A poignant film adaptation of Missei Shirakawa's same-titled essays about his

experiences as the head monk at Eifukuji Temple in Ehime Prefecture's Imabari City.

I Am A Monk offers a bittersweet and humorous portrayal of a monk's day-to-day

life—from baseball games to selecting the perfect prayer beads.

Susumu Shirakata grew up at Eifukuji Temple and initially studied hard to get ordained as a monk. However, after graduation, Susumu decides to try

get ordained as a monk. However, after graduation, Susumu decides to try pursuing another career working as a bookshop clerk. Just as he begins to readjust to his new job, his grandfather Zuien, the head monk of the local temple, suddenly passes away. With no other candidate for the next chief monk, the 24-year-old Susumu grows determined to follow in his late grandfather's footsteps and learn the innerworkings of modern-day monks. He quickly discovers that being a monk is not as simple as he originally imagined.
