BALLADS• A  ballad  is  a  form  of  verse  • They  were  originally  "danced  songs''.  • They  were  widely  used  across  Europe,  and  later  in  the  Americas,  Australia  and  North  Africa.      • In  the  later  19th  century,  the  term  took  on  the  meaning  of  a  slow  form  of  popular  love  song  and  is  now  often  used  for  any  love  song,  particularly  the  sentimental  ballad  of  pop  or  rock.  • Ed  Sheeran  is  considered  to  be  the  “king”  of  modern  ballads.

POP  

• Pop  music  is  a  genre  of  popular  music  that  originated  in  its  modern  form  in  the  United  States  and  United  Kingdom  during  the  mid-­‐1950s.  • The  terms  "popular  music"  and  "pop  music"  are  often  used  interchangeably,  although  the  former  describes  all  music  that  is  popular  and  includes  many  styles.  •  "Pop"  and  "rock"  were  synonymous  terms  until  the  late  1960s  • Pop  music  is  eclectic,  and  often  borrows  elements  from  other  styles  such  as  urban,  dance,  rock,  Latin,  and  country  • Identifying  factors  include  generally  short  to  medium-­‐length  songs  written  in  a  basic  format.  • Some  of  the  representors  are  Selena  Gomez,  Shawn  Mendes,  Justin  Bieber,  Beyoncé,  Drake,  One  Direction,  Ariana  Grande  and  Twenty  One  Pilots.

REGGAE• Reggae  is  a  music  genre  that  originated  in  Jamaica  in  the  late  1960s.  • In  1968  was  introduced  to  a  global  audience.  • the  term  reggae  denotes  a  particular  music  style  that  was  strongly  influenced  by  traditional  mento  as  well  as  American  jazz  and  rhythm  and  blues  • Reggae  usually  relates  news,  social  gossip,  and  political  comment.    • Reggae  representors:  Bob  Marley,  Shaggy,  UB40

COUNTRY

• Country  music  is  a  genre  of  USA  popular  music  that  originated  in  the  southern  United  States  in  the  1920s  •  It  takes  its  roots  from  the  southeastern  genre  of  United  States,  such  as  folk  music  and  blues  music.    • Country  music  often  consists  of  ballads  and  dance  tunes    • According  to  Lindsey  Starnes,  the  term  country  music  gained  popularity  in  the  1940s    • The  term  country  music  is  used  today  to  describe  many  styles  and  subgenres.  The  origins  of  country  music  are  the  folk  music  of  working-­‐class  Americans  • In  2009  country  music  was  the  most  listened  to  rush  hour  radio  genre  during  the  evening  commute,  and  second  most  popular  in  the  morning  commute  in  the  United  States.  • Representors:  Gretchen  Wilson,  Big  &  Rich  

HIP-­‐HOP  ,  RAP

•  hip-­‐hop  or  rap  music,  is  a  music  genre  developed  in  the  United  States  by  inner-­‐city  African  Americans  in  the  1970s  • It  developed  as  part  of  hip  hop  culture,  a  subculture  defined  by  four  key  stylistic  elements:  MCing/rapping,  DJing/scratching  with  turntables,  break  dancing,  and  graffiti  writing.  •  Other  elements  include  sampling  beats  or  bass  lines  from  records,  and  rhythmic  beatboxing.  • In  the  1990s,  hip  hop  began  to  diversify  with  other  regional  styles  emerging,  such  as  Southern  rap  and  Atlanta  hip  hop.  •  representors:  Migos,  Eminem,  The  Weeknd,  50  Cent,  Iggy  Azalea
