THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM
KALI, RAHUL, AND ARYAN
WHY YOU SHOULD CARE
PROBLEM▸ Elephants poached for ivory
▸ Highly endangered - predicted extinction in 25 years
▸ Ecosystems will change
▸ Species dependant on elephants will die
MASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE‣ Grassland with seasonal rivers and clumps of acacia trees. ‣ Narok County Council greatly reduced poaching, but long
way to go
ECOSYSTEM WITH ELEPHANTS
IMPORTANCE OF ELEPHANTS
ELEPHANT IMPACT ON ECOSYSTEM
‣ Trample on bushes and eat trees = Grassland
‣ Footprints make waterholes
‣ Dig up rivers
‣ Droppings allow organisms to eat undigested seeds
‣ Dung beetles reproduce in elephant manure
‣ Droppings very rich with nutrients, soil gets fertilised.

SOLUTIONS
TENTATIVE SOLUTION: ELEPHANT CAMP
▸ Elephant Camp in Masai aimed for Masai children
▸ Teaches children importance of elephants
▸ Enables the next generation with tools needed to save elephants
TENTATIVE SOLUTION
WHY IT WON’T WORK (YET)
▸ Data to show elephant population rising because of camp isn’t available
SOLUTIONS
SOLUTION: ELEPHANT ORPHANAGE
▸ Takes in elephants in danger
▸ Releases them into a herd after they’ve learned how to be elephants
▸ Data collected shows that elephant populations in Tsavo National Park have risen from this
Proposal to Narok County Council
SOLUTION
DATA
▸David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust have successfully raised and released 150 infant elephants back into herds
▸ 150 elephants that would have died otherwise.
SOLUTION
HOW IT WOULD WORK
▸ Adult Elephants need 37.2 m2 of space.
▸ Masai Mara has 1,510 km2 of land.
▸ To hold 20 alone, injured or infant elephants at any given time, we would need about 800m2 of land.
▸ Rounded up, 1km2 would be better - flexible in amount of land sanctioned off.
▸ Left with about 1,509 km2 of land.
▸ Patrolling Rangers will check elephants
SOLUTION
EXPENSES
▸ No food and water expenses
▸ Medicine: $360 per kg of Chamomile
▸ 1km worth of fence: $23,000
▸ Masai Mara revenue: $19,008,600
▸ 88% being spent on communities
▸ 12% spent on park ($2,281,032)
▸ Take away fence cost, left with $2,238,032.
▸ 1.02% of your money - One Time Investment.
INCREASE IN ELEPHANTS =
INCREASE IN REVENUE
