That this Synod, recognising the importance ofthe issues raised for the unity and mission of the church in Southern Africa, respectfully requests the Archbishop to appoint a commission to deal with the ordination of women to the priesthood, with the following terms of reference:(a) to consult with theologians and other concerned persons
both here and in other parts of the world concerning arguments both in favour of and against the ordination of women to the priesthood, and to produce as simple a summary of these as possible for discussion at Diocesan Synods and other similar bodies, with such comments as they may wish to add;
(b) to investigate and comment on what changes would be necessary in the Constitution and Canons of the Church of the Province of Southern Africa and other related areas if the Church of the Province of Southern Africa were to decide to ordain women to the priesthood.
(c) To obtain information concerning the acceptability and work performed by women ordained as priests within the Anglican communion, the numbers involved etc., and to produce a summary statement in this regard for submission with (a) to Synods and similar bodies
(d) To investigate attitudes both for and against the ordination of women to the priesthood in the Roman Catholic church, and to produce a brief report in this regard, also for inclusion with (a) above
(e) To undertake this work as an urgent priority, and to report to the Archbishop within one year from the date of appointment at the latest. Copies of this report shall be tabled at the next session of Provincial Synod, and be provided to delegates.
