Greetings Sorors of Zeta Chi Omega:

The month of May will be a very busy one for the sorors of Zeta Chi Omega. I’d like to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers. The role of the mother is a significant part of strengthening the Black family and is clearly linked to the philosophy of Platform III. Manythanks to the Program Committee along with Platform II (Literacy) as they continue to work closely with the girls from the “STEP OUT” Pro-gram. Sorors Doris Shannon, Louise Gordon, Regina Crawly, Alicia Hughes, Whitney Joyner and Kendra Gillespie are working diligently tohelp young African American girls with the basic skills to be successful in life. We cannot afford to look the other way or lose hope in ouryoung girls, many of them who cannot read, spell, write or do basic arithmetic. As Alpha Kappa Alpha sorors, we each took an oath to be ofservice and alleviate problems concerning girls and women and to improve their social stature. I ask, “what have you done with the Plat-forms to improving the social stature of girls and women?” If you can honestly say, “I don’t remember,” then I would ask that you commit togiving 45 minutes of your time on the second and fourth Wednesday, 5:00 p.m. at the Charles Houston Center working with the young girlsof “STEP OUT.” Your presence can help boost the esteem for many of the girls from “STEP OUT.” Please give the Anti-Basileus a call to sup-port this great initiative.

Congratulations to Soror Ardelia Hunter, the recipient of the Margaret Moss Retired Soror Award, and Soror Blanche Maness, the re-cipient of the Marguerite Adams Political Action Award. They were honored at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference in Ashville, North Caro-lina. Thanks to those who gave donations to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference’s Service Project.

Sorors of Alexandria, don’t forget that May 5th is a major election day. Be sure to vote for your city council and school board members. You can influence the political process at the local level! The chapter Connection Committee has once again answered the call of the Su-preme Basileus by participating in the National Conference, “CARE.” On May 5-6, 2009, we will have four chapter members to attend thistwo-day world conference held at the Ronald Regan Building in Washington, DC.

Sorors, be sure to get your bowling party tickets! See Soror Kendra Gillespie prior to the chapter meeting. Thanks to Soror AngelaTurner and Soror Lolita Harris for serving as our Pan-Hellenic representatives for the “Game Night” last month. It is always great fun tomeet and greet our brothers and sisters in Greekdom! You’re invited to attend the Black Scholars Program on May 17, 2009, 3:00-5:00p.m. at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria. This is the only event in Northern Virginia that recognizes African American high schoolscholars. Come out to support our academic scholars. On another note, Platform III, chaired by Soror Sandra Shelby, will again put on the“Kiddie Prom” for the children of the Nannie J. Lee Center, 1101 Jefferson Street, Alexandria, VA., on May 22, 2009 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Itwas a wonderful and rewarding event for the graduating kiddies to hold their prom as we served as chaperones.

We have conducted the reading of the bylaws. The chapter will vote on the bylaws at the May meeting. Don’t forget that May is Mad-Hatter’s Meeting, so bring your hat to participate in this sisterly relations activity. The June chapter meeting will start at 11:00 a.m. due tothe Global Race for the Cure prior to the meeting. The attire for the June meeting will be relaxed.

So as you can see, the month of May is a fun-filled but very busy month. All of this work cannot be done without the support and dedica-tion of each and every one you. I thank you for giving your time, talents, and treasures to ensure the perpetuity of Alpha Kappa Alpha Soror-ity, Incorporated®.

Yours in service,Soror Joyce Henderson

Spirit & Inspiration

Joy for the Journey

Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. Psalms 30:5.

A LIFE OF INTIMACY WITH GOD IS CHARACTERIZED BY JOY. Oswald ChambersGod wants you to enjoy your life. Jesus said, "I came that they may have and enjoy life, and enjoy it to the fullest." (John 10:10). Your days can be

filled with an overflowing joy that will spill into the lives of others. You can experience joy all day long, if you start your day by spending time with God,reading His Word, praying, and listening for His direction. Listening to God from the outset of each day fills you with expectancy and favor for a betterday, and those days add up to a better life. The Lord wants you to have Him clearly in sight in order to follow Him. He is willing to wake you in the morn-ing and make your ear alert to His instruction. If you will seek Him with all your heart, He will renew your strength and make clear your pathway. (SeeIsaiah 40:31 and Proverbs 3:6).

Heavenly Father, help me to use the talents, gifts, and abilities You have bestowed upon me to be a blessing to my chapter,my sorority, and ultimately to the world. Show me how to be a beacon of service, kindness, and helpfulness to others, sothat I might prove to be a powerful representative of Zeta Chi Omega everywhere I go and with everyone with whom Icome in contact.

We need to be strong so we don't fall apart every time we have to face some situations we had not planned on. Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and he expects us to develop stability in our lives. We can be strengthened and renewed by drawing strength from God, by exercising ourfaith, and by doing what He tells us to do.

Now to Him, Who, by (in consequence of) the (action of His) power that is at work within us, is able to (carry out His pur-pose and) do superabundantly, far over and above all that we (dare) ask or think (indefinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams). Ephesians 3:20. The Amplified Bible.

OUR SENSE OF JOY, SATISFACTION, AND FULFILLLMENT IN LIFE INCREASES, NO MATTER WHAT THE CIRCUMSTANCES, IF WE ARE INTHE CENTER OF GOD'S WILL. Billy Graham

God uses common, ordinary people who have uncommon goals and visions. You should not be content to be average. Average is basically okay. It isnot bad, but it is also not excellent. It is just good enough to get by, and that isn't what God wants for you. You don't serve an average God. Therefore, you don't have to settle for an average life. Every single person can be mightily used by God. You can do great and mighty things, if you believe God canuse you, and if you will be daring enough to have an uncommon goal and vision. These things won't make sense to the mind - you have to believe God forthem, place them deep down within your heart and soul, and execute the vision God gives you. You do this by walking with Him day by day. Herein liesyour true, God-ordained and pre-destined joy.

May the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful. Psalm 68:3.

JOY IN LIFE IS NOT THE ABSENCE OF SORROW. THE FACT THAT JESUS COULD HAVE UNSPEAKABLE JOY IN THE MIDST OF IN-TENSE SORROW IS PROOF THAT WE CAN EXPERIENCE THIS ,TOO. Warren Wiershe

Many women believe that happiness is a result of success. "When I find the right person to marry, I'll be happy." “When I achieve my career goals..."“When I can afford the home I really want..." The truth is that real happiness - deep inner joy - is the result of living in right relationship with God ratherthan the trappings of success. Regardless of what you may be facing - good and bad - be happy knowing you are pleasing your Heavenly Father.

ASK FOR THE JOY YOU WANT!Until now you have asked for nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be complete. John 16:24 Holman CSB.

HAPPY SPRING! Sisterly, Soror Jeanne Melvin-Martin, Chairman, Spirit and Inspiration Committee

Happy Mother’s Day!Remember Mom with a simple carnation. This custom began in 1908 whenchurches across America gave carnations to mothers on Mother’s Day. Thecarnation is believed to represent sweetness, purity and endurance, all val-ued qualities of a good mother. The color of the carnation has significance onMother’s Day. Wear a red carnation if your mother is still living or white inremembrance of your mother. Source - ezinearticles.com

May is American Stroke MonthStroke is the nation's third leading cause of death. The burden of stroke is greater among African Americans than in any other group. In fact,Blacks have almost twice the risk of first-ever stroke compared with whites, and Blacks 35–54 years old have four times the relative risk forstroke.

But there is hope. We have the power to fight stroke — and win! The power is in our hands to prevent and overcome stroke.Know these warning signs of stroke and teach them to others. Every second counts:

Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body

Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding

Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes

Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination

Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
