterwinner for Concordia. She also brought ample coaching experience, having served as a club vol-leyball coach for the past seven years. Th e past two years she coached Nebraska ONE, one of the premier club teams in the state.

Head Coach Rachel Miller opened her fi rst season as head coach with 18 consecutive wins.

Rob Giesbrecht, new head women’s soccer coach, led the Bulldogs to their best GPAC record.

Davis sets school records in senior seasonjennifer davis, a senior from lin-coln, neb., climbed to the top of the Concordia women’s soccer career stat charts in two categories during the 2005 season. She is now the all-time career scorer in school history with 88 goals and also has 206 points (goals and assists), the most ever at Concordia.

“It is a blessing having a player with Jen’s character on our team,” said Head Coach Rob Geisbrecht.

“She is committed to the team, loves her teammates and pursues excellence in all she does.”

Davis scored the 65th goal of her career against William Penn to tie previ-ous record holder Angela Krueger, a 2002 graduate. In Concordia’s next contest versus Ottawa, she found the back of the net at the 56:49 mark, becoming the all-time leading goal scorer in Bulldog history.

In 2005 Davis scored 24 goals and had eight assists on her way to fi rst team all-conference honors. It was the most goals for Davis in one season, as she scored 23 goals her freshman year, 23 as

a sophomore and 18 as a junior. During the 2003 season Davis was named the Co-GPAC/Scheels Player of the Year.

“Jen is a special player who possesses a great balance of aggression and com-posure,” added Giesbrecht. “She works incredibly hard, has great pace and can fi nish. Jen was a vital player on our team and will be missed next year.”

In addition to scoring goals, Davis has also had her share of assists. Coming into the season she had 19 on her career. Her goal against Jamestown (ND) tied her, again with Krueger, for tops on the point chart at 155. Points are calcu-lated by adding goals, which received a value of two plus assists, which count as one. Th ree minutes later, her assist on teammate Gentri Brown’s goal put her atop the career points category for the Bulldogs.

Although her soccer career is fi nished, her athletic career for the Bulldogs is not. Davis is also a member of the Concordia softball team, where last year she was an honorable mention GPAC selection.

Women’s golfTh e Concordia women’s golf team

wrapped up its season at the GPAC Championship Meet fi nishing in 11th place.

Concordia posted its best 36-hole score of the season (884) in the fi nal meet. Head Coach Carl Everts was optimistic, as the team did accomplish one primary goal, posting a team score.

Freshman Natalie Swanda led the Bulldogs, carding a 208, for 44th place. It was the fi fth meet out of seven that Swanda paced Concordia.

“We improved this last meet,” added Everts. “But there is still much work to be done before next fall’s season.”

Men’s soccerTh e men’s soccer team fi nished the

year 6-12-0 overall (3-8 GPAC). It was a record that easily could have been reversed as Concordia lost seven games by one goal and played in fi ve overtime games.

“I can’t say enough about the eff ort from the guys every time out,” said Head Coach Art Busha. “To lose so many close games was frustrating. But we will build on our experiences for next year.”

Seven diff erent Bulldogs earned all-conference honors, with junior Micah Chaff ee being named to the second-team.

FootballIt was a new look for the Bulldogs

during the 2005 campaign as two new coordinators were on the side-lines. Scott Hoff man took over the off ensive coordinator position while Steve Sirek returned to the staff as defensive coordinator.

Th e Bulldogs faced a tough challenge to start the season as the University of Sioux Falls, ranked No. 3 in the NAIA at the time, came to Seward. Concordia held its own, leading after three quarters, before falling 14-7. Concordia evened its record at 1-1 defeating Hastings Col-lege 31-17. Th e Bulldogs then went on a skid that saw them lose fi ve in a row, including four games by a combined 20 points.

Concordia closed out the season strong, winning three straight over Doane, Nebraska Wesleyan and Dakota Wesleyan.

Th e Bulldogs fi nished the season 4-6 overall (4-6 GPAC).

Heartfelt DedicationOver the past 112 years Concordia has been blessed by the strong relationship it shares with its alumni and friends. Th ose many years of heartfelt dedication have fi lled our classrooms with students, deepened and broadened our educational off er-ings, and enabled us to improve the campus in ways that will serve us in this century and beyond. Th ey have made us the university we are today and helped chart the path to the univer-sity we will become.

Your trust and commitment is inspiring and, in no small part, it is humbling as well. We give thanks for all of those who enable us to equip students to serve church and world. For me it has also been a great personal joy over the past months to meet with many of you on campus and across the country.

One measure of an educational institution is the number of students it serves. I am pleased to report that Concordia contin-ues to grow and fl ourish. Our application rate this coming year is up signifi cantly and we continue on a trend towards greater enrollment. Concordia is ranked again in the upper third of colleges in the “top schools” Midwest-master’s category in U.S. News & World Report’s rankings. And as noted regularly in the Broadcaster, wonderful accomplishments have been achieved by our music, arts, drama, athletic and other programs.

Another measure of an educational institution is its fi nancial status. I am pleased to share that Concordia is fi nancially sound. Th is was confi rmed this past summer in our annual audit by Virchow, Krause & Company. In a time when many institu-tions of higher education have struggled, Concordia remains on fi rm ground.

Challenges remain, of course. We are working hard to keep tuition costs aff ordable. Our endowment is growing, but it is still at a level that is well below that of other schools our size. Our campus is thoughtfully maintained–Concordia faculty and staff are careful stewards–but there are parts of it that are in signifi cant need of improvement.

With your continued support we will meet these challenges and advance the mission so dearly entrusted to us, to prepare servant leaders for church and world.

Blessings,

Brian L. FriedrichPresident & CEOConcordia University, Nebraska

jon von rentzell ´87 was one of the first graduates of Concordia’s fl edgling business program in the late ’80s, and he has since become one of its most successful alums. Von Rentzell is a vice president for performance improvement at Carlson Marketing, a privately held, world-wide marketing services fi rm. He is a 10-time recipient of Carlson Sales Achievement Award and has 18 years of experience in the areas of marketing, sales, employee performance and improving brand loyalty. Based in Minne-apolis, his global responsibilities now have him jetting across the continent and overseas several times a year.

While at Concordia, Von

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

On A Mission $60M Campaign

Concordia urged to act strategicallyRentzell went to the air for dif-ferent reasons.

He was a quarterback for the Bulldogs for four years and threw for 3,991 yards during his college career. He considered several confer-ence schools before settling on Concordia.

“I already had some natural ties there at Concordia. My sister and brother were there,” said Von Rentzell.

“So my situation was a little diff erent than perhaps a lot of student-athletes who will con-

sider Concordia today. When it comes to recruiting, you

obviously can’t count on everyone having a relative already attend-ing.”

He considers Concordia’s planned Health, Human Per-formance and Athletics Center (HHPAC) an important strategic step for the university:

Impact“You can already see

what upgrading the stadium, track, art department and education department facilities have done for the school. It has a tremendous positive impact on people and it moves forward the mission of Concordia.”

SuccessA Game Plan for

Staying competitive“I think that the HHPAC

will accelerate our ability to serve in so many ways. Th is facility will make us competi-tive—and strategically this is something that I believe the university needs to focus on. Th is will fi nally put us on par with other schools in our conference with well-rounded educational and human perfor-mance facilities.”

Whole person“I’m glad that the university

is truly considering the educa-tion of the whole person—mind, spirit and body. I’m very proud of the commitment that Concordia is making towards the facilities that support this balanced approach.”

Jon Von Rentzell ‘87

Th e fi nancial goal of On A Mission is to secure $60 million in gifts and pledges for:

• Endowment–$30 million• Weller Fund–$10 million for scholarship and operations• Capital–$20 million for long-term debt elimination and

the Health, Human Performance and Athletics Center

marge (luhman) kertz ´70 remembers sitting at the dinner table with her parents during her senior year in high school and being asked by her parents if she had considered Concordia in Seward. “Th at was the planting of the seed,” said Marge. And that seed took root. Within the next four years of her life she would gradu-ate with a degree in education and music and also marry David Kertz, an accountant, and her husband of 35 years. Marjorie has graciously provided their thoughts on Concordia and planned giving below.

Taking a step back“We had a will and we knew

it was time for it to be updated. However, because we couldn’t fi nd a copy of it, we decided to take a step back, think outside the box, and review what our true goals and objectives were, and put the document in place to carry out those goals and objectives—and as David said, ‘Practice what he had been preaching to his clients.’

Why plan?“My husband, David, is a CPA and was in public

accounting for more than 20 years. During that time he advised his clients to do estate planning for several reasons:

1) To minimize taxes.2) To help insure that one’s assets went to those

individuals or organizations that they cared about.3) To establish proper guardianship of your

children.4) To avoid having the state make these important

decisions.

Opportunity“I especially appreciated taking

classes and studying in a place where the focus is centered on being a servant for Christ wher-ever our future paths would lead us. As part of our estate planning, we were interested in impacting an organization that promoted the values that we believe in. We, therefore, wanted to do something that would provide an opportu-nity for youth to not only obtain a higher education, but also be exposed to Christian values and carry those values on to future generations. Th at is why we chose

Concordia to be a major part of our estate planning.”

What Marge and David Kertz have shared is both wise counsel and a wonderful compliment to Concordia. Please let us know if we can help you as you make plans for the future of your own estate.
