Too many pastors find themselves
struggling to survive in the wilder-
ness of contcl11por;l[Y ministry. In
this new pastoral theology, Pastor
David Rohrer ::tttempts to give
context and meaning to our desert
trial. He reminds us that our call-
ing is not to be custodians of an
institution, bur to be prophets like
John the Baptist. preparing a people

FR OM THE INTR ODUC TIO N
"In Luke's account of John the
Baptist's birth , the angel Gabriel
explains to John's Father, Zechariah,
that John wil! be about the work of
"m ak[ingJ ready a people prepared
for the Lord" (Lk 1:17). In chis
phrase I believe we have the kernel,
or perhaps stem cell, of the essential
character of pastoral work.
"It's a simple thing. Yet this pro-
found piece of the pastoral task is
so simple that it suffers from the
fate of getting lost. Perhaps it is so
readily affirmed as central to our
task that we fail to talk about it
and about how to do it in today's
church. And this is a tragedy,
because this phrase is the kind of
thing that can help us organize our
work. It is a set of lenses through
which we can view and evaluate our
work .... It provides us the oppor-
tunity to ask, Does this thing that
I am doing call people to pay atten-
tion ro God, or not?
"In the subsequent chapters of
this book I hope to explore the
implications of wearing this set of
lenses. By looking mainly at Luke's
rendition of John the Baptist's story,
we see a case study of pastoral
work. ... In this day when pastors
are d'lily tempted to buy remedies
guaranteed to help save the church
or produces guaranteed to grow a
church, we need to be called back
to an awareness of why the church
exists.

FROM THE FOREW ORD BY
CALVIN MILLER
"Klaus Isslee is a man for all
seasons. 1 have known him for
ye,lJ:s, and my every visit with him
has been one of joining his long,
unending conversation with God.
He is Emmaus-walking, heart-
burning-within-him Emmaus.
He is, with each new spiritual
insight, dying to talk about it. So
when I got this manuscript in the
mail, I read, and read, and read
some more. And when I finally got
to the Pifth chapter, the book orga-
nized itself around the issue he long
ago settled: 'Unless today's believers
engage the empower: ng resource
of the Holy Spirit-who is the
clivine agent of sancti fication-it
is impossible to be formed into the
image of Christ.' That is what this
book is about. That is what his life
is about.
"Klaus doesn't want much-just
co be formed into the image of
Christ. And w hy should you read
this book? Because he wants that
same thing for you.
"So, my dear Emmaus, thank
you for: this book. I walked with
you today as 1 rend, and my heart
burned within me. 1 would like to
tell you 1 am doing the best Ican, but Iknow 1 can do more. Because
of what you've written, maybe I'll
turn off the news early and eat a lot
lighter and ask myself, what can Ido co live into the life of Christ and
look forward to my bei ng better
formed in Christ?"
