Technology and MeTechnology and Me
A personal timeline of educational technology
OverviewOverviewMy name is Juli Umetsu
I started school in the 1960’s in Michigan
I graduated from high school in 1976 in Naperville, IL
I first went to college at the University of Iowa in 1976 and received my degree Bachelors degree in Business Administration
I followed this with a post-bacc degree in Secondary Education from the University of Phoenix
When I finish my current studies and earn my MEd degree in educational technology, I hope to become a better college instructor, utilizing current technology in my curriculum.
My definition My definition of educational of educational

I attended three different high schools in two different countries. Very different schools…very different cultures. However, one thing was constant. My classroom in the 1970’s came with the same standard equipment: slide projector, screen, and overhead.

Basic Computer Language & DOS Computers too expensive for the average student (BUT
every student had an electric typewriter!)

I love Open Table! This is an innovative restaurant reservation system that allows the user (diner) to make a confirmed reservation at thousands of restaurants around the world. Reservations at of a few of my favorite restaurants, shown below, were made using www.opentable.com
Calle Ocho in New York, NY
French Laundry in Napa, CA
Eleven Madison in New York, NY
A technology I want to use in my A technology I want to use in my classroomclassroom In the culinary field, it would be great to
incorporate the use of computer technology to order directly from the farmers – ordering and receiving only the freshest produce, harvested that day!
My vision of the classroom My vision of the classroom of the future…of the future…
A student centered learning environment that is technology enhanced with lessons that are always meaningful to the students. Although this should be standard in all classrooms today, I feel that until all administrators and educators “buy-in” it will still be a vision for the future.
A challenge for teachingA challenge for teaching I would challenge the
Maui Culinary Academy to use Web 2.0 tools such as ifoods.tv not just as a teaching platform, but as an opportunity for our students to creatively post recipes and interact with Chefs around in the global community.

Words of wisdomWords of wisdom “The illiterate of the
21st century will not be those who cannot read or write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”
