Victim Support Volunteers Needed forHatfield Heath

Have you ever thought that you would liketo do something for our Village but havebeen unsure quite what? Here is somethingthat might suit you well.

Might you be able to spare just four to sixhours a week on a flexible basis to suityou? Well, if you became a Victim SupportVolunteer you will receive full training andall your normal expenses will be paid.

You may have noticed Victim Supportposters throughout Hatfield Heath.YourParish Council want to encourage a 'localbranch' of this very useful service righthere. The role is to give confidential emotionalsupport and practical help to victims ofcrime - and other people affected. Whilstprimarily you would be serving HatfieldHeath, you would also serve the areaimmediately around us possibly as far asGreat Dunmow etc.

We need you - or someone you know - tocome forward and allow themselves to beconsidered for training. Spread over onlyfour convenient days, the training is bothfun and interactive with volunteers sayingthat they really enjoyed it.

Whilst there is a firm commitment for you tomake, most Volunteers really enjoy theirinvolvement for several years - and somestay for decades. You have to be at leasteighteen years old to be selected and thereis no upper age limit. Fully supported by alocal Manager you will also get plenty ofopportunities to meet with other volunteersin the Team at locally arranged Volunteermeetings, and also one to one supportmeetings, both designed to help build yourcounselling skills. Your already good ITskills will make the client reports you sendweekly a mere routine.

Brendan, proprietor of the ever popularHunters Meet ,has kindly agreed to providea discreet central venue for appointmentswith clients - which are always before 6.30p.m. on weekdays or at weekends.

If this sounds like you, or you would like to knowmore, or just have a chat about this excitingpossibility, then email Julie Binsted VictimServices Delivery Manager for an InformationPack.

Thank you.Cllr. Colin Skyrme HHPC [email protected]

Hannah and Michael Shine would like to thank all who supported their Open Garden onthe 28/29 May weekend in aid of Grove Cottage (MENCAP). Once again we opened onSaturday and Sunday by popular demand. We had fabulous weather throughout theweekend, which was an added bonus. We were entertained by Jessica Daugirda (18 yr oldprofessional singer from the West End stage), Epping Green Community Spirit Choir,SOSA Dance Fitness and line dancing, Adrienne & Malcolm (singers), Ukes of Hazard(Ukulele group) and Anwaar Belly Dance. On Sunday, we were entertained by theBishops Stortford Ukulele Society and Izzy & Pete (singers). The belly dancers were soexotic with stunning costumes and the ukulele groups on both days engaged the crowdwith nostalgic songs. The gardens looked beautiful and the entertainment was superb.Loads of plants were sold, and coffee and cakes were a great hit. The book stall andraffle stall were busy too. We are most grateful to all our entertainers for giving us such afantastic performance for the charity.

We would like to thank all our friends and volunteers, and also those from Grove Cottagewho made delicious cakes and scones, all those who helped on the day, and all those whomade generous donations and gave raffle prizes. We would also like to thank the Co-opfor kindly supplying us with carrier bags for the book stall!

Grove Cottage will benefit from this event by just over £4,250 – a very rewarding sum.We are most grateful and appreciative of all your support which made this possible.

Grove Cottage is affiliated to Mencap and is maintained by local donations only. Itprovides activities for children and adults with learning disabilities and respite care forparents/carers. This provides a much needed break for the families of these children andadults.

Many thanks again. We hope to do it again next year – the last May Bank Holidayweekend!! Once again, many thanks for your support.

Hannah & Michael Shine

“No Objections?!”A neighbour recently submitted a building application to Uttlesford District Council's Planning Department - 60%of those eligible to comment did so, all objecting. Fortunately the application was refused. It was rejectedfor a number of reasons: Scale, location and design, poor amenity for neighbouring property and poor visualamenity for the street - All legitimate and valid grounds for refusal.

It was then very disappointing to read in May's edition of the Village Magazine that Hatfield Heath Parish Councilhad no objections to this development. I had assumed HHPC worked along the same guidelines and implementedthe same code of practice as UDC , so I'm perplexed as to how they've come to a different conclusion. On theUDC's website 11 neighbour's objections and comments were accessible to view, the last of which was dated 12thApril 2016. HHPC's minutes were dated 13th April 2016, were these neighbours objections not considered, Iwould have hoped that HHPC had looked at what the immediate people's comments were beforemaking their decision..... Also if UDC's decision was at a point where it could have gone either way, HHPC'scomments may have helped to sway in favour of the applicant.

Isn't the role of the Parish Council to represent it's local village community??I have emailed the parish clerk and Cllr Lemon twice asking for their comments - as yet I have received no reply.

“Culinary uses of herbs”

For the May talk we were fortunate to haveSerer Zsuzsa stand in as our speaker on thesubject of herbs in cookery. She is a qualified horticulturist with a wealth ofexperience on growing and using herbs. She

learnt many of her skills from“Herbal Heaven,” and then setup her own business,“Spicesotic plants.”

Serer gave us a lively practicaldemonstration in using herbs as

part of starters, main courses desserts and evenin drinks. She was very keen for us to smelland taste the leaves and try to guess the nameof the plant.

We learnt some useful facts which I share withyou here!. some herbs can be cut in a clump like a badhaircut and will grow back in about a weekwhile others need to be gently pulled but notcut.. supermarket herbs die off quickly becausethey have not been grown in a gentleenvironment. the more sunlight a herb receives whilegrowing, the more flavour it has but to havemaximum life grow in semi-shade. put dried herbs into cooking at the start andfresh herbs at the end. herbs such as rosemary & winter savoury areexcellent for putting in bottles of oil forflavoursome cooking and will keep for up to 1year. to dry herbs, hang them out of the sunlight butin a dry and airy position. herbs such as ginger mint, pineapple sage andlemon verbena can be added to recipes forcakes, ice creams, cordials and Pimms!

So even though you missed a verygood talk, you will hopefully havefound out here some things aboutherbs that you might not have known.

The Farms of Hurdle End - A talk by Liz Wright

The Farms of Hurdle End is the title of the talk givento an attentive audience at the May meeting ofHatfield Regis Local History Society, by a ladywhose interests in the history of our area goes backmany years. Former resident, Village Historian andone of the founders of the Society, Liz Wright wasalso Secretary and Joint Editor of “A History ofHatfield Heath” which was our Milleniumpublication in 2000. There were five farms in thearea then known as Hurdle End – now Ardley End.They were Gibsons, Friars, Parvilles, Pooles and themanor of Matching Barns which is now extinct.

GIBSONS is exceptional in that the farm was ownedfreehold by one family for at least 500 years. Inmedieval times the Dowsett family farmed there. In1589 the male line died out and the farm was inheritedby Margaret Dowsett, who married John Man[n].again in about 1800 the farm passed through adaughter [Mary Mann] who married RichardMatthews from Shrubbs farm. In 1889, following thedeath of Barnard Matthews his wife Susan sold thefarm to Down Hall which by this time owned landextending to Harlow and Sawbridgeworth.

Both GIBSONS and FRIARS can be traced backto medieval times. FRIARS was land willed to StBartholomew’s Hospital at the beginning of the 13th

century. The Dowsetts who owned Gibsons freeholdappear in manorial records as early as 1378 and therewas structural evidence from which earlier occupancycould be inferred. The manor of MATCHINGBARNS is mentioned in the Domesday bookbeing held by Godric while is mentioned inPARVILLES a document of 1233. POOLES and“HURDLE END Cottage” both were built in the mid16th century. These are both younger than Gibsons,Liz said.

MATCHING BARNS another timber framed housewas eventually merged with PARVILLES. Thehouse falling into disrepair and eventually vanishingcompletely. Similarly at PARVILLES, there is nowno sign of the original building.

HURDLE END COTTAGE was, for two centuries inthe hands of various members of the Mann family.

Eventually it was sold in 1834 when Israel Mann diedinsolvent.Very little is known about the history of POOLES.At the end of the 15th century it was being farmed bya member of the Dowsett family. It was part of theHatfield manor and the tenancy passed through varioushand before it was sold to Bart’s Hospital.

One interesting point which appears in the wills andother documents is the field names. Many of these arestill identifiable today, said Liz. She was thanked byChairman David Parish.

We aim to raise the level of knowledge about ourwonderful area. Our websitewww.hundredparishes.org.uk is a mine ofinformation, with links to more detailed resourcesand suggestions for walks, as well as advancenotice of events related to local heritage, conservation or culture.

Recently, members were treated to a fascinatingtalk by geologist Gerald Lucy. His presentation onthe last hundred million years put into perspectivethe miniscule period of man’s existence, around250,000 years, and the even smaller time span forwhich there is recorded history.

Today’s coastal erosion is part of a continuingprocess that has seen gradual but dramaticrealignments of the Earth’s surface over the last 4billion years. The changes over such a long periodof time are difficult to comprehend. The continentsas we know them were once one big land mass.Fossils in the Himalayas date from when that areawas beneath the sea. British coal was formed longago when the UK was somewhere near theEquator.

Nearer home, and much more recently, the RiverThames once flowed through Harlow andChelmsford before joining the Rhine (there was noNorth Sea then). Our local flintstones were createdin a thin layer of chalk by chemical reaction; andour so-called Hertfordshire puddingstones weredumped by a retreating glacier. Gerald gave usmuch to think about.

Our next talk will be in Stansted Mountfitchet atCrafton Green Community Centre on the eveningof July 11, starting at 7:30pm and open tomembers and non-members. Our speaker, TonyMorton of Essex Wildlife Trust, will addressanother aspect of our heritage with a talkabout woodland in and around the HundredParishes.

Please come along – the £5 entry fee for non-members includes tea and biscuits.

Cox Ley Street Party

To celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday and fifty yearsof Cox Ley being built and the houses occupied it wasdecided to hold a street party. Incidentally there are sixhouses still occupied by the original inhabitants. Theweather forecast was mixed, would it rain or wouldthe sun shine? The party was scheduled to start at 1p.m., at 1 p.m. it was showery - head for the villagehall, but no, the weather improved and tables were setup in the street and food and drink appeared fromevery direction, though a few sun shades were put up,to keep off the sun or the rain?

Old, new occupants of Cox Ley, children who hadmoved away all gathered together to create awonderful occasion, it was a grand mix. The weatherstayed fine until about 6 p.m. by which time the partywas breaking up, shortly afterwards the heavensopened and it poured with rain, we were lucky.

Thanks to everyone who made it a grand party
