Chaplain’s Message

My dear brother Knights,

Peace be with you!

Two invitations for personal and communal transformation lay before us.

First, is the season of Lent. God calls us into the desert through the work of the Holy Spirit and desires to speak to/heal our souls. In a lot of ways, this is the familiar discipline of “letting go; letting God.” God’s Spirit always wants to do something within each of us. Our first response to this invitation is to give God permission to do what he wills. The second part is asking for the grace to understand what is asked of us and then the courage and grace to do it.

The second invitation is participation in Season 2 of ARISE Together in Christ, which begins with ‘sign up’ Sunday on the weekend of February 18/19. As you know, ARISE is a six-week series focused on faith-sharing in small communities. A number of our brother Knights participated in Season 1. If you would like to know more about this process of growing closer to Christ, then please invite them to share their experience with you.

Be assured of my prayerful support of each of you and your loved ones!

Vivat Jesus!

Fr Bob

District Deputy’s Message

The Substance Abuse Poster contest at the time of this article is just starting. The District level and my judging panel is up to the challenge, I will have the district results for next month.

The District Basketball Free Throw will be held on February 25th from 9:30 AM to Noon at H.J.Lassaline Elementary School on Wildwood in Forest Glade. This is the same school as last year. I do need about four brother knights to assist in this event. If you have a child in High School that needs some community hours I will be willing to sign them off for 2.5 hours. If you are interested let me know at 519-972-1045.

Also if there are any brother knights interested in becoming a District Deputy or District Warden in the future let me know and we can have a chat about what it would take to do either one of these roles. We do have to keep the good works of the order moving forward and planning ahead is all part of it.

Vivat Jesus

Happy New Year! I hope that you and your loved one’s had a holy and joyous time celebrating the Birth of Our Lord Jesus.

It’s time to reflect on our past accomplishments: Thanks to Bros’ Mike McLelland and Greg MacDonald we had some success with our recruitment program. Our Chancellor Bro. George does an excellent job visiting and taking communion to our Brothers and Parishioners who are sick. Our Choir Director Bro Stan Burke leads the Knight’s Choir at Mass on Saturday. Bro. Eduardo Aguilar and Bro. John Barron are excellent Youth Program Directors. Brother Tom Becksmith is our Church and ProLife and keep Christ in Christmas Program Director

I am extremely proud of our Trustees (Brothers Jerry Laforet, Paul Ratko and Bruce Mackie). They are also our Charity Committee. Earl Fontaine and his team do a great job serving meals at the Downtown Mission. Thanks to Bro. Mike Agius for all his work with the Hospice fund raising dinner. Our Bingo Chair Bro. Paul Ratko and Bro. Dan Dumouchelle do a great job and I must let you know Bro. Paul who is now on the mend was hospitalized for some time. Our Past Grand Knight Bro. Dan Dumouchelle stepped in and did an excellent job. Paul Gervais our News Letter editor, and Lecturer has also done an excellent job. He also raised funds for our wheel chair Program. He and Bro. Mike Charbonneau are the cooking team Chairmen. Bro. Keith Campbell is our Council Service Director and as usual has done an excellent job with The Good Fellows Paper drive, organizing the Fundraiser for our Seminarians, and also our Christmas Dinner Party. We look forward for more good things in 2012. This can only happen with your help. Bro’s. We need you to volunteer and to assist; any small way will make a huge difference.

Thank you very much to all the Brother Knights who have helped in so many ways, often quietly and without recognition:

On Sunday 15th January, 2012 there will be a First & Second degree at St. Gregory Church in St Clair Beach We received a couple of pictures of recipients from the wheel chairs drive which we had.

May Almighty God Bless Us All Abundantly

Vivat Jesus!

Art Huggins,

Grand Knight.

A Happy New Year to all. I would like to welcome everyone back from Christmas holidays. I am sure we all had good times with family and friends.

Youth Report

The Light Side:

Children really brighten up a household. They never turn the lights off.

Doctor: Take the green pill in the morning with a glass of water. Take the blue pill after lunch with a glass of water. Then just before going to bed take the red pill and a glass of water.

Man: Exactly what is my problem?

Doctor: You’re not drinking enough water.

Church Report

Happy New Year Brothers in Christ

Our Keep Christ In Christmas Magnet sales were great. Thanks to all who helped with the sales.

The Rosary- We continue to promote the praying of the Rosary. We have successfully begun each of our regular meetings with a decade of the beads. Also Wednesdays at 930 am just before the 10 am Mass we support and encourage all members to join with the parishioners in praying the Rosary. I personally have found it difficult to get back into the habit of praying the Rosary so I have enlisted the help of a friend over the phone in the evening. The Rosary is a good prayer to use in support of the unborn. Our prayers will certainly help in this area. The past two popes have supported this regard.

Once again we will join with the CWL to hold a maternity shower Feb 18 / 19 to raise material goods and monies to support Birthright.

Our actions in both prayer and programs will achieve good for the world.

Council Report GOODFFELLOWS I would like to thank all of the volunteers who gave up their time to be out in the elements to sell the Goodfellow papers which helped us to give the Goodfellows the amount of $5,400.00, a job well done. Also I would like to thank Brian and Diane Metcalfe for their dedication manning the sign up poster every weekend for a month prior to the event, to Jerry Laforet and Bruce Mackie for their assistance to me by helping to distribute papers, toques, bags, and most of all counting and wrapping all monies, brought in by the volunteers. To all who went above and beyond the call of duty by doing double and triple stints at their locations. Without all of you, we would not have had another successful year. CHRISTMAS DINNER A GREAT BIG THANK YOU goes out to brother Paul Gervais and his cooking team for doing an excellent job preparing and cooking the fabulous turkey dinner that was held on Dec. 10th. in the Parish Family Center. Tickets were sold in advance and approximately 160 dinners were served by our Parish youth. Paul you do such a fantastic job, I really don't know what we would do without you. A special raffle was held in order for us to give a small monetary donation to Father Mike Graham, as he is retiring on Dec.31st, 2011 after 43 years. We all wish Father all the best and much needed rest. He has said that he is coming back as a member of our council - all right. Our next big event will be our fish fries starting in March 2012 for four weeks. Keith Campbell Council Director

LIFE MATTERS...

Andrew J. Despins FIC, CPCA, PGK

HOW MUCH WILL SHE HAVE TO LIVE ON?

On average, women live several years longer than their spouses.

Together for many years, couples have had busy careers, raised children, and paid tuition fees to educate them. Eventually they may look forward to gardening, traveling, and playing with the grandkids together when retired. Unfortunately, the majority of women will spend a good portion of their retirement years alone because, on average, women live several years longer than their spouses.

Both partners in a long-term relationship, at least need to understand the implications that this could have on their joint financial retirement and estate plans.

Beneficiary Selections. Make sure that the proper

beneficiary designations, where applicable, have been made on investments such as segregated funds and RRSPs/RRIFs. This will allow for a tax-free transfer of these investments.

Retirement Savings Shortfall. Consider purchasing life

insurance on the male partner to provide additional capital, which the woman can invest to make up for any shortfall in her remaining retirement savings.

Capital Gains Liabilities. Life insurance can cover any

income tax liabilities that may be payable by the estate on capital gains on the death of the second spouse. Therefore, a joint-last-to-die life insurance policy can be purchased, designed to pay after the death of both spouses to cover those needs.

Women and Pensions. Many women will have their

spouse's pension reduced if the spouse or partner predeceases them.

I urge all Knights of Columbus members to take full advantage of their membership. Call me today to set up an appointment to see how K of C products can help you and your family.
