Introductions
• Name
• What you do • What you hoping to hear today
• And of course, your favorite ice cream!
…worse than death? !• More than spiders, heights, and confined spaces • 75% of people are anxious
Public speaking is…
Your goals
“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to…”
Tips for Introverts (and maybe the rest of us!)
• You can either spend your life running from it, or face it head on • Have a script, but don’t write it down • The sharing mindset • Be careful with Powerpoint/Keynote • Get the worst one out of the way • The only cure for insecurity is experience
Before you speak
1. Select a topic • Based on your interests & audience
2. Prepare an outline or mind map • Organize it like a research paper
3. Make the introduction interesting • Ask a question or tell a story
4. Transfer the outline to note cards • Keep key points separate
Non-‐verbal communication
• Appearance • Posture • Gestures • Eye Contact • Facial Expressions
Addressing anxiety• Let go of perfect
• View mistakes dispassionately • You can’t make everyone happy • Mistakes are learning opportunities
• Visualize desired outcome • Avoid negative anticipation • Use humor, relaxation, singing, walking, etc. • “Begin with the end in mind…”
• Prepare positively • Speak about something you love • Remember that you know more
More anxiety management
• Get some rest and avoid complexities • Avoid mood-‐altering substances & eat lightly • Remember to breathe • Focus on friendly faces • It won’t kill you…and it might make you stronger! • The more you do it, the less anxious you become
Top 10
1. Know your material 2. Practice, practice, practice! 3. Know the audience 4. Know the room 5. Relax 6. Visualize yourself giving your speech 7. Realize that people want you to succeed 8. Don’t apologize 9. Concentrate on the message—not the medium 10. Gain experience
