From the Pastor’s Desk Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Theme: “Are We Fit or Not Fit for the Kingdom?”

This Sunday, we are called to reflect on how have been faithful or faithful in our

Vocations as Christians. A German philosopher and minister Dietrich Bonhoeffer, in his

publication The Cost of Discipleship wrote, “When Christ calls a man, he bids him come

and die.” Bonhoeffer lived this situation in his proper flesh. In the time of the Hitler

regime, he obtained permission to minister to his fellow prisoners in concentration camps.

Unfortunately, a few days before his liberation from the concentration camp, he was

executed.

As a Christian, if God calls you to be a Christian, “he bids you come and die” to your old

self, your egoism and all evil, and become a new creation in Christ. There is no easy way

for us to do this. Every day we die in our ministry trying to serve God, Church and the

community. In today’s gospel, we met a man who volunteered to follow Jesus. Jesus made

it very clear to him on the roughness of being a disciple. “Foxes have holes and the birds

of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no where to lay his head.” In other words,

someone who follows Jesus will not enjoy the comfort of life. He will not have a life that is filled

with pleasures. It will not be all sweet and soft to walk with Jesus. Any one who wants to try should

Tema: “¿Somos Aptos o no Aptos para el Reino?”

Este Domingo, estamos llamados a reflexionar sobre cómo hemos sido fieles o fieles en

nuestras Vocaciones como cristianos. Un filósofo y ministro alemán, Dietrich Bonhoeffer,

Al seguir a Jesús, habrá cosas que dejar atrás y personas con las

que separarse. Hemos escuchado lo que Jesús les dice a cada uno

en el evangelio. “Otro a quien dijo, sígueme, respondió:” Déjame

ir y enterrar a mi padre primero. “Pero Jesús respondió.” Deja que

los muertos entierren a sus muertos; su deber es ir y difundir las

noticias del reino de Dios.” Y otro dijo, “Le seguiré señor, pero

primero déjeme ir y despedirme de mi pueblo en casa.” Jesús le

dijo, “Una vez que se pone la mano en el arado, nadie que mira

hacia atrás es apto para el reino de Dios.”

En el evangelio, vemos a Jesús caminando por pueblos y ciudades

con doce hombres llamados Sus Apóstoles. Eran los que lo

acompañaban dondequiera que iba a predicar el mensaje de Dios.

Pero no sabemos a cuántos llamó que no se unieron a él. Sabemos

de alguien a quien llamamos "el hombre rico.” Puede que haya

otros que escucharon su llamado, pero también les resultó muy

difícil. ¿Qué pasó con esos tres hombres que leemos en el evan-

gelio de hoy? (Mc 10: 17-22)

Jesús no engaña a las personas diciéndoles que seguirlo implica

sufrimiento y muerte. Incluso les dice que tendrán que elegir entre

diferentes tareas. Entre la llamada de su gente en casa y la de

seguirlo. No dice que no deben enterrar a sus padres ni decirles

adiós. Pero Él quiere que la gente piense por sí misma: ¿Estamos

listos para poner el reino de Dios por encima y antes que cualquier

otra cosa?

Hoy Jesús nos está haciendo la misma pregunta hoy. La misma

pregunta y el mismo llamado: ¿estamos listos como cristianos para

seguir a Jesús de verdad a donde sea que vaya? Seguirlo sin saber

a dónde nos llevará esto es un error. Debemos saber que nuestro

ser fiel a Él a veces nos puede pedir que no sigamos a nuestros

familiares o amigos donde quisieran que estuviéramos. No es fácil

para un cristiano ser honesto y justo en todos sus tratos con las

personas. No es fácil decir la verdad, y solo la verdad, en todas las

situaciones. No es fácil ser fiel a mi esposa / esposo, ni siquiera

pensar en tomar una segunda esposa, o irme con otro hombre. No

es fácil no dar sobornos, o rechazar un soborno cuando se ofrece.

No es fácil vivir en un buen entendimiento con mis vecinos, re-

spetándolos y ayudándolos.

Todo esto es parte de ser un seguidor de Jesús. Si quiero ser uno,

debo saber qué espera que sea como él. Alguien que da todo lo que

tiene. Es posible que no podamos dar de una vez. ¡Pero Dios es

paciente, esperará hasta que estemos listos para darle nuestro

TODO!

(Continued from page 1) There will be sacrifices to make. I cannot forget how I felt the day

I got the news that my mother passed away. That day was one of

the moments I tried to question my vocation as a priest. Why

didn’t I stay back to take care of her in January when I went to

visit? I knew fully well that her days to live were counted? This is

one of the prices of Christian vocation.

In following Jesus, there will be things to leave behind, and people

to part with. We have heard what Jesus tells each one in the

gospel. “Another to whom he said, follow me, replied, “Let me go

and bury my father first.” But Jesus answered, “Leave the dead to

bury their dead; your duty is to go and spread the news of the

kingdom of God.” And another one said, “I will follow you sir, but

let me first go and say good-bye to my people at home.” Jesus said

to him, ‘Once the hand is laid to the plough, no one who looks

back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

In the gospel, we see Jesus walking around towns and villages

with twelve men called His Apostles. They were those who

accompanied Him wherever he went to preach God’s message.

But we do not know how many he called who did not join Him.

We know of one whom we call “the rich man.” There might

have been others who heard His call but they also found it too

difficult. What happened to those three men we read in today’s

gospel? (Mk 10:17-22)

Jesus does not deceive people by telling them that following Him

involves suffering and death. He even tells them that they will

have to choose between different duties. Between the call of their

people at home and that of following Him. He does not say that

they should not bury their parents or say good bye to them. But He

wants people to think for themselves: Are we ready to put God’s

kingdom above and before anything else?

Today Jesus is asking us the same question today. The same

question and the same call— are we ready as Christians to follow

Jesus truly wherever He goes? To follow Him without knowing

where this will take us is a mistake. We should know that our

being faithful to Him may sometimes ask us not to follow our

relatives or friends where they would want us to be. It is not easy

for a Christian to be honest and just in all his dealings with

people. It is not easy to speak the truth, and only the truth, in all

situations. It is not easy to be faithful to my wife/husband, and not

even to think of taking a second wife, or to go away with another

man. It is not easy not to give bribes, or to refuse a bribe when it is

offered. It is not easy to live in good understanding with my

neighbors, respecting them and helping them.

All these are part of being a follower of Jesus. If I want to be one,

I must know what he expects to be like Him. Someone who gives

all he/she has. We might not be able to give at once. But God is patient, he will wait until we are ready to give Him our ALL!

Religious Education Registration

For September 2019-2020

Our Lady of Good Counsel is new accepting registrations for the

2019/2020 program year beginning in September.

Registration forms can be picked up in the back of the church or

in the parish office. The complete registration form, a copy of the

Baptism certificate, a copy of the birth certificate along with the

registration fee are to be submitted at the time of registration.

Registrations are accepted during parish office hours. For more

information call the parish office at

718-447-1503.

Re-registration forms were sent home on 2/24/19.

First Day of Class is Sunday, September 15, 2019 for

Pre-K through the 6th grade. First Day of Class for RCIA Teens

and 7th Grade is Wednesday, September 18, 2019.

Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo está aceptando inscripciones

nuevos para el año del programa 2019/2020 que comienza en

Septiembre. Los formularios de inscripción se pueden recoger en la

parte posterior. De la iglesia o en la oficina parroquial. El formulario

de inscripción completo, una copia del certificado de bautismo, una

copia del certificado de nacimiento junto con la cuota de inscripción

deben presentarse en el momento de la inscripción. Se aceptan

inscripciones en horario de oficina parroquial. Para más información
