Impington Village College is a secondary school in the Village of Impington and Histon. The school is spread out over a large area making use of several different collections of buildings to make up the whole of the school. The primary problem with finding your way around the schools area is trying to find your way from building to building without getting lost over the schools mass area and maze of different buildings. That is what my wayfinding systems primary goal will do, it will use colour codes and direction signs to help you guide you around the areas and get you to your needed location with ease.

The Secondary problem with the school is finding your way to the room you need once your in the right area/building of the schooland thats what the secondary goal of the system will allow you to do. The wayfinding system will use a room numbering system or a simple room name sign that will allow you to find and see the room you need with the same ease you found the area/building in.

The Font being used for the wayfinding system is Bliss 2 by Jeremy Tankard.

The choice to use Bliss 2 came from refining down numberous different typefaces choices, like Din, Helvetica and Univers. Bliss 2 was picked out as the final choice for the wayfinding system due to its humanist characteristics giving it a refined and clear look for users to easily navigate the school grounds and buildings but while this is achieved the type also brings some warmth, friendly and welcoming feel to the signs and overall wayfinding system.

Wayfinding system

The colours used in the system are varied so that people can easily find the colour of the building they are heading to and then follow the signs of that colour to get to that location. On top of the building colours there is also 2 grays for car parks and paths a light green for grass areas on the map and a off-white colour for any text used. sThe chosen colours have a very varied colour palette so that the signs can be easily telled apart from each other to allow for people to pick up their heading faster.

The sign system is made up out of 5 different sign; a main area title sign, direction signs, door number signs, room name signs and a map sign. Each sign has its needed information (direction, title or number of place) on it and then the sign’s are colour coded for the area it is leading you to or if in the area the signs for that area are coloured to that colour.

Sign Demensions

The different sign demensions have been set at a size that will allow people to see them from afar but not so big that they over power the area or won’t have space. This is due to some areas of the school having smaller space suchs as corriors and passage ways.

The signs themselves are up from “Sintra” a dense PVC plastic material it has a variety of uses and can be used for indoor and outdoor environments it comes in several different thicknesses and can be cut into many shapes for logos and texts. it can have text put onto it fairly easy as well and is cheap to use to our sign system where the movement of rooms or adding of new buildings may happen offer after the intital signs have been made.

The map system uses colours and numbers for you to be able to find the location you want to go. you pin point the area you want to go on the list then look for the number on the map then you can follow the same colour signs as the building on the map to get your needed location. The map can either be placed directly onto a wall or can be used on a two posted sign like the directional signs.
