Biography: Ivan Ira Esme Morris (1925-1976) was chairman of Columbia's East Asian Department from 1966-1969. Morris served as American Section chairman for the human rights organization Amnesty International.

Summary: Correspondence, manuscripts, notes, memoranda, documents, photographs and printed material of Ivan Ira Esme Morris.

In addition to personal correspondence and documents, there are files of Amnesty International. Also included are notes and manuscripts of Morris' studies in Japanese literature and culture, particularly relating to his books and translations. His interest in puzzles, and compilations of several volumes of them, are reflected in notes and correspondence. Among the major correspondence are Donald Keene, Yukio Mishima, Anthony Powell, Sacheverll Sitwell and Arthur Waly.

There are four additions to the collection: The 1980 addition; the 1982 addition; the 1984 addition and the 2003 addition.

The 2003 addition has materials from a 1999 gift and contains audio recordings.
